Thirty years ago, a film hit multiplexes that helped redefine love onscreen for moviegoers. So much so, in fact, that the history of the modern romantic drama might arguably be best separated into two distinct eras: before Before Sunrise, Richard Linklater's enchanting cult smash stroll through moonlit Vienna, and after. Today on Script Apart, Richard's co-writer Kim Krazin reflects on three decades of hearing from strangers about how this simple tale – in which two strangers on a train make a spontaneous decision to get off and wander the streets till dawn together – touched them deeply. The film starred Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as Jesse and Celine – one an American tourist, recovering from a botched trip to Madrid to see his now-ex girlfriend, the other a French student, heading back to Paris to continue her studies after visiting her grandmother. Kim and Richard had worked together before prior to Before Sunrise. Kim appeared as an actor in 1990's Slacker and 1993's Dazed and Confused. This time, however, they were co-writers, sequestered together for an intense eleven-day writing sprint, hard at work on a boy-meets-girl story with a difference.Before Sunrise was to be naturalistic. There would be no melodrama – no conflict for the sake of it. Just conversation, as two people brought together by chance, who live a world apart, forge a connection against the ultimate ticking clock: at sunrise, Jesse has a plane to catch. As their attraction deepens, we're left to wonder: will they see each other again after their expires, when dawn arrives? As it happens, they would; two sequels, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, later followed, the first of which Kim has a “story by” credit on. But in 1995, as the credits rolled, audiences were famously left in the dark. The film's brilliant cliffhanger ending – in which the couple decide not to exchange any contact information and instead meet at the same Vienna train station in six months' time – was being written and rewritten right up until 3am on the last night of filming. You may have heard about how Linklater was inspired by a woman who he met in a Philadelphia toy shop and ended up wandering around the city with, talking deep into the night (this woman, tragically, died in a motorcycle accident before the film's release). What you might not be aware of is Kim's chance encounter at a Bob Dylan concert in London, one day on a train trip through England, that gave her some of the emotional kindling for Jesse and Celine's tale. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, you'll discover what parts of the movie wouldn't fly today because of the modern technology that connects us brilliantly, but also robs us of the “romance of chance,” pervading every frame in Before Sunrise. We get into early plans to set the film not in Vienna but in Texas, and everything unlocked by the decision to set the movie abroad. And finally we get into whether or not Jesse in the film invents the concept of social media a good decade or so ahead of time. This is one of those 90s movies that really shouldn't have been made. Lucky for you that it was so bad that we still ended up having plenty to say about it. Mikey had the unfortunate experience of seeing this in the theater, but in 1997 we were really spoiled for choice at the cinema each week. It wouldn't be a true exploration of 90s movies if we didn't talk about the duds from time to time. While I wasn't a fan of this hack job of a script that wasted some talented actors, we at least got a good soundtrack. If you watched that BUSH music video for "Mouth" you basically saw the movie. We talk about how Julie Delpy only did the film to pay for her rent, the awkward performance of Tom Everett Scott, and how Julie Bowen had the best part in the entire film. Director Mohammad Rasoulof had escaped a prison sentence in Iran just days before his latest film screened at the Cannes Film Festival this year. "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" went on to stun critics and win the Jury Prize. Critic Emma Jones tells us why it was her favourite film of the festival and how Rasoulof managed to incorporate the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests to great effect. We also discuss Francis Ford Coppola's epic project "Megalopolis" and see James McAvoy in a chilling new role in "Speak No Evil". Plus, French actress and director Julie Delpy injects her unique humour into "Meet the Barbarians", a comedy about a community's response to refugees in France.

Le film indépendant américain Strange Darling, réalisé par JD Molnar, revisite le thème du serial killer en jouant avec la structure narrative. Le film est découpé en chapitres désordonnés, à la manière de Christopher Nolan, ce qui permet de créer des surprises authentiques et de révéler progressivement les personnages. L'actrice principale, Willa Fitzgerald, y livre une performance marquante, et le film, tourné en 35 mm, se distingue par son esthétique rare et sa bande-son signée Zeeburg. Dans un autre registre, Les Barbares de Julie Delpy aborde la thématique des réfugiés avec une tentative de comédie grinçante. Le film montre les réactions d'une petite ville bretonne à l'arrivée d'une famille syrienne, mais échoue à équilibrer la satire et le drame, créant une œuvre inégale. Enfin, Langue étrangère de Claire Burger explore les relations franco-allemandes à travers l'histoire de Fanny, une adolescente française en séjour linguistique à Leipzig. Le film dépeint avec justesse les clichés entre les deux pays, tout en abordant des thèmes politiques et sociaux comme l'engagement des jeunes et la peur du futur. Malgré sa richesse thématique, le film laisse une légère impression d'inachevé. Il s'agit d'une comédie sociale au ton très acide, mais bourrée de tendresse, l'histoire du quotidien d'un petit village breton dont la tranquillité va être troublée par l'arrivée prochaine de réfugiés ukrainiens. Les pour et les contres s'opposent, discutent, jusqu'au moment où les Ukrainiens se transforment en Syriens, faisant exploser le fragile consensus chèrement bâti par le maire. Adán Jodorowsky es un músico, actor, productor y director franco-mexicano. Es hijo del cineasta chileno Alejandro Jodorowsky y de la actriz mexicana Valérie Trumblay. Desde pequeño ha actuado, principalmente en películas de su papá. En 1989 ganó el Premio Saturno al Mejor Actor Joven por su papel en Santa Sangre. En 2007 compartió pantalla con Julie Delpy en la película 2 Días en París, y en 2013 actúo en La Danza de la Realidad. En 2016 protagonizó Poesía sin fin, de nuevo bajo la dirección de su padre. En 2006 lanza su primer disco como solista bajo el nombre Adanowsky. Desde entonces ha hecho una decena de discos. Ha colaborado con artistas como Robin Coudert, Devendra Banhart, Alizée, Natalia Lafourcade, IMS, Teri Gender Bender, Sasha Sokol y Mon Laferte. En 2012 produjo el primer álbum de solista de León Larregui recibiendo por él dos nominaciones al Latin Grammy. En 2016 trabajaron juntos de nuevo en Voluma, uno de los discos más populares de la época. Adán produjo la discografía completa de Bandalos Chinos, Camas Separadas y Puro Teatro de Daniela Spalla, Agendas Vencidas de David Aguilar, álbumes de Playa Limbo, Jumbo, Enrique Bunbury y el multipremiado De Todas las Flores de Natalia Lafourcade. Ha dirigido cortometrajes y videos y es parte del grupo The Guapos. Adán vive en México y complementa su trabajo artístico con talleres.
