Are we following Christ this New Year? Many had left their previous engagements to follow Jesus superficially for the drama and entertainment, seeking signs that were different from what they meant. They sought physical food, not spiritual. And it was time for Jesus in His ministry to make them choose, they had a grace period, but now that period came to expiration, so through His word, they were going to be forced to either become true believers (i.e., truly believing what Jesus was teaching, having faith in Him and acting upon that faith producing obedience in the work of God which leads to eternal life), OR, they could go back to the Pharisees and their way of life before Christ. What will we choose to do in this new year? Will we follow the Word of Christ, which leads to eternal life, or recoil and return to the Pharisees and the synagogues they oppress? Will we return to sin or remain free in Christ? Going back to lawlessness has a dead end, but continuing with Christ has much hope and goals. We will convert souls, and we will purchase land. We will be neighbors, and we will build a school for our Lord. We will continue to be a growing family united in all things and have eternal life. All who seek redemption come to Christ in repentance; if we get in contact with the flesh and blood of Christ, we will be born again, and if we are born again, He will keep us secure in His love.

I will not be with you at New Year so I would like to preach to you today, my New Year Sermon. We are looking at Psalm 67, what is otherwise known as the missionary psalm. This is a psalm written at harvest time, written during a time of blessing, a psalm that reflects on God's goodness and the purpose of God's goodness. We come to the end of 2022 and look forward to 2023. There have been many difficulties that have been experienced of late, some have experience sickness, or injury, or loss. But the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning. As we sit here today we need to remember that we are a blessed people. Not only has God given us His best in His Son He has also with Him freely given us all things. We ought to look back over this year with great gratitude for the Lord's goodness to us. Today I would like us to explore why we are blessed, to what end do we receive the blessing of God, how should our hearts respond to these blessings, what should we want to gain by these blessings? This psalm will help us to do this under two headings, looking at v1-3 we will see that we are to seek God's glory; and the second half of the psalm points us to seeking the joy of the nations. This is far from Spurgeon's most polished sermon, structurally. Some preachers envy Spurgeon's golden hammer, with which he seems to strike every text so that it falls into three even parts. This one pulls in too many different directions, and its progress is not particularly even. However, it is held together by two threads- adoration of Christ and affection for Christ's people. That, too, must be recognised. Order and structure, as Spurgeon very much appreciated, are important, and there is no excuse for their neglect in sermon preparation. Nevertheless, even a ragged sermon aimed from the heart to the heart can do much good. That is an encouragement to preachers not to be too much concerned with style and structure over substance, and an encouragement to hearers to be less critics of sermons, more eager hearers of divine truth.

Stay Rooted in your faith Mont Belvieu! Paul asks the Colossians to continue living their lives in Jesus. This is a challenge for today's church as much as it was for them. When thinking about a brand new year, what do you want for your life? Do you want to have a closer relationship with Jesus? What are you willing to do to get that? God shows us throughout scripture that he always stands with open arms waiting on the arrival of the sinner who repents. Are you willing to come back to him? In Matthew's gospel, Jesus talks about building a foundation on the sand or the rock. One foundation is firm while the other is easily swept away to sea. Jesus said the rains will come either way, but you have to pick a foundation for your life. When it's all over how do you think you will remember 2022? We can suspect what the coming year will bring, but if we've learned anything over the past few years, none of us really know what's going to happen. In many ways, we have no control over what will happen in 2022. Yet, there are a few things we can take comfort in to ensure that 2022 will be a year to remember.Sermon: "A 2022 To Remember"Scripture: James 4:13-17Speaker: Pastor Tim ChicolaDate: January 2, 2022
