How does the biggest misconception about Spanish wine make it a hidden gem for wine lovers? How did Spain's civil war and period of dictatorship delay the growth of its wine culture? What makes the vineyards of Priorat challenging to walk and unforgettable to visit? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Sarah Jane Evans, author of the terrific new book The Wines of Central and Southern Spain: From Catalunya to Cadiz. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Sarah Jane Evans' wonderful new book, The Wines of Central and Southern Spain: From Catalunya to Cadiz. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights How did the memory of her parents bottling wine at home influence Sarah Jane's perception of wine? What is the Oxford vs. Cambridge University Varsity Blind Wine-Tasting Match? What was Sarah Jane's experience as a judge at wine competitions in Japan? What's unique about Japan's peaches and why does Sarah Jane recommend them as a “can't miss” on a trip to Japan? Why was Sarah Jane initially drawn to Spanish wine? What is the Officer's Cross of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic and why was Sarah Jane awarded this honour? Why did Sarah Jane choose to write her Master of Wine dissertation on the alchemists of Sherry? What is the significance of Sarah Jane's choice to use first names when writing about winemakers? What are the hallmark characteristics of Spanish orange wines? Where are Spain and its territories located in Europe? What's the biggest misconception about Spanish wine? Why does Sarah Jane consider Spain the most exciting country in Europe for wine? How are winemakers reviving old vineyards in Spain? What makes Casa Castillo's Monastrell wines unique? Key Takeaways Unfortunately, people think of Spanish wine as cheap and cheerful. That image is hard to to get rid of. So when you look at a fine wine list, if you're in a Michelin-starred restaurant, you will start off with maybe Champagne, and then you'll have France, and then you'll get into Italy, and then, if you're lucky, Spain will come next. The good thing about that is that it makes very top wine in Spain, still very good value. Since Spain had a civil war just before the Second World War, and after that, they had a fascist dictatorship that went on till the late 1970s, they didn't join Europe until the 1980s. So during that time of the dictatorship, they were told what to farm, where to farm, how to farm it. So there was no priority about fostering a wonderful wine culture. that's only really coming in the last 40 years. Spain has just been a little bit behind, but it has to escape, because you can't survive on paying growers next to nothing, making very cheap wines. About Sarah Jane Evans Sarah Jane is an award-winning writer. She travels widely as an educator and consultant, and is a Contributing Editor to Decanter. Her books include The Wines of Central and Southern Spain, The Wines of Northern Spain, Seville, Chocolate Unwrapped, and also the entries on Spain and Sherry for the annual Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Guide. Sarah Jane received the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic awarded by the King of Spain for her work for Spain. Beyond Spain, her special interests in wine are Greece, South America and the great fortified and sweet wines of the world. To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/358.
October is Libra giving way to Scorpio: balance slipping into intensity, charm into obsession, the mirror into the abyss. It's the season of mystery, of hidden rooms, of long looks inward. We're calling it The Shadow Cellar. So what does that mean in the glass? It means wines that feel a little uncanny, a little more textural, more emotional than intellectual. It means wines that feel a little strange in the best way — wines that make you pause, tilt your head, and go, wait, what is this? Sometimes it's a red that's darker, moodier, and more intense than you're used to. Other times it's a white that smells like flowers, spices, or even incense — beautiful but polarizing, the kind of wine you either fall in love with or swear off forever. These are not wines designed to please everyone. They're wines that ask: do you like this, or don't you? And if you do, what does that say about you? This month is about tuning into your own taste. Your palate is not a performance — it's an identity. Wine isn't here to tell you who you should be; it's here to reflect who you are when no one's watching.Support the showCONNECT WITH US: You can follow and message us on Instagram @joinblackthorn You can also reach out via email - gather@joinblackthorn.com If you want to help support the show and get extra content every week, you can subscribe for $5 a month and get a monthly bonus episode in your feed just for subscribers.

Natural wine is a growing movement in Catalonia, rooted in both tradition and innovation. With diverse terroirs and a long winemaking history, regions such as Penedès, Alt Empordà, Conca de Barberà and Terra Alta & Priorat have become hubs for natural winemakers. This week on Filling the Sink we find out what natural wine is, who is making it and why Catalonia is gaining recognition on the global natural wine scene. Producer Rafa Camps from La Natural describes the challenges of small-scale natural wine production, including climate change and spontaneous fermentation. Experts Benji Sher and Ida Mogren from the natural wine education centre SucSuc explain the philosophy behind natural wine, rooted in ethics and sustainability. We visit the natural wine restaurant Amateur in Barcelona to meet owner Marco Bolatti and chef Tomás Esmoris and discover the cuisine and aesthetic which accompany the Catalan natural wine boom and which appeal to younger, less traditional wine drinkers. Plus reporter Cillian Shields joins host Beth Cohen to review some key natural wine terminology and discuss the up-and-coming natural wine bars in Barcelona. This week, our Catalan phrase is “Bon vi fa bon cor” - “Good wine makes a good heart”. It's a classic saying which expresses the belief that wine, enjoyed in moderation, brings joy and warmth to the soul.
In this episode, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos delve into the diverse world of Spanish wines, shining a spotlight on lesser-known regions and grape varieties. They discuss the distinct characteristics of wines from Galicia, Ribera del Duero, and Montsant, offering personal insights and expert tips on wine tasting and pairing. Their conversation showcases the richness of Spanish wine culture and the rewards of venturing beyond well-known regions. Key Takeaways: Spanish wines are often misunderstood in Australia. Galicia boasts a cooler climate and terraced vineyards. Caíño Tinto is an elegant yet lesser-known grape variety. Ribera del Duero is renowned for bold, age-worthy wines. Tannins can vary significantly between different wines within the same DOC. Vega Sicilia is a prestigious Spanish wine worth collecting. Montsant offers excellent value compared to its neighbour, Priorat. Exploring new wine regions can lead to unexpected discoveries. When we say hidden gem, we are not kidding! When people think of Spanish red wines, they immediately think of Rioja, but don't sleep on Priorat. Hailing from the Catalonia area of Spain, Priorat is a Grenache-based red wine blend that completely blew away our expectations! Rich, complex, and oh so drinkable, this is a wine that deserves a lot more attention and accolades. And we are guessing you may have never even heard of it! The magic of Priorat is said to come from the unique licorella soils in which is grown. Whatever that magic is, we want more of it. Join us to learn more about this underappreciated red that is considered one of Spain's great wines. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2020 Gil Family Estates Llicorella Vins Bluegray Priorat and 2020 Cellers Unió Laurentia Priorat.Contact The Wine Pair Podcast - we'd love to hear from you!Visit our website, leave a review, and reach out to us: https://thewinepairpodcast.com/Follow and DM us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewinepairpodcast/Send us an email: joe@thewinepairpodcast.com

When I first moved to Spain late last summer, I expected to jump straight into my new job at a local winery, guiding tourists and explaining the history of Priorat. I had prepared and studied for the position, but when I arrived the job fell through. Disheartened at first, I then welcomed the unplanned break I was given and realized how much I needed to just stop. After two years of moving things from one storage unit to another, from the US to Spain and finishing our house here, I felt tired, directionless and empty of any sort of inspiration. For a week or so I mostly slept. Then, little by little, I started picking up the pieces and slowly putting my life back together here in Cornudella de Montsant. With this very first solo episode, I would like to give a glimpse into my life here and what inspired me to start recording again.

It's another addition to the "Alternatives to a Fave" series! This time: Grenache/Garnacha. As an extension of the Grape Mini-series, we come up with lists of wines that lovers of a specific grape can try as alternatives. Grenache/Garnacha comes in many different forms -- as a juicy, cherry-berry standalone grape in Spain, as lighter blender in the Rhône and Rioja, in rosé and fortified wines, and as full, serious wine in places like Priorat (Spain), Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France), and Australia, where old vines make very intense wines. Photo: Grenache grapes in California. Credit: Getty Images via Canva This one was a challenge, but we came up with a good list of ideas and most won't burn a hole in your wallet! This show focuses only on the red wines (not rosé or sweet wines) and our list includes everything from Zinfandel to Nero d'Avola, to Valpolicella and Alentejo blends (Portugal), on the lighter side to Syrah, Amarone, and Aglianico on the heavy side. We hope, as usual, that this show opens some new doors and gives you new ideas of wines to add to your repertoire! Full show notes are on Patreon.
