In this Season 3 opener of "Stories That Stick," Laura is joined by educator, author, and founder of Your Natural Learner and Bridge Academy, Leah McDermott, for a conversation about courage and child-led learning. Leah has spent years helping families and educators break free from rigid, traditional models so children can learn in ways that honor who they are. In this episode, they explore the heart of unschooling, natural literacy development, and what it means to truly trust children's learning without checklists, timelines, or pressure. Highlights: Redefining Learning Beyond School: Leah breaks down the most common misconceptions about unschooling and explains why it isn't anti-school. You'll hear how removing children from rigid structures opens the door to deeper curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and authentic engagement with the world. Natural Literacy as Expression, Not a Timeline: We discuss why pushing reading too early can backfire and how literacy develops through language, connection, and real-world context. Leah explains what natural literacy looks like day-to-day and why trusting a child's brain development leads to stronger, more confident readers in the long run. Doing the Adult Work: A major theme in this episode is unlearning. Leah and Laura talk about the internal work adults must do from examining fears, to undoing their own educational conditioning, all while learning to trust the process. Navigating Fear, Pressure, and the Unknown: What if you let go of timelines? What if your child learns differently than you did? Leah offers grounded, compassionate advice for navigating the fear and societal pressure that often arise when you choose a path outside the norm. If you've ever wondered what learning might look like without the pressure, the power struggles, or the constant comparison, this episode will feel like a breath of fresh air. Leah's insights offer a vision of education rooted in connection, curiosity, and trust—one that prepares children for a rapidly changing world by honoring who they are today. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
When Sara's four-year-old son started asking permission to use art supplies he'd always freely accessed before, she knew something had shifted. After a year in a (loving, high-quality!) preschool, her previously autonomous child was suddenly seeking approval for things that had never required it. Sara had never required this at home, and in fact it worried her because it didn't fit with her values to treat her son as a whole person. If this shift was happening so obviously at home, what other changes might be occurring that she couldn't see yet - changes that might not align with what mattered most to her family? Sara wished she could homeschool, but knew it wasn't in the cards. Seeing the shift in her son showed her that once her son started formal school, she was going to be the one who helped him to stay connected to learning that wasn't just based on rote memorization. But how would she do this, when she wasn't a teacher? In this conversation, Sara shares how she learned to step back from teaching and instead scaffold her son's innate curiosity about everything from astronauts to construction vehicles. As an architect and immigrant parent navigating cultural pressures around achievement, Sara's story reveals how supporting your child's interests rather than directing their learning can transform both your relationship and their confidence as a learner. Whether you're working full-time, in school, homeschooling, or simply wondering how to nurture your child's curiosity without taking over, Sara's practical examples show that interest-based learning doesn't have to add a lot of work to busy family life. It becomes an organic part of how you connect and explore the world together. Questions this episode will answer What does interest-based learning look like in real family life? How can parents support learning without taking over their child's exploration? What is scaffolding in education and how do you do it effectively? How do you identify and follow your child's genuine interests? What are learning explorations and how do they differ from traditional teaching? How can working parents implement interest-led learning with limited time? What role should documentation play in supporting children's learning? How do you overcome perfectionism when supporting your child's education? What does "following the child" mean in practice? How can parents build their child's creative problem-solving skills? What you'll learn in this episode You'll discover practical strategies for supporting your child's innate curiosity without turning into the teacher. Sara shares specific examples of learning explorations around space and construction vehicles that show how to scaffold learning by asking questions instead of providing answers. You'll learn to recognize when your child is truly engaged versus when you've taken over their exploration. The episode reveals how small shifts in language - things like pausing and saying: "Hmmm…I wonder?" instead of immediately explaining - can transform everyday moments into meaningful learning opportunities. This simple shift transitions the responsibility for learning from you back to your child, and invites them to consider how their current question fits with what they already know. It also establishes a habit of what we do when we have questions: we don't simply jump to Google or ChatGPT; we first work to understand whether we might actually already have the answer (or something close to it) ourselves. This protects our kids against the stupidification that research warns us is happening now that we can turn to AI to answer our every question. Sara's journey from perfectionist parent (her parents' motto when she was a child: "Be The Best!") to

Much of modern work is defined by routine, efficiency targets, and the need to appear productive. But how much of it is actually necessary? Dennis Nørmark, Danish anthropologist, author, and speaker, argues that a significant part of today's work culture is built on pseudo-work—tasks that maintain appearances rather than create real value. As the co-author of Pseudo-Work: How We Ended Up Being Busy Doing Nothing, he examines why unnecessary work persists and how it shapes our perception of productivity. In I Wish My Boss Was a Chief, he applies leadership lessons from indigenous cultures to modern management, questioning whether our current systems are as effective as we assume. This conversation explores how unfreedom has become a feature of work and society, limiting personal agency and reinforcing structures of control. Predictions from a century ago suggested that technological progress would reduce working hours, yet most people today work as much as ever. Why has this happened? How do schools, workplaces, and governments encourage dependence rather than autonomy? And what can be done to reclaim control over our time and choices?Key TopicsWhat pseudo-work is and why it persistsHow bureaucracy and control shape modern work cultureThe shift from work as necessity to work as identityWhy predictions of reduced working hours never materializedHow education reinforces compliance rather than independenceRethinking work, freedom, and personal agencyDennis Nørmark challenges assumptions about work and productivity, raising questions about what it means to contribute meaningfully in a system that values busyness over results.
Learning is a natural function of the brain. As teachers, our job is to facilitate that natural function. In today's episode, we dive into the research around how brains perform learning and the ideal conditions for optimal learning. We dig into Renata and Geoffrey Caine's research on the topic, focusing on three key areas: orchestrated immersion, relaxed alertness, and active processing. Today's podcast features Flynn Disney. Flynn is a parkour athlete and human performance coach known for integrating mind, body, and environment in movement training. Flynn combines his history as an athlete with an intensive study of human psychology and experience training animals to provide a unique and insightful perspective on training. All too often, training is thought of on the level of machine-like qualities. Sets, reps, drills, and coaching cues. Rarely do we consider those processes by which children and animals learn, or how the consideration of the total human can change the process by which we coach. Much of this also involves looking at what makes animals and humans both similar and unique, in their movement strength, and abilities. On today's show, Flynn digs into the key differences between animals and humans from a perspective of reflexes and internal wiring, the role of reflexes in training, and examples in plyometric, running, and dynamic “spinal-engine” activities (and the value of “the worm” breakdance move, from an athletic perspective). He talks about the role of attentional networks, and training implications, the impact of risk on our reflex loops in training, and more. Based in London, his mastery of parkour fundamentals, coupled with a deep understanding of biomechanics, has made him a sought-after coach in the movement training community. As a coach, Flynn emphasizes an approach the integrates mind and body, helping athletes of all levels break through physical and psychological barriers. Flynn also contributes to the sport through workshops and content that promote parkour as a tool for developing adaptable and well-rounded athletes.
This is a special episode that was recorded three years ago and that was on my Psychospiritual Podcast, about Aware Parenting and homeschooling. If you know Chiara Rossetti and haven't heard the news yet, I invite you to pause and have a friend close before reading more..... ...... ...... ...... Chiara is no longer with us. If you knew her, I'm sending so much love to you, however you're feeling now. Chiara was an Aware Parenting instructor who lived and breathed Aware Parenting. She was an attachment play genius. I shared about her, the profound effect she had on the Aware Parenting community, and my friendship with her on my social media recently. She and her children had the most amazing Aware Parenting and natural learning journey. She supported so many parents with Aware Parenting and attachment play in particular. She supported so many Aware Parenting instructors. We had talked for years about creating an attachment play book some day, and had reconnected with that again recently. I am so deeply sad and will miss her so much. I felt so called to share this episode with you, where she shares about how she came across Aware Parenting (when her son was waking up every 45 minutes), and then talked about her journey with Aware Parenting and Natural Learning (this was part of a series of podcasts on AwP and homeschooling). She also shared about sleep, and teens. So much of what she said is so poignant. If you want to watch the FB live we did on attachment play together that we mention at the end of the episode, you can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/100063796862144/videos/246519440294072 So much love to you. xoxoxo

Today's podcast features Paul Cater, a seasoned strength coach with extensive experience in both professional and private realms. Beginning his journey in collegiate football at UC Davis, Paul later ventured into international professional rugby with the London Wasps for seven years. Following his rugby career, he spent a decade innovating strength and conditioning systems in professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels. With a research focus on performance and injury reduction in Seville, Spain, Paul now optimizes training methods for the tactical community and is designing "The Lab Monterey," a premier 'smart gym' in the USA. While training is often regarded as both an art and a science, the majority of time and resources are allocated to the scientific aspects, leaving the artistic elements overlooked. The art of training extends beyond communication with athletes, delving into the intuitive process of session unfolding and the natural processes of learning, movement, and community engagement. In today's podcast, Paul explores the alignment of performance with natural learning, emphasizing challenge and mimicry over verbal statements and rote recital of patterns. He details how to create an environment that breathes life into training sessions, fostering engagement, enhanced learning, and improved results. The discussion also covers the role of science in the context of "smart gyms" and how technology can liberate coach resources for more creative investments. In a rapidly evolving world, this podcast is a landmark exploration of understanding athletes and fostering a meaningful coaching process. In this episode, I'm chatting with Julie Walter from Ontario, Canada. Julie has three children who are 9, 11 and 13 and have never been to school. As a former teacher, Julie talks about how impacted she was by the differences between the resistant nature of learning in a classroom and the kind of natural learning she was seeing unfolding happily at home. We talk about what it means to accompany our children in this journey, and why our relationships with our children are at the heart of this. And, we talk about how we can stay trusting during the inevitable ebbs and flows and quiet moments, and how deep our own deschooling journeys often need to go. Welcome back to a new episode where I have a conversation with Leah McDermott. Leah is an unschooling advocate and mother of three. After over a decade spent in the world of education, two Masters of Education degrees, and multiple teaching certifications, Leah slowly began to realize that the way we are teaching our children in public schools went against everything that we knew to be true about learning acquisition and child development. Her passion for helping other children and families led to her developing a child-led learning curriculum, creating a supportive space online for parents, and opening Bridge Academy - a private umbrella school for homeschoolers, Leah continues her life's work of encouraging adults to unlearn what they've always believed to be true as they lean fully into trusting their children as natural, capable learners. Leah currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Brian, their three boys, and a collection of pets. In this episode we have a powerful conversation about some of the damaging long-term effects of schooling and the pressure that children often face at school. We share many of the benefits we have seen of supporting children to learn in their own way, in their own timing, relaxed and self-connected at home. We talk about cultivating trust in our children and dealing with the judgements and questions of others so that we can truly enjoy facilitating our children's learning at home. If you want to learn more about Leah's work, please follow her on social media at Your Natural Learner or her website https://www.bridgeacademy.us/. If you want to learn more about Natural Learning from me, I have a series of articles on my website here https://awareparenting.com.au/articles/?_select_a_category=homeschoolingandnaturallearning. I also offer workshops on Natural Learning here https://awareparenting.com.au/my-courses/parenting-workshops/ and run an online natural learning and aware parenting community together with Marion Rose https://awareparenting.com.au/parenting-coaching/community/. We also have a podcast series together The Aware Parenting and Natural Learning Podcast, that you can find on all podcast platforms.
We are so happy to be back with a new episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast for the end of the year. We talk about the many gifts for our children and ourselves of choosing these ways of raising them, as we are both now at the end of the "schooling" process. The gifts include our children's self-connection, their freedom from the painful and enduring beliefs about ourselves that are set up in school through cultural conditioning, their freedom from coercion and control and the deep, mutual, unconditional love that is the defining feature of our relationships, throughout childhood and beyond. We share some recent examples of joyful experiences we have had with our children and share some of why we have both loved this journey so much. In this episode, we talk about meeting needs of both parents and children when practicing Aware Parenting and Natural Learning. We share about the effects of the culture on needs, and the creative ways we might need to utilise to support everyone in the family getting their needs met. We discuss the needs inventory from Nonviolent Communication (which you can find at www.cnvc.org) and how helpful it is in identifying needs, valuing needs and being willing for our needs to be met. We include the process that we can go through from not knowing that we have needs to reclaiming the beauty of our needs and having willingness for our needs to be met. We talk about specific ways that we found helpful for getting our needs met as mothers whilst also supporting our children to have their needs met too. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss school trauma again. We talk about some of the visible and some of the invisible traumas that children experience at school, as well as the impact of the accumulated mini and major traumas that are part of each school day. We discuss how children often need to go into a dissociation nervous system response at school and how this then makes it difficult for many of us to remember and really understand just how traumatic school was or to see the conditioning, denial or social acceptance that school is fine. We talk about the long-term impact on us as adults of these traumas and the effect on our psychological and physical health of being in a chronic stressed state. We share about the adultism that is such a strong part of our culture, where adults get to decide and power-over children and where children's voice, opinions, needs and desires are overlooked and not honoured. Hey Tribe, Thank you for being here again!!! In today's episode we had the inspirational, Jane Evans on with us. Jane is a mother, a gardener, hiker, music teacher, advocate of natural learning and author of a book called 'Natural Learning: the unschooling Life'. In this episode we go into detail of how she raised her children in the most beautiful and natural way possible in our opinion. Jane has 3 successful grown children that unschooled their whole life. Jane shared with us the ups and downs and ins and outs of what it is to be a natural learner and if unschooling/natural learning is right for you and your family. Before having children herself, Jane was a school teacher and she shared with us how she knew she just didn't want to raise them in the type of environment that could possibly stifle who they naturally and truly were. Jane now tours around advocating the unschooling life, helping families understand what it is to be a natural learner and how it really is a lifestyle. Jane, thank you so much for coming on the podcast with us. We really are inspired by you and what you do! Keep on spreading the good word! The paradigm is shifting and people are taking their power back as parents and realizing they have what it takes to support their kids because of people like you doing what you're doing! Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss the challenges of juggling everything in life by ourselves when we are pratising Aware Parenting and Natural Learning. We share how normal it is to find it really difficult to do work, to support our children's learning and to meet all the other demands of life, and to do so in isolation in our nuclear families in this culture. We share many of the powerful things that we have found to support ourselves to make it possible to thrive in our families, including: deconditioning ourselves, choosing to put down some balls, freeing ourselves from coercion and guilt and “shoulds”, organising our work around the other needs and priorities of our lives, reaching out for emotional and practical support and community from others on this path, and not comparing ourselves and our families to others. We share the strategies that we have found most helpful on this journey. Lisa is joined by Dr. Judy Morgan who talks with Lisa about her book, From Needles to Natural: Learning Holistic Pet Healing. Lisa asks Dr. Judy Morgan about her childhood experiences with animals, her change from allopathic veterinary medicine to holistic medicine, and lots of examples of dogs in her life and her patients lives that she healed with holistic medicine. Book description:After using traditional Western veterinary medicine to treat her animal patients for many years, Dr. Judy Morgan discovered a better way to help them live longer, healthier lives. In From Needles to Natural, she shares her journey from traditional to holistic veterinary medicine and helps pet owners understand the differences between good advertising and good health for their animal friends. With more than thirty years of experience as a practicing veterinarian, Morgan blends her personal story as a lifelong animal lover with this collection of professional opinions about animals and animal care. From Needles to Natural covers a variety of topics including pet nutrition and food therapy, pet food labels, veterinary chiropractic care, acupuncture, and understanding the array of vaccines and medications. Morgan, who has produced a full webinar series on YouTube, discusses alternative and supplemental treatments for pet illnesses. While narrating heartwarming tales of the pets she's treated, Morgan dispels the myths about effective pet care and teaches pet owners the benefits of feeding and treating an animal holistically.
Why is it important to learn and grow up with the children? Why is it necessary to let them grow naturally? working on concepts rather than their marks; Enriching their reading by guiding them in the right direction..creating curiosity about maths, languages, science and helping parents to do it all.. can it all happen in one place? ...Yes, it happens!! In this episode of The Aware Parenting and Natural Learning Podcast, we talk about the challenges we've experienced practicing the combination of these two philosophies, and the challenges we've observed mentees and friends going through. Most of all, we offer deep compassion to you in any challenges you might be experiencing, and we offer bigger context reasons why challenges are so normal and natural. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss number 11 of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning, which is as follows: Children learn best when they have a warm, supportive relationship with their parents and teachers. The learning process is enhanced when parents and teachers: - show acceptance and love while giving children good quality attention - Use encouragement rather than praise, rewards or criticism - Have age-appropriate expectations (neither too high not too low) - Use a non-punitive approach to discipline - Encourage children to ask questions and be independent thinkers - Accept children's painful emotions and allow them to cry. We talk about the failings of our school systems and the impact of learning in environments that do not support our children in these ways. As always, we invite deep self-compassion for everyone listening! A truly insightful and wonderful episode of The Unveil Podcast today sees Victoria Fenton interview the powerhouse couple that is Josette and Ba Luvmour. This episode is a deep teaching about the Luvmour's wisdom and model: Natural Learning Relationships. Josette and Ba Luvmour are educators who started several holistic education schools, a holistic learning center for families and children, and many whole-family immersion programs (in both California and Oregon). They each are Faculty at Antioch University, in the Individualized Master of Arts (IMA) program in the School of Education (SOE). Together, Josette and Ba co-created and developed Natural Learning Relationships, a holistic understanding of child development that supports optimal well-being in children and families. Natural Learning Relationships was the basis and philosophical foundation of the schools, learning center, and programs they founded as well as in their published work of six print books, five eBooks, and magazine and journal articles. They produced and hosted the popular podcast series, Meetings with Remarkable Educators. Teachers of children and parents, they are also teachers of other teachers (undergrad and graduate master's students), many of whom went on to start their own schools in the USA and Canada using Natural Learning Relationships child development and holistic approaches in their teaching practice. They founded two non-profit organizations dedicated to awakening the greatness in humanity. Josette and Ba live, work, and play together in Portland, Oregon in an extended family with their grandchildren and son-in-law. They are continually inspired by all those who learn with children and grow together to access greater self-knowledge, well-being, and ultimately wisdom. Listen to this episode as Victoria learns all about: Natural Learning Relationships Fields of wisdom The precise nourishment and receptivity for each age stage How to be with children in different fields of wisdom How being with children as they naturally evolve in a way that supports your own evolution - as an adult How families can do this work together to repattern their relationships This is an amazingly instructive episode, with Josette and Ba teaching Victoria about the specifics of their models. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss number 9 of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning, which is as follows: Stress and trauma can interfere with the learning process by causing confusion, anxiety, grief, anger, and difficulty concentrating. The learning process is enhanced when children are allowed to release painful emotions through the natural healing mechanisms of play, laughter, and crying. In the episode, we talk about sources of stress and trauma in traditional school environments, the hyperarousal or dissociation that can occur as a result, and the effect that has on a child's openness and spaciousness for learning. We share about our own experiences as children as well as what we have experienced with our own children. As always, we invite deep self-compassion for everyone listening! Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss number 9 of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning, about screens and learning. We start by inviting people to bring compassion to this tricky aspect of parenting and learning and to put down any judgement, shame or guilt about screens. We acknowledge how difficult it is to parent in our nuclear families without the support we are designed to need and how screens can often make parenting easier. We discuss the many beneficial ways that screens impact our lives and our children's lives and discuss how we have navigated screen use to meet everyone's needs. We offer reassurance about how to stay connected and trusting around screens and how to offer loving limits when screens become a control pattern for our children. We share the importance of getting support and listening for ourselves as we find ways to manage these enticing instruments in a way that suits our unique individual families. Whether your children are at school or not, this episode will support you to bring more compassion and clarity around screens to yourself and your children. Welcome to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss another of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning. We talk about how “earlier is not necessarily better. Each child develops at his or her own rate”. We share how we have learnt to trust our children's own unique timing with their learning and how natural learning and Aware Parenting have supported us to treat our children with respect and unconditional love. We talk about the damage of exams and gradings and how schools set our children up for comparison and competition in a way that is stressful and detrimental to their learning. Welcome to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss another of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning. We talk about creating rich learning environments for our children at home. We discuss the often-overwhelming sensory impacts of school and how that can push our children into chronic hyperarousal or dissociation states, which impacts their capacity to learn. We share how our children have thrived in learning at home in a very relaxed, inspiring and nourishing sensory environment, day after day. We share about the primal human needs for comfort, beauty, peaceful space, choice and being in environments that are attuned to the individual needs of each child. In this episode, we return to Aletha Solter's Aware Parenting Principles of Learning article, particularly focussing on play, and how children learn through play. We discuss how play is devalued in this culture and how much we value it in Aware Parenting and Natural Learning, seeing it as the primary mode of learning for a child's first decade. We share our own experiences of supporting our children with an environment rich with play, and explore the pain many children experience when faced with long hours sitting at desks being given verbal instruction. We also have a wonderful conversation about the learning power of conversation! We share the long and ongoing process we have been through to decondition and deschool ourselves in order to be able to trust our children with learning. The conversation includes a description of Natural Learning and how these two philosophies complement each others, such as having a deep trust in a child's learning and development, honouring each child's differences, and following a child's interests. Also discussed is the history of schooling and the bigger cultural picture. You can find out about Joss' courses, offerings and sessions at www.awareparenting.com.au

Today, I'm chatting with Jane Evans from New Zealand. Jane has three adult children, who are now 23, 21 and 18. We talk about how important it is to trust our children and the choices they make, and how learning can just take so many forms. And, we reflect on how vastly different each person's path will be if it comes from their own deep knowing. As always we dip into the topic of tending ourselves too, and the importance of investing time in our own happiness, not just to strengthen our capacities, but also because whether we like it or not, we are always an example for our children. Jane has recently written a book about her family's unschooling journey, called Natural Learning. The Unschooling Life, and we also talk about what motivated her to share her family's story. What would they like to see and do in their homeschool life? In their daily life? What would they like to create? To play? What would they like to Build? Adventures Across the 5 Mountains of Human Development: Physical | Mental | Emotional | Intuitional | Spiritual When we think about traditional educational paradigms, we typically don't think about the importance of providing children with an environment in which they feel a strong sense of belonging, connection, and acknowledgment. What if there was a different way of looking at education? What if we as adults could benefit from relationship-based and holistic education of our youths? In this episode, we discuss the development of children, relationship-based education, and the evolution of consciousness with Dr. Josette Luvmour. Josette Luvmour, PhD, specializes in the fields of childhood development and Natural Learning Relationships, consciousness of the developing child, transformational learning, how adult and child grow together, relationship-based education and holistic education, teacher training, and professional development programs.
