Steve Gunn dropped by the shop in January of 2022 to tell us a story about how he had his guitar stolen in Russia. He also performed the song “Morning River” from his album “Other You” on one of the Kelly Guitars in the shop. Featuring music from Steve GunnTheme music by Freaky Wilderness
One of the marks of a dedicated and accomplished artist is that they continue to level up, testing their own limits and working to break out of habits and patterns. New York-based guitarist, singer/songwriter, and collaborator Steve Gunn is such a one; he can tap into Indian classical modes, inhabit the drone of minimalist founding father La Monte Young, pick like fingerstyle players Jack Rose and John Fahey, and coax the reclusive Japanese folk legend, guitarist and songwriter Sachiko Kanenobu, back to playing (NY Times.) In Gunn's songs -which float between the worlds of Philadelphia soul, British folk, DC punk, and the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra with ease- one finds unexpected chromatic lyricism, and keen lyric observations. He's also done several challenging collaborations with a head-spinningly wide range of musical colleagues (Mary Lattimore, John Trusinski, Bridget St John, Mdou Moctar, Bing &Ruth, Kim Gordon, Kurt Vile) and continues to step outside of music into the worlds of film, line drawings, sculpture, or podcasts, in order to prevent tunnel vision (gathered from ToneGlow.substack.com.) The ace guitarist and fingerstyle folk rocker Steve Gunn plays recent songs from Other You and its companion EP, Nakama, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Fulton”, “Morning River”, “On the Way” Watch "Fulton": Watch "Morning River": Watch "On The Way":
Does it feel like you've become a magnet to every emotionally unavailable, commitment-phobic person in the dating pool? Have you been blaming it on this generation's idea of dating, the fickleness of dating apps, or just about any other excuse you can come up with? Bad news: it's none of those things. It's you. Ultimately, it's not that we're attracting emotionally unavailable partners…it's that we're making ourselves available to them. We're looking for the first thing that crosses our path, whether that person is truly in alignment with what we consciously desire or not, because our unconscious desires are actually the ones running the show. How do you escape this cycle? Good news: as always, I'm here to tell you what you need to hear, even if it's not what you want to hear. Listen now to find out how to find the partnership you truly want. CONNECT WITH BEATRICE: Be sure to connect with me more on Instagram @theselflovefix. Shadow work: it's a term you've probably heard before. But what is it, and why does everyone seem to be talking about it? Take out your flashlight, friends, because today I'm taking you on a journey into all the shadowy, invisible parts of your personality. Shadow work is all about turning the unconscious conscious, which means taking a look at some things you might've shoved so far down that you've forgotten they even existed…or maybe you're hoping they'll disappear if you don't look too closely at them. Shadow work isn't scary; in fact, it's an amazing, AMAZING tool for improving your self-image, your relationships, and your patience with yourself. But it can be emotional…and it can actually be harmful if done without the right guidance. Let me tell you what shadow work actually is, and what you need to do to get started. You'd be hard-pressed to find a musician as prolific and enigmatic as Steve Gunn. The New-York-based singer, songwriter and guitarist has managed more than 20 releases in the past 15 years, including collaborations with Kurt Vile, Hiss Golden Messenger, Ryley Walker and more. Each new album, EP and split finds Gunn venturing into new and unfamiliar territory and demonstrating his continued growth and evolution as an artist. His latest, Other You — which came out on Matador Records this past summer — is no exception, with an uncharacteristically bright sound and an aura of optimism that's present in the album's 11 tracks. Before setting out on a co-headlining tour with Jeff Parker (which includes a Dec. 4 stop at Cactus Club in Milwaukee), Gunn spent some time telling My First Band host Tyler Maas about the process of making Other You, his excitement to be back on the road and playing solo shows, and what's in store for him next year. Along the way, Gunn spoke about growing up a few miles outside of Philadelphia, the role nearby college radio stations and independent record stores had on his musical taste, and spending his teens and 20s exploring New York and other East Coast hubs in search of new and unfamiliar live music experiences. Before episode's end, Gunn also talked about taking guitar lessons, playing in a project called GHQ and briefly being part of Vile's backing band, The Violators. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Steve Gunn ("Fulton").
Jonathan Ammons talks with indie guitarist and songwriter Steve Gunn. What's your biggest fear as a concertgoer? For Steve, it's having to do a Number 2 at a show — even nice venues with good toilets seem like a terrible place to spend any significant amount of time. This is perhaps the exact thought that went through the head of the person who had an unfortunate bowel movement in the mosh pit at a Turnstile show last week. Will people now feel empowered to do the same at upcoming Turnstile shows, like how Barenaked Ladies got Kraft mac and cheese thrown at them? The meat of this week's episode comes in the form of a discussion about Donda, the oft-discussed, perhaps anticipated new album from Kanye West. The thing about Kanye is that the music media once gave him the benefit of the doubt, and now they don't. Nonetheless, like everything Kanye does these days, Donda has this huge gravitational pull, yet it feels somewhat marooned from what's actually happening at large, with a narrative set almost entirely on planet Kanye. There'ss callbacks to some Yeezus and 808s-style electronic music, a lot of Jesus (the curses are bleeped out!), but rather than create trends, it turns away from them. Donda just sucks all the air out of the room.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging Jail Socks, who just released the new album Coming Down while Steve wants to spread the good word about Other You, the latest LP from indie guitar god Steve Gunn. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. I know from the emails and messages that I've received that many of you are parents, teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends of young people. Well, this episode is for all of you. In this episode of the Backyard Ecology podcast, we talk with Heather L. Montgomery. Heather is an award-winning author, educator, and someone I'm honored to call a friend. Her books include: Bugs Don't Hug: Six-Legged Parents and Their Kids, How Rude! Real Bugs Who Won't Mind Their Manners, Something Rotten: A Fresh Look at Roadkill, and Who Gives a Poop?: Surprising Science from One End to the Other. Her newest book, What's in Your Pocket?: Collecting Nature's Treasures, will come out in September 2021. As you'll quickly discover in this episode, Heather is an amazing storyteller who is passionate about engaging people, especially young people, in nature. Like me, she is also a big kid at heart. Our conversation covers a wide variety of topics including ways to engage young people in nature, but the theme that carries through all those topics is curiosity. Heather and I both believe that encouraging young people to be curious can help them throughout their lives, no matter what career path they end up taking. It's also just fun to be curious and see where a question takes us – no matter what our age is. There are still a few seats available. Find out more information here: https://www.mindsetenterprise.net/students/teamtriad On to Microcast Monday. If you are pissed off or irritated and no one wants to be around you, I want you to do one thing. I want you to think about the OTHER YOU. Let me explain. I want you to think about a time when you were happy and content, and I want you to tap into that feeling and remember how you felt. As we all know there are peaks and valleys in a criminal justice career and personally I stayed in a valley for many years of my career until I shifted my mindset. I started doing things that made me happier. I started taking care of myself better, starting reading better things and started associating with people who lifted me up instead of keeping me down. I want you to do the same. I know the job can and often wears on you, but you don't have to let that consume you all the time. Shift your mindset for the better and your life will change for the better. Stay tuned for more great episodes on The CJEvolution Podcast. www.cjevolution.com Patrick
