The extraordinary story of American special operator and trailblazer Shannon Kent, who hunted high value targets on classified missions in the most dangerous locales on earth while trying to balance her life as a wife and mother. Of the 1.3 million active-duty service members in the US military, only a tiny fraction are selected as "operators." Shannon Kent was one of the first women to serve at this level and was widely recognized as one of the best. Shannon served as a Navy cryptologic technician, responsible for signals intelligence and electronic warfare, but her proficiency with language set her apart. She was assigned to a unit so secretive that its name can't even be printed here, where she worked clandestinely to hunt the most wanted terrorists in the world. Send Me is Shannon's heroic life story, revealing the truth of both her work and the challenges she faced while trying to raise a family with her husband Joe, himself a Special Forces soldier. He and Shannon met in a war zone, their love forged during a special operations training course, their dedication spanning multiple combat deployments and the birth of their two boys. It is the legacy of an extraordinary woman who rose to the apex of the military, working with the most elite forces in the world, lifting the veil from the life of a Special Forces family to share their duty, sacrifice, and humanity. Drawing on their own extensive experience in special operations, Joe Kent and Marty Skovlund Jr. bring Shannon's heroic story to life, while providing a rare peek into the secretive world of special ops intelligence and a glimpse into the complexities of domestic life for a Special Forces family.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Coffee or Die Executive Editor Marty Skovlund, Jr. had two aspirations in High School; play for the NBA and become an Army Ranger. The Los Angeles Lakers never called but he did earn a Ranger tab. The idea that someday he would be doing “classic Ernie Pyle” journalism never crossed his mind. Marty founded The Havok Journal to give a voice to the Veteran community.  Later, he approached Evan Hafer (a fellow soldier and Founder/CEO of Black Rifle Coffee Company) about starting a media arm of Black Rifle. Coffee of Die launched in June of 2018. Their website receives 2 million visits per month and their YouTube channel has generated 13 million views so far this year. Marty says he left Afghanistan with a rifle and returned with a camera. His reporting for Coffee or Die has also taken him to Iraq and he recently returned from Ukraine. He shares what he witnessed in that conflict. “In Ukraine they are fighting for their very existence. Even common citizens have taken up arms.” One of his most compelling series actually was domestic coverage – the Standing Rock protest in North Dakota. Marty's current project is a book about special forces legend Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, a woman operating “outside the wire” with Special Operations at a time when it was almost unheard of.  She was killed by an ISIS suicide bomber in 2019. I strongly encourage listeners to read his first book: “Violence of Action; The Untold Stories of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the War on Terror.”  Also, look into The Darby Project. We also discuss Marty's evolution into being a “real journalist”, an issue he struggled with for a long time.  He drew from his experience as the “new guy” in Ranger training. “You can't expect others to take you seriously if you won't take yourself seriously.” TAKEAWAY: They idea that long form journalism has died is not accurate. People just have more competition for their time and if the product is compelling they WILL read it.

Do vets matter to the media and does the media matter to vets? The answer is of course, yes. But in what ways do vets matter to the media? As props? As confirmation of prior biases? And how do vets engage with the media? Does it give a voice to the voiceless? Does the media generate more heat than light in the veteran community? I discuss all this and more with American Warrior Radio's Ben Beuhler-Garcia, author, columnist, music video director and Warfighter Rights leader Boone Cutler, and Havok Journal owner Charlie Faint.   Show Alibis I think it's safe to say, this was the first episode I didn't feel needed. Ben is a very experienced host and Boone is a prolific talker. It's a good thing too. Charlie and I had just recorded the pilot episode of the Savage Wonder podcast (links coming soon!) and my synapses were, frankly, a little fried by the time I hit record on this one. But with pros like Ben and Boone on, it was easy to find grist for the mill and put together a decent episode.   Yeah, this episode was about the media. But it's funny – and I blame the news coming out of Afghanistan for this – we ended up veering into veteran health and wellbeing for a second week in a row. It's more of a natural transition than you think – if the media can cause a lot of heartburn and imbalance, it's good for vets to have a way to detox. If you don't know about Boone's Spartan Pledge initiative – check it out in the Show Notes below. Is the US Losing Faith in the Military? That was supposed to be the subject this week – and after about 30 minutes, it was. My guests were Coffee or Die Executive Editor Havok Journal founder Marty Skovlund Jr. and Havok Journal owner Charlie Faint. We had a lot of ground to cover with Marty - from the founding of Havok Journal to the latest on his new book - which explains why we took the scenic route to get on topic. But when we got there, we dove in headfirst: why are most parents patriotic up until their kid is about to enlist? Should vets look down on those who never served? How many of the Army's image issues would be eliminated if we just closed Fort Hood? What is the single best tool to eliminate toxic leadership? Marty and Charlie are at the top of their game and have answers to these and so many more questions. Have a listen here.   Show Alibis So I asked Marty about Charlie's acronym-ization of the “Havok” in Havok Journal. He answered. And then we moved on without me explaining what acronym Charlie came up with. We had talked about it on the first episode, so this should really be on you for not going back and listening to all of our old episodes first. (Please don't. Seriously, we're so much better than we were two months ago). So, on the off-chance you haven't heard the first episode yet, it stands for “Have A Voice Outside of Killing (HAVOK).” Marty says he leaned into leaving the military for a writing career like Leroy Jenkins. I didn't have enough time to mention that Leroy Jenkins was a fraud. But you should know that by now. It takes me just under a decade to get to Charlie in this week's episode. How he hung on that long, I don't know. Maybe he was delirious from holding his middle finger into the camera for a prolonged period of time. Wayne Knight once said that playing Newman on Seinfeld was challenging because he would only have a few lines an episode, yet he had to make a huge impact every time out. Charlie was our Wayne Knight this episode. Hopefully, he won't ever have to be again. And I won't do anything corny like say, “Hello, Charlie.” But seriously, he was on point. So, while listening to a rough draft of the show, I winced, noticing that I laughed when Marty says that Vanessa Guillen wasn't even the only soldier murdered at Fort Hood that month. Trust me, I don't find anything that happened to her funny. But Marty had a great delivery, and, as I explained on the show, I was thinking of the tepid parents who don't want their kids to enlist hearing this and rolling their eyes in “I told you so's”. What happened to Vanessa Guillen was horrific and so crazily over the top, it's hard to quickly summon appropriate human emotions when her case is thrown into a conversation. We rag a lot on Fort Hood in this episode, but, all joking aside, there is something rotten in the culture there that needs to be addressed, like, yesterday.   Show Notes Marty Skovlund Jr. The Ranger by Marty Skovlund Jr. The True Story of How Standing Rock Fell by Marty Skovlund Jr. The Longest War by Marty Skovlund Jr. Violence of Action by Marty Skovlund Jr. Nomadic Veterans 35P/SOT-A job description Reagan Foundation poll 2020 Gallup Poll on US trust in the military Vanessa Guillen murder at Fort Hood Coffee or Die Shannon Kent Second Mission Foundation FAIR Bari Weiss Ayaan Hirsi Ali Havok Journal Savage Wonder

The Military needs gamers. Over the past few months, the U.S. Army and Navy have spent a considerable amount of time playing video games. The Pentagon is streaming on Twitch, showing up at video game tournaments, and sponsoring esports events. And it’s all in a bid to reach a younger crowd and fill out the ranks. The military is trying to meet young people where they live and, increasingly, they live online playing video games. Is the military’s use of video games as a recruitment tool crossing the line or business as usual? To help us figure that out, we’ve got two guests today. Both returning champions. Here to help us untangle this mess is Pauline Kaurin. Kaurin is the Stockdale Chair in Professional Military Ethics at the US Naval War College and the author of the new book On Obedience: Contrasting Philosophies for the Military Citizenry and Community. We’ve also got Marty Skovlund Jr. Skovlund is a veteran of 1st Ranger Battalion and the Executive Editor of Coffee or Die Magazine.Recorded 8/28/20The long weird story of the Military going onlineActivists, trolls, and AOCWhy the military is allowed to recruit at high schoolsThe wild questions you get working as a recruiterScumbag recruitersMilitary service as a path to a middle class life and educationAngry Planet has a substack!
