Erin Stiles on Mormon encounters with the spirit world

Erin Stiles is the author of The Devil Sat on My Bed: Encounters with the Spirit World in Mormon Utah. As the back cover describes: "In the mountains of beautiful, bucolic northern Utah, many Latter-day Saints (Mormons) are visited by spirits. Local folklore is filled with stories of uncanny encounters of all kinds, and Latter-day Saint scripture and prophetic teachings emphasize the reality and the importance of the spirit world. Spirit encounters are common in this community. People report visits from the benevolent spirits of kin offering aid and also from evil spirits who tempt and harass. Combining folklore research with ethnography, the book examines many types of spirit encounters and shows that such experiences must be understood as particularly Latter-day Saint phenomena. "Spirit encounters take place within a larger cultural and religious framework that emphasizes the important relationships between living and non-living beings. For Mormons in northern Utah, spirit lore and experiences are interpreted and understood with reference to Latter-day Saint cosmology and particularly Mormon conceptions of the nature of the person, the spirit, and the family, and the nature of righteousness, evil, and spiritual power. The book also explores how people in Utah differentiate between "Mormon culture," the institutional church, and how they understand the "true" meaning of the religion, which has relevance far beyond understanding of people's relationship to the spirit realm and spirit power, and speaks to key issues of concern―and polarization―among Latter-day Saints today." Erin E. Stiles is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her primary interests are in the anthropology of religion and law, and she has worked in East Africa and in the western United States. She has conducted extensive ethnographic research on the everyday workings of Islamic courts in Zanzibar, Tanzania, with a particular focus on marital disputes. Her more recent work focuses on Latter-day Saint experiences of the spirit realm in northern Utah, where she grew up. February 7, 2022 (Season 4, Episode 4: 67 minutes long), click here for the Utah Department of Culture & Community Engagement's fuller version with complete show notes, for this Speak Your Piece episode.American historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's influential 2017 book A House Full of Females: Plural Marriage and Women's Rights in Early Mormonism,1835-1870 (Vintage Books, New York), is the focus of this part-conversation, part seminar discussion, between pubic historians Dr. Cassandra Clark and Brad Westwood. The purposes for this discussion: (a) offer an exchange of ideas regarding Ulrich's book; (b) highlight the author's thesis and arguments or at least a selection of Ulrich's arguments; and (c) draw out important through-lines not often understood by the general public concerning 19th century Mormon women's history. All of this to understand better Utah's history. This is the first episode in a series on Utah women's history where the Utah Division of State History's public historian Dr. Cassandra Clark, discusses important books and articles on Women's history in Utah.  Topics discussed in this episode include: Clark's take on Ulrich's thesis and arguments; 19th century Mormon/Utah womens' medical activities–how spiritual, medical and healing knowledge were largely treated together; a more complex story regarding the Mormon priesthood (women's actors included); women laying the foundation for their church's global successes; how women's activities and networks supported proselytizing; how plural households and extended communities of women functioned as incubators for female activism (religious and political); and how the Utah-Mormon woman's story fits into the larger 19th c. American story.  Topics discussed, continued: How and why Mormon women worked differently within separate gender spheres; womens' writing, editing and publishing; how Utah women's large “Indignation Meetings” (1870s to 1890s) offered public support of plural marriage and attempted to defend the practice against broad national anti-polgyamy sentiments; why and how Utah women were prepared to interact in a broader American Suffrage Movement; how the future of Utah's history requires uncovering or discovering women's voices from traditional and non-traditional records; a more accurate story regarding the mid-1860s official return of the Female Relief Society organization; and finally, how Ulrich's book encourages historians to uncover more about the broader Utah women's experience beyond Mormonism.   Pulitzer prize winning Dr. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich (Harvard University) specializes in early American history and history of women. In the 1970s Ulrich coined the oft quoted line “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”  To read more see the American Historical Association Laurel Thatcher Ulrich Biography.Dr. Cassandra Clark (University of Utah, 2020) has been since November 2021, a public historian and coordinator for the State of Utah's Women's History Initiative. It's not really the most direct route to comedy success: grow up in conservative Mormon Utah, be closeted about your sexuality even to yourself, try to live up to what is expected of you, ditch it all for show biz, come out of the closet, and then make it big. But we know it's worked for at least one person: Bridger Winegar. The host of the I Said No Gifts podcasts walks us through his effort to figure out who he was, which included a long stretch of figuring he'd have to keep his homosexuality shielded for the rest of his life. Until recently, America was an outlier: despite rising affluence, its birthrate remained high, unlike in other countries where more riches have brought fewer children. That's no longer the case today. America is now in demographic decline. Writing in National Review, the political economist and demographer Nicholas Eberstadt observes that  U.S. fertility levels have never before fallen as low as they are today. In 2019—before the coronavirus pandemic—America's total fertility rate (TFR—a measure of births per woman per lifetime) was 1.71, roughly 18 percent lower than the roughly 2.1 births per woman required for long-term population stability. By then, U.S. fertility levels were so low that even Mormon Utah had gone sub-replacement. And U.S. fertility levels were even lower in 2020. With a TFR of 1.64, America was well over 20 percent below replacement. Eberstadt goes on to note that there's reason to believe that the U.S. fertility rate may drop even further in the coming years. He joins this week's podcast to discuss why this is happening, what it means for American society, whether it can be reversed, and, if it can't, how America can cope with it. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

In the 1940s, Trappist monks looked to create new monasteries in unlikely places, places not dominated by Catholics. They found just such a spot in a high mountain valley in Mormon Utah. For 70 years, Holy Trinity Abbey in the scenic Ogden Valley served as a religious refuge, where monks pondered and prayed, worked and worshipped, lived and died. For a young Michael O'Brien, torn by his parents' recent divorce, however, the monastery and his family's frequent trips up “Abbey Road” offered a more personal connection as the monks provided spiritual fathering, committed counseling, timely mentoring, religious role modeling and paths to peace. A now-grown O'Brien, a Catholic who works as an attorney in Salt Lake City and often represents The Salt Lake Tribune in legal matters, captures all that and more in his soon-to-be-released memoir, “Monastery Mornings: My Unusual Boyhood Among the Saints and Monks.”

Hello and welcome back to the campfire! Today we have the honor of having Dr. David Lancy join us for a conversation, and it is one filled with many 'golden nuggets'. David is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.  He began college teaching at Cuttington College in the interior of Liberia in 1968 and subsequently taught at a Community College and at three universities.  Dr. Lancy has authored 5 books and his current research interests center on the anthropology of childhood. He has done fieldwork with children as the focus for extended periods in Liberia, Papua New Guinea and Mormon Utah; for shorter periods in Trinidad (Fullbright Fellow), Sweden (Fullbright Fellow), Uganda, Madagascar, and in urban schools in the U.S. We discuss childhood in the indigenous cultures  versus the WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) society. David points out that in the village, youth have great autonomy and learning bouts are self-initiated rather than teacher or caretaker initiated. Learning is woven into the flow of daily life versus being encapsulated in formal lessons. So grab a seat by the fire  as we travel to Utah to speak to him about the lost art of self education and the anthropology of childhood learning! If you like what you hear and have enjoyed our show, please show your appreciation by subscribing to our Podcast and leaving us a review on your Podcast App of choice. We would love to hear from you so please email us with any comments or questions you have.Visit us and all of our content, including our blog, at www.thehomeschoolprojectpodcast.comAs always, let's Light A Fire They Can't Put OutThank you for listening!Show NotesYou can find all of David's work at his website: David F. Phil (Phil Varney that is) was raised as a Mormon in Utah in a very Mormon-heavy community.  However, he has since left the Mormon church and for the past year and a half or so has found a brand new lease of life in Prague, a city in which, it's fair to say, the Mormon influence isn't quite as strong as where he grew up (Joseph Smith famously couldn't stand Pilsner-style beer...probably).  He discussed what it was like to leave the Mormon religion he grew up in and why he did so, as well as plenty of other interesting topics, such as how Americans are perceived these days by Europeans, how to spot American tourists in Prague, how a drunken group of British lads in Prague inadvertently helped him fulfil a lifelong goal (or fantasy - you decide) and, most importantly, who his top 3 Phils of all time are. This wasn't easy growing up in Mormon Utah but she ended up educating her classmates about their bodies and sexuality within a culture that attaches a great deal of shame to female bodies and development, including sexuality and pleasure.
