Greetings friends and fiends, and welcome back to Ex V Planis! This season we will be inching closer and closer into stranger territory than we have ever been before, so brace yourself for a very exciting year! Tonight, we begin the first movement of Season 3. And that begins with an easy slip back into familiar territory. Over the course of the winter break, I managed to set up a series of investigations down south, that unexpectedly turned into a trio of investigations all centered around historic jailhouses. This first part of season 3 will be reviewing the experiences we had at these locations, and how they play into the long game of what we'll be doing moving forward. The first location we opted to review was the old Adams County jail in Natchez, Mississippi...my hometown. A chance encounter turned into a shared adventure with fellow investigators and the newest additions to the Ex V Planis family, Scott McCoy of Natchez Ghost Tour and Michelle Tebow of Ultimate Paranormal. Join us tonight as we peel back the shiny exterior to take a peak at the darkness underneath one of the strangest towns I've ever experienced. My own Southern-Fried version of Twin Peaks... Exit.45 by our own Auckland writer Ben Sanders. His hero is a guy named Marshall Grade, and this is a ride through the NY underworld. Living safely here in Takapuna Auckland, I'm never sure how he manages to get his US cities down so well and all the thugs who inhabit them but he's really good at it. When a former NYPD colleague is shot dead in front of him, private investigator Marshall Grade discovers there's far more to the killing than meets the eye. The Deepest South of All by Richard Grant – he's a travel writer and went to Natchez Mississippi to have a look at a town built on slavery and cotton, which it's still trying to atone for all these many years later, but evidence of its history is found everywhere and it's full of some of the most extraordinary characters you could wish to meet anywhere. Readers who loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which was a phenomenon many years ago, will love this. It's also run through with the saddest story of e genuine African Prince who was caught up in the slave trade and found himself captive in Natchez for most of his life. He deserves a book of his own.
Carlos Santana with Chris Stapleton, Joy.Ghost Hounds, Little CalamityGhost Hounds, FireflyReckless Kelly, Broken HeartBishop Gunn, On My WayBishop Gunn, Keep It In The RedThe Vegabonds, Ain't Giving UpRobert Jon and the Wreck, Movin'Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Honeysuckle BlueJason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Sometimes SalvationDion, w Patti Scialfa and Bruce Springsteen, Angel In The AlleywaysThe Georgia Thunderbolts, So You Wanna Change The WorldBad Touch, Midnight Rider

Natchez, Mississippi was a bustling and booming river town hard against the Mississippi River in 1840, it was 20 years after Mississippi joined the union and 20 years before the Civil War. But on May 7, 1840 the second deadliest tornado in U S history struck the city. A large and powerful tornado went right through the center of town, flattening most of the buildings. But even worse was the damage on the Mississippi River, which was filled with boats, including 120 flatboats and steamboats carrying people and goods along the main transport system in the part of the nation – the Mississippi River. The powerful tornado wrecked many boats at the Natchez Landing in Mississippi as well and then plowed through the city. The tornado killed 317 people and injured 109 others. The only storm on record this destructive to kill more than it injured. Many bodies were never found. The storm is still as of May 7, 2021, the second deadliest tornado on record. The actual death toll could be higher as enslaved persons were not counted. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Here we explore the ongoing repercussions of slavery, observed through the microcosm of Natchez, Mississippi, with Richard Grant, in his fifth book “The Deepest South of All.” Moving from England to Mississippi, Richard brings this distinct perspective and keen, compassionate eye to try to understand the “sleight of mind” that America still maintains about our greatest original sin. In Natchez, he found a town that both studiously maintains its Confederate “Gone with the Wind” mythology but also elected a gay black man for mayor with 91% of the vote. In its time, it was the site of both the second largest slave market in the U.S. and the most millionaires per capita; of course, those two are directly related. Richard never intended to be a writer; we talk at first about his path from England to becoming a New York Times best-selling author. Then we address the multi-layered, deeply human complexities that enable both slavery and collective forgetfulness, and its ramifications for today. In this moment of Black Lives Matter and an America in perhaps our most disturbing identity crises since the Civil War, Richard’s insights couldn’t be more timely. Please see the Show Notes for links to Richard and his works, and feel free to comment.

Mike writes “I was born and raised in Natchez Mississippi and I had two encounters with what I know understand to be a sasquatch. One encounter happened when I was about 7 years old and another time when I was maybe 20 or 21. As a young boy, I watched a neighbor give a cat and a raccoon to one of the giant creatures and there was a second one that crawled from behind her house like a giant spider and it gave me nightmares for quite some time. Another encounter happened when a friend and I were driving and we witnessed what looked like King Kong chasing a doe and a buck across the highway on a cold winter night we were heading to Fayette Mississippi from Natchez." Are you brave enough to stay the night at the haunted Myrtles Plantation? I did. Join me as I talk about the exciting stops on my summer vacation through the south, here in the US. Other paranormal spots included the King's Tavern in Natchez, MS, Oak Alley Plantation, and the Lalaurie Mansion in New Orleans. Call the show (775) 583-5563! Psst… Are you looking for the SpeakPipe link? Visit BigSeance.com for more show notes! In this episode: A quick summary of this episode! :38 Leaving St. Louis for Lamberts Cafe in Sikeston, MO 1:54 Stayed the night at the Hilton Memphis (Sorry, Elvis) 2:49 We arrived in the beautiful and historic Natchez, MS. View the photos I took around the city in my Natchez album on Flickr. 3:14 King’s Tavern — Featured on Ghost Adventures in Season 7, episode 18 from 2013. Kings Tavern is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi Territory and Natchez and its history goes all the way back to 1769. 3:36 Plan B and stumbling into a beautiful surprise! 4:17 Dinner at the historic Bowie’s Tavern — We talked to some residents who recommended we have dinner at Bowie’s Tavern, which is on Broadway in Natchez. And they made a great choice for us. Good food and really nice people. The historic building overlooks the Mississippi river and was originally a cotton warehouse. They also proudly display a mahogany bar that was built around 1880. They also have lodging on the upper floor with a view of the river! 5:04 Spending the morning in the beautiful Natchez City Cemetery for some photography. Check out that photo album on Flickr. 6:03 The mysterious and unique grave of Florence Irene Ford (Sept 3, 1861 - Oct 30, 1871), who died of yellow fever at the age of 10. This grave was constructed with a set of open concrete stairs that descend next to what would be the head of Florence’s body, with the headstone above. Learn more about this grave at GhostInMySuitcase.com. 8:05 Before leaving Natchez, we toured the Monmouth Mansion (built in 1818) and the beautiful gardens and small cemetery that surrounds it. Check out my Monmouth Mansion photo album on Flickr. 10:03 The Myrtles Plantation (built circa. 1796) in St. Francisville, LA — If you are as big of a paranerd as I am, you’ve probably seen the Ghost Hunters investigation of Myrtles from way back in 2005, episode 1 of their 2nd season. You’ve also probably seen the The Ghost Adventures crew investigate the place just last year in season 9, episode 2. 10:46 The lovely Miss Hester 11:33 Some audio with a little bit of the atmosphere of the haunted Myrtles Plantation. 12:25 The Myrtles Plantation Tour 14:15 Some of the legends of the Myrtles Plantation 16:18 The Haunted Mirror 17:01 The ghost of Chloe — Probably the biggest legend of the Myrtles. Chloe was supposedly the slave closest to the Woodruff family, who purchased the home in 1820 and remodeled it. Was she Mr. Woodruff’s mistress? Did she poison Mrs. Woodruff, along with Cornelia and James, two of the children? Was one of her ears cut off? And was she hung from a nearby tree? 19:03 The nursery, or the “Ruffin Stirling Room”, which is where we stayed for the night. The two children, Cornelia and James Woodruff, were apparently taken to this room, where they later died. 21:26 Kate, Cleo, Voodoo, and other deaths at the Myrtles. 21:47 More about the “terrifying” bed shaking experiences that have been reported in the nursery/Ruffin Stirling Room. 22:34 Before bed we tried to reach out to any of the spirits of the Myrtles by conducting an EVP, Spirit Box, and Ouija session in the nursery. 23:06 Who changed the track on my recorder while we were sleeping? 26:23 More audio of me touring the grounds of the Myrtles, including the pond and cabins around the back of the property. 28:26 View my Myrtles Plantation photo album on Flickr. Our visit to Grace Cemetery and the Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, LA. You can find the Grace Cemetery photo album on Flickr. 30:18 The beautiful and reportedly haunted Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, LA. It’s one of the more popular plantations. In fact, you’ve probably seen it in photos or even as the Hollywood backdrop of a movie or two. It was featured in Season 4, episode 19 of Ghost Hunters in 2008. The rows of 300 year old oak trees are breath taking. Check out my Oak Alley Plantation album on Flickr. 32:36 Heading to New Orleans and the overwhelming heaviness or anxiety that I was feeling. 33:45 Our stay at the Hotel St. Marie in the French Quarter, and its connection to American Horror Story: Coven. 34:25 Bourbon Street 35:15 Our spectacular dinner and experience at the Oceana Grill 35:30 Incense, sage, tarot cards, and my mom’s visit to the Voodoo shops (Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo and Reverend Zombie’s House of Voodoo)! 35:43 Cafe Beignet for lunch 36:20 Dinner and my delicious Po’boy at the Vacherie Restaurant at the Hotel St. Marie. 36:32 On the way out the French Quarter, mom dropped me off at the Lalaurie Mansion. Hopefully you remember my interview with Victoria Cosner Love, who authored the book on Madame Delphine Lalaurie, the real life murderess portrayed in American Horror Story: Coven. If not, you can check out episode 7 of the podcast from August 6, 2014. 36:47 Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Those photos can be found in an album on Flickr. 37:35 What’s the opposite of the French Quarter in New Orleans? Long Beach, MS, which was the last leg of our trip. Charlottesville: “What happens to a dream deferred” wrote Langston Hughes in the poem Harlem. Hughes was referring to the frustrations of African-American life 90 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Does the deferred Dream explode, the poet asked. What happens, ironically when the deferred dream is that of white supremacy and the Confederacy risen? Does it also explode? Charlottesville is the latest detonation in a process that has been left unaddressed for decades, for more than a century and a half really. Arguably since the founding of the United States. This piece from the FRDH archive is from 1995 is based on an evening I spent with the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Natchez Mississippi which nearly ended in a fistfight over the meaning of the Constitution. Hughes poem in full: “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?”
