The Vacants to Value initiative in the administration of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake made some progress, but the number of vacant properties, about 16,000, hasn't changed significantly over the last decade. Nneka N'namdi describes herself as a “technoartivist,” who is applying her tech and creative skills to the cause of restoring neighborhoods that are ravaged by blight. She is the founder of the non-profit, Fight Blight BMore. Nneka N'namdi joins us on Zoom… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Under his leadership, since 2016, the program has grown to a staff of 16 advocates serving over 150 youth versus 2 advocates serving 2 youth at the time he took over the program. Through his efforts, a grant was awarded to YAP through the Criminal Justice Council allowing his work to expand to at-risk youth in elementary schools. He recently began a partnership with the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, Johns Hopkins and the Urban Institute, working with low-income youth participating in the Youth Employment Study. Ian serves passionately as the elected Vice-President of the Browntown Civic Association. In addition to his professional work, Ian has donated his time and musical talents to numerous community organizations geared towards strengthening the City of Wilmington. His passion for serving began in college. After receiving his degree in Social Science with a minor in Political Science, from Coppin State University, Ian began volunteering for various communities and national organizations, such as the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, where he learned the fundamentals of community organizing, grassroots planning, fundraising, and civic leadership. As a recognized activist in Baltimore, Ian was acknowledged by then-Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and current City Council President Brandon Scott for his work with the 300 Men Movement, an elite male, volunteer unit which conducted violence deterrence walkthroughs in targeted high-crime neighborhoods. Throughout his career, Ian has been a key influencer, building relationships with individuals and community organizations in order to generate meaningful resources for families and neighborhoods. He will bring that same drive, integrity and commitment to his role as your City Councilman. It is because of his decades of experience, hands-on work with the most vulnerable individuals and families, and dedication to various community organizations that Ian is confident in his ability to affect meaningful change as the next Councilman for the Sixth District. Ian and his wife live in Browntown with their two miniature poodles, Ming and Charlie, and are loving godparents to their 5 godchildren, nieces and nephews.

After the National Guard went back to their barracks, after the fire at the CVS Drugstore at the corner of Penn and North was extinguished, and after the curfews were lifted, there was a frenzy of finger pointing as to how the city responded to the crisis. The Mayor at the time, Stephanie Rawlings Blake, would decide a few months later not to seek re-election. Today, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh joins Tom in Studio A. Like Mayor Martin O’Malley, Mayor Sheila Dixon, and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake before her, last Friday, Mayor Pugh fired the city's police commissioner. Kevin Davis was an outsider who had come to Baltimore after tenures in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties. He was replaced by a 30-year veteran of the Baltimore Police, Darryl DeSousa. The Mayor’s mandate to her Commissioner-designate is clear: improve violence reduction, and turn around our city’s crime numbers, which are at historic levels. The first few weeks of this New Year have not been easy for the city: multiple maintenance crises in city schools, the announcement by Amazon that we are out of the running for their new headquarters, the shuttering of the only big box department store in West Baltimore, and hovering above it all: murders on our streets that continue at an alarming rate. Mayor Pugh points to several areas in which the city is making progress. The Police training academy has a full class preparing to join the force. Bloomberg Philanthropies has invested millions to improve technology for law enforcement, and to train young entrepreneurs. The Safe Streets program is being expanded, and a new violence reduction program that has shown promise in Boston is being bought to Baltimore. The Mayor has spoken of changing the narrative about our city. She talks about how she plans to do that in today's Midday with the Mayor.

In December 2014, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake appointed Dr. Leana Wen as Baltimore City Health Commissioner. In her first year on the job, Dr. Wen would encounter challenges she never could have anticipated -- including the arrest and death of Freddie Gray in police custody, the ensuing unrest in the city and the subsequent announcement that Rawlings-Blake would not seek re-election. In this episode of Female Trouble, a podcast spotlighting women in Baltimore, Dr. Wen speaks to Quinn about the challenges of overcoming stigmas in addiction and mental health treatment, the advice she's been told to follow as a woman, and how she stays optimistic and driven when faced with Baltimore's health disparities.

Rob Weinhold, a former Baltimore police officer and one-time spokesman for the department, is a student of crisis management -- how leaders deal with tough times and threats to their reputations and careers. Now chief executive of the Fallston Group, a Baltimore-based crisis management and communications firm, Weinhold has a lot to say about Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's actions and statements during the unrest that hit Baltimore following the death in police custody of Freddie Gray last April. Weinhold also talks about the public relations problems experienced by Cafe Hon a few years ago, and how former Baltimore Police Commissioner Ed Norris and former Mayor Sheila Dixon handled their problems with the law. Weinhold is the author, along with former Sun columnist Kevin Cowherd, of "The Art of Crisis Management," published by Apprentice House Press at Loyola University Maryland.
