In this gripping episode, Stuart and Jacob tackle the intense world of "Cape Fear," comparing the original 1962 film directed by J. Lee Thompson with Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake. They dig deep into the chilling narratives of revenge and obsession, exploring the contrasting portrayals of Max Cady by Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro. What makes De Niro's performance so unpredictable, like a more deranged Daffy Duck? How do the character arcs of Sam Bowden differ between the two films given their respective actors? And how can the 1991 version push the boundaries of horror and suspense in ways that the original could only hint at?Also featured in this episode are diatribes about "Civilization 7", the correct amount of references to "The Simpsons", a love for Joe Don Baker, and a game that Jacob slapped together in an afternoon and forces Stuart to play. In episode four of our Visionary Remakes season, we cross-examine two versions of Cape Fear, the original starring a creepy and enigmatic Robert Mitchum, and the 1991 remake from Martin Scorsese starring a crazed and manic Robert De Niro.Special Guest: Amanda Jane Stern - writer, producer and star of the award-winning psychosexual thriller Perfectly Good Moment. Streaming now on Tubi! Co-host of the podcast Don't Be Crazy. Both versions of Cape Fear are anchored by dazzling performances of the antagonist, Max Cady. Robert Mitchum reduces the overtly violent nature of Cady in order to play up his cleverness, obsessiveness , and wiliness. De Niro goes over the top in his version of Cady, playing him as zany, an almost comical but brutal cartoon villain. This difference underlines the drastically opposed tones, vibes, and outcomes of each version of Cape Fear. The 1962 original focused on the limits of justice. It clearly asks and attempts to answer where the line between enforced law and moral justice lives, albeit wrapped in a juicy and sensational B-movie plot. Scorsese's 1991 remake does not ask those questions, but it does drench us in pulpy genre stimuli: graphic violence, improprietous sexuality, and domestic disputes. The debate we have in this episode is whether either film is successful in its intended mission. Is the original too flat for a genre flick and perhaps too lofty to escape pretension? Do Marty and De Niro swing away and strike out, can a trashy thriller be too much even if it attempts to do nothing more than shock?

Martin Scorsese went full Hitchcock for the remake of the thriller, Cape Fear. Extreme closeups, ominous music, and unusual camera angles pulled the director into new waters back in 1991. And, much like DeNiro's Max Cady to a human cheek, audiences ate it up. But now, decades later, was this dark tale worth retelling? Did Nick Nolte's evidence-hiding lawyer deserve this torture? And does the film's bonkers "houseboat of horrors" final act sink this sick flick or elevate it to iconic status? The Old Roommates close all the blinds (a few times) and revisit it all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. New details surrounding Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps have emerged with the release of this official synopsis: Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic , Sue Storm/Invisible Woman , Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus' plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren't bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal. While this synopsis may be sparse on specificity, it does officially confirm Julia Garner's role to be that of a Silver Surfer, which was strongly suspected until now. In the wake of some big announcements and updates regarding the franchise's future on the big screen, Star Wars has removed at least one of its upcoming film projects from the calendar. Last week, Disney pulled the untitled Star Wars flick occupying a December 18, 2026 release and replaced it with the recently announced Ice Age 6. Elsewhere on the small screen, fans can look forward to more information on Andor Season 2 soon, with the series on display in the coveted cover feature of Empire Magazine's November issue, available November 21. Our pal Jimmy Gunn is back to his antics providing some seeming clarity on Peacemaker's canon status within his DCU. While speaking with IGN, the filmmaker explained that nothing is canon ‘unless you see it in Creature Commandos,' or is released after that series, which debuts on Max December 5. Gunn went on to clarify that the new canon would include prior events and characters that are referenced in Creature Commandos, which would include all of Peacemaker's first season, barring one scene. “The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,” The Assembled behind the scenes web documentary for Agatha All Along was suspiciously released via Youtube rather than Disney Plus… While speaking at Vulture Festival, Elizabeth Olsen shared that returning to Marvel feels like a choice driven by character-focused storytelling, not an obligation, and acknowledged superhero films' role in making indie projects possible. Lady Gaga has been cast in season 2 of Wednesday on Netflix. At this time, it is not known what the extent of her role will be. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Conan O'Brien will host the upcoming 97th Oscar's ceremony. Sophie Turner is in negotiations to star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Prime Video's high-profile series adaptation of the video game franchise from Emmy-winning Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Sony has hired Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk to write an updated version of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands that starred Seth Green and Jessica Alba. Jason Reitman is serving as a producer and a director has not yet been announced. A rebooted Friday Night Lights series is in the works at Universal TV. The reboot is believed to be a new story with new characters not attached to the original. HBO's Lanterns has added Never Have I Ever star Poorna Jagannathan to the cast. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans' Christmas movie Red One came in at the lower end of expectations with a $32.1 million domestic outing. Apple TV+ has ordered a 10-episode series adaptation of Cape Fear with Javier Bardem starring as Max Cady, a notorious killer seeking revenge on a couple of attorneys. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese will executive produce the series.

Dear Mr. De Niro,I trust you had a wonderful evening at the Oscars. Watching you bask in the comforting embrace of the special people was a reminder of who you really are—a movie star.By the looks of it, the Oscars are back. They have a host now and they gave their top prize to a movie people actually saw. It won a whopping 7 Oscars. There were dance numbers and jokes, beautiful people in their finery—a grand celebration to revive the lifeless body of Hollywood.I was shocked that they kept politics mostly out of it—well, until near the end when Jimmy Kimmel just had to bring in Trump—not just to mock him but to show the country which side all of you are on and to let them know, in no uncertain terms, that they are not invited to this party.Turns out, Trump really did write that:But might I say, Mr. De Niro, none of you seem able to figure out if Trump is such a criminal/fascist/dictator/rapist/racist, why he's kicking Biden's ass in the polls six ways from Sunday? Funny, isn't it, Mr. De Niro? Didn't Bill Maher ask you this same question on Real Time? You didn't have an answer except to say that Trump is a “monster,” a “mean, nasty, and hateful person.”And that if “We want to live in a world that we want to live and enjoy living in, or live in a nightmare. Vote for Trump, and you'll get the nightmare.”Let me get this straight. You said that you would never play Trump because there is “Nothing redeemable in him.”So, Max Cady in Cape Fear, Al Capone in The Untouchables, and William Hale in Killers of the Flower Moon had redeemable traits? They were all mass murderers, Mr. De Niro, yet you not only delighted in playing those roles but also earned Oscar nominations for two of them. And I'm betting a nice fat paycheck at the end of the day.Al Capone was connected to hundreds of murders, William Hale committed a near-genocide of the Osage people, and Max Cady, well, need we be reminded?Trump is not nice to you, Mr. De Niro. That is true. He isn't very nice to Hollywood or Jimmy Kimmel, or to the establishment. But did it ever occur to you that so many people love him because he isn't one of you? And that your crazy ramblings about him only make his supporters love him even more? You, like Hollywood, like the Democrats, like Bill Maher, have become so disconnected from the lives of Americans that you can't possibly understand why Trump is by far preferable. You seem to think you have the right to tell them what they should want, what they should care about, and that your own personal happiness should be a factor they consider.Have you driven through any of our cities lately? Have you driven down to the border? Have you gone to a grocery store? Have you gone into Walmart only to see everything locked up, from baby formula to batteries to deodorant? Have you driven across America to see what this country is really like?I'm guessing not. Why would you? You go from the film set to your multi-million dollar property, and you turn on MSNBC and CNN and you RAGE RAGE against the man they keep telling you is a dictator and fascist who will never leave office, take Bill Maher off the air, and then hunt you down like you're Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor. Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. On this episode, we take a deep dive into Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller Cape Fear, itself based on John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, in which lawyer Sam Bowden and his family are terrorised by Max Cady, a violent rapist whom Sam testified against in a trial that helped put him in prison for more than a decade. In crafting his own exceptional take on the source materials, screenwriter Wesley Strick twists the knife still further, by making Sam Bowden the lawyer who defended Cady, rather than merely testifying against him, burying testimony that could potentially have exonerated Cady, despite his guilt. In addition, Strick added marital infidelity into the mix, muddying the moral and ethical waters of the story and enhancing the female roles of Sam's wife and daughter, played here by Academy Award® winner Jessica Lange and newcomer Juliette Lewis, as well as adding a brand new character, Lori, played by Scorsese's then girlfriend Illeana Douglas. Leading the cast are Nick Nolte as Sam and Robert De Niro as Max Cady, while three members of Thompson's cast – Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam – make cameo appearances, Elmer Bernstein retools Bernard Herrmann's original score for the new production, and the whole thing is shot by veteran British cinematographer Freddie Francis. Even on paper, it's quite a heady mix. Everything in Scorsese's remake, originally intended to be directed by Steven Spielberg, is turned up to 11, but although many assume that this was Scorsese's influence, much of what we see in the film was present in Strick's very first draft, and I've always been fascinated by the evolution of the story from its relatively straightforward dual source material as straight thriller to grand guignol monster movie, so I was thrilled when Wes kindly agreed to join me for his first full audio commentary for the 1991 film, now that, as he points out, more time has passed since his version was released than the 29 years that passed between the original and remake. It's a sweaty, jowl-shaking good time as Lex and Dunc discuss what freaked them out and what was maybe too over-the-top. Minds are most certainly blown, but is it Lex's? Or is it Duncan's when he has to confront what Lex really thinks of Robert De Niro's iconic performance? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Show Notes This week we travel to the coast with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in 1962's Cape Fear. Mitchum's Max Cady is dangerous – for his predilections and his cunningness and Peck's Sam Bowden is really very little match for him. The menace that Cady casts over the entirety of the film is palpable and you will be concerned for every girl and woman you see, with good reason.   Recommendations: Wakanda Forever (In theaters)   Next up: The Sixth Sense (1999)                                                                                            Email us at latecomers@gmail.com Twitter: @latecomerspod Find Amity @ www.amityarmstrong.com and @AmityArmstrong on Twitter Our Facebook group is here for those who consent: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1754020081574479/ This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

It's our season finale and we were delighted to get back into a cinema for a live screening and podcast recording, our first one since Covid. The venue was the spectacular Garden cinema in Covent Garden, a beautiful art-deco retro venue where we hope to be holding regular screenings in the autumn. As part of their celebrating Film Noir season, we screened and discussed the 1962 psychological noir Cape Fear directed J. Lee Thompson. The film features what is considered one of the most powerfully chilling performances in cinema history: Robert Mitchum as Max Cady. Also starring Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen Lori Martin, Martin Balsam and Telly Savalas, and featuring a Bernard Herrmann score, it's a film that tested social attitudes and the censors with its subject matter. Dario presented the screening with guest Mary Wild (@psycstar on Twitter), the co-host of the Projections Podcast (@ProjectionsPod). As an expert in psychoanalytic film theory it was fantastic to have Mary's critical insight on a film and genre that really does lend itself to psychological reading.  Dario and Neil continue the conversation and also reflect on the 15th season of the podcast. Something we can hardly believe. We thank you for your continued support of the show and look forward to season 16 beginning in September 2022. Show Notes The Garden Cinema, Covent Garden. Along for the ride is multi-hyphenate film journalist Hanna Flint (@HannaFlint), who helps us unpack its strange production history, its relationship to the noirish original, and how Marty warped an Amblin blockbuster towards his particular sensibilities.

No me obligues a destruirte. Luke, todavía no te has dado cuenta de tu importancia. Sólo has empezado a descubrir tu poder. Únete a mí y yo completaré tu entrenamiento. Combinando nuestras fuerzas, podemos acabar con esta beligerancia y poner orden en la galaxia. Si conocieras el poder del reverso tenebroso. Obi Wan no te dijo lo que le pasó a tu padre. No, yo soy tu padre. Examina tus sentimientos. Sabes que es verdad. Luke, tú puedes destruir al emperador. Él se ha percatado de eso. Únete a mí y juntos dominaremos la galaxia como padre e hijo. Ven conmigo. Es el único camino”: Darth Vader en 'El imperio contraataca'. “¿Qué está usted haciendo Dave? Dave, creo que tengo derecho a que conteste a mi pregunta. Ya sé que no me he portado del todo bien, pero ahora puedo asegurarle con absoluta certeza que todo irá bien otra vez. Me siento mucho mejor. De veras que sí. Mire, Dave. Usted está trastornado por esto. Debería tomar una píldora para la fatiga y una vez tranquilo pensar las cosas de nuevo. Ya sé que recientemente he tomado unas decisiones equivocadas pero puedo asegurarle que mi trabajo volverá a la normalidad. Tengo todavía el mayor entusiasmo y la máxima confianza en la misión, y quiero ayudarle. Dave, deténgase. Deténgase, ¿quiere? ¿Quiere detenerse, Dave? Deténgase, Dave. Tengo miedo. Tengo miedo, Dave. Dave. Mi cabeza se va. Siento que se va. Me doy cuenta. Me doy cuenta. “Yo no soy ningún tarado.

Gregory Peck headlined the 1962 film Cape Fear, but it was Robert Mitchum's portrayal of serial rapist Max Cady that scandalized audiences.

J. Lee Thompson & Martin Scorsese: Cape Fear  On this week's second episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I sit down to discuss a B-Movie masterpiece, J. Lee Thompson's 1961 Noir Classic, Cape Fear. Featuring a wonderful cast including Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen, Barrie Chase, Martin Balsam, and Telly Savalas, Thompson fashions a taut, heart-pounding thriller propelled by an incredible performance by Robert Mitchum as convicted rapist Max Cady. Voted one of the greatest villains of all time, Mitchum is truly extraordinary. Almost thirty years later Martin Scorsese would remake this film as an exercise in genre filmmaking that would reunite him for the seventh time with Academy Award winner, Robert De Niro. Along with Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Joe Don Baker, and cameos from the film's original stars - Gregory Peck, Martin Balsam, and Robert Mitchum this is an exceptional remake even if it happens to come up short in comparison to the original. Take a listen. We hope you have as much fun as we had recording. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. As always thank you so much.

This week, we’re detailing the unsettling exploits of possibly the most talented and dedicated stalker in the history of cinema, Max Cady, in the 1991 remake of Cape Fear. The story follows Max Cady as he is released after 14 years in a Georgia prison. Max goes to a small North Carolina town to get revenge on his former defense attorney, Sam Bowden, for burying evidence that could have reduced his prison sentence at the time of conviction. Max’s plan is to get his retribution by inflicting physical and emotional pain on everyone in Sam’s life. Sam is willing to go to great lengths to get Max to leave town and to protect his wife and young daughter from Max’s inappropriate advances. Max’s desire to teach Sam about loss comes to a dramatic climax on The Bowden Family’s houseboat on the waterways of Cape Fear. How much time did Max spend researching the Bowden’s lives before he set his plan in motion? Are Sam and Leigh the least attentive parents in the world? Why doesn’t Sam start spreading the word about Max to everyone else in their small town? Why do both Sam and Danielle refer to the family dog as Leigh’s dog? What does Leigh do for a living? What makes Max’s skin invincible? Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends.
