This week we're joined by fellow podcasters Joshua Toomey and Chris Akin as we go over The Best & Worst of Pantera! With the Texas metal legends making news recently with the reunion of Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with drummer Charlie Benante and guitarist Zakk Wylde, we figured it's as good a time as any to look back on this incredible band's musical catalog.Starting with 1990's 'Cowboys from Hell,' Pantera blazed a whole new path for thrash and metal music. The Abbott brothers; Vinny Paul and Dimebag Darrell, cemented their place in music history and begun a run with Anselmo and Brown that hasn't been equalled. The subsequent releases 'Vuglar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill,' and 'Reinventing the Steel' helped the band lay claim as one of the most influential metal bands of all-time.In this long-form discussion, we all share our thoughts on these albums, tell stories of how they personally affected us, and a lot more while picking our favorite and least favorite from each album. This was no easy task but we think you'll enjoy it. We also discuss the 101 Proof Live album as well as some of the b-sides and rarities that Pantera churned out over the years. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Pantera and SHARE with a friend! Judas Priest's success skyrocketed in the early 1980's. Along with their boom in fame, came a decline in Rob Halford's emotional and physical health. In the second episode of the two episode arc, host Jon Wiederhorn delves into Halford's inability to be himself in the public eye. Eventually Halford would temporarily split from the band, enabling him to explore his music and come out publicly. Hear members of Judas Priest, At the Gates, and Pantera talk about the band and Rob Halford's journey to becoming a metal music icon. FROM THIS EPISODE: Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford talks about losing control to alcohol and drug addiction. Hear the story of when he set off a fire extinguisher in a Japanese businessman's hotel room and the high octane stage stunts Judas Priest put on during their tours. Halford remembers the people the metal industry lost to suicide and his traumatic experience with overdosing. And, how the gay community was used as a scapegoat during the AIDS epidemic. Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill recalls the unravelling and eventual break up of Judas Priest. Guitarist Glenn Tipton shares about touring less and dealing with depression after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Pantera's vocalist Philip Anselmo talks about how it must have been a relief for Rob Halford to perform after coming out and that fans still loved him. At the Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg discusses the importance of Judas Priest album “Stained Glass” to him as a singer. This episode further explores the impact heroin, a drug some called the angel of death, had on some metal musicians in the 80's, 90's and beyond. Host Jon Wiederhorn and many of metal's biggest names share outrageous stories that include Ministry's drug-fueled visit with William S. Burroughs, Jane's Addiction's adventure through New York City's Alphabet City to score dope, and Guns N' Roses' failed attempt to smuggle heroin onto a flight to Tokyo. Included are interviews with Ratt, as the episode also examines the tragic downfall and AIDS and heroin-related death of their guitarist Robbin Crosby. Members of Eyehategod, Pantera, and many more reveal stories of survival and the pains of addiction. This is the second episode of a two episode arc. FROM THIS EPISODE: Eyehategod vocalist Mike IX Williams describes his self-destructive mentality behind doing drugs. Hear Alan Niven, former manager of Guns N' Roses, recall an incident when members of the band tried to smuggle drugs on a flight to Japan. Pantera's vocalist Philip Anselmo describes how he felt broken after taking heroin and other narcotics to deal with the pain of a back injury. Lead guitarist of Jane's Addiction Dave Navarro walks through when he and the band scored drugs before a big show at Madison Square Garden. Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen recollects how William S. Burroughs wouldn't let the band into his house unless they had brought heroin. Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer recounts how guitarist Robbin Crosby couldn't hold it together during recording sessions due to his struggle with addiction. Deeply affected by guitarist Robbin Crosby's death, Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy says that was the reason he admitted himself into rehab. In honor of episode 333 we’re spinning our Top 5 Pantera Songs! It’s been 18 years since the last Pantera studio release and both Vinnie and Dime are no longer with us. But even so, the music they left behind still reverberates today. With the exception of the lesser-known “Glamtera” years, Pantera burst onto a turbulent music world. Indeed, the early 90's were a time of great transition. Notably, grunge was driving out “hair” metal; causing divisions among the music-buying public. Brothers Vinnie and Darrell Abbott, Rex Brown, and Philip Anselmo lit a fire that burned bright and inspired thousands. Considering the environment, for a metal band from Texas to capture the public’s attention and unite different cliques is remarkable. Additionally, the wild, untamed stories of excess while on tour only helped to build the Pantera legend. Top 5 Pantera Songs   Choosing our Top 5 Pantera Songs was no easy task. Since both of us are huge fans, we could have easily picked five contenders off each album! This week we give your our favorites. They come from such classic sonic platters as Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill, Official Live: 101 Proof, and Reinventing the Steel. Pantera is no stranger to Decibel Geek Podcast. We’ve featured their music several times and even devoted a couple of previous episodes to the Cowboys from Hell. Few guitarists can hold a joint to Dimebag Darrell, Pantera's insanely talented axe man from Pantego, Texas. He was a singularly talented human being, and if you've heard of Pantera, you've no doubt considered giving up a normal life's pursuits in order to be more like one Darrell Abbott. I spent my teenage years emulating Dimebag Darrell, but I never got beyond chugging along to the riffs from 'Far Beyond Driven.' I was a bit of a metal-head, and along with Metallica's James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, Dimebag was my hero. If you're not astounded by this dude's guitar playing, you and I can never be blood brothers. When Dimebag Darrell was murdered on December 8, 2004, I literally punched a tree down in my backyard. It was inconceivable that someone so full of life and joy be struck down at such a young age. (He was 38.) Despite the band's dark themes and messages, Pantera was a band that focused on joy. Pure, raucous, hellacious joy. Dimebag Darrell represented youthful love of metal, and his death was an augur of a different age for me. It's one of the strangest and most bizarre true crime scenarios to play out in a public setting, especially where a heavy metal band is concernded. A crazed fan named Nathan Gale ended Dimebag Darrell's life at a Damageplan show in Columbus, Ohio in 2004. He was angry over the band breaking up and possibly by Pantera lead singer Philip Anselmo's fiery words in an interview mere weeks before. Due to that and some degeneration in his mental capacity, he jumped the fence at the Alrosa Villa Club and rushed the stage, pulling a 9mm Beretta in the process. He shot Dimebag Darrell in the head at point-blank range. He fired into the crowd and tried desperately to find Dimebag's brother, Vinnie Paul, in order to end his life as well. It was a local cop who ended the horror by shooting Nathan Gale with a police-issue shotgun. Despite the horrific circumstances of his death, 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott's legacy lives on in the wonderful music he created with his friends Rex Brown and Phillip Anselmo, and his brother, Vinnie Paul. You can find Pantera's albums anywhere you steal music. Check out the Pantera Behind the Music for more information.

This interview with Warbeast Drummer Joey "Blue' Gonzalez was conducted on December 9th 2012 by Japan Nick of WMSC 90.3's Japan Nick's Rock and Metal Pandemonium. Joey Gonzalez is a Dallas, Texas based drummer who is a full time member for Warbeast as well as Philip Anselmo, and does live work for Hank Williams III and Protest. He has been out to Europe twice, once with Hank Williams III and just recently getting back from the Warbeast/Down Tour with a great many performances in Germany. He joined Texas Metal Alliance which is now known as Warbeast at the age of 17. People he views as teachers/mentors include Philip Anselmo, Marzi Montazeri, Bruce Corbitt, Scott Shelby, and Hank Williams III. This coming year Joey will be appearing on 3 albums including The War of the Gargantuas Split with 2 Philip Anselmo songs paired with the Birth of a Pyscho and IT songs which have been featured in the setlists of a great many live Warbeast concerts, Warbeast’s Destroy album, and Philip Anselmo’s Solo Album Walk Through Exits Only. There has been talk of a music video for Warbeast perhaps being BloodMoon ; an upcoming track from the Destroy Album that’s a pretty have fun with it type track with the whole werewolf scene deal going on. It’s not the most serious stuff in the world, Warbeast tries to pick songs that they can have the most fun in a music video, make people laugh but still get the essence of the song through. Major talking points include Joey Gonzalez's first days in Texas Metal Alliance which is now called Warbeast, the story of Bruce Corbitt bringing Joey into the band as a full member with a story about a trip to the Rockstar Sportsbar. New songs for the upcoming album Destroy were discussed such as Nobody, War of the Worlds, BloodMoon and the Day Of were discussed. The memory of the final show with Down from the European Tour with a special perhaps one time only performance of The Terrible Terribles, a Spanish band comprised of Joey Gonzalez on lead vocals singing in Spanish, Phil Anselmo on drums and a number of techs from the European production of Down comprised the band. The War of the Garguantuas story and how it developed over two years is thoroughly explained. A discussion on the preparations that needed to take place and afterthoughts on the European Tour were spoken about. Song Writing with Philip Anselmo, Scott Shelby, and preparing for live performances with Hank Williams III were gone over in an depth style.
