EP95: Q&A on Long-Term Impacts of War in Iran

This week we address five questions that have arisen regarding our views on the potential long-term impacts of the war in Iran.* Does our Super-Spike oil demand destruction framework need adjusting for an abrupt geopolitical spike?* What advance warning signs are we watching to assess economic damage and risks to capital markets?* How does Iran impact our view of the traditional energy profitability cycle and terminal value recognition?* Does the war change which regions we prefer for future CAPEX?* How does Iran impact our Power Surge (power super-cycle) view?Subscribe to receive all content. Also available at Veriten.com.SLIDE 3: Super-Spike Framework In A Geopolitical Event?Key points:* Our March 2005 “Super-Spike” framework was used to assess how high oil prices could reach in order to slow oil demand growth to levels of available supply in an environment of structurally strong global GDP growth (BRICs expansion).* We chose “super” to indicate the oil upcycle was multi-year in nature. We chose “spike” to remind ourselves and our clients that inevitably oil would surely rollover as cycle dynamics ensured a future period of oversupply (or under-demand).* At the end of the day, the super-cycle is always one of sector profitability, with oil prices just one (important) component along with costs and capital intensity.Current environment:* The War in Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz is not analogous to that 2004-2014 period. This is an acute geopolitical disruption.* Therefore, the framework we used over 2004-2014 has its limitations. Most notably, the sudden, dramatic jump in oil prices could mean that absolute levels do not need to reach the heights implied in the table on the right.* It also suggests that “Super Vol” remains the better framing for energy commodity markets, including crude oil, oil products, and global spot LNG prices.* Be wary of perma bears and perma bulls! For the bears: cycles have to play out. For bulls: it is always a cycle.Exhibit 1: “Super-Spike” oil demand destruction frameworkSource: Bloomberg, EIA, Federal Reserve, Veriten.SLIDE 4: What Advance Warning Signs Are We Watching?* Bull to bear can happen quickly and unexpectedly…July to December 2008 saw WTI drop from over $140/bbl to under $40/bbl.* How can one differentiate between the July 2007 collapse of two Bear Stearns credit funds and the March 2023 issues with Silicon Valley Bank?* So why worry this time? The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is simply intolerable if measured in months rather than weeks. The Age of Drones is a game changer, as we see in Russia-Ukraine.* Fortress balance sheet, understanding controls and contracts, and aiming to not only survive but thrive during turmoil is the goal.SLIDE 5: How Does Iran Impact The Profitability CycleKey points:* It remains our view that traditional energy is firmly within a new profitability super-cycle that began in 2021 and would be expected to last 10+ years.* Structural profitability cycles are inherently long-term in nature, 10-15 years up, 10-15 years down. The prior downcycle ran from a 2010 peak to a 2020 trough.* Within the structural up or down cycles, numerous mini-cycles occur along the way. We believe 2025 marked a “normal” trough following a 2.5 years mini-downcycle.* We rejected “oil glut” arguments that have prevailed since Liberation Day (April 2025). We agree that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz renders impossible a true accounting of who was right—oil glutters or us.Current environment:* We have been surprised by the fact that capital discipline at the sector level has remained intact.* A true, multi-year upcycle would undoubtedly test discipline. But let's judge it as we go: so far, so good.* The main risk to seeing a “deep trough” (as opposed to normal) would be an extended closure of the Strait and a collapse in the global economy. We take this risk seriously.* The best case scenario for the profitability cycle would be a quick re-opening that ensured limited adverse global GDP impacts.Exhibit 2: Traditional energy sector profitabilitySource: Bloomberg, FactSet, VeritenSLIDE 6: Does The War Change Regional CAPEX Preferences?* There are no absolutes…it is all opportunity specific.* Oil exploration: Algeria vs UK North Sea circa 1991-1994.* Natural gas import infrastructure: New York state (Appalachia) versus Germany (Russia).* Many areas of the Middle East will attract capital irrespective of how this plays out.* Between COVID, Russia-Ukraine, and now Strait of Hormuz, supply chain security will remain ascendent as an issue. Positive for NAM, power, energy source diversification (new and old tech).SLIDE 7: What Impact Is There On Our Power Surge View?* If a general financial/credit crisis materializes, this is a sector that commonly uses leverage and is now in growth mode.* There will be winners and there will be losers.* Execution: Understanding contracts, supply chains, and liquidity are all critical.* At the end of the day, Power Surge we think persists beyond and through this war due to the need to grow power generation to address aging western world grids, industrial reshoring, electrification, and AI & digital transformation.⚡️On A Personal Note: Super-Spike ReactionsFor On A Personal Note, we refer you to the video where Arjun further reflects on his March 30, 2005 “Super-Spike period may be upon us” report.

After five tumultuous years as head of Air New Zealand, CEO Greg Foran is preparing to hang up his wings this October. Between COVID-19 border closures, fleet delays, maintenance issues and other problems, it's fair to say the Kiwi flag carrier has had a rough half-decade – but how well has it weathered the storm? On location in Auckland, Australian Aviation's Jake Nelson talks to Foran about his tenure, what he might have done differently, and what might be next for the airline. Plus, Adam and Jake discuss the rest of the week's news, including Qantas' ongoing attempts to draw a line under the Joyce era. Jake Nelson travelled as a guest of Air New Zealand.

Between COVID-19, Avian Influenza, and African Swine Fever, ordinary consumers are more aware than ever of the risks of infectious diseases on animal and human health, and to society at large. Ag technology that helps farmers better prevent the spread of diseases is more relevant than ever, and that was a big part of the motivation for today's guest, Rob Hannam, CEO of Farm Health Guardian. But Farm Health Guardian was far from the only livestock biosecurity agtech company in the space, and at some point, when the team came in contact with a competitor with a complementary suite of technologies, they did something unusual. The two companies merged.Given the current state of agtech funding and global financial markets, we thought the time was right to invite Rob on to talk about how he and his team first started exploring the idea of a merger, how they thought about the decision, and how it helped them unlock new opportunities and a more complete product. For more information and resources, visit our website. The information in this post is not investment advice or a recommendation to invest. Another day, another strike. Yes, it's the teachers again. In an industry crippled by lack of performance, they have divided yet another day of not turning up at work is somehow going to help kids get ahead in the world. Our email came through yesterday morning saying that the strike that was on, was put off, until it was put back on again after the latest pay offer was rejected. Say whatever you want about ACT, but they are at least consistent in their general view of life; and that is, we need to be better. In too many aspects of life these days we are haphazard, if not lackadaisical, if not outright abysmal. Their argument is that the 439 schools that haven't bothered to report their attendance data to the ministry should lose their funding until they do. Attendance is a crisis. As I told you the other day, they are worried in NSW about attendance rates dropping below 80 per cent. We are at 49 per cent. And while we are at 49 per cent teachers think it's a great idea to keep withdrawing their labour. So, by the time you get the industrial action, the holidays, the teachers only days, the paid union meeting days, half days, the absenteeism and the minister leading the way with her disgraceful performance in the house around attendance figures, you have yourself a pretty dire ol' set of circumstances. As I mentioned at the start of all this industrial action, most of us have sympathy with the teachers plight. Most of us get that the good ones are shockingly paid. But that starts to wear thin after a few too many days off and a bit too much inconvenience. I also mentioned the other day that there is a practical solution to the problem - performance pay. Unions don't want it and most teachers don't want it because, heaven forbid, you'd actually find out who was up to it and who was there merely making up the numbers. And so a large grouping expects more money, not for more performance, or better outcomes. But merely because the cost-of-living is a mess, and they inconvenience whoever they want, until they get what they want. Once again, the kids stay at home. History will show that this current crop of students was let down shockingly. Between Covid, the lockdowns, the piecemeal credit giveaways, the abysmal test results around numeracy, literacy etc, and the seemingly never-ending strikes, it doesn't get a lot worse than what they are having to put up with. It's a rare old day that a system that fails so badly, has the temerity to inconvenience so many for their own ends.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's been a very creative period. It's helped me to figure some things out.But.I am also realizing there's healing that can only happen in community. And I also have work to do in the world that requires contact with other humans. So May has been the month of venturing out of the cave and throwing myself ungracefully back into the world of human connection.Going on vacation with friends. Sleeping on the couch of an AirBNB. Sharing a kitchen. (HUGE.)Hiking with others. Putting my slowness, my weakness, and my weirdness on full display.I have definitely made mistakes and been a jerk. But I've also learned A TON. Stuff you literally can't learn on those solo spiritual getaways. So in today's episode, I talk about what this part of my healing journey — that is happening in community — is revealing. Branta Lockett moved through her educational odyssey at the highest levels. W.E.B. DuBois would have absolutely drafted her for his Talented Tenth All Star Team. Highly Gifted and Talented, International Baccalaureate, Brown University, she brought her sterling credentials to Denver, hoping to be the difference for all students, especially Black students. Her first two years as a Denver teacher were, simply put, "great." But by year three, things began to unravel. She witnessed disproportionate disciplinary actions taken against Black boys. Still new to the work, she became a voice of advocacy for students and community. Her evaluation scores took a jarring dip. She changed roles, and found no support in any of them. Between COVID-19 and anti-Black dynamics within the union, she took the leap. The 5280 Freedom School, inspired by the Civil Rights era's Mississippi Freedom Schools, launched first as a summer program. After having their charter initially rejected, they are poised to open their doors in "Harlem of the West," the Five Points neighborhood. This story is at once a cautionary tale and a call to action. One of the things that we were designed for is relationships (see Genesis 2:18). And this shouldn't surprise us because we are made in the image of our God who is Himself a community (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Perhaps that is why this past year has been so difficult: it has been a year in which we are not only separated physically, but separated relationally. Between COVID and cultural conflict, social media fights and social division, it is no wonder we are exhausted, worn down, and depressed. But it doesn't have to be this way.

When it comes to ethics in nursing, easy answers are hard to come by. ANA's Bioethicist Liz Stokes says that the questions she helps nurses tackle are rarely a case of “wrong vs. right,” but rather “right vs. right,” and her job is to help ANA's members think through those issues in a constructive and ethical way. Between COVID-19 and increasing urgency on conversations around health equity, Liz is fielding more ethical questions than ever these days, and in this episode of The Handoff, she speaks with Dan about what she's hearing.  Liz shares insights into the kinds of ethical dilemmas she's seeing nurses struggle with as a result of COVID-19 and how they are weighing their professional obligations to deliver care against a lack of PPE and other resources. She recommends several resources for nurses working on the frontlines of the pandemic.  Liz and Dan also discuss the intersection of racial justice and the nursing profession, and the tools for nurses who want to avoid health disparities in their own organizations. One surprising insight? While we often talk about the intersection of racism and healthcare as it relates to patients, Liz says she is often asked by ANA members about the racism that they experience from their patients.  You can reach Liz at ethics(at)ana(dot)org Links to recommended reading:  https://asbh.org/ https://www.healthynursehealthynation.org/  https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/work-environment/health-safety/disaster-preparedness/coronavirus/what-you-need-to-know/the-well-being-initiative/ https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/nursing-excellence/ethics/code-of-ethics-for-nurses/ https://www.trustedhealth.com/mental-health  https://www.trustedhealth.com/blog/the-burden-of-caring-the-moral-injury-of-covid-19  The full transcript for this episode can be found here: www.trustedhealth.com/the-handoff-podcast/liz-stokes

2020 has been a politically charged year. Between Covid 19, the upcoming election, debates about health and safety vs rights and religious freedom, and now the recent murder of George Floyd and the following Black Lives Matter protests, one thing has become clear: our nation is divided. America is caught in a never-ending culture war between left and right, and many on both sides of the divide see the battle as a clear cut case of “good vs evil”. Aaron sits down with Scott Curran, the resident church planter at Park Hill Church, to discuss the deep political divide and how followers of Christ can rise above it, be lights in a dark culture, and make a difference for the Kingdom of God. We hope this conversation is helpful to you as you seek to follow the Way of Jesus in the difficult days we find ourselves in.
