with @ahall_research @eddylazzarin @0xShuel  @smc90In this episode, we cover both recent events + evergreen governance questions in political systems: Specifically, we breakdown the recent Compound “governance attack”... as well as the broader topic of DAO governance and voting in general. We also discuss how to avoid, prevent, and respond to such governance attacks -- highlighting key differences between on-chain/ token-based/ digital voting systems vs. physical-world political systems around the world. What happens when you have activity from actors that the majority doesn't necessarily agree with? How do you distinguish between good-faith and bad-faith activity, especially on-chain? And other such tricky questions?? Our experts answering these questions (in conversation with Sonal Chokshi) include: - a16z crypto CTO Eddy Lazzarin;- head of network operations Ross Shuel;- and a16z crypto research collaborator, and Stanford professor of political science, Andrew Hall. The episode begins by quickly recapping the exact sequence of a recent Compound governance “attack” event a few weeks ago -- including discussing whether “governance attack” is the right label for it or not; how it's different from other attacks; and the broader trend of online vs offline governance attacks in general -- before then going into specific solutions. The team also shares some behind-scenes tick tock on what happened, how people figure out motives behind actions on-chain (especially given the "indistinguishability problem"), and much more. Pieces mentioned in this episode and other resources:DAO governance attacks, and how to avoid them by Pranav Garimidi, Scott Duke Kominers, Tim RoughgardenThe DUNA: An Oasis For DAOs by Miles Jennings and David KerrGovernance FAQs by Andrew HallA new financial model for app tokens: How to generate cash flows by Mason Hall, Porter Smith, Miles Jennings, and Ross Shuelall things DAOs on a16zcrypto.comall things decentralization on a16zcrypto.comVoting, Security, and Governance in Blockchains (a16z Podcast, 2019) with Phil Daian and Ali Yahya (see also "On-Chain Vote Buying and the Rise of Dark DAOs" by Phil Daian, Tyler Kell, Ian Miers, and Ari Juels)PoS Blockchains - Designs, Consensus, Attacks (web3 with a16z Podcast, 2022) with Valeria Nikolaenko, Tim Roughgarden, Sonal ChokshiLightspeed Democracy: What web3 organizations can learn from the history of governance by Andrew Hall and Porter SmithGoverning democracy, the internet, and boardrooms (web3 with a16z Podcast, 2024) with Noah Feldman, Andrew Hall, Robert HackettAs a reminder: None of this should be taken as business, investment, legal, or tax advice; please see a16z.com/disclosures for more important information -- including a link to a list of our investments.

The average household in the U.S., alone, consumes 300 gallons of water per day, or 100,000 a year. If every American household used a mere 5% less water daily, 600 billion gallons of water annually would be conserved. To address this challenge while delighting consumers with beautiful, functional products, Moen offers the Smart Water Network. Via technology and an app that integrates with Google, Alexa, Ring and more, program your shower to a specific temperature. Tell your tap how much pressure you want. Get your water to do what you want at home -- and keep an eye on it when you're out. Moen's Mason Hall delves into the many ways that his company's technology is harnessing perhaps our most precious resource.

What responsibilities do corporations have in the communities where they work? Host Billy Shore welcomes two guests from Sodexo, Inc.: Chief Diversity and Sustainability Officer for the Americas Gerri Mason Hall, and Director of Culinary Delivery Desmond Fannin to discuss diversity, equity and inclusion within their company and society at large as well as the impact COVID-19 has had on their work. Sodexo is a No Kid Hungry partner and Add Passion and Stir sponsor. “What organizations have to do is recognize talent, recognize those underrepresented, and create opportunities... Part of my job is to recognize that talent, often overlooked because of unconscious biases,” explains Mason Hall. “You know [the discrimination] is there, and you… have a responsibility to push through because other people will need to navigate those waters as well,” observes Fannin. When schools were forced to close earlier this year, Sodexo ramped up their anti-hunger efforts. “In this pandemic when schools shut down, we continued to serve because we know how critical it is for children to have access to food. We had to think differently and still support the community,” says Mason Hall. “We’ll get through this pandemic, but what’s the next thing? We’re trying to partner with school districts on is how can we connect the dots to a school as a hub,” she adds. Join us for this insightful conversation about social responsibility with two innovative leaders from a leading anti-hunger champion.

The Next Generation: Changing Culture and Changing the World

How can the next generation change our culture to solve social problems? In this special episode of Add Passion and Stir made possible by generous support from the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, Gerri Mason Hall, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Sodexo and Chair of the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, and Derek Brown, owner of Columbia Room in Washington DC, have a lively discussion about diversity and inclusion, young leaders, culture change, and classic cocktails. Mason Hall, Brown and hosts Share Our Strength co-founders Debbie and Billy Shore believe that the fresh, uncynical passion of our youth can solve major social problems. The recent activity around gun control is a prime example. “One of the most exciting things is the fresh eyes to an approach at problem solving,” says Mason Hall, who focuses on enabling young people through Sodexo’s work and the No Kid Hungry Youth Ambassador Program. Brown is proud that he empowers his employees to protect others, working closely with Collective Action for Safe Spaces to train employees about recognizing and intervening when they see sexual harassment or violence. Billy Shore shares their hopefulness about youth changing the future. “Sometimes there’s an advantage to ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’…you don’t get discouraged, you don’t get disappointed, you think everything can change,” he says. Both guests also value culture change. Mason Hall has spent decades building a culture of diversity and inclusion at Sodexo. “In the early 2000s, the emphasis was on representation - especially women and minorities - in the workplace… Now we’re not just focused on numbers coming in, but how inclusive is the culture,” she explains. She relishes playing the role of mentor for a younger generation and helping them turn their vision into change. “It is this diversity of thought that together will help us innovate and solve these problems,” she says. Brown is noted for creating change in how the next DC generation feels about alcohol through his emphasis on well-made culinary cocktails. “We’re really turning drinking more into a ritual…you’re not focusing on quantity, you’re focusing on quality,” he says. A historian of alcohol, he describes its place in American culture. “Our culture has a particular relationship with alcohol… and we have changed it through creating these cocktail bars that are a little different,” he believes.Share in this informative and fun conversation between two leaders mentoring the next generation in their respective fields.

Steinem celebrated the memory of celebrated literary critic, writer and former City College professor Addison Gayle in a lecture entitled “The Longest Revolution.” She was introduced by a panel of four speakers. Jeffrey Peck, dean of Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, called her an “icon of the feminist movement.” Kathleen Waldron, Baruch college president spoke of being “inspired” by Steinem and communications Professor Sara Ryan called her a “courageous feminist leader.” Lastly, “the most humane individual I've met,” were the words used to describe Steinem by English Professor Tuzyline Allan, who is in charge of organizing the Addison Gayle Memorial Lecture series. Mrs. Steinem spoke of her experience working with Addison Gayle back when she first started out as a journalist. She worked with him “at a time when he was thought of as Negro, not African-American or American,” she said. They both shared “empathy for their audience.” Mrs. Steinem looks to a future where people won't think that “your genitals control your brain or that the pigment of your skin matters.” She calls these race and gender categories “fiction.” We should not concentrate on the generalized differences. It's the unique differences that are important, according to Steinem. Steinem stressed that the civil rights and women's movement, as well as the strides made in gay and lesbian rights propelled in tandem. The confluence of individuals challenging the status quo fueled the radical changes that took place during the 60s. The event takes place on April 1, 2009, at Mason Hall, Baruch College."

An original and daring artist, Judy Chicago is an icon of both the feminist movement and the postmodern aesthetic. Her book The Dinner Party: From Creation to Preservation is the story of her single most famous and important work—a landmark in the history of 20th century art and feminist consciousness. Levin’s biography Becoming Judy Chicago traces Chicago’s journey from childhood and adolescence to a growing fascination with the nature of what it means to be a woman. Myrna Chase, Dean of the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences makes the welcoming remarks. A Q&A with the audience follows the conversation between Chicago and Levin."
