Useful for plans and lessons, local educators say When Ryan McConville wanted a fun project for his ninth grade Global History class at Haldane High School, he turned to Gemini, Google's artificial intelligence tool. "I used it as a thought partner," said McConville, a 2003 Haldane graduate who has taught in the district since 2012. "I needed some fresh ideas." He said he asked Gemini for five ideas for how his students could explore Diocletian's decision in 286 C.E. to divide the Roman Empire. One idea was to have students write a newspaper-style investigation of the emperor. "I had them pretend to expose the crisis of the third century and choose whether Diocletian was a hero or a traitor for splitting up ancient Rome," he said. McConville is one of many teachers in the Highlands using artificial intelligence, or AI, for a wide range of tasks, including generating lesson ideas, reducing busywork, creating student worksheets and customizing teaching materials. That reflects a national trend: Last year, 60 percent of 2,232 public school teachers surveyed for a Gallup Poll reported using AI, with a third using it at least once a week. The most frequent AI users estimated that the technology saved them nearly six hours a week. At the Garrison School, math teacher Michael Roman uses the tools in an online service called Goblins, which markets itself as a "math teacher cloning device." His middle school students log into the software on their school-issued Chromebooks, and a virtual teacher provides problems like: "Zoe ran 28 miles this week. Next week, she plans to run 15 percent more miles. If she does, how many miles will she run in total over the two weeks?" When a reporter tried to answer, the virtual teacher said, "I see a 5 on the board. Where did that come from?" The virtual teacher then taught a brief lesson on percentages. Roman, whose said his class sizes range from nine to 17 students, said he likes Goblins because it provides "real-time adaptive feedback" to each student. He reserves the tool for the end of class, after he's explained the lesson, demonstrated practice problems and done small-group work. "It's like an exit ticket: They open up their laptops and try a few problems before they go," said Roman, who has been using the program for two years and will often use it to assign extra study. He said the students like the AI teacher that speaks in Gen Z lingo. "They either think it's fun or cringy," he said. "Either way, they're engaged." At Haldane, Ashley Linda uses AI with students who want additional academic support. She said that she can feed a reading assignment into an AI assistant such as Brisk, a tool designed for teachers, and ask it to modify the text to match a student's reading level. She said that when she is helping a student with a subject outside her expertise, she sometimes relies on AI to get up to speed. But Linda is wary about using AI for her 10th- and 12th-grade English students. "I'm not going to use it to generate a lesson plan or to grade student work," she said. "I don't think AI can make a better lesson than I can." She said she is also wary of relying on a tool she wants her students to avoid. "If I want my students to answer questions, think critically and learn how to write an essay without using AI, I'm also not going to use it," said Linda, who worries about allowing young people to become even more hooked on technology. "A generation of young people has been negatively impacted by screens," she said. Those concerns prompted at least one state lawmaker to propose regulations. Assembly Member Robert Carroll, a Democrat from Brooklyn who chairs the Committee on Libraries and Education Technology, introduced legislation in November to ban the use of AI in elementary and middle schools except for diagnostic purposes, instructional interventions for students with disabilities and administrative and planning purposes. In Rockland County, the Suffern school district requires teachers ...

But I have not. Honestly, I may have avoided the subject. But, I can't end this 10 year run without discussing it. At least I don't think I should, although it does not necessarily directly correlate with childlessness…although it could.   So here goes. Abortion:     Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus.[nb 1][2] The unmodified word abortion generally refers to induced abortion,[3][4] or deliberate actions to end a pregnancy.[nb 2] Abortion occurring without intervention is known as spontaneous abortion or "miscarriage", and occurs in roughly 30–40% of all pregnancies.[5][6] Common reasons for inducing an abortion are birth-timing and limiting family size.[7][8][9] Other reasons include maternal health, an inability to afford a child, domestic violence, lack of support, feelings of being too young, wishing to complete an education or advance a career, and not being able, or willing, to raise a child conceived as a result of rape or incest.[7][9][10]  As you can see here, there are several types of abortion and several reasons for abortion. The issues around abortion, as we well know, include such questions as: is abortion wrong or is it right in certain cases? Christians may ask 'will a woman go to hell if she has an abortion?' Is it right or wrong based on the reason? OK, that's the question on an abortion a woman chooses to have.   Now I am not going to insult your intelligence, especially if you are 100% against abortion no matter the reason it may be needed or happens, but here goes: I often wonder if those who are against abortions no matter what, realize a miscarriage is a type of abortion? And I often wonder this because of the conversations I hear in real life and in the political arena. The conversations where people simply say they are absolutely against abortion and I wonder if they did any research on abortion, the different types, or reasons. The fact that in some cases the woman has no choice because her body is controlling the outcome.      When most people think of abortion, without doing any additional research on the issue, basing their beliefs on just what they have heard, they see it only as the act of terminating a pregnancy. Many people tend to see the termination as selfish, as murder.   In a 2025 Gallup Poll, 40% say abortion is morally wrong, while 49% say it is morally acceptable.  Overall U.S. opinion on abortion morality In the 2025 Gallup poll: 40% said abortion is morally wrong. 49% said abortion is morally acceptable.   That was a little surprising to me as I thought the numbers would be neck and neck, but be that as it may, there is still a good percentage of the public who believe abortion is morally wrong. But I ask, what type of abortion are they referring to? Have they thought critically about the type of abortion they consider when making an answer?  Those who believe it is morally wrong, what about miscarriage? What about ectopic pregnancy? What about dare i say, gray areas? Gray areas such as abortion bans delaying care, causing great danger, even death, to the mother? What about cases like the one involving Amber Thurmon? Link to the story in the show notes.  Do you think I am making excuses for abortion? For having an abortion? I created this episode to have us think about why abortion, as well as why not abortion. In fact, I wanted to talk about abortion, not to tell you how I feel about it, about my opinion, but to ask for critical thinking. I honestly believe critical thinking is lacking in many subjects, not just abortion.   And I know some of you may say wrong is wrong and right is right. Please do not try to force abortion on me. Please do not try to get me to agree that abortion is right. Well, that is not what I am doing. Actually, what I am doing is asking for two things: Research the reasons why abortions happen or are chosen.  Think about what if it were you or a loved one who had a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy or decided on an abortion due to being attacked, whether as an adult or as a child. How would you deal with it? How would you interact with the person? I think my biggest issue with subjects like this is the way Christians treat people who have or are about to make certain decisions, like having an abortion. How do we talk to, judge, interact with people who made the decision to have an abortion? Outside of the fact that if your body aborts or wants to abort, it is out of a woman's control. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure if those who haven't done the research fully understand that.         Research links: https://www.propublica.org/article/georgia-abortion-ban-amber-thurman-death   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion My contact information: Website: www.childlessnotbychoice.net and www.civillamorgan.com Facebook: booksbycivillamorgan Instagram: @joyandrelevance Pinterest: Civilla M. James and Nate unpack a recent Gallup poll on Americans’ views of capitalism—down from 60% (2021) to 54% (2025)favorable—and why that headline can mislead. Beneath it: strong support for free enterprise and small business, persistent dislike of big business, and sharp differences across age, gender, and party. Rather than picking teams (“capitalism vs. socialism”), they ask the more Christian question: where are we placing our hope? Drawing on 1 Samuel, the exile, and Daniel, they argue systems are provisional, reform is often wise, but obedience to Christ is the constant—“fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The church’s political and economic posture should flow downstream from discipleship, not the other way around. In this eye-opening episode, we dive into stunning new data from Gallup and the U.S. General Social Survey that reveals a surprising truth about America's birth rate crisis. Contrary to popular belief, it's not conservatives who are having fewer children—they are maintaining above-replacement fertility rates. The decline in births is almost entirely driven by liberal men and women having fewer or no kids. We break down what the polls say about happiness, priorities, and life satisfaction: Married women with children report being 2.5 times happier than women who aren't married or childless. Conservative men (particularly Trump voters) rank having children as their #1 priority and marriage as #4, while liberal men and women rank them far lower. Liberal women often prioritize career and financial independence over family, which aligns with the falling birth rate among left-leaning households. The episode also explores the cultural and psychological divide between conservatives and liberals when it comes to family creation, relationships, and personal fulfillment. We discuss why the data suggests that America's future demographic landscape could be shaped by these stark differences in values and priorities. Listeners will learn: How political affiliation correlates with family planning and happiness. Why conservative households continue to thrive in family creation. The surprising links between mental health, political ideology, and life satisfaction. Insights on how cultural messages about career and timing can impact long-term happiness. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in family trends, cultural shifts, and what really drives happiness in America.

A new Gallup Poll on this Independence Day holiday reveals that American Pride is at an all-time low. That's not surprising with everything that's happened in the first half of this year, and with the passage of the MAGA Murder Budget which steals from the working class safety net and further enriches Old Money. Yet, despite feeling dispirited, millions of Americans oppose this fascist takeover, and are demanding for real, economically progressive change. And a majority of Americans refuse to give-up, and to allow MAGA Republicans to own the American flag and define what real patriotism is.  Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com Left of Lansing is now on YouTube as well! leftoflansing.com NOTES: "National pride is declining in America. A recent Gallup Poll showed that 1 in 5 American adults reports feeling lonely every single day. It's something that U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has called a "national epidemic of loneliness and isolation." We hear from Murthy about the broader impact of loneliness. Then, experts say that loneliness and social isolation carry the same health risks as smoking. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychology and neuroscience professor, joins us to discuss how to break the cycle of loneliness and build more social connections in our lives. And, the longest scientific study of happiness has found that strong relationships stand out as the key. Dr. Robert Waldinger talks about what the study shows about the importance of relationships, how they benefit overall health, and how we can improve our own personal connections at any stage of life.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
