Persians. Romans. Chinese. Guptas. Abbasids. Mongols. British. The list of the world's largest empires is a list of different peoples of Eurasia. With the sole exception of ancient Egypt, the Eurasian landmass has been the breeding ground for the largest empire of each moment in history. Why has Eurasia been so prone to large empires? Similarly, why did so many technological breakthroughs — from writing to gunpowder — occur in Eurasia? And how did these broader patterns of Eurasian history enable the dark chapters of European colonialism? These questions constitute some of the “broadest patterns of history”, to quote Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel. Indeed, these are not only the broad contours of the last few millennia: searching for answers, we need to dig deep into the origins of agriculture and beyond. My guest today, Ideen Riahi, has been digging very deep indeed. Building on Diamond's original project, Riahi has traced the deepest roots behind Eurasia's outsized power in human history. And if he is correct, these roots extend to periods way before the dawn of agriculture. In this episode, we discuss topics such as: The “Why Eurasia?” questions: What does it mean? What answers do we have? And is this a meaningful question to start with? Environmental determinism vs environmental realism Did the activities of our Ice Age ancestors prepare Eurasian lands for farms, cows, and cavalries? Riahi's case against genetic explanations of Eurasian dominance and Europe's rise As always, we finish with my guest's reflections on humanity. President Cyril Ramaphosa does not even know where the Guptas are. That is the riposte from  Glynnis Breytenbach, the Democratic Alliance's Shadow Minister of Justice, to the National Prosecuting Authority (NP) calling in the help of the President to try and fast track the extradition from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of the Guptas. As for the few billion of State Capture loot recovered so far by the NPA, Breytenbach says “it's not even a drop in the ocean of the trillions and trillions and trillions of rands that we were robbed of - and that government officials and cabinet members assisted crooks to steal from us”.  She calls the close to 700 government officials thus far convicted of corruption “petty thieves” - and says “we need to see people at the top of the scale who stole at a breathtaking pace, held to account”. She also gives an update on the proposed establishment of DA-driven Anti Corruption Commission where prosecutors will have “no fear that their work will be undone by a bunch of politicians who don't like being held accountable”.

Non-profit Freedom Under Law (FUL) wants the Electoral Court to release the reasons for its decision to uphold former President Jacob Zuma's appeal again the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). On Tuesday, Zuma won his appeal in the Electoral Court against the IEC's decision to exclude him from being able to stand as an uMkhonto weSizwe Party parliamentary candidate ahead of the May 29 elections. The IEC argued against Zuma's eligibility to stand as a candidate owing to his 15-month prison sentence for being in contempt of court, in 2021. The Electoral Court issued the order without reasons, which FUL argues is critical for the credibility of the electoral process. "The need for an urgent decision on this matter is understandable, considering that elections are imminent. However, the reasons for the decision are of importance, both for the eligibility of the candidate in question, and as a general precedent. The rule of law requires that courts give fully motivated reasons for their decisions. FUL therefore calls on the Electoral Court to issue its reasons for judgment urgently," FUL said. Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) alliance partner the South African Communist Party (SACP) also wants the Electoral Court to release the full judgment of the order it handed down, which it says has "plunged the entire country into speculation". It wants the court to release to full judgment to allow public scrutiny of its rationale and allow the public and the IEC to determine whether there are any grounds for an appeal. The party went on to say that the Zuma brand has passed its "sell-by date". "The fact is that millions of South Africans remain unhappy about the state capture and industrial scale looting that took place with the fugitives from justice, his friends the Guptas, at the helm. No reasonable South African wants to see a return to that rot, including through the ballot," the party said.

This has been revealed to BizNews by the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Shadow Minister of Electricity, Samantha Graham-Maré, who has been struggling since July to identify the mystery funder. “I have had people contact me from as far as Dubai after our last discussion to say that they are of the opinion that it might be the Guptas who are the mystery funders…they were just saying that they had encountered the Guptas in Dubai, seen them sort of having coffee with various role players, and that smart meters were a big element of demand-side management in Dubai, and as such felt that perhaps they were keen on transferring the technology to South Africa.” Meanwhile, the DA has petitioned the ESKOM System Operator to investigate what appears to be a growing trend to issue misleading load-shedding advisories.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was this week at pains to explain to a skeptical South African public that the country's efforts to fight corruption are gaining traction. Speaking at a dialogue on building a corruption-free SA, an upbeat Ramaphosa said while there is a long road ahead, the fight against corruption is gaining momentum. Among the successes, he listed 9 separate court cases, involving 47 individuals and 21 companies, that have been brought to court. This sentiment was not shared by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo who told the dialogue that the levels of corruption have reached unacceptable proportions and called for drastic measures to be taken urgently. This came in the same week that Justice and Constitutional Development minister, Ronald Lamola, told Parliament that despite several meetings and repeated attempts to get feedback from the United Arab Emirates -UAE - on the Gupta brothers' extradition request, there has been no response. Lamola also told parliamentarians that the whereabouts of the Guptas remain unknown and they have not been charged by any law enforcement agencies in the UAE. To discuss the issues raised at the dialogue and whether South Africans should be optimistic about current efforts to fight corruption we spoke to Melusi Ncala, Senior Researcher at Corruption Watch and Mpumelelo Zikalala, a legal analyst .

The pit stops include the Badami cave temples, Aihole and Pattadakal. We start with Badami, discovering the rock cut cave temples built during the 4-5th century CE by the Badami Chalukyas as they established their political capital in Badami. The cave temples consist of 4 main caves - 3 Hindu and 1 Jain cave that have some finely sculpted temples. Keshav talks through the significance of each of these cave temples as well as subtle differences. There is Cave 5, which is a relatively newer cave that is closer to the Agastya lake and Bhootnath temple and is unique for its representation of the deities Besides the cave temples, Badami also has a mosque that was likely built during the Adil Shahi sultanate. The town is also a popular hot spot for bouldering among the local and international community. Aihole was considered to be the cultural capital of the Chalukyas and is situated a few kms away from Badami. It is considered to be the cradle of Indian temple architecture due to the sheer diversity and number of temples found here. There are over 100 temples in the main complex including Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples. THe main temples include the Durga temple, Lad Khan temple, Gaudargudi temple and the Ravan Pahadi caves. Other important temples include Ambigergudi temples complex, Jyotirlinga temples complex, Mallikarjuna temples complex, Ramalinga temples group, Veniyar shrines complex, Maddin temples group, Triyambakeshvara temples group, Kuntigudi complex. Finally, Pattadakal came into prominence between the 7th and 8th century CE and was considered as the place of coronation of the Chalukya Kings. It is often referred to as a harmonious blend of architecture styles from North and South India. The main temples include - Kadasiddheshwara temple (Nagara/North Indian style), Jambulingeshwara temple, Galaganatha Temple, Chandrashekhara Temple, Sangameshwara Temple (dravidian/vimana style), Kashi Vishwanatha Temple (rekhanagara), Virupaksha Temple (dravidian/vimana), Jain Narayana TempleLinks:Keshav's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/keshavchaturvedi9/Keshav's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/keshav.chaturvedi.37Keshav's podcast - https://shows.ivmpodcasts.com/show/tedhe-medhe-raaste-8nsu-Rh7epsqeWjEL8yjlFollow the Musafir stories on:Twitter : https://twitter.com/musafirstories?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/themusafirstories/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/musafirstoriespodcast/?hl=enwebsite: www.themusafirstories.comemail: themusafirstories@gmail.comYou can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the IVM Podcasts app on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios, or any other podcast app.You can check out our website at https://shows.ivmpodcasts.com/featuredDo follow IVM Podcasts on social media. We are @IVMPodcasts on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram.https://twitter.com/IVMPodcastshttps://www.instagram.com/ivmpodcasts/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/ivmpodcasts/Follow the show across platforms:Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, JioSaavn, Gaana, Amazon MusicDo share the word with you folks!

Two of the Guptas on Interpol's Red Notice list have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates with the focus now shifting to their extradition back to SA amid an inevitable fight back. Late on Monday evening South Africa's Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services released a veritable bombshell. It confirmed, “it has received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that fugitives of justice, namely Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been arrested.” The duo are wanted in South Africa on fraud and money laundering charges. NPA's Investigating Directorate strikes; more arrests by mid-July

The NPA's Investigating Directorate (ID) announces it is striking back against those allegedly involved with state capture. There were a string of recent Transnet-related arrests, all tied to dealings with the infamous Gupta family. The country's collective patience has worn thin and there has been little in the way of accountability to celebrate over the last decade. But, ID spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka is upbeat, telling BizNews the ID is now “striking with every arsenal we possibly can”. In this broad-ranging interview, Seboka shares the background of three of its current high-profile cases. She reveals the ID has built its fight over two years – with more cases piling up around them – against a backdrop of public criticism that more needs to be done and faster. Transnet is considered the primary site of South Africa's looting; over R41bn in irregularly awarded contracts went to the Guptas and their acolytes. Our transport SOE accounts for over 72% of all government and parastatal contracts linked to allegations of state capture. Arrests are not prosecutions but are a necessary starting point in the fight against years of impunity. In a watch-this-space atmosphere, the ID says more arrests can be expected by mid-July, with several more “seminal” cases to be enrolled in the next six months.

Jacob Zuma's presidency will be remembered for the wholesale looting of South Africa's fiscus by him, his family, his friends the Guptas, and the political party he led - but don't forget how close we came to indebting future generations with a Russian nuclear deal. The former President was hellbent on pushing the deal through despite National Treasury explaining we had no foreseeable way to fund it. Some very smart litigation by NGO Earthlife Africa ultimately scuppered the deal which the Energy Department was attempting to sneak through. In their new tell-all book, Nuclear: Inside South Africa's Secret Deal, Karyn Maughan and Kirsten Pearson make the minutiae of the R1tn nuclear deal with Russia understandable and digestible. The authors bring to life the narrative of those behind the failed nuclear project including interviews with Zuma himself, the former Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, and others. In this interview with Maughan, BizNews deputy editor Michael Appel seeks to better understand the dynamics behind the failed nuclear deal. Plus, an update on the current state of Zuma's arms deal corruption trial.

Almost 200 years after being outlawed, the practice of Sati still looms large over every academic discourse about Hindu philosophy and customs. It remains a potent symbol of deep-rooted patriarchy and cultural misogyny of pre-modern India. Time and again the banning of Sati has been invoked to argue that British colonialism helped bring a regressive Indian society out of the dark ages. Even for contemporary Indians, who are proud of their heritage and culture, Sati Partha poses a strange predicament. How did a civilisation so advanced in science and philosophy, that produced great thinkers through the ages such as Mahavira, Gautam Buddha, Kabir Das, Adi Shankara, and many more oddly remained comfortable with a practice so barbarous? With so many glorious periods under numerous Indian dynasties from Guptas to Vijayanagara, Mughals to Marathas, why did India need a foreign  mercantilist power to ultimately put an end to this cruel and inhuman custom? It is important to address these questions as they play a key role in how we Indians see ourselves as a people. Were our ancestors really as backward and superstitious as we are told? And did India really need the enlightened Victorians to free her from its social evils?  Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum.
