Niveda Rao graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Pre-Health Professions from CSUF in May 2020. She was an eight-time Dean's Scholar in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and completed the University Honors Program. While at CSUF, she had the privilege of being a President's Scholar, Supplemental Instruction Leader, and member of multiple on-campus clubs. In addition to her on-campus involvements, she was a part of the COPE Health Scholars program for four years, where she interned and served on the leadership team at St. Mary Medical Center, in Long Beach. Niveda conducted medicinal biochemistry research in the Billingsley Lab Group for three years. In April 2019, her research on the synthesis of the PKC modulator (−)-Indolactam I was published in Tetrahedron journal. After graduating from CSUF, she continued to work as an Emergency Room Patient Care Technician at St. Jude Medical Center while applying to medical school. After a 30-year career as an interior designer, Joan Portman founded the Healing Environments program in 2008 at St. Mary Medical Center in Pennsylvania. This program enlisted the skills of over 350 off-site volunteers who created afghans, shawls and many other comfort items offered as gifts while visiting with patients. The 38-year old intensive care nurse in Torrance, California says she's used to working long, hectic shifts in the ICU at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center. But seeing her patients die alone due to COVID-19, with no family around, has taken a mental toll on nurse Lindsey Burrell. That's when the mother of two decided to reach out to a psychiatrist for help. It's also taken a physical toll. Generally heathy and active, Burrell says in the past 30 days she's been sick more than she's been well, getting to a point where she was tested twice for COVID-19. Through audio journals provided to ABC News, Burrell gives a candid glimpse of her life juggling a loving family with whom she can sometimes have no physical contact and her job trying to save lives, at times both heartbreaking and inspiring.
