Hospitality check-in: A 'Trump bump' in Florida, and immigration-policy concerns

How has the Trump administration has been impacting hotels and travel? One might look at the visitation numbers in the Palm Beaches area of Florida, where President Trump's Mar a Lago estate is located, to see one impact of a “Trump bump” on visitation. Another aspect is the immigration crackdown -- and whether the administration's plans to deport illegal workers has had any impact within the hospitality business. In this episode, Travel Weekly hotels editor Christina Jelski and Peter Ricci, the director of the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at Florida Atlantic University, talk about both topics. In our first section: How the Palm Beaches has surpassed Miami-Dade in key hotel metrics and why Trump's presence might be drawing visitors to the region. In the second half of the episode: Whether hotels should be concerned about the specter of mass deportations, and the continuing scarcity of hospitality workers. Welcome to another episode of the Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree, and this is the second part of our TMG Hospitality Campus Crawl series. If this is your first time listening to this brand new summer series, we just launched this, we've talked about it before. Right now we're going through somewhat of a staffing shortage. We're gonna get into that a little bit into this episode. But what we're trying to accomplish with this particular series is talk to the people and places that are educating and preparing the next generation of hoteliers, the next generation of hospitality workforce. So, very excited to just move a little on up I 95 North to Boca Raton. Im a bring in my next Suite Spot guest, clinical professor and director Dr. Peter Ricci of FAU's Hospitality and Tourism Management program. Dr. Ricci, thank you so much for joining the Suite Spot today. Dr. Peter Ricci : Great. Nice to be here. Thank you. So I started sitting back here so you can see my lovely FAU owl. Now I can, move in a little bit. Thanks for having me. I love to see you and I know you're a Rosen grad. I did my doctorate there, so it's great, great to spend some time with you. Ryan Embree: Well, you have, you've got such an extensive and unique journey and, and I was talking to you off camera, how about that is one of my favorite things about our industry is, you know, sometimes our hospitality journeys take us all over the world. Sometimes we fall into hospitality as a career. Typically we meet a couple mentors along the way. And for your particular journey, you've been kind of in and out of academia. Share with our audience a little bit about your journey and the path that led you to FAU. Dr. Peter Ricci : You know it's interesting that I'm spending time with you today. Yesterday was 47 years since I moved to Florida. So I moved here as a little boy and tourism was a part of my life growing up. Always. because we had visited here first. My family also was in California, so we spent a lot of time traveling. And I've always had a love and passion for meeting people and traveling. But as a boy, you don't realize that. You just think Florida's cool because you can swim all the time and you can go play. And so my experience here growing up in middle and high school was fantastic. And, um, I started working as a teenager in a fine dining restaurant and happened to have an absolute amazing mentor who was a self-made millionaire and owned fine dining restaurants all over South Florida. And this was in the eighties when fine dining was all the rage with the flambe, tableside and fancy cocktails before they were called craft cocktails. And he was all about guest service. And of course I didn't know what that meant at that time. He was just instilling me like an etiquette. I'm kind of a casual guy, but I wouldn't say kind of, I'm a casual guy. I don't like suits and ties, but I'm all about treating people with the utmost respect, welcoming them, feeling warmly about hospitality and inviting you into my environment. So hospitality was like a natural thing for me. Undergrad, I worked food and beverage all through college. I'm pleased to welcome Peter Ricci, Clinical Associate Professor and Director for the Hospitality & Tourism Management Program at Florida Atlantic University, to hear about the FAU hospitality certificate program. One of the hallmarks of Peter's approach to hospitality education is its versatility in its practical applications. People from all kinds of industries outside of hospitality have something to glean from Peter's program. As Peter sees it, hospitality isn't just an industry but a philosophy of customer service that's transferable to any organization. He instills a desire for excellence in all his students that they can utilize in any role or business. Not only that, but he also helps students find a place within the industry with skills that aren't traditionally associated with hospitality. Hospitality will always need accountants and HR leaders, and financial advisors and talent recruiters will always benefit from the commitment to customer service that defines hospitality. As we head into 2023, AttractionPros is proud to present the sixth annual “resolutionary” episode, which sets the stage for the year to come.  In order to look forward, we look back on several guests interviewed in the past year and highlight many of the insights shared on the podcast by some of the industry's top leaders.  As you set your goals for the year ahead, you  may find yourself looking for the best ways to achieve results, and this guidance may be found in past interviews of this podcast.  In this episode, Matt and Josh look to the advice from previous podcast guests as they share their goals for 2023. Staying on the edge Matt shared that he will strive toward continual and incremental improvement in 2023.  To achieve this, Matt referenced episode 240 where John Penney talked about the importance of staying on the edge.  Always looking at the latest practices for how results are achieved can help you make regular improvements that may otherwise have stayed flat.  Complacency leads to stagnation, and ultimately leads to decline; therefore, staying on the edge is critical to growth.   Everything is figure-out-able and learning from failure In 2022, Josh set out to learn to play piano, but felt that he hit a wall with his proficiency.  Looking to episode 252, Brad Collins taught us that everything is figure-out-able, which has motivated Josh to keep going and strive for improvement.  Part of progress, however, is failure, whether it is learning to play an instrument or running a business.  In episode 227, Craig Buster talked about the value of learning from failure that eventually leads to success.   Advocating for the next generation Matt seeks to increase his involvement with supporting professionals who are new to the industry, including young professionals and those early in their careers.  Similarly, Andrea Wiles spoke about advocating for children in episode 236, where shared the long-lasting impact that it has.  By advocating for the next generation of attractions industry professionals, Matt seeks to make an impact long after his time in the industry is up.   Thinking outside the lines and embracing crazy ideas In episode 70, Josh shared that his “big hairy audacious goal” (BHAG) was to write a book on guest experience.  Fast forward to today, and the book is expected to be published in 2023!  In order to achieve a successful book launch, Josh wants to channel his creative side, even if it may be non-traditional. To do this, Josh referenced episode 234 and episode 264, where Winston Fisher talked about thinking outside the lines and Sarah Clarke talked about thinking outside the box, respectively.  Additionally, Dr. Peter Ricci shared an amazing success story that was a result of embracing crazy ideas in episode 256.   Bringing up uncomfortable subjects Matt talked about how during one-on-one coaching sessions, oftentimes leaders may open up and share vulnerable feelings that they may not feel comfortable sharing in more public settings.  By doing so, they often lead to breakthroughs and are the catalyst for long-term improvement.  By looking to what Dr. Tonya Matthews shared in episode 237 about bringing up uncomfortable subjects, Matt wants to take this mindset and ensure that he can implement it most effectively, which, from a business standpoint, is much less scalable than large workshops and other one-to-many sessions.  In order to do this, Matt also looks to Winston Fisher's guidance on thinking outside the lines from episode 234.   Embracing family and saying yes to opportunity Josh had a disruption to his plans for 2023, and as he and his family cope with changes, he is inspired by the messages that Brian Knoebel shared in episode 244 and Chuck Wray in episode 266 on putting family first.  Additionally, Djuan Rivers shared the benefits of saying yes to opportunities in episode 260.  This can include travel, engagement with the industry, and other opportunities that otherwise would not have been possible.   If you have been inspired by our guests to achieve your goals, we would love to hear about it. Please connect with us via Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, or send us an email.     We wish you a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead, and we look forward to bringing you many more amazing guests in 2023!

Peter Ricci, EdD. oversees the Hospitality and Tourism program at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL.  Peter has worked in the hospitality industry since he was 14 years old as a dishwasher in a restaurant, where he was later promoted to busser and then promoted again to server.  Throughout his career, Peter has worked in hotels, restaurants, events, travel agencies, airlines, destination marketing, and more, including moving 21 times in 12 years to open new hotels or fix broken ones.  In this interview, Peter talks about culture first, embracing crazy ideas, and flexible employment.   Culture first "I would go in and fix the culture first, and then the money would flow through." Culture occasionally becomes a victim of stock trading value.  When companies need to cut budgets, it is usually line items that influence the culture that are more difficult to measure that are cut in the interest of efficiency and cost savings.  Even luxury brands have cut so much to their own detriment that they have a difficult time maintaining excellence compared to the past. Leadership needs to walk the walk and breathe the culture every day.  Peter shares an example of a property that ranked 240 out of 250 in the portfolio regarding service scores, and he went in as the GM role to fix the culture.  For the first six months, he spent multiple hours a day focusing on training employees across all departments.  When it was time for Peter to move to another project, the property increased its ranking to the 30s, due to his focus on culture. A few years later, the property was sold at a $9 million profit.  Stock value is important, but we are in the people business, and the culture drives the value of the business.   Embracing crazy ideas “People know me here for very silly, crazy ideas.” Florida Atlantic University, and Peter specifically, became widely known throughout the hospitality industry in the early days of the pandemic for offering FAU's Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management for free.  The idea came from realizing that everyone in the hospitality industry was at home; many of them were furloughed and needed to keep occupied. Peter's idea was embraced immediately by the dean, and plans were put into action.  Normally, about 100 people complete the certificate a year, so an optimistic projection was set for 500 due to offering it complimentary.  As word got out, the program generated 77,000 enrollments, and more than 85% of those who enrolled completed it. This initiative, which started as a crazy idea, went viral, leading to significant donations to keep the program going at an affordable cost, incredible exposure for the university, and an immense amount of gratitude from participants.   Flexible employment “What if we let employees pick the benefits that they want?” The challenge today is to find quality talent who is passionate about the job amidst other industries that allow remote work and more lenient hours.  Peter's focus for the next five years is to help employers in the hospitality industry be more flexible.  Flexibility for one person might be a workweek consisting of four 10-hour days, and for another employee, it might be a daycare benefit instead of medical.  Benefits such as pet care, rent subsidy, or partial car allowance are benefits that won't appeal to everyone, but for those that they do appeal to, they resonate strongly. There needs to be a meaningful hook beyond the hourly or salary wage to attract the best talent.  If employees could pick their own benefits from a buffet-like offering, it creates a more meaningful and personalized employment experience.   To contact Peter, connect with him on LinkedIn or email him at ricci1@fau.edu.  To learn more about FAU's Certificate of Hospitality and Tourism, click here. Sharpen your pencil and grab a seat because "Class Is In Session".  This week on Don't Look Under The Bed,  Niki and Robin have a conversation with Dr. Peter Ricci, Director of the Florida Atlantic University Hospitality and Tourism Management Program. The program prepares students for management positions in multiple segments of the world's largest service industry.  Upon completion, graduates enjoy various professional roles in a variety of industries including: resorts, hotels, restaurants, private clubs, meeting and event planning corporations, casinos, cruise lines, sports facilities, theme parks and more. Dr. Ricci talks about why and how he developed the Hospitality and Tourism Management Certificate during the pandemic, what happened when he expected a few hundred to respond and received 77,000 registrations.  We also discussed WHY there is hospitality candidate shortage, the future of the industry and so much more.  Dr. Ricci is a true Hospitality Hero! MANTL represents a range of skincare products for the Face and Scalp that are inspired by bald folks, but work for everyone. The brand aims to support men with information, products, and a supportive community of co-conspirators, creating the space for you to move forward—free from the baggage and stereotypes of the past, empowering you to live your fullest life. The Bald Journey is the process that many men go through as they experience hair loss. It's not always a linear process, but the common phases that happen as an individual moves through this experience include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Peter Ricci, Co-Founder at MANTL about how the brand which makes skincare for balding men was launched. Peter started losing his hair in his mid twenties and later, with the support of his wife, decided to shave it all off. He then realised that women have a huge selection of skincare lines available to them whereas men didn't, especially for the scalp. Our host Peter Brooker and Peter Ricci talk about their personal experiences of going bald, how MANTL product differs from others, the importance of SPF, how funding was raised, and the psychology of shaving your head for the first time. Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. We promise to only send you the good stuff.
