The widow of the late Eswatini human rights and pro-democracy activist Thulani Maseko says she has found courage knowing that though her husband was assassinated, what he fought for lives on. Maseko, the chair of the Muti-stakeholders Forum, was killed in early 2023. This month US Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave Thulani's widow Tanele the Secretary's Human Rights Defenders Award. She tells VOA's James Butty the award is bittersweet.

A spokesperson for the Eswatini Multi-Stakeholders Forum says the Eswatini government is harassing Tanele Maseko, the widow of slain human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko. Maseko, chair of the Multi-Stakeholders Forum, was killed in his home in January last year. The government has denied harassing her. Multi-stakeholders spokesperson Suvumelwano (See-Voo-Meh-Loo-Wah-Noh) Nyembe, tells VOA's James Butty, there is no justification for the police to ask Mrs. Maseko for her phone just because she has demanded progress in the investigation into her husband's assassination.

Eswatini government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo, tells VOA's James Buttty, he only told the widow to prove her allegations that the government was responsible for the death of her husband.

This is a tributary episode on the world-renowned activist and human rights attorney, Thulani R Maseko (TR) from Swaziland, who was allegedly slain by King Mswati III's regime (Swaziland). For this homage, my guest is Velaphi Mamba a long-time friend and comrade of TR. Velaphi Mamba is a vibrant activist and treasurer general of the People's United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), and recent master's degree graduate from Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. Velaphi and I talk about: *Historiography and ethnology of the Maseko clan and their major contributions to Swaziland's polity. *The Swazi state's stratagem of complete decimation of other clans' chiefs, and kingdoms - an erasure of the history of the clans causing a loss of self-determination and independence. *TR's litany of human rights cases and his contribution to the jurisprudence in Swaziland and his service to humanity internationally. On January 21, 2023, human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko was murdered in Swaziland. He was a remarkable advocate for rights and democracy, a commitment that brought him into direct confrontation with his country's absolute ruler, King Mswati III over decades. His family, friends and fellow citizens are grief-stricken and the international human rights and justice community is outraged. Maseko had been due to spend a week with a group of human rights activists and leaders in our Symposium on Strength and Solidarity for Human Rights. We met to celebrate his work and decided to share this audio recording of the event. This episode of the BizNews Power Hour features an in-depth interview with ANC insider turned outsider Themba Maseko, one of the key whistleblowers at the Zondo Commission. Maseko was frozen out because he refused to agree to President Zuma's directive to turn over government's R600m advertising spend to the Guptas. His struggles continue, with Maseko needing to use his firearm to drive off two intruders over the weekend. Also in this episode, Tongaat whistleblower David Woollam shares what went down at the company's EGM today after which shareholders who have already lost 95% of their investment will be required to pony up six times their current stake or be further diluted.
When former GCIS chief executive Themba Maseko, as the holder of the purse strings of government's significant advertising budget, refused to bow to the demands of the Gupta brothers, he was tossed into the political wilderness. Former President Zuma had Maseko fired after his refusal to abide by his instruction to assist the Guptas access R600m in ad spend. Maseko is the only ANC member to ever provide the party with an affidavit detailing the Gupta's attempts to capture the state's entire advertising budget for its new media venture, The New Age newspaper.

I sat down with former Bain partner Athol Williams to talk about his excellent and disturbing new book, Deep Collusion: Bain and the capture of South Africa. It is clear that Bain's South African leadership was dishonest before the Nugent Commission about its role in the hollowing out of South African Revenue Service. We explore in this podcast how Bain groomed the likes of Sipho Maseko (Telkom) and then Tom Moyane (Sars) , with direct access to former president Jacob Zuma, enabling it to access lucrative public sector work with no relevant public sector expertise. The detail is mind-blowing and compulsory to listen to.

Thulani Rudolf Maseko is my guest in this episode, and we discuss the intervention of the international community in Swaziland amidst the country's political unrest. He also gives a high-level constitutional opinion and on the democratization of the country. Thulani is an experienced human rights lawyer with a passion for the rule of law. He holds a Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa from the University of Pretoria, Centre for Human Rights. He holds a Hubert Humphrey Fellowship in Leadership from the American University Washington College of Law where he obtained a Master's Degree in International Legal Studies. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Swaziland. Thulani is a founder member of Lawyers for Human Rights (Swaziland) and has worked for the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) for several years as a consultant based in Swaziland. He has worked as an attorney in private practice for the last twenty-one years focusing mostly on human rights and constitutional litigation. In 2018, he was elected to be the Secretary of the Law Society of Swaziland for a period of two years. He has represented a number of the pro-democracy activists who constantly face prosecution and persecution by the State in the courts of Swaziland. He, himself, is a victim of abuse of power and authority, spent two years in prison before he was acquitted on appeal. On 18 March 2014, Thulani was jailed for contempt of court after criticizing Swaziland's judicial system. In August 2014, Maseko wrote to US President Barack Obama from prison, seeking his intervention ahead of the 2014 United States–Africa Leaders' Summit. Maseko was released from prison on 30 July 2015. He had been declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. Some highlights from our conversation: Whether trust should be placed on the international community to intervene and help Swaziland to democratize. Southern African Development Community's fact-finding mission in Swaziland. Swaziland political groups and civil society's submission to SADC Troika: The king and government must ensure that the process of dialogue includes all the players in Swaziland; a commitment to total unbanning of political parties; consideration for setting up an interim government; the process must give results to an adoption of a new democratic constitution; and the new constitution must ensure, going forward, the country is governed under a multiparty dispensation grounded on the rule of law. Historical background of the drafting process of the constitution and the intent of the drafters on the powers of the king. Everything that Swazi's do is informed by the wishes and whims of the monarch. The constitution was not intended to bind the king – a fundamental problem faced by all Swazis. For the people to merely elect their own prime minister without fundamentally changing the structure of the organs of the state would not give Swazi democracy. Human rights perspective on the king's speech, in particular: “Everything thing in Swaziland belongs to the king.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mpilo-nkambule/support

I did an in-depth interview with Themba Maseko, author of For My Country: Why I Blew The Whistle On Zuma And The Guptas, about his direct experiences as a top civil servant who was pressured (without success) by the Gupta family to help them steal from the state. The phenomenon of 'state capture' has become part of the South African lexicon, and represents not just grand theft of public monies but also, therefore, a direct and serious assault on the very foundations of South Africa's constitutional democracy. In this episode of In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser, the former government and Cabinet spokesperson shares breathtaking detail of how easy it was for a random family from India to come to South Africa and prey on its national resources, with the culpable assistance of corrupt people in both government and the private sector. This episode is of international interest because of its lessons about the importance of safeguarding public resources by protecting and strengthening accountability mechanisms, and establishin a culture OF accountability.

A bit of a change on the podcast today...bear with me as I will be back to the Peninsular War very soon... A recent petition was launched in the UK to attempt to upgrade the Military Medal of black South African soldier Job Maseko. What is his legacy in South Africa and is he still remembered in his hometown? I went to find out the answer to all of those questions. . . Beth also brings up a brain-twister: can you be home-home at the same time as being home, if the whole idea of going "home-home" means you’re NOT ACTUALLY THERE??? TechCentral — Telkom Group CEO Sipho Maseko joins TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod for a discussion on the telecommunications operator's new track-and-trace technology solution designed to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa. Telkom has developed the track-and-trace solution in partnership with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the CSIR to identify people who may have contracted Covid-19. The system collates multiple data sources such as GIS data to track an infected person’s exposure and who they may have unknowingly exposed to the virus to. This reduces the current reliance on the patient’s own recollections of who they may have exposed unknowingly and enables the CSIR to contact people who were in the same proximity as the patient. In certain communities, the department of health will be using trackers to trace primary contacts and ensure testing for secondary contacts. Telkom has partnered with Samsung to distribute 1 500 handsets to trackers across the country. The system will integrate the information collected by the trackers. In the podcast, Maseko discusses the privacy implications of the track-and-trace system and why he believes it is not only necessary to combat Covid-19 but also conforms with legislation governing people's privacy. He also talks about how the lockdown is affecting Telkom's day-to-day operations and the impact its hand on its restructuring and retrenchments programme.

eNCA Statement: eNCA has parted company with its Director of News Kanthan Pillay with immediate effect. This follows outrage and condemnation after a tweet he posted. The tweet does not represent the views of e-Media Investments and the channel. After intense overnight investigation and consultation, the channel decided it had no alternative but to end its relationship with him. Although he was acting in an individual capacity and his posting was unsolicited, he was nonetheless a senior member of staff and the channel believes there was no room for any other outcome and that damage control was imperative. Serious allegations have also been levelled at eNCA about Pillay's censorship of stories and his management style. The channel takes the allegations of censorship very seriously. To that end eNCA is co-operating fully with the SA National Editors Forum that has requested clarity. The channel will be appointing an external expert to investigate these claims. Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Maggs says: “All news organisations have one currency and that is credibility. It is clear this negative attention has adversely affected eNCA's reputation and credibility. However with the talented and dedicated staff we have, I believe the channel can recover. Right now our immediate priorities are to mend strained relationships and to rebuild credibility with its audience and other stakeholders as soon as possible.” We speak to eNCA's former Political Journalist Samkele Maseko on Update At Noon

He talks about the impact this could have on the group’s capital expenditure in order to sustain the robust performance into the future. He then turns to Telkom’s roaming and infrastructure sharing deal with Vodacom and the impact that it likely to have, with implementation of the roaming component expected to be concluded by the end of June. He talks about Telkom’s plans to monetise Gyro, its property management business, and reflects on the enormous job losses that have happened at Telkom and whether more cuts are in the offing.
