Beginning with contemporary efforts to reckon with the legacy of white supremacy in America, Jones returns to the fateful year when a little-known church doctrine emerged that shaped the way five centuries of European Christians would understand the “discovered” world and the people who populated it. Along the way, he shows us the connections between Emmett Till and the Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto in the Mississippi Delta, between the lynching of three Black circus workers in Duluth and the mass execution of thirty-eight Dakota men in Mankato, and between the murder of 300 African Americans during the burning of Black Wall Street in Tulsa and the Trail of Tears. From this vantage point, Jones shows how the enslavement of Africans was not America's original sin but, rather, the continuation of acts of genocide and dispossession flowing from the first European contact with Native Americans. These deeds were justified by people who embraced the 15th century Doctrine of Discovery: the belief that God had designated all territory not inhabited or controlled by Christians as their new promised land. This reframing of American origins explains how the founders of the United States could build the philosophical framework for a democratic society on a foundation of mass racial violence—and why this paradox survives today in the form of white Christian nationalism. Through stories of people navigating these contradictions in three communities, Jones illuminates the possibility of a new American future in which we finally fulfill the promise of a pluralistic democracy. Robert P. Jones is the CEO and Founder of PRRI and a leading scholar and commentator on religion, culture, and politics. Robert P. Please join us for the most popular of our re-runs thus far. It's the return of Episode 55 with Professor Christopher Snyder on Tolkien and Virtue Ethics! In this episode, I am joined by Christopher Snyder, professor of history and director of British Studies at Mississippi State University, to discuss J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction and virtue ethics. We discuss Tolkien's background , training, academic work and influences, how to think about his fiction and its enduring value, and what role virtue plays in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Drawing on arguments from his latest book, Hobbit Virtues, Chris and I discuss the role of imagination in the moral life and why Tolkien isn't just or even primarily for children. As always, I hope you enjoy our conversation. Christopher Snyder became the first dean of the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State University in 2011. He is Professor of History and Director of British Studies at MSU, an affiliated faculty member in the Department of English, and was a History Research Fellow at the University of Oxford from 2014 to 2019. In episode 29 we peek back in time and look at the future that comes from the past, exploring the field of Archives with Senior Manager of the McDonald's Golden Archives, Archivist Mike Bullington. As an information gathering profession, often thought to be buried in old relics and secret data, Mike shares how he turns the knowledge into action, amplified by people throughout the organization, by making people care about the past. Mike shares the process of deciding when something is valuable enough to keep - how to see its intrinsic value - and why he relies on collecting stories told first hand by their creators. Importantly, Mike speaks to why we must keep those items that are shameful parts of our past, as they speak to the truth of the context of time in which they existed, and retell stories as they were remembered.Jo and Mike reflect on the difference between digital items versus those that are physically tangible, how things like letters and books are remembered differently even if they hold the same information. And how, no matter what the format, what's most important is that the artefacts of the past are illuminated through storytelling, that they are fact checked for accuracy, and of course that the stories of the past are not lost, especially by those voices previously muted.--To look outside, Mike speak to younger people who are coming into the field and have knowledge of new information-keeping tools. Being around young people also keeps Mike full of fresh ideas, as his mum liked to say. He also accesses a broad array of sources, from literature and the archives community, to stay abreast of the latest practices, and exchange tools and resources. --Michael Bullington is a certified archivist and the senior manager for McDonald's Golden Archives. He is responsible for ensuring that the legacy of the McDonald's brand is preserved in support of the business. Prior to joining McDonald's, Mike served as an archivist for Kraft Foods Inc. and Rush Medical Center. He previously served as President of the Academy of Certified Archivists, Chair of the Illinois State Archives Advisory Board and the Illinois State Records Advisory Board. Mike is a Member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, the Society of American Archivists, the Midwest Archive Conference and the Chicago Area Archivists. Across Marshall's insights and anecdotes, the conversation returns repeatedly to the importance of maintaining perspective, trusting the process, telling the truth, and protecting your peace. Marshall introduces the idea of happiness as a product of alignment between aspirations, ambitions and day-to-day actions; and the deep mindset shift to go from being a high individual achiever to an effective leader of an organization. During my career I have had several opportunities to sit in lecture halls and listen to Chief Dennis Compton share some of the wisdom he has gleaned over 50 years in the fire service. He taught us that one should “never sacrifice a relationship for an outcome”, that we need to “become politically competent”, and be aware of what behaviors and procedures that we “institutionalize.” In episode 68 Chief Compton and I chatted about his journey into the fire service, how things have changed and how important relationships are to a healthy organization. We talked about these important topics and so much more. Give it a listen and please enjoy. A little about our guest… Dennis Compton serves as a respected Executive Advisor for national, state, and local fire service and homeland security organizations. He was the Fire Chief in Mesa, Arizona for six years and Assistant Fire Chief in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served for 28 years. Chief Compton has Chaired the IFSTA Executive Board and also Chaired the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) National Advisory Council (NAC), where he continues to represent IFSTA. Chief Compton Chaired the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) Board of Directors for well over a decade and served as the Secretary of the International Public Safety Data Institute (IPSDI) Board of Directors as well. He has also served on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Board of Directors. Dennis is a widely recognized speaker and author. He has written many articles and chapters for publications, including five of his own books – the two latest being: 1) Progressive Leadership Principles, Concepts, and Tools; and 2) Mental Aspects of Performance for Firefighters and Fire Officers.
