Thinking Christian: Clear Theology for a Confusing World
Mending the Fracturing Church: Discipleship, Trauma, and Trust (Andrew Hall)

Thinking Christian: Clear Theology for a Confusing World

In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer is joined by Rev. Dr. Andrew Hale, pastor, author, and host of CBF Conversations and Clergy Confessions, to discuss his new book Mending the Fracturing Church: How to Navigate Conflict and Build Trust for Thriving Communities. Drawing on decades of ministry experience—and insights from cognitive psychology, social psychology, trauma studies, and theology—Andrew argues that church conflict today cannot be understood merely as a theological or political problem. Instead, it reflects deeper issues of discipleship, anxiety, embodied trauma, media fragmentation, and generational formation. James and Andrew explore why church conflict feels uniquely intense in this moment, even though the church has alwaysbeen marked by disagreement. They examine how political polarization, algorithm-driven media, generational divides, and unaddressed physiological stress shape congregational life—often overwhelming the formative power of Scripture and worship. A central claim of the conversation is that discipleship has failed to keep pace with formation pressures. Congregants spend far more time immersed in outrage-driven media ecosystems than in practices that shape Christlike humility, patience, and love of neighbor. The result is a church increasingly reactive, defensive, and fragile. The episode also wrestles with difficult but necessary questions: Is church fracture rooted less in ideology and more in unresolved trauma? How do time, patience, and humility function in genuine spiritual formation? What happens when faithfulness is reduced to being “right” rather than honoring one another? How do different generations carry distinct “prototypes” of Jesus shaped by their historical circumstances? Rather than offering quick fixes, Andrew calls churches back to slow, relational work: intergenerational presence, shared meals, play, embodied practices, and renewed attention to the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Drawing from Acts 2, the Gospels, and family systems theory, he argues that healing church communities begins not with better programming, but with learning to be with one another again. This episode is a candid, hopeful, and theologically grounded conversation for anyone who loves the church and wants to see it become healthier, more faithful, and more resilient in a fractured age. Daria Grace revives century-old pop In the early 2000s, many Brooklyn bands explored offbeat styles. A Village Voice cover story in 2008 chronicled the borough's talented country scene and mentioned Kings County Queens, one of many music projects juggled by Daria Grace, who by 2013 had become a fixture in the Beacon music scene. Another of Grace's bands, Daria Grace & The Pre-War Ponies, performed obscure pop tunes from the 1920s through the 1940s culled from her sheet-music collection. The group last appeared in Beacon a decade ago at Quinn's, but the drought ends Friday (Jan. 30) at Lucky Dog, a new venue located at Beacon Music Factory. Grace doesn't read notes or play the piano, but arrangements from the period often included ukulele chords as Americans became enamored with Hawaiian sounds, so she learned to strum the four-stringed instrument and recorded the album Introducing The Pre-War Ponies in 2007. The band still plays in Brooklyn once a month. Grace mines old ditties that are easy on the ears but never made it into The Great American Songbook. The Ponies retrieve lesser-known gems from hitmakers Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter, along with tunes by unsung writers who cranked them out on Tin Pan Alley. During the years between the world wars, lyricists often disguised risque blues references, but the title of "Pettin' in the Park," which appeared in the film Gold Diggers of 1933, states the obvious. On the surface, "The Gentleman Just Wouldn't Say Goodnight" seems similar to the now-controversial song "Baby, It's Cold Outside," about a guy cajoling a woman to stick around and pitch some woo. In the gentleman tune, however, written by Don Reid and Dave Terry, a couple wakes up at the crack of dawn and, it turns out, "the lady didn't want to say goodnight" either. The band's recording of the song on their more elaborate second disc, Get Out Under the Moon (2015), features a languid trombone solo by Grace's chief collaborator, J. Walter Hawkes, who also sings and plays soprano ukulele. The touch of brass enhances the vibe, since these songs date to the horn-dominated Big Band era. Also appearing at Lucky Dog will be Willie Martinez on drums and Andrew Hall on standup bass. Grace, whose bread-and-butter instrument is the electric bass, has toured and recorded with many bands as a gun for hire. In the Ponies, "I'm the singer, so it is my baby, although Walter has been along for the ride from the beginning and is integral to the sound." Delivering live shows with professional polish, she sings with pitch-perfect flow and phrasing. Because smaller ukuleles can't achieve much heft, Grace plays a baritone version, which resembles a guitar and adds depth to the sound. In 2008, she and then-husband Jack Grace left Brooklyn for Woodstock and ended up in Beacon five years later when they moved into the backyard cottage of George Mansfield, then co-owner of Dogwood (now Cooper's). As a member of The Wynotte Sisters, Grace's taste is impeccable: One favorite is the hipster pearl, "Give Me the Moon Over Brooklyn," written by Terry Shand and Jason Matthews. Guy Lombardo released a recording in 1946. "While touring, I was always on the lookout for old sheet music in junk shops," she says. "But someone from Texas gave that to me." Lucky Dog is located at 333 Fishkill Ave. in Beacon; the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20. See dub.sh/BMF–tickets

Cold Spring Avoids DEC Fines

Village says sewage treatment issues rectified Cold Spring will not face financial penalties following four instances in which fecal coliform and biochemical oxygen demand discharges from the wastewater treatment plant on Fair Street exceeded acceptable levels. According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the discharges occurred between August 2024 and August 2025. The DEC issued a Notice of Violation in October that could have resulted in penalties of up to $37,500 per day. A state inspection of the plant in September identified three other infractions: an expired operating permit, an unlicensed assistant plant operator, and the use of an uncalibrated flow meter. At the Wednesday (Dec. 10) meeting of the Village Board, Mayor Kathleen Foley shared recent correspondence from the DEC stating that the agency was satisfied with the measures taken to address the violations and that no fines would be levied. Foley addressed what she described as "a lot of misunderstanding" about the violations. She noted that wastewater discharges and village drinking water are tested twice daily and that the village was not "caught" in the violations. "We reported our own violations" to the state and the Putnam County Health Department, she said, adding that municipalities are allowed up to four discharges that exceed acceptable levels before the DEC will inspect a plant. "At no point was raw sewage or untreated water discharged into the Hudson River; it was always treated," Foley said, explaining that the fecal coliform levels were immediately brought back to the acceptable range after bacteria levels in the plant's digesters had dropped. The village is paying tuition for Landon Wood, an employee of the water and wastewater department, to be trained as an assistant plant operator. He is expected to be licensed by June. In the interim, the village has contracted with a licensed operator as needed. Foley said the village began using a second licensed plant operator in 2022, but the employee later found work elsewhere. Following the state notice, the village also had the plant's flow meter calibrated and is updating its operating permit. In other business … The Village Board held its annual reorganization meeting. Foley, trustees Andrew Hall and Tony Bardes, and village justice Luke Hilpert, each of whom was elected in November, were sworn in. In addition, the board approved appointments to various boards and staff positions. The Poughkeepsie Journal was named the official newspaper for legal notices, while the Putnam County News & Recorder was dropped. The Highlands Current will continue to be used as an alternative. In most cases, a newspaper must have mostly paid circulation to be an official paper. The mayor was authorized to sign an intermunicipal agreement with Putnam County for the collection and distribution of sales tax. The nine county municipalities will collectively share 1 percent of the sales tax collected by the county, with a minimum of $50,000 annually. "It's a small victory - just the beginning," Foley said. "Now we press for more." An engineering inspection on the work on the pedestrian tunnel was scheduled for Monday (Dec. 15). Foley clarified why two crews have been working on trees in the village. Brothers Tree Service has been removing dead trees on village property, and Wright Tree Service is trimming trees near power lines for Central Hudson. The Cold Spring Police Department responded to 115 calls in November, including 27 assists to other agencies, nine traffic stops, eight motor vehicle accidents, eight alarms, eight assists to members of the public, two persons in crisis, two disputes and single calls for a domestic incident, fraud, harassment, lost property, menacing, noise and a missing adult. The Cold Spring Fire Co. answered 13 calls in November, including seven activated alarms, a confirmed carbon monoxide incident, two motor vehicle crashes with injuries and single calls for a mountain rescue,...

Episode overview: Andrew Hall faces a unique challenge: building profitable telecommunications infrastructure across one of Africa's largest countries with one of its smallest populations. As managing director of Paratus Namibia, Hall oversees operations spanning vast distances where traditional business models struggle to pencil out. Andile Masuku invites Hall to share on the realities of building networks where "you'll see three fibres running next to the road" instead of shared infrastructure, why COVID accelerated their consumer business, and how recent oil discoveries are reshaping Namibia's economic landscape. Key insights: - On geographic challenges: Namibia's vast distances and sparse population create unique infrastructure economics where covering remote areas requires careful return-on-investment calculations across extended payback periods. - On competitive landscape: Operating alongside two state-owned enterprises creates complex market dynamics where regulatory considerations and different organisational mandates influence infrastructure deployment strategies. - On infrastructure sharing: Despite logical benefits, competitive dynamics often result in duplicated infrastructure: "three towers standing next to each other" rather than collaborative deployment approaches. - On consumer versus enterprise: Traditional enterprise focus (75% of business) provided stability, but consumer growth since 2016 now drives expansion, particularly accelerated during COVID-19 periods. - On technology transitions: Moving from WiMAX limitations (4-10 Mbps) to fibre required strategic timing; balancing asset sweating against customer retention as bandwidth demands increased around 2018. Notable moments: 1. Hall's description of infrastructure redundancy: "If you drive down the road, you'll see three fibres running next to the road. If you're driving from one town to the other, you'll see two or three towers standing next to each other" 2. The COVID-19 catalyst: Consumer business performed "very, very well" as people became "100% reliant, work-wise, education-wise, entertainment-wise on connectivity" 3. Recent oil discoveries creating positive economic outlook with increased foreign investment interest and improved business confidence The development question: Hall addresses the expectation that telecoms should "unlock growth economically for an entire nation" by emphasising education as the foundation. Paratus's corporate social responsibility focuses on educational sector connectivity because "for children to have access to the internet, it makes the world a lot smaller." His perspective reflects broader African infrastructure challenges: balancing commercial sustainability with development impact, managing investor expectations whilst serving diverse stakeholder needs, and building institutional capacity in environments with limited technical specialisation. "I think access to the internet plays a crucial role. And I think it starts at grass root level in the form of education... for children to have access to the internet, it makes the world a lot smaller." Image credit: Paratus Namibia

We also discuss how to avoid, prevent, and respond to such governance attacks -- highlighting key differences between on-chain/ token-based/ digital voting systems vs. physical-world political systems around the world. What happens when you have activity from actors that the majority doesn't necessarily agree with? with @NoahRFeldman, @ahall_research, @rhhackettWelcome to web3 with a16z. I'm Robert Hackett and today we have a special episode about governance in many forms — from nation states to corporate boards to internet services and beyond. Our special guests are Noah Feldman, constitutional law scholar at Harvard who also architected the Meta oversight board (among many other things); he is also the author of several books. And our other special guest is Andy Hall, professor of political science at Stanford who is an advisor of a16z crypto research — and who also co-authored several papers and posts about web3 as a laboratory for designing and testing new political systems, including new work we'll link to in the shownotes. Our hallway style conversation covers technologies and approaches to governance, from constitutions to crypto/ blockchains and DAOs. As such we also discuss content moderation and community standards; best practices for citizens assemblies; courts vs. legislatures; and much more where governance comes up. Throughout, we reference the history and evolution of democracy — from Ancient Greece to the present day — as well as examples of governance from big companies like Meta, to startups like Anthropic.Resources for references in this episode:On the U.S. Supreme Court case NetChoice, LLC v.
