On January 12th, 1983, the police department in Brattleboro, Vermont, got a strange call from some colleagues at a local company about a case of what they thought to be false identity. The woman in question worked as a secretary at the company and called herself Teri Martin. Martin claimed to be the twin sister of a woman named Robbie Hannon, who had recently died and who had been married to her brother-in-law, John Greenleaf Hannon III. Except there was no Teri Martin. And there was no Robbie Hannon. There was only Marie Hilley.Audrey Marie Hilley, who preferred to go by Marie, was born and raised in Anniston, Alabama. That is where she grew up, got married the first time and raised her two children. She also had multiple affairs with her bosses, tried to poison both of her children with arsenic, and succeeded in doing so with her first husband. Marie Hilley would go on to wreak havoc all over the South and the NorthEast, leaving a trail of false identities and dead bodies in her wake. We've covered our share of scary ladies on this show. In fact, bad bitches are one of our special interests. There was Tracey Richter, who murdered an innocent neighbor to frame him for a crime he didn't commit. Marie Hilley, the serial poisoner who eluded police for years and once passed herself off as her own (fictional) twin sister. Marjorie Orbin, the Vegas showgirl who murdered her husband for his life insurance and left his dismembered body in the desert. I could keep going—there are a lot of ‘em. But this week, I think we may have found the scariest one yet. You can tell us if you think I'm wrong, but I think the woman we're about to tell you about may be the worst of all the women we've covered so far…a woman whose heart is a swirling black hole of need and darkness. Frank was moving up at the foundry where he worked, and Marie brought in extra income as an executive secretary. But, in the mid-seventies, trouble started finding the Hilley family. Unexplained illnesses, arson, nuisance calls, money problems, extortion, and more. Wife, Mother, Murderer (1991), starring Judith Light, is based on the very strange story of Marie Hilley. Hilley murdered her husband by poisoning him with arsenic. When she tries the same with her daughter and gets caught, she flees and assumes a new identity. After marrying her second husband under the assumed identity of Robbi Hannon, she fakes her own death and comes back, pretending to be Robbie's twin sister, Teri. Will there be justice? You can’t pick your family, but you CAN pick your poison. This week we bring you two cases of women who poisoned their family members. Nathalie starts off with a case from Jerrell’s hometown in Alabama. Audrey Marie Hilley was married with two children. She had a spending habit, a cheating habit, and, to make matters more interesting, a poison-your-family-members-and-escape-from-jail habit. Next, Rachel takes us back to the 1600s with the case of Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray. Marie came from a high status family and found herself in trouble when her father disapproved of her affair. Marie’s lover really liked to gamble and she soon found herself broke. Marie decided she would kill two birds with one stone. Literally. Marie would murder her father with poison and inherit his wealth to fund her lover’s gambling habit. The money didn’t last long and Marie would have to look for her next victim. Andrew and Mark look to the headlines as they round out their 30-year look back at 1991. This week, it's "Wife, Mother, Murderer" with Who's the Boss' Judith Light, playing criminal Marie Hilley. Follow the fellas as they look at the winding wild world of Marie Hilley, as Light plays her own fake identical twin, gaslights her daughter and bamboozles Major Winchester from MASH, all within a tidy 90 minutes. All that and more, so tune in, how about?
Audrey Marie Hilley lived for the finer things in life. She always dressed well and wanted to be seen and known for having expensive things and a lavish lifestyle. Despite what she wanted, Marie knew she needed more money than what she and her husband Frank were bringing in so she came up with a plan. She took out life insurance policies on her husband, her daughter, and her son at different points throughout her life and also began poisoning them with arsenic. She would end up being charged and convicted of the poisoning murder of Frank Hilley and attempted murder of her daughter Carol. In February 1987, Marie was granted a three-day furlough and disappeared. She was found on February 26th and went into cardiac arrest en route to the hospital, dying from hypothermia and extreme exposure to the elements.Join me on social media by following Mask of Sanity on Instagram (@maskofsanitythepodcast) and Twitter (@masksanitypod) for more updates on upcoming episodes! Family. Whether it's the family you choose for yourself or the one you're born into, family is vital. When we're with our families, we're supposed to feel safe, loved, supported. A family should be a soft place to fall, for everybody in it. A shelter from the storm. But when the nucleus of the family is a parent like the one in this week's story, home becomes a cesspit of paranoia and fear. Your protector is revealed to be a predator instead—and you soon come to realize that any storm that might be raging outside can't be half as bad as the one you're already in. In 1983, a woman was found on a back porch in the freezing cold in Anniston, Alabama. She didn’t look like Audrey Marie Hilley—the vibrant mother of two who’d once been an icon of the small town. She looked like an old, wet and dazed woman left for dead. In reality, she wasn’t the mother of two, exceptional co-worker and husband to Frank and later John. She was in fact, an escaped murderer. The 17-year old had left home in Concard California 2 days prior and was heaed to San Fransosco. He was planning to stay overnight and then drive back the following day but he never made it back home. Instead, his body was found bruised and battered, on a desolate beach in the San Francisco Bay. When they found hi, the lifeguard described the body as being in realtivley good condition. There were minor cuts and bruises on his back but no evident trauma and they also noted that he looked “very clean.” A day after he went missing, Kurt’s father, Tom, received an unusual phone call from Kurt’s friend who told him that his son had attempted to leave a cult and because of that was in fear for his life. Tom checked Kurt’s room after and found suspicious items including a knife crafted from a deer hoof, drawings depicting witchcraft, violent fantasies as well as a necklace made with feathers and stones. #2 Audrie Marie Hilley On the outside, the Hilley’s looked like a picture perfect family, but they were the furthest from that anyone could be. Frank and Audrie Hilley had been married since 1950 and had two children, Mike and Carol. During his late teens, Mike began to fall ill, suffering from stomach problems that were written off as nothing but a persistent stomach flu. Once he moved out of the house for college, the stomach problems mysteriously vanished. While visiting his son at college one day, Frank mentioned he was contemplating divorcing his mother after catching her in bed with another man. Shortly after that Frank himslef started suffering from stomach problems and in May of 1975, he went to the hospital complaining of nausea and tenderness near the stomach. He was admitted, and while his symptoms worsened, Audrie continued to be by his side and stayed by his side until he eventually passed away. After conducting an autopsy, it was concluded that he had died from a hepatitis infection.

The story of Marie Hilley's life is one of the most strange and bizarre true crime cases I've encountered. There are so many twists and turns in this case that I've split it into two parts. Frank and Marie Hilley early in their marriage. Once Upon a Crime Podcast Fan Page on Facebook
