On this week of the Any Given Runday Podcast, we chat with Gavan Hennigan (@soulogav on Instagram), an extreme ultra runner and adventurer who has gone from early struggles with addiction in his youth and subsequent rehabilitation journey to transitioning from recreational sports to extreme adventure sports along with balancing that with living and working as a commercial diver, which mentally prepared him for endurance challenges that we talk about in this episode. In detail, we discuss two of Gavan's most significant challenges:Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a gruelling solo row across the Atlantic Ocean. Labeled the World's Toughest Row, Gavan would row up to 19 hours a day along this 5000km trek that took 49 days to finish. And the 1000-mile Iditarod Trail, which took him over 24 days to complete. We discuss the logistics, gear, environmental challenges, and mental toughness required for the race, along with the historical context and importance of the Iditarod Trail. Gavan then shares his personal experiences, encounters, and strategies during the race, including facing severe cold and isolation. This inspirational episode is a must listen. You can follow us on Instagram: @anygivenrundaypodcast

From leading covert counter-terrorism operations for the British military for two decades to becoming the fastest Briton to solo row the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge – achieving the 3000-mile crossing from San Sebastian in the Canary Islands to Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua in just 46 days – Mike Bates knows a thing or two about performing under pressure.Whether the enemy was a Taliban insurgent in the middle of Afghanistan or a 40-foot wave in the middle of the night, Bates's preparedness and resilience has empowered him to rise to every challenge.Yet not even men like Mike, who has more motivation and determination than most of us can imagine, can do it alone. That's why after his distinguished military career and fresh from his endurance challenge heroics he co-founded NXT45, an innovative health, performance and wellbeing company dedicated to supporting men through midlife.More than just an events and community-building company, Bates wants NXT45 to be more like a movement, helping men navigate the often tumultuous transition from the first half of their lives to the second. The name NXT45 signifies this shift, focusing on the next 45 years and beyond. For many men the first half of their life is driven by testosterone-fuelled pursuits such as power, ambition, money and success. Yet as men approach middle age, these goals often shift towards more family-oriented values like support, community and mentorship. Navigating this shift successfully, Bates argues, is crucial for your long-term health and happiness. In our exclusive Unfiltered interview, Bates sheds light on why understanding this transition will empower men to take back control of their lives and find new purpose and meaning. Knowledge, communication and support, he says, will also prevent them descending into a pit of despair and depression as they contemplate their lost youth and the inevitable march towards their own mortality. One of the most compelling aspects of Bates's message is his belief in the power of community, something many men at all stages of their life don't feel or experience. Through NXT45 he aims to foster environments where men can connect, share experiences and support each other. This sense of camaraderie and mutual support, an essential asset in the military, can be a lifeline for those struggling with midlife transitions.Bates's unique perspective, shaped by his diverse and hair-raising experiences, makes him a compelling voice for men approaching middle age. His blend of practical advice, motivational insights and personal anecdotes can provide you with the blueprint for navigating your midlife with grace and purpose. For exclusive access to all Unfiltered's video interviews, features and documentaries visit https://unfilteredonline.com/Get in touch in the comments below or talk to us on:Email: editorial@unfilteredonline.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGSV7XVaBYUYq5YidLI12owInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unfiltered.extraTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/UnfilteredExtra

"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Proud and delighted to welcome BACK for a second row past - with the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean for his 'Clearing', Scottish Actor Cal MacAninch, here to describe his Epic Quest and the profound lessons-learned from having just rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a Crew of 5, as part of "Atlantic Body & Soul" for the Talisker Whisker Atlantic Challenge.A story of Distinction & Genius indeed: Massive waves, sleep deprivation, pain, flying fish and hallucinations akimbo to name but some of what was experienced during an epic quest of 39 days and gargantuan proportions.Cal MacaAninch is a wonderful & versatile Scottish Actor and now an Atlantic Rowing Superhero & Legend to boot (or to boat - see what I'm doing there?!)More about Cal: Whatever Cal MacAninch has achieved as an actor - and the body of his work is impressive - he now has a rare achievement indeed to add, as a rower. Cal has just rowed the Atlantic! And this is no mean achievement - for almost 40 days, Cal and the other 4 crew members set about this extraordinary journey in consecutive 2 hour shifts, 24/7. The effects of daily sleep deprivation and almost endless, constantly painful physical exercise are virtually unimaginable. Fortunately for us, Cal MacAninch has an actor's memory and a wonderful way with with words. This podcast focuses relentlessly on his one truly epic and almost certainly life-changing experience. Cal tells us about the constant need for calories and hydration, up to 6000 every day and endless refreshment. Yet the impact still left everyone in a state that Cal describes as ‘breakdown' and in his case, the witness of numerous totally lifelike hallucinations. The whole journey was undertaken to raise money for two chosen charities whose primary purpose is to improve mental health care for young people - but the crew's own mental health was severely tested in the process! Cal is now debriefing his personal experience to a leading neurological scientist in Scotland. He acknowledges that it was was an ordeal but one that changed him - for the better! It left him he believes, with a better perspective: a more tolerant attitude, a kinder man, a better listener. Hear it all here for yourself. It is a truly extraordinary story - and it's all true! Harrowing though it is at times, Cal MacAninch tells it calmly and quietly but with a refreshing brand of candour and his own uniquely authentic Scottish sincerity.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Recordamos la entrevista que mantuvimos en Tripulante18 sobre esta aventura con Quim Planells, uno de sus componentes.

Having started rowing at Marlow Rowing Club on the Thames in 2014, rowing seemed like an appropriate choice. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge beckoned and a chance telephone call with the son of a friend who had recently succumbed to cancer yielded an enthusiastic response. So it was that David, an extreme sports enthusiast and a strong supporter of entrepreneurship, joined the crew.Guy and David set off to row the 3,000 miles from the Canaries to Antigua in December 2021. The IOPC has said: "We believe these incidents are not isolated or simply the behaviour of a few 'bad apples'." The Met has said that it is 'sorry'. We hear reaction from Zoe Billingham, former Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary. And we hear from listener Amanda,. Her son, George, is planning to join the Police later this year and she is worried but he is determined to be part of the change. Big investment firms are missing out on up to 2.37 trillion pounds of potential investment because of their poor record in attracting female investors. That was a warning this week from the giant investment bank BNY Mellon, which revealed only 28% of women feel confident in investing their money. Anne-Marie McConnon is the bank's chief client experience officer, and she tells us more about their findings. Stacey Dooley has been presenting television documentaries for over 10 years – on everything from drug cartels in Southern Spain to illegal pornography in South Korea. Now the Sunday Times bestselling author has released a new book, exploring the state of mental health in the UK. ‘Are You Really OK?' looks at – amongst other things – issues of PTSD, depression, psychosis; and what causes these things. Stacey reveals what she's learnt. Yesterday on the programme we discussed the culture of policing in the light of misogynistic, discriminatory and violent texts exchanged between serving officers between 2016 and 2018. They were revealed as part of an IOPC investigation at Charing Cross police station in London. These revelations follow the murder of Sarah Everard and the treatment of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman by serving Metropolitan Police officers. We asked how can a toxic culture be changed? A mother, Amanda, contacted us while we were on air. Her son, George, is planning to join the Police later this year and she is worried but he is determined to be part of the change. They both join Emma. Two women with no previous rowing experience have smashed the world record for the fastest female pair to row across the Atlantic. They join us to discuss the experience. Some of Afghanistan's public universities reopened yesterday for the first time since the Taliban took over the country, with female students joining their male counterparts heading back to classes. Girls are still not allowed to attend secondary schools, and women remain barred from many jobs outside the health and teaching sector. This is unfolding against the backdrop of a major humanitarian crisis. Fawzia Koofi, the former Vice President of the National Assembly in Kabul and women's rights activist, updates us. You know the rhyme “divorced beheaded died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” The first women to lose her head at the hands of Henry VIII was Anne Boleyn - and her story is so often characterised by that tragic outcome that we may have overlooked the fact that she was a feminist and ahead of her time. This is the view of Dr Owen Emmerson who has curated an exhibition at Hever Castle - Anne's childhood home - called Becoming Anne: Connections, Culture, Court. But can she be seen as a feminist when the word hadn't even been invented? Emma is joined by Owen and Tracy Borman, the Tudor historian and Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces who is currently writing a book about the relationship between Anne Boleyn and her daughter Elizabeth. Ali MacDonald & Greg Potter Ali is co-founder and CEO at Resilient Nutrition is a former soldier, active endurance athlete, and coach, and is fascinated by resilience and what enables some people to achieve what they previously thought impossible. After spending 15 years working in the data, insights and technology space at Accenture, he combined his passion for human performance with his technology experience to found Optimal Human Performance, a company that works with scientists and coaches to help individuals and teams test the limits of their abilities, often in extreme environments. It was this experience and getting to work with his co-founder, Dr Greg Potter, that lead to the creation of Resilient Nutrition. Greg Potter leads the development of Resilient Nutrition products. He has a PhD in nutrition, circadian rhythms, sleep, and metabolism, and an MSc and a BSc in sports science. He is a health and performance consultant and is a regular keynote speaker at international health summits. Highlights of Greg's career include working with US Naval Special Warfare, coaching a sprinter to four gold medals at the European Championships, being the sleep expert on a Channel 4 documentary, and having his research featured in dozens of international news outlets, including the BBC, Reuters, TIME, and The Washington Post. Ali is particularly fond of punishing exercise, the jungle, bagpipes, and biltong. Greg is particularly fond of early starts, volcanoes, diving, and fish pie. Ali has always been interested in endurance sports and how to fuel for endurance events. He knows it is not just the food but also a psychological element that enables him to keep going. Greg, whilst not low carb or keto, focuses on nutrition, exercise and sleep and appreciates that all aspects of lifestyle influence how we feel and how we function. Together they created a product to help two rowers cross the Atlantic in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge that was nutritious, energy-dense, easy to digest foods that will be stable without a fridge for several weeks at a time. This led to them co-founding Resilient Nutrition, whose products are not only for athletes for those who are wanting to make intelligent choices in optimising their health and performance. We discuss the nuance of carbohydrate loading for different activities. Greg also talks in-depth about exercise, nutrition, sleep and how to improve your sleep. Ali's Top Tips Be thoughtful about what you eat Remember what you eat affects how you feel and perform Think about the relationship between what you eat and how you sleep Greg's Top Tips Humans have existed for the majority of time on this planet as pre-industrial people so we need to mimic that lifestyle by being outdoors Take care to reduce the effects of chronic low-grade stress Give back when you can Resources Mentioned https://resilientnutrition.com/pages/principles/ The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance - Dr Jeff S Volek and Dr Stephen D Phinney https://amzn.to/3oggmF4 Thinking, Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman https://amzn.to/3kU8BUe https://www.jetlagrooster.com Quotes by Ali and Greg “I've struggled with finding a food system that works for me. 'Life Happens' is the podcast that helps you build mental fitness, speaking to inspirational people about life's ups and downs, how they've overcome setbacks and what it means to them to be mentally fit. Abby Johnston, Kat Cordiner and Charlotte Irving make up Team ExtraOARdinary, an extraordinary rowing crew that will embark on the huge challenge of rowing an ocean later this year. Taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, they will depart from La Gomera, in the Canary Islands, and attempt to row 3,000 miles to English Harbour, Antigua, across the planet's second largest ocean. Together, they hope to be the fastest all-female trio to complete the challenge, beating the current record of 49 days, 13 hours and 49 mins. In the latest episode of ‘Life Happens', our marketing director, James Gwinnett, caught up with Abby and Kat to find out what is driving them on this incredible journey. Veterans of the ‘high seas', Abby and Kat met whilst taking on the famous Round the World Clipper Race in 2017, spending 31 days together sailing across the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, life hasn't been ‘plain sailing' for Kat since then; she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in early 2019. She went into remission but, despite chances of recurrence of around 5%, was told in July 2020 that the cancer had returned, and has since undergone heart surgery. Currently navigating treatment while continuing her training for the row, Kat's strength – and the commitment of her crewmates – is an example to all of us of how to overcome setbacks. If you like the episode, please subscribe to our YouTube channel and share it with your friends to help them build mental fitness.

In this episode we talk to Jasmine Harrison and Mark Sealey. Both of them have completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and rowed 3000 miles from the Canary Island of La Gomera to Antigua. Jasmine Harrison represented the team Rudderly Mad and did the crossing solo. Mark Sealey rowed the Atlantic as part of the 4 person Force Genesis team. Both of them experienced Sargassum during their crossing and tell us the story of their crossing. Niki Doeg and Frances Davies were half of the crew known as Yorkshire Rows, who rowed across the Atlantic as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 2015.They subsequently wrote a book called “Four Mums in a Boat”, charting their journey from Saturday morning river rowing novices to full blown Ocean rowers. It is a story of the highs and lows, the mum guilt, the juggling of jobs, families, training, insane amounts of organisation, fund raising and finally the row itself. The chat is fun and funny. These two middle aged women regularly reminded me of my own girlfriends, trying to carve out precious time for themselves amongst all the noise and busy- ness of life.We chat about the importance of just saying YES. Even if you feel you'd be no good at it, the slowest, the last, the least “natural” at it.Saying yes to an adventure led them to finding their truest selves as well as best friends who became like family. If you want to be inspired to step out of your comfort zone in order to achieve something great, then listen to these women. Then read their incredible book and laugh and cry your way across the Atlantic with them.Just brilliant.

And, the world is witnessing the biggest vaccine campaign in history. Now, eight weeks since the first COVID-19 shots arrived, where are we with vaccine rollout? Also, an all-female rowing team based in the UK have become the first team to complete the 3,000-mile Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in an eco-boat.

Day 1, the day everything that could go wrong, went wrong. After 588 days of preparation, plus 2 extra days because the start of the race, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, got put back due to weather conditions, I pushed my 7 metre (23 ft) ocean rowing boat away from the marina in La Gomera (Canary Islands) and rowed into the unknown. I felt prepared for many things, but I was not ready for what happened after only 6 hours into a 5000km trans-Atlantic crossingTo be apart of the journey and get in touch with the podcast, contact on:Instagram > https://www.instagram.com/deep_roots_podcast/>https://www.instagram.com/auld_stock/?hl=enWebsite > https://www.damianbrowne.com/Produced by baLORE MediaExecutive Producer: Niall Killeney Taylor See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Today's conversation is with the Broar Brothers, Triple World Record Holders who rowed the 3,000 mile Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in January 2020, beating many teams of four and five. The boys share everything around their preparation for the challenges, regarding training, nutrition, mindset and equipment. We touch on gut health, preparing for challenging environment and situations. We learn about the biggest challenges that occurred during the challenge, as well as being able to enter a flow state and how we can perhaps learn lessons from this to be more present in everyday life. Having raised just under £200,000 at this stage for their two charities of choice - Feedback Madagascar and Children First, we get a teaser of what the boys might aim to complete as their next challenge. They are also open to ideas, so any wild ideas please feel free to share! Many of our listeners and clients are concerned about how best to fuel for longer events or training. While many athletes are downing sports gels and high carb drinks we have always advocated for alternatives that keep you competitive while helping you maintain consistent energy levels. Overall diet composition plays a big role in preparing for competition, as does meal timing, but for long events or a busy lifestyle, it also helps to be able to pack the right fuel to keep going. Joining me this week is Greg Potter, PhD. Greg has been on the podcast numerous times to talk about sleep, chronotypes, and chrononutrition. Today he is with us as the Chief Science Officer of Resilient Nutrition, a company that has created Long Range Fuel, a new line of nut-butter based nutrition products for fueling sustainable performance. Greg talks about how an early version of Long Range Fuel helped power a world record-breaking trans-Atlantic rowing event in 2019. He also shares the science behind the specific ingredients they’ve included to boost your workout, keep you calm, and support your recovery and strength. The Braw and The Brave is a podcast about people and their passions. Episode 97 is in conversation with the Maclean brothers, also known as BROAR. In late 2019 Ewan, Jamie and Lachlan undertook the world's toughest row, The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, arriving in Antigua 35 days later breaking the world record for the fastest row across the Atlantic. An endurance test for mind, body and spirit, they faced this epic adventure in support of two chosen charities, Feedback Madagascar and Children 1st and continue to raise funds through their ‘Whisky For Water' campaign. Inspired by the challenge, motivated to make a difference and fuelled by their bond as brothers, this is an incredible tale of what can be achieved with dedication, hard work and the will to do something bigger than oneself. As many of us begin to think about disconnecting from work over the summer to reconnect with our families and friends and spend some quality time together we would like to share with you the first in our upcoming series of Kearney Originals podcasts, which includes a remarkable story of team of adventurers taking on one of the most incredible challenges to support two charities close to their hearts. Season 1 features Justin Houlton, a Kearney employee from our London office, and three of his friends who, 18 months ago, decided they needed a new challenge. In this podcast the team explain how, unlike most people, the challenge they decided on was not a 5 km sponsored run in the local park or a baking challenge. The team decided that they would rather raise the bar a little higher and embark on a two-year training regimen that would ultimately conclude with them spending 40 days in an 8.5-m rowing boat navigating the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean. And nothing, not even a global pandemic, would stop them. The ultimate goal for this team, named appropriately “On Shoulders of Giants,” is to row the Atlantic as quickly as possible and win the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, while raising awareness and money for two infinitely important and under-resourced charities that support others in conquering their own challenges every day. Later this year, on December 12, this team of legends will take their place on the start line in the Canary Islands, Spain, and we will be following them every step of the way until they reach the finish line in Antigua. We hope that you will find this story that embodies passion, solidarity, generosity, curiosity, and boldness as inspirational as we did. So sit back and enjoy in the summer sunshine.

Up next in My Adventure Series I talk to Atlantic rower Caroline Wilson. As part of Team Status Row, Caroline and her two teammates rowed the 3000 miles west from La Gomera, Spain to English Harbour in Antigua as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. None of the women had ever rowed before they signed up. We talk all about the good, the disgusting, and what it takes to get a boat to the start line. Huge thanks to Dani Devine for filming and editing.

He was the first person to sail single-handed non-stop westwards around the world (1971), on a 59-foot boat called British Steel. Blyth was born in Hawick, Roxburghshire. He joined the British Army Parachute Regiment when he was 18 and was promoted to Sergeant at the age of 21. In 1966, while in the army, Blyth, together with Captain John Ridgway, rowed across the North Atlantic in a 20 ft open dory called English Rose III. After successfully completing this in 92 days, Blyth was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM). Rowing the Atlantic first became mainstream when the first Atlantic Rowing Race was launched by Sir Chay Blyth, after reflecting on his own ocean row that propelled him to international fame. This was the Port St. Charles, Barbados Atlantic Rowing Race. Thirty double-handed teams lined up at the start line in a "one design" rowing boat just outside Los Gigantes marina on Sunday 12 October 1997. The race was won by Kiwi Challenge, rowed by Rob Hamill and Phil Stubbs after 41 days at sea. Second place went to the French crew of Atlantik Challenge, Joseph Le Guen and his partner, a double convicted murderer, Pascal Blond. Fast forward to today. Terence Steinberg is preparing to compete in a 3,000 mile rowing race across the Atlantic. As you will hear he is doing this for the UWC (United World Colleges), which is a global movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. The movement began in 1962 when Atlantic College in Wales, UK admitted its first students. The Cold War raged and UWC set out to bring together young people from different nations to act as champions of peace through an education based on shared learning, collaboration, and understanding. UWC has since gained global recognition a catalyst for international understanding, and today teaches 3,000 college students each year in 17 locations on 4 continents. Students come from more than 155 countries, each selected for their demonstrated promise and potential. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge: The World’s Toughest Row. Video of the Week: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2017 - Race Promo Don't Fry Bacon Naked: Last week we discussed how to not get burned by getting your altitude acclimatization right. The example we were discussing was Bill had been at sea level for a week, came back to Colorado to do the Triple Bypass and felt a lack of fitness. How much of that was due to a loss of altitude acclimatization? How quickly to make an altitude acclimatization? http://www.bodyresults.com/e2deacc.asp According to Lawrence Armstrong, PhD, in his book, Performing in Extreme Environments (1), the rate of disappearance of the body’s adaptations to high altitude varies widely from person to person; just as it’s difficult to tell who exactly will experience signs of altitude illness, it’s hard to know how long your acclimatized state will last once you descend from high altitude. If you spend less than a day or two at altitude (say, on a moderate climb of a peak like Baker or Rainier, where most people return to sea level within 24 hours of reaching the summit), your body will not have had enough time to permanently adapt to the altitude. The composition of the blood changes after about 2 weeks of altitude exposure by producing more red blood cells and hemoglobin (the iron-protein compound that transports oxygen) (3) but most people climbing peaks in the Pacific Northwest are only exposed to elevation for about 3-4 days at a time. Training acclimatization time needs to be longer as the altitude becomes higher. Training for 14 days at or above 6,500 feet (as at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs) and 28 days at or above 8,000 feet are currently the best recommendations for athletes wishing to compete at similar elevations, while complete adaptation to the extreme altitude of 13,000 feet is possible after a continuous stay for 14 months (3). Obviously, climbers have a tiny fraction of this time open to them. One study cited by Armstrong indicates that the red blood cell volume of high-altitude natives (people who spend most of their lives above 7000 ft) decreases as quickly as ten days after spending time at sea level. Someone spending several hours to perhaps a day or two at altitude simply won’t have enough time for any long-lasting physiological changes. Those who choose to trek in Nepal, however, or participate in an expedition-type climb of a peak over 15,000 ft will have to spend a substantial amount of time adapting to the altitude in order to prevent altitude sickness. This is why climbers who gradually ascend their first peak in Alaska, Bolivia, Chile, or the Himalayas in order to get properly acclimatized can then speed up subsequent peaks, because the body’s ability to perform physical work at high altitude can persist for a few weeks (2). Through personal discussion with our African guide, cook, and porters on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and in talking with local Northwest guides and rangers who spend a lot of time on the mountains, we learned that they typically spend a week in the mountains above 10,000 ft and a week back home; their acclimatization and improved cardiovascular function may persist for several months after returning from altitude, and allows them to make subsequent trips quite easily without needing extra time to adapt. https://www2.palomar.edu/anthro/adapt/adapt_3.htm How quickly to lose altitude advantage? How does living at altitude affect how quickly you lose or gain altitude adaptations? https://www.princeton.edu/~oa/safety/altitude.html What is High Altitude? Altitude is defined on the following scale High (8,000 - 12,000 feet [2,438 - 3,658 meters]), Very High (12,000 - 18,000 feet [3,658 - 5,487 meters]), and Extremely High (18,000+ feet [5,500+ meters]). Since few people have been to such altitudes, it is hard to know who may be affected. There are no specific factors such as age, sex, or physical condition that correlate with susceptibility to altitude sickness. Some people get it and some people don't, and some people are more susceptible than others. Most people can go up to 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) with minimal effect. If you haven't been to high altitude before, it's important to be cautious. If you have been at that altitude before with no problem, you can probably return to that altitude without problems as long as you are properly acclimatized. What Causes Altitude Illnesses? The concentration of oxygen at sea level is about 21% and the barometric pressure averages 760 mmHg. As altitude increases, the concentration remains the same but the number of oxygen molecules per breath is reduced. At 12,000 feet (3,658 meters) the barometric pressure is only 483 mmHg, so there are roughly 40% fewer oxygen molecules per breath. In order to properly oxygenate the body, your breathing rate (even while at rest) has to increase. This extra ventilation increases the oxygen content in the blood, but not to sea level concentrations. Since the amount of oxygen required for activity is the same, the body must adjust to having less oxygen. In addition, for reasons not entirely understood, high altitude and lower air pressure causes fluid to leak from the capillaries which can cause fluid build-up in both the lungs and the brain. Continuing to higher altitudes without proper acclimatization can lead to potentially serious, even life-threatening illnesses. Acclimatization What is altitude illness? The major cause of altitude illnesses is going too high too fast. Given time, your body can adapt to the decrease in oxygen molecules at a specific altitude. This process is known as acclimatization and generally takes 1-3 days at that altitude. For example, if you hike to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), and spend several days at that altitude, your body acclimatizes to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). If you climb to 12,000 feet (3,658 meters), your body has to acclimatize once again. A number of changes take place in the body to allow it to operate with decreased oxygen. The depth of respiration increases. Pressure in pulmonary arteries is increased, "forcing" blood into portions of the lung which are normally not used during sea level breathing. The body produces more red blood cells to carry oxygen, The body produces more of a particular enzyme that facilitates the release of oxygen from hemoglobin to the body tissues. Are there genetic dispositions to altitude? There is considerable variability between individuals and between populations in their ability to adjust to the environmental stresses of high mountain regions. Usually, the populations that are most successful are those whose ancestors have lived at high altitudes for thousands of years. This is the case with some of the indigenous peoples living in the Andes Mountains of Peru and Bolivia as well as the Tibetans and Nepalese in the Himalaya Mountains. The ancestors of many people in each of these populations have lived above 13,000 feet (ca. 4000 meters) for at least 2,700 years. More from The Sports Gene by David Epstein in Chapter 14. I first spoke with Michelle Lee back in July, 2017 when she shared her goal to complete the world’s toughest nautical challenge; the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. A 5,300km / 2900 nautical mile solo, unassisted and self-supported ocean rowing event across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain all the way to Antigua in the Caribbean. (You can find that conversation here). In February 2019, Michelle achieved her goal and, in the process, became the first Australian woman to row across an ocean. Now there’s one key piece of information you need to know; Michelle did not come from a rowing background. At the time she set the goal, she had never pulled an oar through the water. In fact, when Michelle pulled out of the dock at the start of the race, she had never rowed in the open ocean (all her training had been confined to inside Sydney Heads). Wow! So in this week’s episode of Sparta Chicks Radio, Michelle rejoins me to share what’s happened in the last 18 months since we first spoke, as well as how this incredible race unfolded for her. After more than two months alone at sea, Tim Crockett finished his 3,200-mile solo row across the Atlantic Ocean last Wednesday by making landfall in Antigua in the Caribbean. Starting from the island of La Gomera off Africa’s northwestern coast on Dec. 12, Wednesday’s completion put his trek time at 63 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. A 48-year-old Royal Marine veteran, husband and father of two, Crockett had been one of only five solo rowers in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, an annual race across the Atlantic. Other participants in the challenge rowed in groups of two, three or four. Crockett placed second out of the solo teams, beaten only by 18-year old Lukas Haitzmann, who completed the event in 59 days, 8 hours and 22 minutes. Over the course of his excursion, Crockett celebrated Christmas and his birthday in his boat “Tame the Kraken,” a 24-foot, specially designed ocean rowboat specially designed to right itself if it capsizes in stormy weather. In a video posted Wednesday morning on the “Tame the Kraken” Facebook page, Crockett had told followers he was just under 12 miles away from harbor. “I may look like an Arctic explorer, but I’ve just been hit by some pretty nasty squalls,” Crockett said. “Hopefully we’re through the worst of that, we’ll get through these few final miles and it will be a fantastic welcome into Antigua.” The trek was Crockett’s effort to raise money for U.S. and British veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. He served 12 years in the Royal Marines, seeing action in the first Iraq war and doing drug interdiction work in the seas as a member of the United Kingdom’s Special Boat Service. The motivation for his journey, he previously told the MDJ, came when an old military buddy committed suicide. Crockett had initially set a goal of completing his trek in 50 days or less, but complicating the effort early on was an injury — he tweaked his knee on the second night of the marathon. Other roadblocks on the sea included mechanical and equipment failure, sunburns and extreme heat. Check out my interview with Tim from this past June and make sure you get over to his website and donate some money.
This week we have Tim Crockett. Here is an exert from this site and what he is doing. "My name is Tim Crockett and I’m going to row a 23ft boat, 'The Kraken', across the Atlantic ocean. I'm doing this for very good reason: as a holder of both American and British passports, and being a Special-Forces veteran, I am painfully aware that many US and UK soldiers are struggling with depression, anxiety, alienation and thoughts of suicide brought on by PTSD. The journey I face is my way to raise awareness, educate and to start connecting those who need help with those that are there to provide assistance. My pending journey is to take part in the 2018 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a race of more than 3,000 nautical miles from the Canary Islands to Antigua across the Atlantic Ocean. Considered by some to be one of the toughest challenges on earth. To put it into perspective, more people have scaled Everest or have journeyed into space than have rowed across the Atlantic. Even fewer have rowed it solo. While I’ll be alone in the Atlantic, I need your help to get me there and by doing so you will be helping many other tame their own personal 'Kraken'."
Tim Crockett has a strong Military background. As a UK Soldier who served in the Special Boat Service (SBS), he has spent most of his life on, under or near the water. He is going to draw heavily on this experience when he takes on his next challenge, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. This race is a 3000+ mile crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat. Tim will will do it alone in his 20 foot boat called, Tame The Kraken and raise money for soldiers struggling with PTSD. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. Tim Crockett is a veteran of the British Royal Marines and Special Boat Service with service in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, and various other international assignments. He then worked as a security consultant for various clients including Turner Broadcasting, Al Jazeera America, VICE, and CNN International. He was instrumental CNN’s acquisition of a VHS tape library that showed Al Qaeda’s chemical gas experiments, terrorist training tactics, and previously unseen images of Bin Laden and his top aides in Afghanistan. He currently works in travel risk management, and international medical, security, and travel assistance. Tim plans to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo and unassisted, which means he will not receive any resupply during the 3000 nautical mile journey. He will take part in an annual race called the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which has been going on for more than 20 years now. Tim will attempt this amazing feat of human physical and mental endurance at the end of this year in order to raise awareness for veteran suicide and promote the individual connections that truly make the difference for those struggling.
Michelle Lee is a quintessential ordinary Australian woman who has set out to do something extraordinary. In December 2017, she’ll attempt the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a 5,000km unassisted and self-supported ocean rowing event across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain to Antigua in the Caribbean. If she completes it, she’ll become the first Australian women to row across an ocean. But Michelle isn’t a rower and doesn’t come from a rowing background. So how does an ordinary everyday woman find the courage and bravery to attempt one of the world’s toughest nautical challenges as an absolute newbie in the sport? And what does it take to complete this event? I ask her in this episode.
7 Women - 7 Challenges came about back in October 2016 after discussions and feedback from the Tough Girl Tribe. It was decided as well as having inspirational interviews with the women who were the elite and the best of the best. I also wanted to connect and share the stores of; everyday women, real women, ordinary women, who are out their living full lives and saying yes to challenges and adventures. This would be a way to learn more about members of the Tribe and how they go about achieving their goals. I asked the tribe to put themselves forward with their challenges and goals for 2017 and we then took a public vote to shortlist potential women who we would be interviewing for the podcast. There were so many amazing entires it was a really difficult process to narrow it down and only select only 7! I’ve tried to be as fair as possible and have gone for a mixture of challenges and ages. On a side note, expect more interviews with member of the tribe on the Tough Girl Podcast EXTRA which comes out on an adhoc basis every Thursday at 7am UK time. Lets meet the 7 women! Georgie Akin Smith is doing 12 CHALLENGES IN 12 MONTHS! Georgie is 26 years old, living and working as a marketing manager in London. She loves being fit, active and getting outside as much as she can. Georgie has set herself 12 challenges which scare and excite her in equal measure and are all new things she hasn't tried before. She is booked in to to the Windsor Duathlon, the Engadin Cross Country Ski Marathon in Switzerland, as well as the London Marathon and the Mallorca 312! This is just an example of some of the challenges she will be completing in 2017! Rae Red is a new runner going after her first Ultra! In the late summer of 2016 after a fairly sustained period of life being crappy Rae was looking for something to help her with her own mental health. She started to consider running, but there were a whole host of reason to not start; she lives in a bad area, it’s not safe, she commutes for 4 hours a day so doesn't have time, she's not a runner, she has tight leg muscles, it’s too cold, it’s raining, it’s too hot.... Rae saw an article on ultra running and that was it, she signed up for the Dig Deep Ultra (30 miles). We will be following Rae on this journey to complete her first ultra! Gemma Smith is off to climb Kilimanjaro and also plans to climb both the Matterhorn and the Eiger! Almost two years ago she had a moment where she decided it's not worth being that person that says, 'that sounds fun but I could never do that'. Because of this change in attitude she started to believe she could do it. This resulted in a life changing trip to Everest Base Camp in 2015 which was booked on a complete whim! Even since then, subsequent trips have been booked which have included summiting Mont Blanc in June 2016 and Mt Toukbal in the High Atlas Mountains in late 2016. Rachel Wise is taking a gap year with her husband and 3 daughters and heading off to travel the world! The plan is to leave in August 2017 flying from Geneva to LA. Where they will do a road trip across the States from the West coast to the East coast. From there they will head down to the Caribbean and be based in St Lucia. In November they will fly to Sri Lanka for a couple of months. Then it's onto South East Asia where they plan to spend a chunk of time in Indonesia. They are also planning to head to New Zealand for a few weeks to see the family before going onto Fiji for two months. After that its time to head back to Switzerland via LA in the Summer of 2018. Laura Try - Rowing 1,800 miles around the coast of Great Britain, followed by rowing crossing the Atlantic in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge! Laura is 34 years old and lives in Brentwood, Essex. She works as a Personal Trainer and Event Organiser. In June and July 2017 Laura will taking part in the Rannoch GB Challenge, which invovles rowing 1,800 miles around the coast of Great Britain with a team of 5. The challenge will take place over 8 weeks and they will be raising money for the RNLI. On competing that, she plans to take part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December. She will be raising money for Centrepoint, the UK's largest charity for homeless 16-25 year olds. Jen Dykxhorn will be biking the iconic LEJOG - Lands End to John O'Groats, across the UK! Jen is a coffee-drinking, bicycle-loving, nature-loving, ukulele playing, adventure-seeking wanderer! She is a 30-year-old Canadian living (mostly) in London, UK while working on her PhD in psychiatric epidemiology. In the summer of 2017, Jen will be biking the iconic LEJOG - with her sister. They will be leaving (approx) August 21st and be arriving in the north of Scotland around the 5th of September. Along the way, they will be wild camping (in home-sewn bivy sacks!). To finish off the adventure, they will be completing the Coast to Coast adventure race, and have signed up to do the "expert" course (all 105 miles of biking, trail running, and kayaking in one day). Jo Jo Rogers at 52 will be training and racing in an effort to be selected for the US 50km National Team! Jo Jo is a passionate runner and she loves to train. She is out running every day, sometimes twice a day! For Jo Jo this is an opportunity to share her story but more so to encourage other women to get out there and go after their dreams, no matter their age. Feeling inspired week after week? We love an adventure; wether it's climbing glaciers, Mountain biking across deserts, or just exploring our own backyards. Seeking adventures like these are a great way to switch-off from the world, close-out the triathlon noise, but most importantly: have fun and grow! Today Kristian chats with the guys from IGO Adventures. Never heard of it? What is it? Well Bobby sums it up perfectly here: IGO was born as an idea when I completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. After a life-changing 48 days at sea, the euphoria of the finish was powerful. I believe everyone should experience that feeling and have it as frequently as possible. Therefore, I was determined to answer the question: If I bottled the adrenaline and emotions I felt upon seeing Antigua after 2 months of rowing, how can I give that ‘adventure ecstasy’ to people who only have a week to spare? The answer is IGO. - Bobby Melville – Founder In today’s episode, we discuss: What is IGO Adventures The DNA that makes these events high on the bucket list The world records and how IGO came about The events on offer Show Links Join (for Free) our TRISPECIFIC CAFE https://www.facebook.com/TriSpecifichttp://www.instagram.com/trispecific http://www.twitter.com/trispecific http://igoadventures.com Show Sponsor: Revbox Hands down the most potent indoor cycling trainer you can invest in.
