Gemma and Ian talk to Aoibheann Gillespie-Mules. Aoibheann (pronounced E-Fin) grew up along the gorgeous NW coast of Ireland so was drawn to the ocean from an early age. She finished a Bachelor in Marine Science then participated in a whale shark project in Mozambique and ultimately knew she wanted nothing more than to be under the surface daily. She travelled to the tropics to begin professional training in the diving industry. Aoibheann , during lockdown co-authored a bi-lingual children's book ‘Ocean Adventures with Cory,' with a dear friend (founder of Oceanus Conservation) - a project focussing on ensuring that ocean literacy is accessible to the local communities that rely on the marine environment. Throughout her diving career she has always been fascinated with marine life beauty and photographing their incredible structures. By sharing the beauty of the marine environment through images (www.coralreefbeauty.com) she hopes to help educate and spread more awareness, highlighting the importance of these amazing marine ecosystems. Change Makers: Leadership, Good Business, Ideas and Innovation
Dr Elin Haf Davies is an endurance rower, whose 77-day voyage across the Atlantic was the first in a line of adventures that led to her becoming part of the first all-woman team to row across the Indian Ocean and later, completing a “hat-trick of oceans” by sailing the Pacific. Through these voyages, Elin has raised over £300,000 for causes close to her heart and has been recognised by the Welsh Assembly for “services to Wales”. But with ever the thirst for adventure, Elin has continued to make a difference after gaining her PhD and going onto a successful career as a scientific researcher and founder of healthcare innovation platform Aparito, which she still leads today. It's a long way from her early career, which began as a Premiership rugby prop forward for Alton and London Wasps, when she also competed for five years at international level for Wales A. In this conversation with Michael, Elin discusses what has inspired her “squiggly career” and what comes next for someone who is always looking for the next great adventure.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
Let’s talk about the economy. An exciting start to any conversation, right? Here’s the thing: events like Ontario’s spring bear hunt are pushed by governments because they look at the financial impact of them. But here’s the thing: hunting and trapping aren’t the only activities that bring in dollars to the province. In fact, ecotourism as a whole is a multi-billion dollar industry in Ontario and British Columbia – and hunting is a tiny fraction of the cash flow created. In the last episode of the show we spoke about the spring bear hunt in Ontario – and if you haven’t heard that episode along with advocacy options please do go back and listen to it. In this episode we’re talking about the wild world of ecotourism in general terms through the experiences of an ethical and successful operator, Eric Boyum. The owner/operator of Ocean Adventures on the coast of beautiful British Columbia, Eric and his partner and photographer extraordinaire Trish take both local residents and international visitors to explore the coastline, see the beauty of the natural environment and get a chance to witness and photograph stunning wildlife. Eric joined Defender Radio recently to discuss his business and experience, the opportunities that exist for people with outdoor experience in the ecotourism sector and the ethics and considerations he takes into account on a daily basis. This week, Mitchell interviews the world-renowned conservationist, ocean-protector, Jacques-Yves Cousteau's grandson, FabienCousteau who has continued and advanced the family's important legacy. Fabien spent his early years aboard his famous grandfather's ships, Calypso and Alcyone; and learning how to scuba dive on his fourth birthday. He is well known for his study of sharks and from 2000-2002, Fabien was an Explorer-at-Large for National Geographic and collaborated on a TV special aimed at changing public conceptions about sharks called, “Attack of the Mystery Shark,”. Then in 2003-2006, he produced the documentary, “Mind of a Demon,” that aired on CBS. With the help of a large crew, Fabien created a 14-foot, 1,200-pound, lifelike shark submarine called “Troy” that enabled him to immerse himself inside the shark world, providing viewers with a rare view of the mysterious and often misunderstood creatures. For the next four years (2006-2010), Fabien was part of a multi-hour series for PBS called, “Ocean Adventures” with his father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, and sister, Céline. Inspired by his grandfather's famous 1978 PBS series, “The Cousteau Odyssey”. Fabien will be the keynote speaker at the 12th Annual Earth & World Peace Celebration on Sunday, April 21 in NYC. This week, we are presenting two stories from people who took to the open ocean. Part 1: As an irresponsible 17-year-old, Brian D. Bradley volunteers to spend two days living at the bottom of the ocean for a research study. Part 2: As an undergrad, Beryl Kahn takes a semester at sea after a bad breakup and gets rocked by the swells of the sea -- and her emotions. Brian Bradley started writing because he couldn’t draw. At first he wanted to be a poet, but he quickly discovered that poems are pretty difficult. Next, he tried dramatic stage plays, but the results were kind of embarrassing. Finally, he gave up and started writing television for shows like MadTV, Scrubs and Happy Endings. He co-created for television Uncle Buck for ABC and is the writer/producer of a number of TV pilots he’s very proud to have been paid for, but that you will probably never see. He’s very pleased to have a chance to share a story for Story Collider and he still can’t draw. Beryl Kahn is finishing up her second year as a Masters' student at Columbia University's department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology, or E3B, where she's been studying the genetics of pollution resilience in oysters. Prior to starting grad school, she worked as an educator and restoration tech at Randall's Island Park in New York City, which cemented her niche as an urban marine ecologist. Shooting a bear is remarkably easy. You need someone to help you find them, the equipment and knowledge of that equipment to be able to line up the shot, a bit of patience, and then you either push a button – or pull a trigger. Trish Boyum and her husband Eric own Ocean Adventures, a successful ecotourism business on the coast, and are also advocates for the protection of grizzlies and other wildlife. Trish joined Defender Radio to share her reaction to the announcement on trophy hunting, how her husband confronted armed hunters trying to poach a grizzly bear in a provincial park, and why only one type of shooting has a future for grizzlies in British Columbia.
Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
Today the infamous trophy hunt of grizzly bears in British Columbia begins – and it’s no April Fool’s prank. Hunters from around the world will pay for the chance to hunt down one of the province’s most important predators – all for the sake of getting a trophy. This issue has been covered extensively in past Defender Radio episodes, on our blog, and through traditional media. But today I was joined by two people who see first hand the importance, beauty and wonder of grizzly bears in British Columbia. Eric and Trish Boyum own and operate Ocean Adventures aboard the Great Bear II – an ecotourism business and wildlife viewing vessel. The two have the opportunity to see beautiful grizzly cubs grow into adults, witness the important role they play in a sensitive ecosystem, and marvel at the incredible diversity of life along the coast of British Columbia. They are also among the first humans to see the travesty of a trophy hunt, and see the emotional and economic impacts. Eric and Trish joined Defender Radio today to talk about the spring trophy hunt, their business, and why we must all speak for the grizzly bears of British Columbia.
