Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident podcast, I spoke with Laura Miranda Perez, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at Oxford PV, about one of the most important developments in solar tech today: perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. We unpacked how Oxford PV's approach improves solar panel efficiency from the typical 20–22% to over 30%, and why that matters not just for land use, but also for grid capacity, system costs, and the speed of global decarbonisation. Laura also explained how tandem cells work, why silicon has hit a performance ceiling, and how perovskite offers a new path forward. We dug into the real-world implications:Why higher efficiency panels lower the cost of electricity, not just hardwareHow tandem solar can reduce emissions by 20% or more, even compared to conventional solarWhat's holding Europe back in solar manufacturing, despite strong deployment figuresWhy utilities, not just residential customers, are driving early demand for Oxford PV's techLaura also addressed common misconceptions about solar, including whether it works in cloudy weather and the overblown concerns about solar panel waste. If you're working in clean energy, manufacturing, or just curious about where solar is headed, this is a must-listen conversation.

Happy International Women's Day, one of my favourite days of the year! While of course, we deserve to be celebrated every day of the year, I always love the way this day encourages amazing conversations, displays of support for each other and even just telling someone in your close circle that you love and appreciate having them in your life. This year, it's meant even more to me as I tippy toe right on the doorstep of motherhood - I've always been a raging feminist but I've never had more appreciation for the strength and resilience of women than experiencing pregnancy. We are fierce, powerful and even more so when we unite together so happy IWD to you all and to the allies who love and support the women in their lives. Even though we dropped a chaotic #yaysofourlives ep just a few days ago, I've got a special guest for the occasion patching in from stateside! As you know, we've been lucky to partner with Sunpower and have had the most amazing transition to solar energy, so today we have their Chief Legal & Sustainability Officer on the show, Lindsey Wiedmann. In this episode, we look at a report I wrote in partnership with Vodafone UK to examine how 5G Standalone (5G SA) could transform UK over the next 5-7 years. To talk more about the findings, I spoke with Nicki Lyons, Vodafone UK's Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer. Some of the predictions in the report include:We'll see the end of Video Assisted Referee (VAR) and poor off-side decision-making thanks to smart ball tech, pitch sensors and player wearables enabled by 5G Standalone (5G SA) – meaning more time is devoted to the beautiful game and less time on disputes.Connected clothing will mean trainers will ‘talk' to each other and collate style and sustainability-inspired looks from other feet on the street, powering your very own AI-powered style guide – enabling fashionistas to discover styles and express themselves in new ways.Working with Vodafone, in a new report, leading futurist Andrew Grill predicts how 5G SA could transform the things the UK loves most in the next five-to-seven years – from retail and sports to gaming and entertainment. The report supports the growing need for 5G SA infrastructure in the UK, as the proposed Vodafone and Three merger paves the way for UK 5G SA leadership with a pledge to invest £11 billion and reach over 99% of the UK population with 5G SA by 2034.More on Nicki LyonsNicki became Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability in October 2021. She previously served as our Chief Communications Officer from June 2014 to February 2021. Liliana sets the vision and strategy for all communications with franchisees and employees, public relations, government relations and corporate responsibility. Her work with the Quality Assurance function involves developing quality and safety procedures throughout our supply chain and restaurants to provide a safe and quality dining experience for all Wendy's customers. Liliana prides herself on building diverse teams and empowering them to find solutions – a leadership style that has produced notable results. Her team recently restructured Wendy's corporate responsibility efforts under one united banner, Good Done Right, and created our Supplier Code of Conduct. Under her direction, Wendy's also launched The Square Deal, Wendy's blog to provide a point of view on issues that are important to our Company and our customers. Prior to Wendy's, Liliana served as Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at Dean Foods in Dallas, TX. Her previous experience includes tenure as Public Affairs Manager with Mars, Incorporated in New Jersey, and as a public relations consultant for eight years in New York City. Liliana Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Defining responsible sourcing and identifying criteria for responsibly sourcing food What consumers are looking for in the industry in regards to sustainability The process of starting GHG inventories, CDP reporting, and setting science-based targets Wendy's “Good done right” goals for food, people and footprint Tying sustainability performance to incentives Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Liliana's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? The advice that I would give is just to be a sponge for learning and for relationships and networking with others in the field. I would not have considered myself a sustainability professional even 10 years ago. There is so much to learn. There is so much to absorb. I don't think anyone can be an expert in all of it. I think really broadening your aperture so that you have the benefit of expertise from others that are in different aspects of your field is something that I really value. Probably the most important resource that I see in the field is people. Hopefully you can provide some value to them in terms of the expertise and the knowledge that you have, but also continuing to build those relationships and reach out and network to increase your effectiveness. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? The biggest is just the awareness and the general knowledge and interest in this area. That takes a lot of different forms and different parts of the industry, different stakeholders are coming at it with different points of view. But I think that there's never been a better time to really be demonstrating the value and the importance of sustainability work within the business community. I feel like the conversation I'm not having anymore is around “why should we care about this?” Does this actually add to our business value? Is there a strong rationale for being focused on ESG or sustainability? Now the conversation is much more around, “where should we be putting our precious resources?” Where can our efforts be most successful and most effective? What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I'll go to the classics. There's certainly lots of more contemporary examples, but I think Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. I was in college when I read it. That really started to open my eyes around not just the importance of a focus on the environment and on sustainability, but a factual, well researched, analysis of what was happening and what we as a society could do to make a more positive impact. I know that's a classic, but I think it's still relevant today. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? To repeat myself, people. I really do collect and curate a great network of people that come from all different backgrounds and perspectives and areas of expertise. The more that I can connect and engage with people that do things that are very different than what I do professionally, I just grow and learn from that. And then a plug for you Josh and your colleagues for podcasts like this one. I usually go for a run every day and I've got a collection of podcasts and other things that, that that's the soundtrack to my daily runs because I feel like there's always something new coming out to help us just learn and get better. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the sustainability work being done at Wendy's? We would love for you to hop over to wendys.com and click on the what we value segment of our website. You can find our corporate responsibility reports for 2022 and the years in the past, and then certainly a wealth of information about the company and our commitments overall.

A conversation with Cristina Domenecq, Impact & Sustainability Officer at CrowdFarming, about direct-to-consumer platforms, consumers ready to buy long term, farmers ready to supply long term, transparency and more.Did you think that direct to consumer platforms always have to be small and cute? Think again, Cristina works at a company reaching over 350.000 customers and selling over products from more than 250 farmers. All organic, in the transition towards and now they are starting to figure out what regenerative means to them. This is a fascinating approach: first build the scale with organic, something that is usually already much better than conventional (and they have the LCA data to prove that from an emissions point of view, let alone the taste), and after having build this platform of both consumers ready to buy long term and be part of this transition and farmers ready to supply long term, be very transparent and go on a journey towards better soil health. Crowdfarming is getting ready to really push further into impact.---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. “If we want to accelerate all the efforts in order to decarbonize and to fight against climate change, we have to go three times faster, three times stronger. We have all the technologies, but how to speed it up, how to make sure that it's deployed even faster,” Gwenaelle Avice Huet on Electric Ladies Podcast There's a quiet transformation happening in our communities that will literally save lives, and it's led by women who don't make the headlines. It's the infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives. These are the systems that we only notice when they break down, or we have service delays or other problems, including when extreme weather takes them out. Listen to Gwenaelle Avice Huet, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer of Schneider Electric discuss what our infrastructure needs to be more resilient and what's being done to do so in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: How to increase the resilience of our current infrastructure. How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference. How her experience in France and in various aspects of the energy and sustainability sector, gives her a unique perspective. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “I would say first sometimes we are, as a woman, we are, I would say forbidding ourselves some evolutions because we think it's either inappropriate or because we want to have the right balance between private life and professional life. And we fear that an evolution could jeopardize this balance. I would say that you have to think internally how to make it happen and never give up on what you feel inside.” Gwenaelle Avice Huet on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's related Forbes articles here too.
