KISS. - Aerosmith debuterer, de transvestit klædte The New York Dolls lancerer deres præ-punk/glam og Iggy & The Stooges udviser frenetisk rå kraft.

- "Smoke on the Water".

- The MC5 besørger Motörheads senere eksistens.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, September 29, is the feast of the Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. This feast, superseded by the Sunday Liturgy, is called "Michaelmas" in many countries. The three Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, are the only angels named in Sacred Scripture, and all three have important roles in the history of salvation. Michael (Who is like God?) was the archangel who fought against Satan and all his evil angels, defending all the friends of God. He is the protector of all humanity from the snares of the devil. Gabriel (Strength of God) announced to Zachariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary, the birth of Jesus. His greeting to the Virgin, "Hail, full of grace," is one of the most frequent prayers. Raphael (Medicine of God) was the archangel who cared for Tobias on his journey. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith.  The faithful join with the angels to adore the Trinitarian God. Angels are pure, created spirits, heavenly beings of a higher order than humans. The name angel means servant or messenger of God.  Angels have intellect and will and are immortal.  They have no bodies. They are distinct from saints, which men can become. They are a vast multitude, but each is a person. Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible. In ascending order, the choirs or classes are 1) Angels, 2) Archangels, 3) Principalities, 4) Powers, 5) Virtues, 6) Dominations, 7) Thrones, 8) Cherubim, and 9) Seraphim.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come! Hi! Trapper Jack here. Spoiler alert. In this podcast episode, we have three seminarians telling the exact same story of being young, strong swimmers, plunging into the ocean and being carried out to a watery grave by a strong riptide.   If this sounds a bit familiar, the Holy Spirit is going to build on this recent topic. In all three drowning seminarian stories, frantic prayers were prayed, and divinely sent angels changed the course of history. God intervened in order that these three men in formation became Fr. John, Fr. Michael, and Fr. Paul. All will swear that they were saved by God to serve Christ. But that is not the end of the story.   This is also a story where Jesus teaches us a lesson about feeling underwater in life. I've added a great message from Fr. John Ricardo about being saved from going under in all possible ways. Enjoy the podcast!   Link to Fr. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Deontological Constraints on Animal Products, published by emre kaplan on April 9, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction There is a memetically powerful argument within animal advocacy circles which goes like the following: "We would never ask child abusers to commit less child abuse, so we can't ask other people to reduce their animal product consumption. We must ask them to end it." In this post I try to construct and evaluate a part of this argument. First, I explain my motivation for evaluating the strength of this argument. Second, I note that it's morally permissible to ask for reductions in some kinds of wrongdoings and list different ways animal production consumption can be morally wrong. I create the category of "non-negotiably wrong" to refer to actions that can't be asked to be reduced. Third, I look into whether animal product use might be non-negotiably wrong by listing several deontological constraints that might be non-negotiable. A Venn Diagram summarising results I don't have any strong conclusions. I aim to reduce my own confusion and get more input from professional moral philosophers on this topic through this post. I'm also not sure if I should keep writing such posts, so if this post is helpful to you in any way, please let me know. Many thanks to Michael St. Jules and Bob Fischer for their helpful feedback. All errors are my own. Motivation Some animal advocates argue for the following positions because they believe people have a non-negotiable duty to avoid consuming animal products: Only vegans can speak at animal advocacy events Only vegans can be members of animal advocacy organisations Non-vegans shouldn't join animal advocacy protests All animal advocacy organisations have a responsibility to prominently advocate for veganism because it's the main obligation to animals It's morally forbidden to use the following sentences because they condone some animal product use or don't explicitly reject all animal product use: Go vegetarian. Meat should be taxed. Our school should have Meatless Mondays. Costco should go cage-free. The default school meals at Grenoble should be vegetarian. The public schools in New York City should serve exclusively plant-based food on Fridays. Take the vegan-22 challenge, go vegan for 22 days. Maybe you should try going plant-based except for cheese. According to this line of argument, animal product use is not merely harmful(akin to carbon emissions) but also violation of a very strong moral constraint(akin to direct physical violence or owning slaves). It is non-negotiably wrong. For that reason, including non-vegans in animal advocacy is similar to including slave-owners in anti-slavery advocacy. Asking for a reduction in animal product use is akin to asking for a reduction in physical violence("don't beat your wife in January"). To clarify, as it is the case with many issues, there is a spectrum of opinions here. Some people will endorse some of the positions above while rejecting others. I have been sympathetic to these arguments when it comes to my own consumption. I'm very sympathetic to the idea that since animals are not well-represented, we're likely to have a bias against their interests. When animal interests and my own interests get into conflict, it makes sense for me to be extra cautious to compensate for my own bias. So I'm happy with being strict in avoiding animal products in clothing and food. On the other hand, I also suspect being too restrictive in animal advocacy might result in more animals being killed and tortured compared to alternatives. Some reasons offered are the following: There might be a Laffer curve to the behaviour change created by your demands. Being too demanding might result in less change than being moderately demanding. (Example: The New York City officials won...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Open Phil Should Allocate Most Neartermist Funding to Animal Welfare, published by Ariel Simnegar on November 19, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Thanks to Michael St. Jules for his comments. Key Takeaways The evidence that animal welfare dominates in neartermism is strong. Open Philanthropy (OP) should scale up its animal welfare allocation over several years to approach a majority of OP's neartermist grantmaking. If OP disagrees, they should practice reasoning transparency by clarifying their views: How much weight does OP's theory of welfare place on pleasure and pain, as opposed to nonhedonic goods? Precisely how much more does OP value one unit of a human's welfare than one unit of another animal's welfare, just because the former is a human? How does OP derive this tradeoff? How would OP's views have to change for OP to prioritize animal welfare in neartermism? Summary Rethink Priorities (RP)'s moral weight research endorses the claim that the best animal welfare interventions are orders of magnitude (1000x) more cost-effective than the best neartermist alternatives. Avoiding this conclusion seems very difficult: Rejecting hedonism (the view that only pleasure and pain have moral value) is not enough, because even if pleasure and pain are only 1% of what's important, the conclusion still goes through. Rejecting unitarianism (the view that the moral value of a being's welfare is independent of the being's species) is not enough. Even if just for being human, one accords one unit of human welfare 100x the value of one unit of another animal's welfare, the conclusion still goes through. Skepticism of formal philosophy is not enough, because the argument for animal welfare dominance can be made without invoking formal philosophy. By analogy, although formal philosophical arguments can be made for longtermism, they're not required for longtermist cause prioritization. Even if OP accepts RP's conclusion, they may have other reasons why they don't allocate most neartermist funding to animal welfare. Though some of OP's possible reasons may be fair, if anything, they'd seem to imply a relaxation of this essay's conclusion rather than a dismissal. It seems like these reasons would also broadly apply to AI x-risk within longtermism. However, OP didn't seem put off by these reasons when they allocated a majority of longtermist funding to AI x-risk in 2017, 2019, and 2021. I request that OP clarify their views on whether or not animal welfare dominates in neartermism. The Evidence Endorses Prioritizing Animal Welfare in Neartermism GiveWell estimates that its top charity (Against Malaria Foundation) can prevent the loss of one year of life for every $100 or so. We've estimated that corporate campaigns can spare over 200 hens from cage confinement for each dollar spent. If we roughly imagine that each hen gains two years of 25%-improved life, this is equivalent to one hen-life-year for every $0.01 spent. If you value chicken life-years equally to human life-years, this implies that corporate campaigns do about 10,000x as much good per dollar as top charities. … If one values humans 10-100x as much, this still implies that corporate campaigns are a far better use of funds (100-1,000x). Holden Karnofsky, "Worldview Diversification" (2016) "Worldview Diversification" (2016) describes OP's approach to cause prioritization. At the time, OP's research found that if the interests of animals are "at least 1-10% as important" as those of humans, then "animal welfare looks like an extraordinarily outstanding cause, potentially to the point of dominating other options". After the better part of a decade, the latest and most rigorous research funded by OP has endorsed a stronger claim: Any significant moral weight for animals implies that OP should prioritize animal welfare in ne...

Also ohne gewachsene Bahnhofs- und Haltestellenstrukturen, völlig neu.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Evaluating claims about ContraPest, published by Spencer Ericson on July 3, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: We conclude that there is some evidence against ContraPest's claims that the product is “humane,” “it is not an endocrine disruptor,” and “its effects are reversible.” The literature suggests that the active ingredients in ContraPest may cause bone loss, cancer, organ injury, immunosuppression, and endocrine disruption in rats. Any of these could be a risk factor for decreased well-being in rats. VCD may result in permanent sterility in rats over time or at high doses, and at low doses, it results in irreversible premature reproductive senescence. Epistemic status: Uncertain. This was about a 40-hour investigation by me, Spencer, a person with ~no biology background. I conclude that more research is needed into every question I pose. This post will be edited if new information comes in. Quirks: I say “we” because writing “I” in formal writing makes me feel weird. Where I say “We are not aware of studies.” I mean that I searched 3-4 relevant key terms on Google Scholar about that question and came up empty. Acknowledgements: I am grateful to Constance Li for sponsoring this project. I am grateful to Contance Li, Michael St. Jules, and Holly Elmore for feedback. I am grateful to two interviewees for their help. (None of the acknowledged people have endorsed or rigorously fact-checked my claims herein.) Introduction ContraPest is the first and only current EPA-approved contraceptive for Norway rats and roof rats. It was approved in 2016 and brought to market in 2021. ContraPest has received increasing attention; for example, it was featured in Time in March 2023. It is touted as a humane option for rat population control that could replace many use cases for rodenticides. Rodenticides tend to cause prolonged, painful deaths, both for rats and for other wild animals, so ContraPest is thought to be an opportunity to improve wild animal welfare. Its manufacturer, SenesTech, claims that “ContraPest is a non-lethal rodenticide/pesticide that does not bioaccumulate, it is not an endocrine disruptor, and its effects are reversible.” ContraPest contains two chemicals in small amounts, 4-vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD) and triptolide. VCD reduces fertility in female rats by depleting ovarian follicles, which mature into eggs. Triptolide reduces fertility in male and female rats by interrupting the development of ovarian follicles and sperm. However, as we will see below, these chemicals might have side effects like permanent reductions in fertility, cancer, bone loss, organ injury, immunosuppression, and hormone disruption at high doses. More research in needed into the one-time and repeated doses where these side effects become apparent in rats, animals that eat rats, other animals that might come into contact with ContraPest, and humans. We have yet to see a post that thoroughly and critically evaluates SenesTech's claims about ContraPest. However, we have come to know that “many cities” and at least one animal sanctuary that ran pilots of ContraPest did not continue to use the product due to their concerns about its effectiveness and side effects. To better understand how this product affects wild animal welfare, we attempt to evaluate SenesTech's claims below. You can skip to the Conclusion, or read the TL;DRs at the top of each section. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hit is not a big enough word for this adaptation's success in the 2000s. It won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2003 and broke all box office records in London's West End in 2008. The 2007 movie was directed by Adam Shankman and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken and continues the big box office that started with the original 1988 film. In today's episode, I am speaking with Mike St. Cyr, a fellow entrepreneur and high-performing real estate agent, who has faced his fears in numerous areas of his life ranging from his finances, his career, his education, and his relationships. Mike opens up about his experiences with fear over the course of his professional and financial journey and how those experiences have reframed his mindset towards how he shows up for himself and his responsibilities each day. We discuss how fear shows up in each of our lives differently; whether it shows up in the form of failure, rejection, judgment, or comparison, and how to recognize that it's fear and how to remain present in those moments of uncertainty. Mike shares that self-reflection and remaining connected to the present moment have been major catalysts in his journey to facing and overcoming his fears. TVC 582.1: Musician, historian, producer, and author Chuck Harter joins Ed for the first of two programs that will celebrate the life and career of Elvis Presley. Chuck helped produce I, Elvis, a three-part profile of The King that originally aired in 1992 on the syndicated magazine series Hard Copy. While working on this project, Chuck not only interviewed and got to know several members of the Memphis Mafia (including Charlie Hodge, Lamar Fike, Sonny West, Marty Lacker, Jerry Schilling, and Billy Smith), but obtained first-hand knowledge and insight into Elvis from the people who knew him best. With the highly anticipated biopic Elvis opening in theaters this week, Chuck and Ed take a look at some of the other notable portrayals of The King in movies and on television, including Kurt Russell in Elvis (ABC, 1979), the short-lived but critically acclaimed Elvis weekly series starring Michael St. Gerard (ABC, 1990), and Elvis Meets Nixon (1997).  Want to advertise/sponsor our show?
