One of the true pleasures of a lifetime in music and broadcasting is connecting with artists at the very beginning of their careers. If the connection is a strong friendship, emotionally you get to go along for the ride. On the downside,  you must be prepared to lose those friends along the way through attrition, lifestyle and medical issues. I'm pleased to say Colin James has given all of us a great ride. 8 Junos, 31 Maple Blues Awards, Induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, Order of BC and turning 60 years old with 21 studio albums under his belt. Colin has played his way through an amazing collection of audiences.  Starting with Stevie Ray style  Texas blues, then blues rock, big band swing, roots, Americana and all the way back to blues. What a Ride!! Following a stellar concert at Massey Hall, Colin is on a Canadian tour now and he's heading our way.  With the wonderful Terra Lightfoot! Feb 26 -Grey Eagle   Calgary Feb 27 – N Jubilee Edmonton March 1 – Orpheum Vancouver March 3 – Royal Theatre  Victoria March 4 & 5 – Port Theatre Nanaimo Colin is a master storyteller. This time he has tales of recovering from a road accident on his scooter in the USA. Damage to his foot and fret hand slowed him down considerably. He has stories of becoming what he dreamed of as an 8-year-old and the biography he's almost finished writing. The complete interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel.

On August 25th and 26th, 1990, Alpine Valley Music Festival hosted 2 sold-out shows featuring headliner Eric Clapton, along with special guests, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and the Robert Cray Band. Both shows played to 40,000 strong, and the second show ended with one of the most legendary collections of guiratists on one stage at the same time, when Clapton was joined on stage by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Jeff Healy, Buddy Guy, and Stevie's brother, Jimmie Vaughan. The concert turned out to be Stevie Ray's final show, as by the end of the night he would be dead, and the music world left stunned and saddened. What exactly happened on that night? And why, almost 35 years later, do people who witnessed the show still talk about Stevie appearing almost supernatural... as if almost already a ghost? Scott and Mickey discuss one of the most iconic shows in rock music history, its aftermath, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's life, one that ended way too soon, on the side of a ski hill in East Troy, WI.  Seldom do you find stars that have been at the top of the industry for 30 years. Booker T Huffman is one of those few. He came to national fame in the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as one half of the team Harlem Heat alongside his brother Stevie Ray. After years of tag team action, Booker T was given a singles push in WCW and it propelled him to five world championships. And that was all before he went to WWE. Then in WWE, Booker T faced all the greats including The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. In this episode, we talk at length about one thing that Booker T is remembered for that really wasn't a match. That was when Booker T and Austin tore up a supermarket in a brawl. It is a clip from wrestling history that fans still talk about today.

Presenting: The LAST Talk'n WCW! That's right, the rumors and innuendos are true. For various reasons, as you will hear in full transparency, the time has come to wrap up the show. We're making every effort to go out on a high note, however, by paying tribute to WCW's most decorated tag team: Harlem Heat! First up, an energetic Nitro opener against frequent rivals with their freshly-won World Tag Team Championship at stake. Then, a surprisingly competitive contest pitting the Heat against a main event tag team and taking them to the limit. Finally, we send the show out in style by way of a turbulent tornado match for the ages, which only the commentary trio of Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan, and Dusty Rhodes may have possibly loved more. All that and Sherri too! Whether they were turning in reliably strong TV performances week after week, mixing it up in the midcard with some of the wildest PPV brawls, or holding their own against the biggest stars of the day, Booker T and Stevie Ray unquestionably raised the roof on tag team wrestling in the '90s! Jenny, Tim, and Greg extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of the listeners who have supported us over the years. We have received nothing but encouragement and positive feedback along the way, so it is with extremely mixed emotions that we bid you farewell. Signing off, for now if not forever, this has been Talk'n WCW.

EP#454 - Call Me Luck with Guest: Bill Small

Who is Bill Small?Bill Small is no stranger to diversifying his skills; he's made his living as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Mystiquero, entrepreneur, artist, producer, vocal coach, business and personal coach... all facets that combine into a potent musical force evident on his latest release, Call Me Lucky.Bill grew up in a musical household where everyone could sing, just a stone's throw from the Big Apple. From Sinatra and swing to show-tunes. Todd Rundgren to Pink Floyd. Growing up in the 70's with FM radio and 2 older sisters to steal records from, he caught the music bug bad. Part of his teen years were spent learning everything he could about theater while working as a student performer and intern at The Whole Theater Company in Montclair, NJ. When he wasn't doing that he was writing songs and.....you guessed it, playing in bands! Bill moved around some during high school with his family, and then on his own after graduation, and always found a band to play music with. Playing in bands has been a constant for most of his life. After 2 years studying voice at at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and another couple of years living in Jersey and working in New York City, he decided to make a change. His family had lived in a magical place called Austin, TX before he was born, and when he was very young, they used to take family vacations to Texas. He had been hearing about all the great music there and of course, being in his "Guitar Slinger" phase, the lure of Stevie Ray was too hard to resist. Bill moved to Austin along with two great friends and fine musicians from Jersey, and they found themselves performing all over Austin in the early nineties as Heavy Weather.More bands came and went in the nineties (Radio Thieves, Stringbones), and a solo record entitled Singin. There was a move back to Boston, then to Nashville, a divorce and then finally a move back to Austin in 2004. As Bill puts it, fate intervened for his longest running band gig to date. “I got a call from my friend Marcus Eldridge, another old friend from Texas who had recently returned from Nashville. He was having lunch with my friend John Greenberg, and Walt Wilkins. I heard Walt in Nashville and we met once briefly, and I was a big fan of his music. Walt needed a band for a gig at Gruene Hall and John was kind enough to remind him that I played the bass. So the Mystiqueros were born on stage at Gruene Hall in the spring of 2006. Best band I've ever worked with. Period.”Since then, there's been more records produced and or engineered, lots of miles, lots of shows, and lots more to come. Call Me Lucky is Bill's latest solo offering...a soulful and thoughtful album full of plenty of stomp and groove. Coupled with Bill's unmistakable vocal style, it makes for a journey just as entertaining as his life story. The year is 1999 and Kevin Nash is in charge of writing this episode of WCW Thunder! The Finger Poke of Doom just happened and The nWo has reformed as a super group called the nWo Elite. However, there is another group of nWo guys who are getting fed up with the way things are, the nWo B-Team. This group consisted of Stevie Ray, Horace Hogan, Vincent, Brian Adams, and Scott Norton! As we kick off WCW Thunder, the nWo B-Team is getting tired of waiting on the nWo Wolfpac Elite to arrive at the building so they send Horace Hogan out to the parking garage to wait for them to arrive. When the nWo limo arrives, it's anything but the nWo, it's actually the 4 Horsemen and they beat the crap out of Horace Hogan! Later that night the nWo B-Team challenged the 4 Horsemen to a 6 man tag match for the Main Event! As this is going on, Vincent changes his shirt from the nWo black and white to the red and black, causing chaos within the group. Also, Ric Flair is in charge of WCW as he recently shaved Eric Bischoff's head and we are building to Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan at WCW SuperBrawl IX for the WCW World Championship! On the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer, UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen and PFL lightweight finalist Stevie Ray join the show. With his main event against Song Yadong coming in September, Sandhagen previews his fight while admitting he was surprised when that name was offered to him as an opponent following back-to-back fights with TJ Dillashaw and Petr Yan. Sandhagen will address the loss to Yan while also explaining why he's picking reigning UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling to keep his title when he faces Dillashaw in October. Ray also joins the show to celebrate his second consecutive win over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and the oddity of facing the same opponent just a few weeks after their first fight. The veteran lightweight discusses his current pay situation in the PFL where he actually made less money for his rematch with Pettis than his first fight while also detailing his plans to claim the championship later this year, which he hopes will complete his comeback after he retired from the sport a few years ago. Pettis will also discuss what it's like to get ready for the exact same opponent as he prepares to face Ray again on Friday, just weeks after their first meeting in the PFL. Sam Alvey also joins the show to detail how the UFC offered him the chance to finish out his contract with one fight remaining despite a lackluster resume over the past few years where he's amassed just an 0-7-1 record over his last eight fights. Alvey reveals how the UFC gave him the chance under the assumption that he would retire afterwards but he has other ideas.
