Today, we are delighted to welcome Matthew Porter. Matthew is the CEO of the Professional Darts Corporation, more commonly known as the PDC, overseeing the sport of darts and it's  iconic tournaments, including the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.  Since his appointment in 2008, Matthew has played an integral role in building out the darts calendar, introducing events such as the European Championship and Players Championship Finals, the PDC World Cup of Darts and the European Tour, as well as the implementation of the PDC's development structure with Qualifying School, the Challenge Tour, and Youth Tour.  Previously, Matthew was Chief Executive of Leyton Orient Football Club, becoming the youngest CEO in the football league at the age of 26 when appointed. He is also Chairman of Matchroom Multi Sport. In today's show we discuss: World Darts Championship: How the flagship event over the Christmas period drives mass engagement for the sport. The incredible viewing figures for the 2024 Championship that culminated in over 4m for the final, making it the most viewed sporting event on Sky outside of football. The importance of capitalising on attention when you are lucky enough to have it in sport, and ensuring you don't let the opportunity to drive bigger and better engagement pass by. What are the key numbers around the event? What do sponsors want from their partnerships? How do media rights deals incorporate the rest of the calendar? Celebritisation of players: The rise of Luke Littler and how he became the face of the sport. What does it do for the wider darts community? This is something that has been happening long before Luke came along. How have the Smith's and Van Gerwen's of the world help develop the profile of the sport? Does darts have an image problem? Do the professionals now play a key part in encouraging young people to get involved in the sport and realise the opportunity a career in darts can present? How has social media been leveraged to engage a range of demographics all tuning into the darts for different reasons? You can't alienate the core audience but must speak to new fans. How do the players work together to positively promote themselves and the sport? The growth of the sport  Darts is a global sport, but it is heavily centred around the UK and Europe. How important is it to take darts to new countries to ensure the sport keeps developing? In which countries do the biggest opportunities lie from a participation and viewing perspective and how do you take advantage of this? Bringing in new sponsors and making the sport more attractive to industry outside of the ones that normally commercialise in the space will be a key way in expanding the reach of the sport. Providing greater financial opportunity through tour funding and prize money will allow for more people to commit to darts and pursue a career to a professional level. As we talked about at the start of the episode, we will also be highlighting some of the most inspiring people, stories, and organisations across sport once a month on the show. Welcome to another episode of the Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast. In today's episode, Rob interviews Barry Hearn, the Infamous Sporting Events Promoter & Founder of Matchroom Sport. Barry specialises in logistics and monetisation and has been hugely successful. He says that his success is composed of big breaks and luck. Rob and Barry discuss the details of Barry's success in life and business. They talk about how he made it from rags to riches. What is Barry's secret to confidence? What happened and why he was able to succeed in life and became a multi-millionaire. They discuss all these details and a lot more insider secrets to Barry's great life. KEY TAKEAWAYS         Your 100%. Place in mind that you will eventually get there.  You have to put yourself out there 100% in the expense of everybody else, wives, families, children, and friends. If you really want to succeed, you have to be relentless. In an aeroplane, what is the first instruction? Put on yourself first because you are absolutely no use to anybody if you are incapacitated. So, you put on yourself before you do your wives and children, and business, when you're growing a business, exactly the same. Look after yourself first.  Then your family then your community.         Everybody in this world is different. And it follows therefore that everybody is better in everybody else at something. The sad part of that is they very rarely find out what that is.         The secret of luck. When you have your luck is making the most of it. So, we all get a break. Some people don't recognize when that break is. Some people don't see the opportunity, that's just inefficiency. But when you do, that would be a lot, then you really got to go for it and that's the maximization of the luck. And that's' what really what Barry is good at.         Good reputation. You establish a good reputation. You operate with integrity. Sounds old-fashioned. You give people value for money, and you put a smile on people's faces. It is so much common sense. If everyone gets value for money, TV companies get ratings. If the sponsor gets exposure. If the puns got a great night out, is that not what we're trying to do anyway? So, just be better at it and do a better job. Work to make it work.         Stress. It is obviously an individual thing. Certain people react different ways. And no one can say they haven't had stress at some time because whether its family. People die and terrible things happen to you. But all you've got to do is remember that while you're here, everything is fine.         Sports. Sport is about occasions. Sports unite the whole country. It is the only time that it unites the whole country or the world. It transgresses any boundary. It creates memories and moments.         Social Media Marketing defines boundaries nowadays. Targeted market is a value to sponsors.         The most important thing about youngsters playing any sports is that they're happy and they enjoy it.         The ability to tell the truth. As he got older, he only ever tells the truth. And it's refreshing that he doesn't really care how he tells it to or whom he tells it to.         Advice. Make sure you're busy. Make sure you're enjoying yourself. Make sure you're smiling. Make sure, hopefully, you're contributing. And last but mainly, be selfish. Be very selfish. Just make sure when you finish, you've given it a hundred percent. Win, Lose or Draw. BEST MOMENTS “Some people would criticize me for being only an accountant. And I think, they are missing the point that that is how you run a business.” "I started off with Steve first 5 years. I think I taught him everything I could teach. And for the last 35 years, he's taught me more." “The sad thing is a lot of people look in the mirror and ask themselves a question, why didn't it happen to me? Without understanding the reason why it didn't. And why it didn't is because you aren't focused enough or you didn't make enough sacrifices. People talk about sacrifices without really understanding what it is.” “I have always been a dreamer and I have always been a predictor. Sometimes, I even get it right but, I mean my history was either a series of God-given big breaks or being just lucky.” “My mom locked me in a room. And it was Monday to Friday and Sunday. But I could go out Saturday. So from 18 to 21, I didn't go out. But I learned every single line of every single book. So, there's no way I way, I was ever going to fail.” “If you want something bad enough, you do it.” “You make it work. You work to make it work... It is not perfect, but we can get better. And we won't stop trying to get better, and eventually, we look at ourselves and say we did a good job.” “All I want is for people to say, ‘When's the next one?" “Don't waste a minute of your day... I don't waste a minute. And I enjoy every minute and if there's something I don't enjoy, I stop it straight away.” “If I work hard enough, I can average over a hundred. If I average over a hundred, I can make a living. If you are not good, six months later you say, it's not working out. Fair enough. You start seeing light at the end of the tunnel. And you just pray it's not a train coming towards you.” "The opportunity is there within the structure of most sports to progress if you have an ability. Unfortunately, in sports, it's a series of snakes and ladders. Early doors, there's an awful lot of ladders. Later on, you come across more and more snakes. And if you can negotiate, you're way past the snakes and just got the ladders, you will be a star my son, and if you don't, you will be normal." “It all comes down to character.” “Sometimes, it is good to know that we're only human.” “Business is exactly the same as sport. It is just another game. Don't get carried away with it. And you want to win. And the winning is what gets you up in the morning and drives you on.” “Telling the truth is important. The most important person to tell the truth to is yourself.” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ https://robmoore.com/podcast/ The Disruptive Entrepreneur Community https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Hearn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. The Objectification of Women

Moral Maze

That rich men attract beautiful women - and vice versa - has for centuries been obvious and unquestioned. Suddenly a few noisy scandals have started a social avalanche that some call the new puritanism. In the past week Formula 1 racing has abolished the 'grid girls' whose role had been to look glamorous in the company of racing drivers; the Professional Darts Corporation, in consultation with BBC TV, has done away with the 'walk-on girls' who had provided a similar service for the masters of the triple-twenty; and the UK's gambling regulator has threatened to boycott the world's largest gambling industry conference, accusing exhibitors of using 'scantily clad' women to attract people to their product displays. Reaching back into Victorian times for things to tut about, Manchester Art Gallery last week removed from display Waterhouse's painting 'Hylas and the Nymphs' - then, after a public outcry, put it back. Feminists such as Janet Street-Porter have welcomed all this. 'At last,' she says, 'we're moving out of the stone age.' Others think what women choose to do with their bodies is their own business, be they prostitutes, lap-dancers, fashion models or pretty waitresses flirting for tips. Do we want a world in which it's as bad to employ women for their looks as it would be to discriminate on the basis of race or religion? The objectification of women - our Moral Maze this week. Chaired by Michael Buerk, with Matthew Taylor, Claire Fox, Melanie Phillips and Giles Fraser.

As a sports promoter Barry’s been a prominent figure on the UK sporting scene for a number of decades, first with snooker in the 1970s, then with boxing in the 1980s followed by darts in the 1990s. He was also chairman of Leyton Orient football club from 1995 to 2014. Though his son Eddie now manages Matchroom’s interests in boxing, Barry’s still very much involved in snooker - as the owner of World Snooker, the world governing body’s commercial arm - and darts, as chairman of the PDC, the Professional Darts Corporation. You can hear Barry talk about such things as... ...the secrets of his success"I'm tough to beat on work ethic. I like to win and I know most of my opposition won't make the same amount of effort." ...his public perception"Behind the barrow boy is a chartered accountant - I'm a freak with figures and live for balance sheets." ...running Matchroom"At the moment my word still counts for something. But I'm sure it will start to count less and less." ...sitting at the negotiation table"It's like being with your dentist: you grab his testicles and say, 'Neither of us are going to hurt each other, are we?'" ...his foray into football"I like to think I'm this tough guy, but I must have a soft centre...my heart and my wallet merged together" ...the secrets to promoting a sports event"It's so easy; it's pure common sense...but you'd be surprised by how many get it wrong." ...sports industry snobbery"People look at me, thinking, 'Darts? Those fat blokes throwing those things? It's not like that down my rugby club'. It really pisses me off." ...selling Matchroom"Many want to buy it, but I'd never sell it. If I did, what would I do? Could you see me as a PLC chairman? Come on."
