It's Audience Choice time so this week we're discussing the 60's family musical CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. We're defending bombastic Barons, professional child catchers and dissatisfied haircut customers all while declaring a father, who straps explosives to himself while his children run in traffic, an unfit parent. 278: Austin Frerick takes the stage at our annual Churchtown Dairy event to explain why today's food economy looks less like a functioning market that benefits farmers and eaters, and more like a new Gilded Age. He traces how a handful of Big Food "barons" have consolidated power over grain, meat, dairy, coffee, and distribution, often using tactics that average humans would just never consider. He then lays out a practical reform agenda built around antitrust enforcement, institutional buying, farm-bill redesign, and stronger journalism to yield a more positive vision for rural America and the future of food and farming. https://realorganicproject.org/austin-frerick-food-barons-live-at-churchtown The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit: https://www.realorganicproject.org/directory We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. Air Week: May 11-17, 2026 Imperial Records, Pt. 9 – 1956, Pt. 2 Imperial Records was a major player among the indie labels of the late 1940s and the entirety of the 1950s. Started in Los Angeles in 1946 by Lew Chudd, a Canadian raised in Harlem, Imperial began filling the ethnic and cultural voids left by the majors at the time. Chudd knew there was a large market for Latino Music in America, so he headed to Mexico City and recorded some Mexican jump bands that sold very well. He then included square dance records which also racked up sales as now square dances could be held without callers. He began recording Rhythm & Blues in 1947 and by ’49, he had hired Dave Bartholomew to scout talent in fertile New Orleans. The Braun Brother had beat him to The Crescent City by recording Paul Gayten and Annie Laurie first, but with Bartholomew’s help, Chudd was able to sign Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Archibald and Jewel King, dominating the New Orleans R&B scene. This week, we continue our Imperial series with part nine, focusing on Imperial’s R&B releases from the second half of 1956. Fats Domino has the biggest hit of his entire career with “Blueberry Hill,” a tune that Dave Bartholomew did not think he should record. It sold millions and millions and topped the R&B charts and landing at a whopping #2 on the pop chart. Matt The Cat presents the story behind that monumental release as well as spinning some great and seldom heard vocal group records from The Barons, The Victorials, The Dukes and The Honey Bees, a female group. We’ll also dig on some solid R&B releases from Johnny Fuller, Ernie Freeman and Gloria Jean Pitts as we keeps those records spinning on part nine of the Imperial Records Story on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW

Air Week: May 4-10, 2026 Imperial Records, Pt. 8 – 1956, Pt. 1 Imperial Records was a major player among the indie labels of the late 1940s and the entirety of the 1950s. This week, we continue our Imperial series with part eight, focusing on Imperial’s R&B releases from the first half of 1956. Fats Domino keeps the momentum going after breaking through to the Pop Charts in 1955 with “Ain’t It A Shame.” In early ’56, he scores with “Bo Weevil, “My Blue Heaven” and “I’m In Love Again” and will have the biggest hit of his entire career later in the year. Bobby Mitchell leaves to The Toppers to become a solo star and scores the only charting record of his entire career this year with “Try Rock and Roll.” Dave Bartholomew is behind Mitchell’s breakout record as well as 2 charting singles for Smiley Lewis the year and more great releases from The Spiders, who are now being billed at Chuck Carbo & The Spiders. Out in LA, Imperial is still making some great vocal group records with the Jewels and The Barons and Matt The Cat keeps those records spinning as he features part eight of the Imperial Records Story on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW

A century and a half before the “Golden Age of Piracy,” an Irish woman of noble birth was conquering the inland seas and coastlines on the western edge of the island. Gráinne Ó Máille, anglicized to Grace O'Malley, hailed from the Umhaill line, a seafaring clan of Connacht, and while the family did conduct legitimate forms of trade, they also ran protection rackets on boats that tried to fish their waters, and sometimes plundered merchant vessels in the area, as well as settlements belonging to neighboring clans. Her life almost perfectly overlapped Queen Elizabeth I's, and during Grace's life, the English Crown was deeply invested in the conquest of Ireland, mostly by seducing its nobles into servitude with fancy English titles. Barons and Earls proliferated around Dublin for years, but English shenanigans finally reached the West of the country when Grace's first husband was cut out from the line of succession to his family's Chief of the Name. Then he was assassinated, leaving Grace ready and willing to enact violent revenge on his killers. The Crown continued eroding the alliances she was building. Her second husband was demoted from his role as regional king of Connacht while Grace was jailed on a plundering trip. When the Crown-supported king died, Grace and her husband teamed up to raise an army of 2,000 men to insure his succession. He not only got the title, but was named a Baron as well, in exchange for his promise of fealty to English law. But Crown agents had already set their sights on Grace O'Malley as the kind of noteworthy adversary whose arrest or death would send a message throughout the Emerald Isle, and Grace was eventually forced to sail to London to seek an audience with Queen Elizabeth herself, an effort in which she prevailed handily. Grace's story is full of courage, vengeance, and daring-do, but it's also a story rooted in specific moment in time, when the longstanding society of Ireland was changing and being changed. Ireland's Pirate Queen Grace O'Malley saw it all up close, and as a most unconventional woman, charted her own course through. Listen ad-free at patreon.com/trashyroyalspodcast. Air Week: April 27-May 3, 2026 Imperial Records, Pt. 7 – 1955, Pt. 2 Imperial Records was a major player among the indie labels of the late 1940s and the entirety of the 1950s. Started in Los Angels in 1946 by Lew Chudd, a Canadian raised in Harlem, Imperial began filling the ethnic and cultural voids left by the majors at the time. This week, we continue our Imperial series with part seven, focusing on Imperial’s R&B releases from the second half of 1955. Last week in the first part of 1955, Matt The Cat alluded to Fats Domino’s big crossover breakthrough and in June it happened when “Ain’t It A Shame” topped the R&B chart and crossed over to a whopping #10 on the Pop chart. It became the biggest selling R&B record of 1955 and along with Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” helped to usher in Rock n’ Roll. Though 1955 was a strong year for Fats, Dave Bartholomew, The Spiders and Imperial’s New Orleans roster, the Los Angeles vocal groups were also making a dent with The Barons and The Jewels having a few solid releases. Blues legend Roosevelt Sykes stops by Imperial for a quick few singles, while guitarist Jimmy Nolen gives us a glimpse of his future greatness. Matt The Cat keeps those records spinning as he features part seven of the Imperial Records Story on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW

The future of the chain restaurant is... chicken? I learned so much from this conversation with food systems (and chain restaurant) expert Austin Frerick — from how Sysco maintains its restaurant supremacy (and what Sysco "tastes" like) to which chain restaurants have significantly changed in quality (Wendy's) and are on the verge of extinction (also Wendy's). Did you know what makes a chain restaurant resistant to suckage? The answer will and will not surprise you! This was such a fun, enlightening conversation — the sort that you'll think about every time you eat in or drive past a chain restaurant — and does exactly what we always hope for a Culture Study episode: it'll make you think a lot more about the (very everyday, very unassuming) world around you. Vērts iepazīties – jaunie dramaturgi un "Satori" autori Patrīcija M. Keiša un Aleksandrs Barons. Arī dramaturgi Dailes teātra iestudējumam bērniem "Runcis zābakos". "Mēs jau iepriekš minējām par vēsturiskajām pasakām, to dažādajām versijām. Man šķita problemātiski..." min Aleksandrs Barons.
Tas nav viegli. Rinda kustas ļoti lēni, jo pamatā tie, kas tikuši iekšā, cenšas nofotografēt sevi blakus teju visām kompozīcijām. Pirms parastajiem apmeklētājiem ekspozīciju apskata tiesneši, un, kamēr parastie interesenti vēl stāv rindā, balkus zokalo uzslietajā skatuvē notiek apbalvošanas ceremonija. To pavada vairāku mūzikas grupu uzstāšanās. To oahakieši ir panākuši. Ja kaut kur pasaulē redzat veikalu plauktos šādu dzērienu – ziniet, tas nāk no Oahakas.
There are stages in the fall of every Empire and America is no different. No matter how many foreigners we deport its to late. No matter how many laws you change to combat Feminism, and the welfare state in the end a country built on slavery, ruled by robber Barons, and feminized to place women ahead of men academically while men toil and sacrifice, without wealth or opportunities to have there own legacy will fail. The builders and destroyers of a nation must rule or be abandoned. Men will only go so long in an Empire being told your not worthy because you poor by a system design to keep a portion of its population poor so others can enjoy the bounty!https://youtu.be/HlfDfeUuFwI
Stijn Schmitz your host welcomes Gary Wagnar to the show. Gary Wagnar is Executive Producer of TheGoldForecast.com. In this detailed discussion about gold markets, Wagnar provides a comprehensive technical analysis of current gold trading conditions, highlighting significant market movements and potential future trajectories. Currently, gold is experiencing notable volatility, with prices dropping below $5,000 per ounce. Gary emphasizes the importance of the 50-day moving average as a critical technical indicator, noting that breaking below this level suggests a potential pivot from a bullish to a bearish market trend. He attributes the recent price decline primarily to the Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain current interest rates, which has dampened gold’s performance. Despite the short-term bearish outlook, Wagnar remains cautiously optimistic about gold’s long-term prospects. He points out that gold has still gained 16% over the past year, which is a significant performance compared to other commodities. The ongoing geopolitical conflicts and potential inflationary pressures from rising oil prices could provide future support for gold prices. Wagnar also discusses his technical analysis approach, particularly his preference for Japanese candlestick charting, which he believes offers superior visual insights into price movements compared to traditional Western bar charts. He uses Fibonacci retracement levels to identify potential support and resistance points, currently suggesting that gold could find support around $4,677 if the current downward trend continues. Ahead of BC Budget 2026, the provincial government was already laying the groundwork to defend austerity measures by arguing that there is not enough wealth to redistribute. Economist Alex Hemingway disagrees. He and fellow economist Silas Xuareb at Canadians for Tax Fairness say that there is wealth in BC and Canada, and claiming otherwise is a way to distract us from the massive concentration of wealth in this country. Alex Hemingway is Senior Economist and Public Finance Policy Analyst with BC Policy Solutions. He joins me today to talk about the report published last week, The New Robber Barons.

In the early 13th century, England was a kingdom under pressure, as the challenges posed by King John's reign had left the realm restless. By 1215, tensions had reached boiling point. What began as isolated grumblings among nobles soon evolved into an organised challenge to royal authority – all building up to a showdown at Runnymede in 1215. In this first episode of HistoryExtra's Sunday Series on Magna Carta, Emily Briffett is joined by Nicholas Vincent to explore how John's disastrous reign set the stage for the charter. ––––– GO BEYOND THE PODCAST Want to learn more about Magna Carta and the world in which it originated? The First Barons' War erupted in the early 13th century, primarily due to King John's unpopular reign, characterized by heavy taxation, military failures, and disputes with the nobility. The conflict was sparked by John's refusal to adhere to the terms of the Magna Carta, which he had sealed in June 1215 in response to baronial pressure. This document aimed to limit the king's powers and protect the rights of the barons and the church. Sont-elles interdites ?
