An interview with Natasha Devon MBE: We parents often struggle with our fears about how to protect our teens when they're online. So when I received Natasha's book written for teenagers, 'Clicks; How to be Your Best Self Online', I read it cover to cover. It's a great book to give your teens to help them navigate their online world in a way that's genuinely positive, because it covers things like avoiding tech addiction, swerving fake news, who to follow, online safety, and how to put your best self forward online. What I thought might be particularly useful for us parents was the Tips and Tricks section at the back. I'm going to use each heading to bring up discussions at the dinner table so that we can have informed conversations about the issues involved.Book: Clicks: How to be Your Best Self Online by Natasha Devon MBEwww.natashadevon.comThanks for listening. Welcome to a very special, Christmas episode of the Proper Mental podcast! Tis the season that not everybody enjoys, for a lot of different reasons. I wanted to put something out at Christmas that might give someone a little lift if they needed one, even if it's just for 5 minutes. Sometimes 5 minutes can make all the difference. I reached out to advocates, campaigners, authors, speakers and podcasters and friends and I asked them to record a voice note that might be nice for someone to hear over Xmas. Some of these people I knew and some I didn't but all of them are wonderful and inspiring and I was so touched by the response. You'll have to listen to hear if there is anyone you recognise! I've put them all together here in this episode. There are some anecdotes, some advice, some kind words or useful ideas. You can listen in one go or dip in and out when you want to. It might help if you're not really in the mood for Christmas and if you love this time of year, then it will inspire you to love it even more. I reached out to a bunch of strangers and asked them to leave a supportive message for a different bunch of strangers and all these people said yes. That truly is a sign that you are not alone and to me, it's the true spirit of Xmas. There are so many support services that stay open and available during the Xmas period, please reach out if you need to. Please talk to someone if you need to. If you or anyone you know needs to find support in your local area, head to www.hubofhope.co.uk. There's a link in my bio. Natasha gives us brilliant advice on how we can all protect our mental wellbeing in and out of periods of lockdown, discusses her love of (ex-Scout!) David Bowie and how music has helped her mental health, and lots more. We all know what to do to keep physically fit, but few of us think about what we need to do to keep our minds fit and healthy. Writer and mental-health and body image campaigner, Natasha Devon argues that just as there is mental illness, there is also mental fitness. She believes that mental illness is no different to physical illness – the mind and body do not exist in silos. She talks about her campaign to get parity of treatment for mental illness and require workplaces to have mental health first aiders – just as there are physical health first aiders. We talk about body image for both men and women and the role of social media. We also discuss why debating is excellent for building resilience in children. Finally, Natasha gives her top tips for maintaining mental fitness. This is a really informative and thought-provoking conversation – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!Show notes available at drchatterjee.com/natasha Follow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
