A woman's husband goes up to the attic to retrieve something and down comes…a different husband. Wouldn't we all sometimes like to exchange the husband we have for a better, newer, or just different model? Holly turned this idea into a novel that is both funny and thoughtfully considered. It may not, in fact, be such a great thing to have an endless supply of potential husbands so easy to exchange.  Her book has been optioned by Apple Plus for a limited series and I just saw that Juno Temple, the actress who played Keeley in the Ted Lasso series, is slated to play the starring role.   And because it is April, and April is National Poetry Month, we're discussing books related to poets. Not everyone loves poetry, but these books aren't actually poetry–so you can still partake of poetry month. They are historical fiction, memoirs, essays, and children's books written by or inspired by poets.    Books Mentioned in This Episode:   1- The Husbands by Holly Gramazio   2- Lakewood by Megan Giddings   3- I Used to Live Here Once: The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys by Miranda Seymour   4- Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys     5- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte     6- The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay     7- Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line by Elizabeth Lovett     8- Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin     9-  A Five Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover  Chelsea @2_girls_bookin_it - The Endless Fall by Emmerson Hoyt     10- The Swan's Nest by Laura Mcneal     11- You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith     12- Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethaway     13- Emily's House by Amy Belding Brown     14- Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome     15- Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     16- World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     17- The Poet's Dog by Patricia McLachlan     Media mentioned-- 1- Severance (Apple+, 2022 - Present)   2- Reduced Shakespeare Company--https://www.reducedshakespeare.com   3- Saint X (Hulu, 2023)

They have been proven to improve the flow of traffic and reduce accidents. But wherever they are built, they seem to cause stress for drivers. The Town of Gander is building its first roundabout at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Cooper Boulevard. Percy Farwell is the mayor of Gander.

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for August 13th   Publish Date:  August 13th    Commercial: From the BG AD GROUP Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, August 13th and Happy 54th Birthday to MLB Player Mark Lemke. ***08.13.24 – BIRTHDAY – MARK LEMKE*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board Police say Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests Suspect's Record Revealed in Officer-Involved Shooting   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1:  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board The Cobb Elections Board approved two potential schedules for special elections to fill the District 2 and District 4 seats on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. The exact schedule depends on whether a December runoff occurs for the November general elections. If no runoff is needed, primaries would be held on February 11, 2025, with the general election on April 29, 2025. If a December runoff does happen, primaries would move to March 18, 2025, and the general election to June 17, 2025. This decision follows a legal dispute over a home rule map that led to the cancellation of previous primaries and general elections for these seats. Commissioner Jerica Richardson's and Commissioner Monique Sheffield's terms end on December 31. STORY 2:    Police: Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests State Rep. Devan Seabaugh, R-Marietta, was arrested for DUI Thursday night after a crash involving a cyclist on Memorial Drive in Atlanta. Seabaugh, who refused sobriety and breath tests, denies being intoxicated, claiming he had only one beer hours earlier. A GSP report noted he exhibited signs of intoxication and was unsteady. The cyclist suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was hit. Seabaugh, driving with three other passengers including fellow state reps, faces multiple charges. His case will be heard on September 4. Refusal to take sobriety tests may lead to a license suspension under Georgia's implied consent law. STORY 3:  Police Share Record of Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting Nathain Jenkins, 32, of Valdosta, was shot and killed by Cobb police at a Smyrna Walgreens on Friday evening during an altercation. Jenkins, who was armed, had multiple outstanding warrants from Lowndes and Fulton counties. Authorities are investigating a possible link between Jenkins and a previous vehicle pursuit that occurred weeks earlier. Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer confirmed the officers involved have been placed on leave and expressed condolences. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and is seeking witnesses.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE – COBB INTERNATIONAL FAIR STORY 4:  Cobb Eyes $87.5 Million Payout to Cities for Services The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is set to vote on a new Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) agreement that would provide $87.5 million to six cities over the next decade. The agreement would start with the cities splitting $6.5 million in the first year, increasing by $500,000 annually. This comes after a dispute over reimbursement for essential services led to mediation between the county and cities. The agreement must be approved by the commission and all six city councils by October 31 to avoid state sanctions affecting grants and permits. STORY 5:  Man Indicted in Slaying of KSU Student Samuel El Harris, 21, has been indicted on murder charges by a Cobb County grand jury in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Alasia Franklin at Kennesaw State University on May 18. Harris faces charges including felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. The shooting occurred after a dispute outside the Austin Residence Complex. Harris, Franklin's ex-boyfriend, is accused of hiding her cellphone and car after the crime. Franklin, a KSU student government senator, was remembered for her dedication and service. Harris remains in Cobb County Jail without bond. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: INGLES 7 STORY 6:   Bounce for Pounce Scores for Cat Rescue Efforts Pounce de Leon hosted its “Bounce for Pounce” tennis tournament at Lost Mountain Tennis Center on August 11, raising funds for their cat rescue group. Twenty-four players competed, with James Smith and Kim Keller emerging as top scorers, winning prizes organized by Lisa Gardner. Pounce de Leon rescues homeless and abandoned cats, working with Petco stores and 50 foster homes across Atlanta. Since its founding in 2023, the group has adopted 192 cats and provided trap-neuter-release services for 250 cats. The event, supported by Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco, contributes to addressing cat overpopulation in Georgia. STORY 7:     Motorcyclist Killed in Maxham Road Collision Alejandro Garcia-Zavala, 26, was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Austell, Cobb Police report. Riding a 2016 Honda CBR 650 southbound on Maxham Road, Garcia-Zavala lost control near Pontiac Circle around 10:36 p.m., striking a curb and guardrail before being ejected into a creek. The motorcycle came to a stop in the median. Garcia-Zavala was pronounced dead at the scene. Cobb County Police are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.       Break: Marietta Theater – COBB INTERNATIONAL FAIR   Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. The low will drop down to 35 degrees, with clear skies. The National Weather Service projects sunny skies and highs in the 60s for much of the rest of the week.Pharmacies across Iowa have closed at an alarming rate over the past decade-plus, partly because insurance payouts don't cover drug costs.Nearly 100 pharmacies across the state have shut their doors since 2008, according to research from a Drake University professor in a recent study. And it's still an issue. A survey last month conducted by the Iowa Pharmacy Association of its members found 40 percent of responding pharmacies expect to close within the next 12 months.Pharmacists, lawmakers, policy experts and patient advocates say pharmacy benefit managers are largely to blame.Pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, are third party companies that function as intermediaries between insurance providers and drug manufacturers.Mike Deninger is a co-owner and pharmacist at Towncrest Pharmacy. The group collectively owns eight community pharmacies in Iowa City, Solon, Van Horne, Marengo, Belle Plaine and New Hampton.Independent pharmacies like his rely on PBMs so that they can take various insurance plans, but those companies also decide how much money the pharmacists receive when reimbursing them.“They will pay us whatever they feel like paying us, and it can change at any given time,” he said.Iowa Republican U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and colleagues this week introduced a bipartisan proposal that would tackle practices used by pharmacy benefit managers that drive up costs for prescription medications. The bill would use a flat fee to compensate PBMs instead of pegging payments to a percentage of the cost of a drug.A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with vehicular homicide and operating while intoxicated after his vehicle struck two pedestrians in the road Sunday, killing one and injuring the other.Kyle Kubite, 45, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested Sunday and charged with the crimes after the pedestrians were struck in the 1400 block of Memorial Dr SE at roughly 4:45 p.m. SundayAccording to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, investigators determined Kubite was driving while intoxicated on Memorial Drive when he struck the two pedestrians, a man and a woman. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the release. The man had non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.Police say the investigation is still underway but they are releasing no further information as of Sunday evening. The identities of the two pedestrians are being withheld while police investigate and family members can first be notified of the news.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

An ambitious $310 million transformation of the eastern side of Buffalo Bayou gets underway this week as Buffalo Bayou Partnership -- which developed the 160-acre Buffalo Bayou Park between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive -- breaks ground on the first piece of its decade-long plan to transform the stretch of the bayou east of downtown. But the groundbreaking isn't for a project normally associated with parks and trails, for which the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is best known. The partnership on Saturday will begin the construction of an affordable housing development, called Lockwood on Buffalo Bayou. In this episode of Looped In, Rebecca Schuetz interviews Buffalo Bayou Partnership's president Anne Olson about the nonprofit's transformative plan and talks with Marissa Luck about the broader changes taking place in the East End. I've always lived in Clarksville. Like anyone else, I've moved around a few times. Still, I decided long ago that this city will always be my home, whether I reside on Memorial Drive, Bentree Court, or several other locations. It's a good town to grow up in, and I'm happy my kids made the same choice. During my walk at Liberty Park, I could not help but reflect on something that happened long ago; it sometimes feels like a bad dream when I think about it. In 2001 I was a young parent, married with two young children. We were always on the move. If you have kids, you know what I'm referring to on any day of the week. Children grow up quickly, so we desperately try to squeeze everything in that we can. Slowing down never seems like an option, but it's what we all secretly want to do. Just one afternoon with the family and no plans would be sublime. Instead, we were off to the fairgrounds for another soccer practice. I parked and watched as the kids finished their juice boxes and string cheese. Christian, my son, had to tie his shoes, and Ashlee, my daughter, looked like she had brushed her hair with a ceiling fan. It's the sort of stuff that happens when the dad is off and Moms caught up at work. My kids unbuckled in a flash and headed toward the coach, leaving two empty drink boxes behind in the back seat. I remember staring at the containers thinking how those juices meant everything to my kids, but once they finished them, they moved on, and the treats were forgotten. The young athletes ran around and kicked the ball while all parents watched silently. We were chatterboxes most of the time, but something was different about this day. Not a single grown-up was on that field in spirit. All of our minds were in another place. Flashes of the world and how our babies would one day grow up to take on the leftover madness crept around our brains. Clarksville felt safe not long ago, but today there isn't a city in the entire country unaffected by despair. The goal is to leave a better community behind, a better world. We've failed. Above was a spectacular cobalt Tennessee sky showing off its magnificence above Montgomery County. A few splashes of white reflected the warm glow of the setting sun. Then we saw it—something we hadn't seen in days since the tragedy. An airplane made its way overhead. Everyone stopped as if time had taken a break except for the object floating through the atmosphere. We watched until it was nothing more than a tiny speck evaporating in space. The slowdown was all we needed, and smiles emerged for the first time since practice began. It was a sense of relief seeing that captivating airplane gliding across the sky and leaving behind some hope; hope that things would be okay, hope that our children may have a chance in the world even after September 11th.

Natasha Trethewey, a 2021 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards winner for her searing and lyrical memoir about her mother, Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough, joins The Asterisk* to discuss epigraphs and erasure. Trethewey won a Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 2007 for “Native Guard” and served as the nation's 19th poet laureate from 2012-2014. She won the Anisfield-Wolf nonfiction prize for “Memorial Drive.” A-W Juror Simon Schama describes the prose in Trethewey's memoir as “intensely poetic, but with an emotional economy that makes the gathering catastrophe even more overwhelming when it unfolds. I also want to stress her book is a compelling portrait of race in America, from the 1960s on. It's a thrilling addition to American literature that will be read for many, many years to come as a classic not just of the memoir genre but any kind of contemporary writing.” A native of Gulfport, Miss. – although an important part of her backstory resides in Ohio – Trethewey sat down in February of 2022 to explain how she came to record the audiobook herself. She welcomed the Asterisk* into her home in Evanston, Ill., where she is a professor of English at Northwestern University.

Today on the show we feature The Blue Marble bookstore which is in Ft. Thomas KY, just a skip across the river from Cincinnati, OH. It is a bookstore that serves children from birth to young adult. I first heard about The Blue Marble in an article about their Great Green Room. If you have had children or grandchildren in the last 70 years, you have most likely read the bedtime classic, "Goodnight Moon" written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. At The Blue Marble, there is a recreated Great Green Room that includes everything from the comb and the brush and the bowl of mush to the quiet old lady who was whispering hush. We delved a little deeper and learned that The Blue Marble was one of the first children's bookstores in the country and that its founder, Tina Moore, was a pioneer in the field. Tina passed away in 2016, but our guest, Caroline Stine, has taken on the role of general manager and continues Tina's mission for the store. She's giving the store a bit of a facelift, broadening their foreign language section, and has created an inviting area just for teens. She explains why The Blue Marble has been such a special place for young booklovers for over 30 years. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd 2- A Light In the Attic by Shel Silverstein 3- The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T.Nelson 4- Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brien 5- Matilda by Roald Dahl 6- The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don Wood 7- Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke 8- Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethaway 9- House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland 10- Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo 11- The Secret History by Donna Tartt 12- Memento Monstrum by Jochen Til
