Daily Dose of Hope August 28, 2024 Day 4 of Week 22   Scripture:  I Kings 3; 2 Chronicles 1; Psalm 42; Romans 8   Welcome, everyone, once again to the Daily Dose of Hope, the podcast and devotional that complements the daily Bible reading for New Hope Church in Brandon, Florida.  Today is Wednesday so it's Recharge night!  If you are local, I hope you will come out for worship and small community tonight at 6:30pm.  We start in the Garage, on the Moon Ave. side of campus.   Our Scripture for today begins in I Kings 3.  It seems that Solomon starts his reign out fairly well.  Solomon was following God's laws, making the appropriate sacrifices, and walking with the Lord.  Then, Solomon, recognizing his own immaturity and lack of experience, asks God for a discerning, obedient heart so that he can administer wisdom in his kingdom.  This pleases God because Solomon doesn't ask for selfish favors, but rather the ability to help other people.  In response, God grants wisdom, wealth, and fame to Solomon.  The only caveat to all this is that Solomon continues to obey God's commands.     In the last part of this chapter, we get a glimpse into Solomon's new wisdom being tested.  It's a very famous story so be sure to read through it if you didn't already.  As Solomon begins to rule, he is also very prolific in his wisdom writings, penning Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon.    2 Chronicles 1 is basically the same story from a different perspective.  Solomon asks for wisdom and God grants it.  What's interesting to me in this chapter is the many words used to describe Solomon's wealth.  There is less personal narrative.  The chronicler wants us to know that Solomon's wealth was unparalleled at the time.  As we have grown accustomed to in the Chronicles, there are many lists that describe Solomon's strength and treasures.    I want us to take note in both of these chapters how well Solomon is starting his reign.  He truly wants to walk closely with the Lord.  Things will change later so I want us to take all of this in.   Psalm 42 was written by the sons of Korah.  They were Levites, probably musicians, so I want you to imagine this psalm being sung.  The psalm depicts a desperation for God.  As the deer pants for water, so my soul pants for God.  We don't know exactly what the desperation stems from; it's possible that they are seeking to worship God in the temple in Jerusalem.  The bottom line is that they seek God's presence with a sense of urgency and desperation.    Have you ever been there?  Have you had times in your life in which you seek God with this kind of despair?  Think about those times.  How did God respond to your need? Our New Testament passage for today is Romans 8.  There is so much substance in this one chapter.  Overall, Paul is telling us to live by the Spirit and he is encouraging us because no matter what, God's love prevails.  I'm going to touch on a few of the main points.    The first part of the chapter details how we need to live according to the Spirit.  Yes, we are human beings, so we have a sinful nature, but that doesn't mean we have to live according to that sinful nature.  Paul says that once we accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit indwells us, meaning the Spirit can guide us, convict us, and direct us.  In fact, we are only living in true freedom if we are allowing the Spirit to guide us.  Being led by the sinful nature is just another form of bondage and that leads to death.  When we live by the Spirit, we know that we are children of God, we have the assurance of salvation and new life in Christ.    In the next part of the chapter, Paul focuses on our present sufferings.  Keep in mind, the church at the time was enduring tremendous persecution.  It wasn't easy following Jesus in the Roman world.  But Paul says these sufferings are nothing compared to the future glory that they will experience.  These present hardships will not last.  Eternity with Jesus, on the other hand, will last forever.  He is encouraging them to stay the course, hold on, because it will get so much better.  In fact, he says something quite extraordinary:  All of these difficulties and challenges will actually be used by God in some way to bring him glory, to extend the purposes of his Kingdom.   That doesn't mean they won't be painful or really, really hard, but God won't let anything go to waste.   One part that I just love is when Paul speaks about all creation groaning for all things to be made right again.  Ever since the fall, God has been putting things in place to make things right, to basically reverse the effects of the fall.  Not only do we as human beings look forward to when death, suffering, and pain, are no longer part of our world, but so does all of creation.  I can't help thinking about that line in the praise song, So Will I, when Hillsong sings, “If the rocks cry out in reverence, so will I.”  Y'all, even the rocks are yearning for God to make things right again, once and for all.    Paul also speaks about how the Spirit intercedes for us.  I love this.  When things are really, really bad, when we don't have words or don't have the strength to say the words, we can trust that the Spirit of the living God is interceding for us at the throne of grace with words we can't understand.    Have there been times in your life in which you just didn't have the ability to pray?  Maybe you were incapacitated or so distressed that the words couldn't come out.  I know I've had times in which all I can do is cry out, “Jesus!”  And I know, I trust, that the Holy Spirit understands and is working on my behalf.  How cool is that?  What a mighty God we serve.   But I can't finish this devotional without talking about the last part of the chapter.  Paul gives us this beautiful picture of God's love and how nothing at all can ever separate us from it.  I use this Scripture quite often in funerals, especially when the person has died under difficult circumstances.  I find it so hopeful that if that individual believed in Jesus, that nothing can separate them from God's love.  It very clearly says that death cannot separate from God's love, even difficult, painful deaths like drug overdoses and suicide.    Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Foundations of Amateur Radio
About Australian Callsigns

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2024 8:08

Foundations of Amateur Radio Australia has a long relationship with callsigns. Over time the regulator, today the ACMA, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, has seen fit to introduce different types of callsigns and restrictions associated with those callsigns. The change that made the most waves most recently was the introduction of the so-called F-call. It's a callsign that looks like mine, VK6FLAB. It has a VK prefix for Australia, the number 6 indicating my state, Western Australia, then the letter F, followed by a suffix of three letters. This type of callsign was introduced in 2005. To this day there are plenty of amateurs on-air who don't believe that this is a real callsign, to the point where some refuse to make contact, or worse, make inflammatory statements about getting a real callsign, and that's just the letters, let alone those who think that the callsign denotes a lack of skill or knowledge demanding that the amateur "upgrade" their license to a real one. At the time of introduction, the apparent intent was to indicate that the holder was licensed as a Foundation or beginner. In 2020 this was changed, and existing F-call holders were able to apply for a new callsign if they desired. Some did, many did not. Currently there are 1,385 F-calls active and there are 3,748 Foundation class callsigns in the registry. After this change, you might think that all callsigns in Australia are now either two or three letter suffixes, as-in VK6AA or VK6AAA. Actually, the F-call continues to exist and there are now also two by one calls, VK6A, intended for contesters. A popular idea is that the F-call is for Foundation license class amateurs only. There are currently 10 Standard and 16 Advanced license classed holders with an F-call. There are also two special event callsigns that sport an F-call. With the addition of contest callsigns, new prefixes, VJ and VL, were introduced which brought with it the notion that you could use those new prefixes for your callsign. Currently, only contest callsigns are allocated with VJ and VL prefixes. An often repeated idea is that we're running out of callsigns. Well, there are 1,434,160 possible callsigns if we count each prefix, each state, single, double, triple and F-calls across all prefixes. As it happens, there are at present 15,859 assigned and 53 pending callsigns. If not all, then surely, we're running out of real callsigns. Nope. If we look at the VK prefix alone, less than 10% of available callsigns have been allocated. Okay, we've run out of contest callsigns. Nope. There are 1,040 possible contest callsigns and only 188 allocated. Another popular notion is that we've run out of two-letter callsigns, that is, the suffix has only two letters. Again, no. There are 3,553 allocated out of 6,760, less than 53% has been assigned. Surely, some states appear to have run out of two-letter callsigns. Well, maybe. Theoretically each state has 676 two-letter callsigns but none have all of those allocated. For example, VK3, with 675 allocated two-letter suffixes, is missing VK3NG for no discernible reason. More on the missing ones shortly. It's impossible to use the current register to determine how many amateurs hold more than one two letter callsign. Another notion is that you can have a special event callsign as long as it starts with VI. As it happens there are currently special event callsigns registered with VI, VK and AX prefixes. Just over half of them have any online activity to promote the callsign for their event. You might think that a callsign can only be "Assigned" or "Available". According to the register a callsign can be "Pending", it can also be "Reserved", more on that in a moment, and it can not be in the list at all, "Missing" if you like. Take for example JNW, it's assigned in VK2, it's available in all other states, except VK3 where it simply doesn't exist. This oddity doesn't restrict itself to VK3. Take XCA, available in all states, except VK4. TLC doesn't exist in VK2. Many more examples to go round. And that's not looking at exclusions due to swear words and reserved words like PAN; but SOS is an assigned callsign. Combinations that you think might be unavailable, like QST, are fine, except in VK2 where it doesn't exist. It's thought that reservations are only for repeaters. Nope. Suffixes with GG followed by a letter are reserved for the Girl Guides, those that start with S followed by two letters are reserved for Scouts, those starting with WI are for the Wireless Institute of Australia and those with IY are for the International Year of something. Interestingly there is no reference to repeaters or beacons at all in the callsign register since they fall under the old license regime, rather than the new amateur class. And you thought that the system was getting simpler and cheaper to run. You might think that every state has the same number of callsigns. Ignoring F-calls, VK5 has the most callsigns available and VK3 the least. No doubt this is due to the callsigns that are "Missing" from the register. This likely leaves you with plenty more questions, but next time someone asserts something about callsigns, perhaps it's time to have a think before you spout. Note that this information is based on the ACMA callsign register as I found it on the 29th of June 2024. This started as an exploration of just how many different amateur calls were registered. At the time there were 3,748 Foundation class, 2,079 Standard class and 9,946 Advanced class callsigns assigned or pending. Without knowing how many callsigns each amateur has been assigned, it's impossible to know just how many amateurs those 15,773 callsigns represent. Perhaps it's time for the regulator to start publishing some data on our community, rather than relying on the likes of me to download 1,774 pages of data and two days analysing it. I can tell you that I have been assigned two callsigns, one for day-to-day use and one I use for digital modes and contests, given that WSPR doesn't play nice with VK6FLAB and I really have no desire to give up my call. Before I go, every VK callsign also has an AX equivalent on three days every year, 26 January, 25 April and 17 May and as I said, you can apply for a special event callsign with an AX prefix. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

İsa Peygamber (a.s.) şöyle diyordu: “Halk sizi başkan yaparsa sizler kuyruk olun.” Haccâc b. Ertât (r.âleyh)'in bir sözü: “Beni baş olma arzu ve sevdası öldürdü.” El-Antâkî (r.âleyh)'nin bir sözü: “Başkanlık, riyakârlık arzusunun başı, nefsin sevdalısı, şeytânın göz bebeğidir.” İbrahim b. Edhem (r.âleyh)'in görüşü: “Kuyruk olun başkan olmayın, çünkü kuyruk kurtulur baş kesilir.” Fudayl b. Iyâz (r.âleyh) şöyle diyordu: “Baş olmak isteyen kendisinin mükemmelliğini ortaya koyabilmek için insanların kusur ve ayıplarını diline dolar, huzurunda başkalarının hayırla yâd edilmesinden hoşlanmaz. Riyâset aşığı gerçekten iyi hallerine vedâ etmiştir.” Süfyan es-Sevrî (r.a.)'in bir sözü: “Riyâset makâmını bırakmak ve bir kadını sevmekten vazgeçmek sabır bitkisinin usaresinden (öz suyundan) de acıdır.” (İmâm Şa'rânî, Tenbihü'l-Muğterrin Tercümesi, s.116-117)

Abdullah b. Mübarek (r.âleyh), kölesi satış yaparken Peygamber (s.a.v.)'e salâvat getirirse, o gelirinden yemez ve: “Sen, Peygamber (s.a.v.)'e salâvat getirerek malı övdün, müşteri tavlamak için salâvat getirdin; sakın böyle yapma! Müşteriye malının ucuz olduğunu veya güzel olduğunu söyleme, malı önüne koy, sesini çıkarmadan sat!” diye öğüt verirmiş. Bir keresinde Fudayl b. Iyâz (r.âleyh) çocuklarına ekmek almak için çarşıya çıkar, ekmekçinin ekmeği satarken “Sübhânallâh, Lâ ilâhe illallâh” diye tesbih ve tehlil getirdiğini, Peygamber (s.a.v.)'e salâvat okuduğunu görünce Fudayl (r.âleyh) o adamdan ekmek almaktan vazgeçer, kendisi ve çocukları o gün aç yatarlar. Ertesi gün çarşıya çıktığında sessiz sessiz ekmek satan birini görünce ondan ekmek alır. Kendisine: “Ebû Ali, bu hassasiyet pek basit bir şey!” dediklerinde şöyle mukâbelede bulunur: “Sizlerin, pek basit gördüğünüz bu şeyin, beni cehenneme götüreceğinden endişe duyuyorum.” Yunus b. (İmâm Şa'rânî, Tenbihü'l-Muğterrin Tercümesi, s.305-306) ASHÂB-I KİRÂM (R.A.E.)'İN ABDESTLERİ NASILDI? Hz. Osman (r.a.)'in azatlısı Humrân b. Peygamber (s.a.v.)'in şu hadisini nakletti: “Kim benim abdest aldığım gibi abdest alır da kendisini tamamen Allâh (c.c.)'a vererek iki rekât namaz kılarsa, Allâh onun geçmiş günâhlarını affeder.”

Vehb b. Münebbih (r.âleyh) şöyle diyordu: “Aman şeytâna görünürde düşman olup da gizlice kendisine saygı göstermeyiniz. İsyankâr olarak geceleyene şeytân gelin olarak yaklaşır!” (İmâm Şa'rânî, Tenbihü'l-Muğterrin Tercümesi, s.256-257)

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: One bit of observation can unlock many of optimization - but at what cost?, published by dr s on April 29, 2023 on LessWrong. This question by johnswentworth nerd sniped me, so I ended up thinking a lot about the relationship between information and control over the world in the simplified scenario of a single tape of bits. The question asked how many bits of optimization one could unlock with a single bit of observation; the answer ended up being "arbitrarily many", as proven by a simple example: suppose you have a rule that says that if the first bits of your action Amatch those of your observation O, then the rest of A gets copied to your target value Y; then there's no limit to how many bits you can copy, and the only information you need to leverage is the knowledge of the secret "key". We know this works because this is exactly how locks work in real life too. If I possess someone's bank account password, or the combination to a safe, or the US nuclear codes, then I'm able to produce disproportionate effects to the tiny size of that knowledge, just because I can also rely on the state of the world and its laws being set up in such a way that I can use that knowledge as a pivot to trigger much bigger effects. The thing I wanted to focus on then was those conditions: even given that I know the "password", what else do I need to know about the world at large, and what limits are there on my power to optimize the final state? I decided to focus on the following model: a world string W of N bits, prepared in some initial state W0, with some regions known and some randomized; a discrete map f that determines the evolution of this world, such that W1=f(W0), W2=f(f(W0)) and so on. The map is reversible, such that there exists an inverse Wi−1=f−1(Wi); The focus on the map being reversible is because in the real world the laws of physics are time symmetric too and microscopically should not destroy information. Irreversible computing allows the deletion of information, which reduces the entropy of the system. In a computer embedded in a larger world this can be compensated by creating entropy somewhere else, but if our string has to represent the entire world, then it should preserve information. The world string has several identifiable regions: an action region A, within which we can set up bits arbitrarily in the initial state; an observation region O, which we can't affect but whose contents we know exactly in the initial state; a target region Y, to which we aim at writing certain bits so as to maximize the mutual information I(Y;G) with some goal string G; two fuel regions F0 and F1, at the ends of the string, filled respectively with all 0s and all 1s. We'll see the use for them in a moment. The map f can be defined as a series of instructions. Since we're doing reversible computing, we can use only one universal logic gate, like the Toffoli gate (CCNOT) or the Fredkin gate (CSWAP). These take three bits as arguments, so once we've decided our gate of choice an entire program can be composed simply of triples of addresses of bits, wherein each address will require L=⌈log2(N)⌉ bits, meaning a program's size is 3L bits/instruction. Consider the simplest possible version of a "lock-like" program, which compares b1 and b2, and if they're identical, it swaps b3 and b4 (note that we can't simply copy b3: that would erase information and not be reversible). We will also need two "fuel" bits f1 and f2 prepared respectively in the 0 and 1 states. The program can be written with just three Fredkin gates: CSWAP b_2 f_1 f_2 CSWAP f_2 b_3 b_4 After this, the two "fuel" bits are used up and can't be relied on any more for future calculations. From the viewpoint of the entire string, of course, the entropy is constant and the process is entirely reversible; but if you only looke...
