Stay connected with us at americangroundradio.com, on Facebook, and Instagram. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for May 13, 2026. We open with the China story that keeps getting bigger — the day after we covered the Arcadia, California mayor who pleaded guilty to acting as a Chinese Communist Party agent, a man named Lou John Wang was convicted in New York City for operating a secret Chinese police station — kidnapping dissidents, pressuring critics of the CCP, and running what amounts to a foreign government's law enforcement operation on American soil. We connect it to Trump and Rubio's diplomatic trip to Beijing, explain what China's secret police stations actually do, and make the case that China's infiltration of American life — through supply chains, universities, real estate near military bases, and now city halls and police stations — is unlike anything any hostile nation has ever accomplished inside our borders. We ask the question every American should be asking — how much access has the Chinese Communist Party already built while we were telling ourselves economics and national security were separate conversations? In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, President Trump landed in Beijing with a delegation that included Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wang — arriving to a red carpet welcome and plans to push for Chinese market access for U.S. businesses. Then the U.S. Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh as the next chair of the Federal Reserve on a 54-45 vote — with Democrat John Fetterman the only crossover — signaling future interest rate cuts that sent equity markets surging. And Salem Communications — home to Hugh Hewitt, Joe Piscopo, Charlie Kirk, Mike Gallagher, and American Ground Radio partnerships in New York, D.C., and the Salem Podcast Network — has been acquired by Waterstone in a deal CEO David Santrella says will accelerate the company's faith-forward mission for years to come. Our American Mama Teri Netterville joins us to talk about country singer Eric Church's commencement speech at North Carolina — which she calls the single greatest commencement speech she has ever heard. Using the six strings of a guitar as his framework, Church walked graduates through faith as the foundational low E string, family as the A string, their life partner as the D string at the heart of the instrument, ambition and resilience on the G string, community on the B string — where he urged graduates to put down roots, volunteer, and build the thing their community needs even if the internet never sees it — and individual greatness on the high E string, the thinnest string most easily bent by outside pressure. We walk through every string and explain why this speech deserves to be heard by every graduating class in America. We dig deep into a new Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth report called From Learning Recession to Learning Recovery — which identifies a nationwide decline in student achievement in math and reading that began in 2013 and was just as severe before the pandemic as during it. The researchers blame social media. We disagree. We connect the timeline directly to Common Core — the untested, nationally imposed educational standards pushed by the Gates Foundation and adopted by 46 states by 2013 — that confused children, baffled parents who could no longer help with math homework, and produced exactly the results you'd expect from conducting a nationwide experiment on children with no prior testing. And we note that Louisiana — which abandoned Common Core's methodology and adopted the Science of Reading — now leads the nation in educational improvement. We also cover the DOJ's settlement with PayPal over their $530 million Economic Opportunity Fund — a 2020 program that tied eligibility explicitly to race and national origin in violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. We make the case that you cannot achieve fairness by creating an unfair system, and that civil rights laws were designed to stop discrimination — not rebrand it. We also dig into Senator Tommy Tuberville's proposal to establish English as the official language of American schools — and make the case that a shared language is not about race, it's about unity, assimilation, and the Tower of Babel. For our Bright Spot, a Marine veteran with a concealed carry permit in Massachusetts was already going car to car helping people escape and exchanging fire with an active shooter on Memorial Drive in Cambridge before police arrived. The shooter — who had previously been given half the recommended prison sentence for shooting at cops in 2020 — was stopped before anyone was killed. Nobody's covering this story. We are. We also note that Rudy Giuliani has recovered from pneumonia, left the hospital after being on a ventilator and in the ICU, and remind listeners that God is not finished with us until He says so. And we close with Logan, Cody, and Brody — three high schoolers in Cooper City, Florida who pulled over to help a man they thought had a flat tire and discovered he was having a heart attack. They called 911. Emergency crews arrived. Diego survived. His son said, God didn't send angels with wings. He sent those boys. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. //The Wire//2300Z May 11, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: MASS SHOOTING REPORTED IN CAMBRIDGE. DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS TO END THE UKRAINE WAR CONTINUE. NO CHANGE TO SITUATION IN MIDDLE EAST.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Europe: Following the Victory Day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, increased focus has been placed on ending the war. During the various VE Day celebrations and speeches, President Putin stated that he is willing to hold direct negotiations with Ukraine's Zelenskyy to seek a direct settlement to the war.Analyst Comment: Until a document is signed by all parties, this is just talk. However, this is the first time that Putin has indicated that he is willing to directly engage with Ukrainian leadership regarding a peace deal. The next stage would be for more direct talks to be scheduled at some point, now that the very basic starting point of negotiations seem to be within the realm of reason by both sides. Time will tell, though.-HomeFront-Massachusetts: This afternoon a shooting was reported in Cambridge near the intersection of River Street and Memorial Drive. One suspect (who has not yet been identified) reportedly engaged passing cars with a rifle, targeting vehicles seemingly at random. The suspect was eventually engaged by police, which resulted in a small skirmish in the street. Eventually, the suspect was either apprehended or neutralized by police, bringing an end to the attack. During the engagement, two individuals were reportedly wounded, though this is a developing situation at the time of this report and details are hard to verify. More information is expected to follow this evening.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The situation in the Middle East remains largely unchanged over the past 48 hours. Targeting efforts on all sides remain challenging to geolocate, as all belligerents are waging lower-level warfare and pretending as if munitions are not being exchanged. Merchant vessels (transiting the Strait either inbound or outbound) continue to be attacked by the Iranians, and the United States continues to strike Iranian gunboats sporadically. Overnight, one vessel was struck by unidentified projectile off the coast of Qatar, marking the first targeting effort this far from the Strait in a month, reminding the world that the entire Persian Gulf is an active warzone, not just the Strait itself. Within mainland Iran, explosions have been reported throughout the country over the weekend, from Qeshm Island, to the old reactor complex in Arak. Locals often don't provide much context for the incidents they observe, and counting exact engagements and munitions is very challenging due to many of these engagements also taking place on the high seas. However over the past few days a handful of targeting efforts have taken place, possibly as many as a couple of dozen incidents all total. More strategically, the hard to predict nature of the conflict has kept most western-aligned merchant traffic from attempting the transit. The only way for a merchant to clear the Strait without getting targeted by the Iranians, is to follow the Iranian instructions for passage. And if a merchant does just that, there's no guarantee that the Americans will allow them through their blockade anyway. The end result is prolonging the conflict, fuel prices climbing higher, with no talks or diplomatic efforts yielding any results.Analyst: S2A1 Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground Disclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report. //END REPORT//

When 80,000 people descend on an event, somebody has made it look effortless. Wayne Taylor has spent three decades being that somebody, from the Sydney 2000 Olympics to Wimbledon, Formula One on three continents, and right here in Adelaide at the Clipsal 500. His company, First Facilities Group, now brings that same discipline to commercial and residential properties (and events) across Adelaide. There is no SA Drink of the Week this episode, but Wayne does weigh in on the relative merits of beer events versus wine events versus spirit events, and the answer is exactly what you would expect from a man who has cleaned up after all three. Running Sheet: Gather Round To Learn About Major Events 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week There is no SA Drink Of The Week this week. 00:02:17 Wayne Taylor, First Facilities Group Right now, as Gather Round unfolds across South Australia, tens of thousands of people are doing what they always do at a footy match: finding a seat, grabbing a pie, visiting the loo, and not once thinking about any of it. That invisibility is because someone’s doing their job brilliantly. Wayne Taylor has spent the better part of three decades making sure that when 80,000 people descend on an event, the wheels don’t fall off. He’s done it at the Sydney Olympics. At Wimbledon. At Formula One races on three continents. At Clipsal 500 when 200 staff, 15 supervisors and a $300,000 budget had to deliver a spotless result across four days. And he’s done it right here in Adelaide, quietly, at events you almost certainly attended. He now runs First Facilities Group, bringing that same discipline to commercial and residential properties across Adelaide. Wayne Taylor has a habit most of us would find exhausting. Every time he walks into a building, he is quietly checking the mirrors, the bins, the general state of things. It is not fussiness. It is decades of conditioning that started when his parents cleaned Memorial Drive as a boy from Broken Hill, and he mostly just got in the way by raiding the office stationery drawers. That origin story matters because the values Wayne brings to First Facilities Group now, respect, honesty, and an obsessive eye for what others walk past, were baked in early. As he puts it, “If you can’t get your housekeeping correct, how can you then operate your business?” It is a lens that applies equally to a gleaming corporate lobby and to the pit lane at Albert Park. The stories from his career read like an event passport. At the Sydney Olympics he managed 1,100 staff, set an 80% minimum recycling target, and navigated vehicle bomb checks just to get to work each morning. At Wimbledon, he learned that a single cigarette butt on the ground was enough to earn a conversation with the CEO, and that some corporate boxes were quietly serving spirits in coffee cups because you cannot legally drink alcohol watching football in England. At Formula One, a certain unnamed driver, “Mansell,” parked his car next to the waste compactor despite clear signage, and paid for it when a bin tipped onto the vehicle. Wayne watched from the level above and, eventually, laughed. The Clipsal 500 holds a particular place in his story. He worked it for twelve years and is clear-eyed about what it meant to Adelaide after the Grand Prix left in 1995: “The place went dead.” The Clipsal helped rebuild that. His team delivered the best margin in the company that year not through corner-cutting but through relentless post-event debriefs, 4am starts, and crews walking the entire circuit in a line with headlamps, because the lighting was never quite good enough. One of the sharper insights in this conversation is about the people who do this work. Wayne keeps what he calls a little Bible, a list of standout workers from each event. The good ones get taken to lunch, thanked properly, and connected to the next opportunity, whether that is the Grand Prix in Melbourne or something interstate. It is empathetic at a human level, and it also happens to be smart: one well-led supervisor with 20 people will outperform a rabble of 50. His principles for First Facilities Group are unchanged: respect, honesty, punctuality, and a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. He once disciplined his own teenage son for repeated lateness in front of the whole crew, because anything less would have been unfair to everyone else. That is the standard he holds himself to and expects from others. 01:08:34 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Steve Davis & The Virtualosos‘ new song, Cellar Door Shuffle. This song is a love letter to the ritual of winery visits across South Australia, from the Hills to Barossa, McLaren Vale to the Clare. Wayne is still in the room for this one, and Steve uses it to draw a neat contrast from the week’s main themes: beer events are loud, spirit events are rough, wine events are, as Wayne says, “a little more sophisticated.” The song will also feature in the History Hit Parade show with Keith Conlon at the Mercury Cinema. It’s on Monday, May 11, 11am, and Sunday, May 17, at 4pm and it will simply be an enjoyable show of historical anecdotes, fun, and music.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a very special episode of the New Books Network, as the editor of Conversations with Kiese Laymon (UP of Mississippi, 2025), Dr. Constance Bailey, discusses the process of selecting, compiling, and publishing the volume with the subject himself, award-winning author, Kiese Laymon. Conversations with Kiese Laymon provides an in-depth look at Laymon as an educator, creative writer, activist, family member, and Mississippian. Interviews capture surprising insights into Laymon's life and craft. Within the book's pages, Laymon talks about his engagement with other writers, including Richard Wright, William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty. These revelations situate his memoir, Heavy, among other great Mississippi autobiographies and memoirs, such as Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi, Welty's One Writer's Beginnings, Jesmyn Ward's Men We Reaped, and Natasha Trethewey's Memorial Drive. In other interviews, he discusses his obsession with revision and deftly fields questions about pop culture, politics, and Black masculinity, along with a host of other pressing contemporary issues. As the first collection of its kind, Conversations with Kiese Laymon serves as the perfect introduction to studying Laymon. The cross section of interviews included reflects Laymon's humility, while simultaneously celebrating his accomplishments. Most importantly, the interviews reflect his stature as a major American literary figure. With topics ranging from hip-hop and family to politics and everything in between, Conversations provides an unfiltered look at the prolific Southern writer in his own words. ✦ Brunching in Atlanta is practically a sport, and many of us don't know how to play. There are strategies involved—arrive early to beat the rush of a crowd, or maybe you're a diner that prefers to make reservations. BUT in this economy, who has the money to drop $80 to $100 on breakfast food and drinks every weekend? In our new mini-series, "Brunchin' on a Budget," we look at several delicious AND affordable brunch spots in Atlanta. On today's installment of "Brunchin' on a Budget," WABE Arts Reporter Summer Evans heads to Memorial Drive to highlight Homegrown. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes House in the Park, The Atlanta Black Theater Festival, and a preview of Dragon Con. ✦ Dee Dee Bridgewater embodies jazz. She takes jazz standards and makes them her own while being true to the original composition. This is something she's done before and since releasing her debut album in 1974. No stranger to Atlanta, Ms. Bridgewater returns to the Rialto Center for the Arts on September 6 to the delight of all. Ahead of her concert, City Lights Collective Co-Host Jon Goode sat down with Ms. Bridgewater to discuss her new album, her return to Atlanta, and to share a laugh or three. ✦ Get ready for some cinematic chaos, VHS Deathmatch is coming to Monday Night Garage on September 26th. Part screening, part comedy showdown, the event takes the best (and worst) of B-movie VHS tapes and pits them head-to-head for ultimate bragging rights. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane spoke with organizer Kristopher Bolz about the madness audiences can expect at the Deathmatch. ✦ Kosmo Vinyl is a visual artist and lifelong music lover. He bought his first LP when he was just nine years old and went on to spend decades immersed in the world of music. He got his start at London's groundbreaking indie label Stiff Records, and in 1979, he began working exclusively with The Clash—staying with the band until they disbanded in 1986. Today, Kosmo's legendary record collection fuels his social media series Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week, and he joins us every Wednesday to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, he tells us the story behind Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 hit, "Born on the Bayou." ✦ Ebony magazine debuted in 1945 and quickly became an inspiring celebration of Black life, culture, and achievement. The monthly magazine thrived for over seven decades, and within its pages lived the iconic column, "Fashion Fair," created by Eunice W. Johnson. "Mrs. Johnson," as all reverently called her, is the subject of the children's book, "Miles of Style," Eunice W. Johnson and the Ebony Fashion Fair." The book is the first by Atlanta author Lisa D. Brathwaite, and when City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes spoke with the author last year, Brathwaite explained how she first learned about Mrs. Johnson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A woman's husband goes up to the attic to retrieve something and down comes…a different husband. Wouldn't we all sometimes like to exchange the husband we have for a better, newer, or just different model? Holly turned this idea into a novel that is both funny and thoughtfully considered. It may not, in fact, be such a great thing to have an endless supply of potential husbands so easy to exchange.  Her book has been optioned by Apple Plus for a limited series and I just saw that Juno Temple, the actress who played Keeley in the Ted Lasso series, is slated to play the starring role.   And because it is April, and April is National Poetry Month, we're discussing books related to poets. Not everyone loves poetry, but these books aren't actually poetry–so you can still partake of poetry month. They are historical fiction, memoirs, essays, and children's books written by or inspired by poets.    Books Mentioned in This Episode:   1- The Husbands by Holly Gramazio   2- Lakewood by Megan Giddings   3- I Used to Live Here Once: The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys by Miranda Seymour   4- Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys     5- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte     6- The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay     7- Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line by Elizabeth Lovett     8- Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin     9-  A Five Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover  Chelsea @2_girls_bookin_it - The Endless Fall by Emmerson Hoyt     10- The Swan's Nest by Laura Mcneal     11- You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith     12- Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethaway     13- Emily's House by Amy Belding Brown     14- Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome     15- Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     16- World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     17- The Poet's Dog by Patricia McLachlan     Media mentioned-- 1- Severance (Apple+, 2022 - Present)   2- Reduced Shakespeare Company--https://www.reducedshakespeare.com   3- Saint X (Hulu, 2023)

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for August 13th   Publish Date:  August 13th    Commercial: From the BG AD GROUP Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, August 13th and Happy 54th Birthday to MLB Player Mark Lemke. ***08.13.24 – BIRTHDAY – MARK LEMKE*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board Police say Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests Suspect's Record Revealed in Officer-Involved Shooting   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1:  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board The Cobb Elections Board approved two potential schedules for special elections to fill the District 2 and District 4 seats on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. The exact schedule depends on whether a December runoff occurs for the November general elections. If no runoff is needed, primaries would be held on February 11, 2025, with the general election on April 29, 2025. If a December runoff does happen, primaries would move to March 18, 2025, and the general election to June 17, 2025. This decision follows a legal dispute over a home rule map that led to the cancellation of previous primaries and general elections for these seats. Commissioner Jerica Richardson's and Commissioner Monique Sheffield's terms end on December 31. STORY 2:    Police: Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests State Rep. Devan Seabaugh, R-Marietta, was arrested for DUI Thursday night after a crash involving a cyclist on Memorial Drive in Atlanta. Seabaugh, who refused sobriety and breath tests, denies being intoxicated, claiming he had only one beer hours earlier. A GSP report noted he exhibited signs of intoxication and was unsteady. The cyclist suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was hit. Seabaugh, driving with three other passengers including fellow state reps, faces multiple charges. His case will be heard on September 4. Refusal to take sobriety tests may lead to a license suspension under Georgia's implied consent law. STORY 3:  Police Share Record of Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting Nathain Jenkins, 32, of Valdosta, was shot and killed by Cobb police at a Smyrna Walgreens on Friday evening during an altercation. Jenkins, who was armed, had multiple outstanding warrants from Lowndes and Fulton counties. Authorities are investigating a possible link between Jenkins and a previous vehicle pursuit that occurred weeks earlier. Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer confirmed the officers involved have been placed on leave and expressed condolences. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and is seeking witnesses.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE – COBB INTERNATIONAL FAIR STORY 4:  Cobb Eyes $87.5 Million Payout to Cities for Services The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is set to vote on a new Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) agreement that would provide $87.5 million to six cities over the next decade. The agreement would start with the cities splitting $6.5 million in the first year, increasing by $500,000 annually. This comes after a dispute over reimbursement for essential services led to mediation between the county and cities. The agreement must be approved by the commission and all six city councils by October 31 to avoid state sanctions affecting grants and permits. STORY 5:  Man Indicted in Slaying of KSU Student Samuel El Harris, 21, has been indicted on murder charges by a Cobb County grand jury in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Alasia Franklin at Kennesaw State University on May 18. Harris faces charges including felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. The shooting occurred after a dispute outside the Austin Residence Complex. Harris, Franklin's ex-boyfriend, is accused of hiding her cellphone and car after the crime. Franklin, a KSU student government senator, was remembered for her dedication and service. Harris remains in Cobb County Jail without bond. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: INGLES 7 STORY 6:   Bounce for Pounce Scores for Cat Rescue Efforts Pounce de Leon hosted its “Bounce for Pounce” tennis tournament at Lost Mountain Tennis Center on August 11, raising funds for their cat rescue group. Twenty-four players competed, with James Smith and Kim Keller emerging as top scorers, winning prizes organized by Lisa Gardner. Pounce de Leon rescues homeless and abandoned cats, working with Petco stores and 50 foster homes across Atlanta. Since its founding in 2023, the group has adopted 192 cats and provided trap-neuter-release services for 250 cats. The event, supported by Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco, contributes to addressing cat overpopulation in Georgia. STORY 7:     Motorcyclist Killed in Maxham Road Collision Alejandro Garcia-Zavala, 26, was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Austell, Cobb Police report. Riding a 2016 Honda CBR 650 southbound on Maxham Road, Garcia-Zavala lost control near Pontiac Circle around 10:36 p.m., striking a curb and guardrail before being ejected into a creek. The motorcycle came to a stop in the median. Garcia-Zavala was pronounced dead at the scene. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.
