This episode continues our series on the Cinque Ports, an ancient confederation of maritime towns in southeast England that from the early Middle Ages provided ships and men to the crown in return for special powers and privileges. They have since become rightly dubbed as the cradle of the Royal Navy. Our first episode explored the Cinque Ports' rich history and now we're on the road, visiting these magnificent sites of maritime history to bring you their individual stories. It's a world of castles, churches, creeks, cobbled lanes, docks and harbours. This episode takes us to Faversham, nestled up the swale estuary in east Kent. Faversham was associated with the Cinque Ports from that group's earliest days – we know that the town's Barons were granted all the liberties of the ports as early as 1302. Today it is a fabulous place to enjoy maritime heritage: you can see the preservation of maritime skills and trades in creek-side sites and celebrate the restoration of historic ships & boats. All around are constant reminders that Faversham was a proud independent town and yet intimately linked with the Crown. To find out more Dr Sam Willis met up with past mayor, Trevor Martin, and Councillor Josh Rowlands, both brimming with stories of their town. Hosted on Acast. With the latest VAT increase, South Africa is set to lose R29 billion in excise tax revenue a year. In this interview, Johnny Moloto, the Sub-Saharan Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs of British American Tobacco (BAT), describes how the illicit cigarette trade exploded during the 2020 COVID-19 tobacco sales ban - and now accounts for 75 percent of the total cigarette market. He says the industry still has not seen the effects of the dismantlement of an illicit gold and tobacco network announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his recent SONA speech. “It took us all by surprise…We would like to hear more about which syndicate that was,” he says. As for persistent rumours that the cigarette barons have friends in high places, he says: “Why is it always the usual suspects that are always being picked up by … research? Maybe we ought to look into this, if only to satisfy our curiosity and put this matter to bed so that there isn't this speculation about the complicity of politicians as well as government authorities.” Moloto lists proposed solutions to combat this arm of organised crime more effectively.

Austin Frerick is an expert on agricultural and antitrust policy. In 2024, he published his debut book, entitled Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry. The book profiles a series of powerful magnates to illustrate the concentration of power in the global food system. Barons has received universal acclaim, including a coveted starred review from both Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, and has been named one of the “Best Books of 2024” by the latter. The host of Bloomberg's Odd Lots applauded the book, remarking, "I have come away with a completely different idea of agriculture that I cannot unsee." Frerick previously worked at the Open Markets Institute, the U.S. Department of Treasury, and the Congressional Research Service before becoming a Fellow at Yale University. During the 2020 presidential campaign, he advised candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg on agricultural policy before ultimately serving as Co-Chair of the Biden campaign's Agriculture Antitrust Policy Committee. He is a 7th generation Iowan and 1st generation college graduate, with degrees from Grinnell College and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He also serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President for Common Good Iowa and as Treasurer for the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project.

The recent Note Closers Show episode featured Rick and Crystal Rumer, a dynamic Texas couple who've built a remarkably successful real estate investing business. Their journey, from corporate jobs to full-time real estate investors specializing in land notes, is a testament to hard work, strategic planning, and a healthy dose of Texan grit. Get ready for some serious inspiration – and maybe a chuckle or two!Rick and Crystal's story begins long before they became full-time real estate investors. Rick worked for JPMorgan Chase, while Crystal was in sales. Both had early successes with rental properties, but they initially dabbled in several real estate ventures before finding their niche. Their entrepreneurial journey mirrors many investor journeys, which often includes learning from mistakes, pivoting from one approach to another, and a fair share of trial and error. From Rental Properties to Land Notes:After leaving their corporate jobs, Rick and Crystal initially focused on fix-and-flip properties and wholesaling. They even considered purchasing hotels, a move that would have put them in a much more crowded market. But their most profitable ventures came from focusing on land. They realized that by purchasing larger tracts of land, subdividing them into smaller lots, and owner-financing those lots, they could generate substantial returns and achieve remarkable financial success. Their story reminds us that sometimes the most lucrative opportunities lie outside the typical investor's playbook.Key Takeaways from Rick & Crystal's Success:Rick and Crystal's success in land note investing can be attributed to several key strategies:Strategic Location: They focus on high-growth areas with strong demand for land, such as the Golden Triangle of Texas (San Antonio, Austin, and the surrounding areas), maximizing their returns.Long-Term Vision: They aren't afraid to make long-term investments and build relationships with investors and buyers. In the land note business, time is on the investor's side!Owner Financing: They utilize owner financing, making the deals more attractive to buyers and generating consistent cash flow.Teamwork: Rick and Crystal emphasize the importance of working together, leveraging their individual skills and strengths. This highlights the power of a strong business partnership.Effective Marketing: They rely on a combination of networking, referrals, and targeted marketing strategies to find new investors and buyers. This includes utilizing direct mail and a strong online presence.Embracing the Challenges:They share some of the common challenges and pitfalls faced by investors, including the importance of using private money, managing risk, and working with other investors and lenders, not just the buyers. Their experience highlights the value of carefully vetting potential partners, especially when dealing with large transactions. They provide several examples of when a deal went off the rails and how they navigated these challenges. Conclusion:Rick and Crystal's story is a compelling example of building wealth through real estate note investing. Their success underscores the importance of specializing in a specific niche, building strong relationships with investors and lenders, and creating a well-structured business model. Remember, even experienced investors like Rick and Crystal made mistakes along the way, highlighting that there's always room for improvement. Their story is filled with inspiration and serves as a reminder that perseverance, adaptation, and teamwork can lead to significant financial success in real estate.Watch the original VIDEO HERE!Connect with Rick & Crystal HERE!Book a call with SCOTT!Love the show? Austin Frerick is an economist, Yale Fellow, former Congressional Research Assistant, and author of Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry. He investigates how the U.S. food system became both outrageously expensive and dangerously toxic—not just for consumers, but for the farmers who grow our food. Instead of blaming deregulation alone, Frerick exposes the real culprits: the Big Ag monopolies that have spent billions to rig the system, buy politicians, and crush opposition to expand their hidden empires. We break down how these corporate Barons pulled off their silent coup, the devastating impact of monopolization on farming, food prices, and public health. Most importantly, we explore what can be done to take back control of the food system before it's too late. Don't miss the historic cosmology summit in Portugal this summer!!! Fighting for her rightful inheritance of the English crown, Empress Matilda (1110–1125) proved to be a grandmaster in the Anarchy's bloody chess game. The war of dynastic succession in 12th century England and Normandy is known as the Anarchy. (1135-1154). Barons and nobles of all ranks joined in the family quarrel over the succession to Henry I. Matilda, Henry's only surviving legitimate child and widow of Holy Roman Emperor Henry V, challenged her cousin and rival Stephen of Blois, who managed to seize the crown. This was a game of chess or chequers, in which seizing castles and fortified towns was what mattered, as well as bringing nobles with their retainers over to one's side. Matilda played astutely but only won when she ceased to pursue the crown for herself and demanded it for her son. She continued as the power behind Henry II's throne from Normandy. This episode's guest, Dr Catherine Hanley, is the author of the latest scholarly biography of Empress Matilda, Matilda: Empress, Queen, Warrior (Yale University Press, 2019). Holding a PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Sheffield, she is the author of several history books.
Tech oligarchs have risen to dominate global politics and public discourse, posing grave threats to democracy and governance. Under Donald Trump's presidency, the consolidation of power among Silicon Valley elites has exacerbated critical challenges, including the spread of misinformation, the weaponization of social media, and the unchecked development of artificial intelligence. These forces have not only deepened political polarization but also paved the way for the normalization of extremism, undermining the foundations of truth in the digital era. The intersection of technological exploitation, political radicalization, and the information war presents urgent questions for the future of democratic societies. In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, we unpack these critical dynamics with two distinguished guests. Andres Kasekamp, an expert on populist radical right movements and European governance, explores the historical and political parallels of authoritarian trends. Ron Deibert, a global authority on cybersecurity and digital rights, highlights the ways in which tech platforms enable political manipulation and disinformation campaigns. Together, they offer in-depth insights into the complex role of digital platforms in amplifying authoritarianism and discuss potential pathways for mitigating their impact on democracy. Andres Kasekamp is the Elmar Tampõld Chair of Estonian Studies and Professor of History at the University of Toronto's Department of History and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He is a leading scholar on Baltic politics, memory politics, and populist radical right movements. Formerly a Professor of Baltic Politics at the University of Tartu and Director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute in Tallinn, Kasekamp has held visiting positions at esteemed institutions such as Humboldt University in Berlin and the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs. Among his acclaimed works is A History of the Baltic States, which has been translated into multiple languages and remains a definitive text in the field. His research explores European foreign and security policy and the intricate dynamics of cooperation and conflict in the Baltic Sea region. Currently, he is editing The Oxford Handbook of Modern Baltic History. Ron Deibert is a Professor of Political Science and the Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto. A pioneer in cybersecurity and human rights, Deibert has led the Citizen Lab's groundbreaking investigations into cyber espionage, commercial spyware, and digital censorship, producing over 120 influential reports. These include the Tracking Ghostnet investigation into cyber-espionage and the Reckless series, which revealed spyware abuses targeting journalists and activists. Deibert is also the author of RESET: Reclaiming the Internet for Civil Society, a winner of the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing. His work has earned numerous accolades, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award and the Order of Ontario. Beyond academia, he serves on advisory boards for organizations like Amnesty International and PEN Canada, making him a critical voice in addressing the intersection of technology, democracy, and civil liberties. We're starting 2025 with a cheerful subject: the rise, and rise, of a new class of international oligarchs. With Elon Musk – the world's richest man and most pathological tweeter – dominating headlines in the UK, as well as the US, questions are emerging about undue influence from a minority of super-rich people. Why is Mr Musk pushing the King of England to dismiss Prime Minister Keir Starmer? And how do oligarchs, beyond the Tesla chief, exert their power around the world? Dr. Julian E. Kunnie, professor of religious, Latin American, Middle Eastern and North African studies at the University of Arizona. It has been over 20 years since the publication of Dr. Julian Kunnie's prescient and perspicacious treatise, Is Apartheid Really Dead?: Pan Africanist Working-Class Critical Perspectives, and nine years since we first dialogued with Dr. Kunnie about his book (podcast episodes 9 and 10), so what is the political terrain of Azania (South Africa) today? Is the analysis of Is Apartheid Really Dead? in regards to post-apartheid Azania still relevant today? Is Azania finally a fully sovereign nation run by its autochthonous inhabitants? If not, is it on its way? Or worse, is Dr. Kunnie's analysis just as relevant today as it was when his book was first published; which means Azania is still suffering under neocolonial hegemony, which makes true revolutionary Pan-African working-class sovereignty for Azania a mere chimera? In this episode of Conscientization 101 podcast, we present part one of a three-part dialogue with Dr. Julian Kunnie in regards to these vexing questions. And while the aforementioned book was the original impetus for this dialogue; we also incorporate Dr. Kunnie's other publication, The Cost of Globalization: Dangers to the Earth and Its People (podcast episodes 23-25), his forthcoming book The Earth Mother and the Assault of Capitalism: Living Sustainably with All Life–scheduled for release on April 23, 2025–as well as a myriad of other topics. In part one of our scintillating series with Dr. Kunnie, we set the stage for parts two and three, by giving an analysis of the impact of imperialism on the world's people and ecosystem, and much more. We also debut our new podcast intro: written, mixed, and performed by our esteemed brother Raggo Zulu Rebel! We also discuss details about our new Conscientization 101 Premium Podcast subscription; as well as the hand Raggo Zulu Rebel played in assisting us with our premium podcast subscription by introducing us to UK based music producer–and graphic designer we might add–Morfius! A very providential occurrence indeed. And if that wasn't enough, we also discuss the following: Settler colonialism, Palestine, and why resistance against settler colonialism is never a casus belli The election of a choleric, misanthropic, septuagenarian to the U.S. presidency. The utterly absurd, out of touch, and reactionary presidential campaign of the Democratic party Neocolonialism and wokeness And, much more! This episode features music from: Conscientization 101– "Decolonize This? Properly Defining Settlers – Part 1" Fela Kuti – “Confusion Break Bones (C.B.B.)” from his album Underground System Wise Intelligent – “Robbers, Barons, And Bankers” from his album El Negro Guerrero Raggo Zulu Rebel – “Freedom” (feat. Spliffy & Killa B) from his album The Rainmaker Donnie Mossberg – “Tragedy Mix” Excerpts for our Morfius anecdote were from the following: Cyclonious – “My Name Is Morfius” from his Heroes For Hire album Big Cakes – “The Outro” from his album CCC, and “Twitter” from his album KFC (we purchased this album on November 13, 2014, but when researching for the link to this album on November 26, 2024, we noticed the only place this was available was on Big Cake's Bandcamp page, and this track no longer on the album) Raggo Zulu Rebel – “Give It To Dem” (feat. Jayjayborn2sing) from his album The Return of Jah Messenger – Vol. 2, and “Babylon” from his album Ganja Music Vol. 2 Morfius Instagram: @MorfiusUK Donnie Mossberg Instagram: @machingunfunk The Podcast Was Just A Snippet Of The Interview. Whether you're at the grocery store or a restaurant, food is becoming obscenely expensive. It's easy to point to inflation as the sole culprit, but that's only a narrow view of a much bigger picture. For years, the food industry has been falling to monopolists who have been edging out independent farmers. Food quality has gone down, prices have gone up, and it has been a shocking disaster for the environment. This week, Adam speaks with Austin Frerick, an expert on agriculture and antitrust policy, a fellow at Yale, and author of Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry.
