In this special episode, recorded during the MFP's 2024 Summer Intensive Training Institute in Washington, D.C., host Indrias Kassaye brings together an accomplished panel of MFP alumni to celebrate the program's 50-year legacy and explore the future of psychiatric and mental health care for underserved communities.Join us as Dr. John Lowe, Dr. Eugenia Millender, Dr. Rosa Gonzalez-Guarda, Dr. Mary Lou de Leon Siantz, Dr. Kalisha Bonds-Johnson, and Dr. LaKeetra Josey share their journeys, groundbreaking research, and the profound impact they've had on the lives of those they serve. Dr. Lowe reflects on a powerful moment when a young Native American man, whom he had mentored through the Talking Circle intervention, crossed paths with him years later in Washington, D.C., having become a successful law student and intern on Capitol Hill—a testament to the life-changing influence of culturally tailored interventions.Dr. Millender discusses how her research on cumulative trauma and stress has not only advanced our understanding of cardiovascular disease but also empowered communities to confront and address the long-term impacts of these stressors. She recalls the personal transformation she experienced through the MFP, which expanded her worldview and deepened her commitment to addressing health inequities, particularly within indigenous and Latino communities.Dr. Gonzalez-Guarda shares how her upbringing in Miami initially sheltered her from the broader inequities faced by immigrant communities—a realization that later fueled her passion for health equity. Her work, now recognized with a new grant for a community trial, focuses on preventing systemic health outcomes in Latino immigrant families, emphasizing the importance of cultural strengths in overcoming societal stressors.Dr. Mary Lou de Leon Siantz speaks movingly about her lifelong dedication to the mental health and reproductive health of migrant children and adolescents. She reflects on her pioneering work as the first national mental health coordinator for the Migrant Head Start program and her ongoing commitment to advocating for immigrant children at the U.S. border.Dr. Kalisha Bonds-Johnson offers insight into her research on African American adult daughters caring for parents with cognitive impairments. Drawing from her own life experiences, she highlights the importance of culturally tailored support systems for these caregivers, whose challenges often go unrecognized. Her work, supported by a prestigious NIH K award, exemplifies the critical need for research that addresses the unique needs of underserved populations.Dr. LaKeetra Josey discusses how the MFP transformed her approach to leadership and clinical practice, empowering her to create innovative mental health care solutions tailored to the needs of diverse communities. From establishing a practice in the Dominican Republic serving U.S. veterans to integrating mental health services in schools, Dr. Josey exemplifies the impact of culturally responsive care in improving mental health outcomes. The journeys of these distinguished guests exemplify the mission of the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program at the American Nurses Association to address substance use disorder and mental health care disparities affecting racial and ethnic minorities. Through their research, clinical practice, and advocacy, they have each contributed to reducing these disparities by developing and implementing culturally relevant interventions that resonate deeply with the communities they serve. Their work underscores the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by underserved populations, from systemic inequities to the need for culturally sensitive care.Throughout the episode, the importance of storytelling emerges as a powerful theme. The panelists emphasize how sharing narratives—whether it's their own or those of the individuals and communities they serve—can bridge understanding, inspire action, and drive meaningful change. They highlight how the Minority Fellowship Program has equipped them not only with the skills to conduct groundbreaking research but also with the ability to become advocates, and tell the stories that humanize their work, make it accessible to a broader audience and inspire new generations of psychiatric mental health nurses. This episode captures the spirit of the MFP family—a powerful community of leaders dedicated to advancing mental health equity. Through their personal anecdotes, these trailblazing nurse scientists not only highlight their professional achievements but also share the deep, personal connections they've made with those they serve, and the transformative experiences that shaped their visions for the future.Tune in for a rich discussion that both honors the past and looks boldly to the future, envisioning new frontiers in mental health care, from addressing the needs of indigenous populations to exploring the possibilities for nurse scientists in outer space. Louise Lowe, wife of John and mother to two young boys was tragically taken from this world in 2014. This is her story, as told by John. John shares with us the sudden and unexpected passing of Louise and the days after where organ donorship was discussed and agreed to, because those were Louises wishes and fortunately something that John and Louise had discussed. Sometimes it's hard to find the words that do justice for a conversation and for me this is one such time. I sat both mesmerized and heartbroken as I listened to Louises story and tears welled in my eyes several times (so yeah, grab yourself some Kleenex before you get underway). Yet it is a story of love, hope, purpose and second chances that amidst a whirlwind of emotions will leave your heart full to the brim (I promise).  I can't thank John enough for his willingness to share his families experience, and for his ability to do so in the way that he does. It is a gift that through an undeniable ripple-effect will ensure that more lives are positively impacted by organ donation and that future families faced with such tragic circumstances may have the comfort of certainty around knowing their loved ones wishes.    DONATE LIFE VICTORIA Website: www.donatelife.gov.au  TIFFANEE COOK Linktree:  https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches/ Website: www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn:  www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook:  www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram:  www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandcoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bellinger was cut by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Nov. 18 after the 27-year-old outfielder hit .210 with 19 homers in 144 games. Bellinger was the 2019 NL MVP. MLB – Longtime Free Press writer Lowe wins BBWAA excellence award John Lowe, who created the quality start statistic while covering baseball for the Detroit Free Press and other newspapers for more than three decades, has won the BBWAA Career Excellence Award. The honor was announced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Lowe got 137 votes from BBWAA members. The late Gerry Fraley was second with 135 and Bruce Jenkins drew 106. Lowe will be honored during Hall of Fame induction weekend next July in Cooperstown, New York. In 1985, Lowe created the quality start stat, which has since become part of the baseball landscape — six innings pitched, no more than three earned runs allowed. Lowe retired in 2014 after 29 years with the Free Press following previous stints with the Los Angeles Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Rams made the move Tuesday to add Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft by Cleveland. Mayfield was released by the Panthers on Monday at his request after seven disappointing games with Carolina. The Rams need quarterback help. Matthew Stafford is almost certainly out for the season with a bruised spinal cord, and backups John Wolford and Bryce Perkins have been fairly ineffective while playing three of the past four games. NCAAFB – Hall of Famer Croom: ‘Not enough progress’ for Black coaches New Hall of Famer Sylvester Croom says there has not been enough progress in college football when it comes to the hiring of Black head coaches. Croom, a star player for Alabama in the early 1970s, became the first Black head football coach in the Southeastern Conference in 2004 when he was hired by Mississippi State. Since then, there have been only four others and there are currently no Black head coaches in the SEC. Only one of 16 head coaching vacancies in major college football this year has been filled by a Black coach. Croom called it ‘disappointing’ and ‘frustrating,’ but said he was happy to see Deion Sanders get an opportunity with Colorado. Boxing – Mills Lane, Hall of Fame boxing referee, dies at 85 Mills Lane, the Hall of Fame boxing referee who was the third man in the ring when Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear, died Tuesday. He was 85. Respected for being tough but fair, his “Let’s get it on!” command became the final words heard before many memorable fights. Lane had suffered a stroke in 2002 and his son, Tommy, said his father had taken a significant turn for the worse recently before entering hospice care on Friday. FIFA – 2022 FIFA World Cup – Qatar Yesterday Knockout Round – Round of 16 Morocco 0, Spain 0 – Morocco wins on PK’s 3-0 Portugal 6, Switzerland 1 Morocco 0, Spain 0 – MOR PK’s 3-0 – Morocco beats Spain on penalties to advance at World Cup Morocco became the first Arab nation and only the fourth African nation to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals by beating Spain 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets missed their penalties for Spain. Sarabia hit the post and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stopped the other two. The teams drew 0-0 in regulation and extra time. Morocco has been the biggest surprise of the tournament and will next face either Portugal or Switzerland. Morocco and Spain are close neighbors with a complex geopolitical relationship. Portugal 6, Switzerland 1 – Ronaldo dropped, Ramos scores 3 for Portugal at World Cup Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement scored a hat trick to lead Portugal over Switzerland 6-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals. Goncalo Ramos is a 21-year-old forward who only made his Portugal debut last month. He made his first start for his country by demonstrating the kind of clinical finishing Ronaldo was once known for. Ramos scored the opening goal in the 17th minute and added the others in the 51st and 67th. By that time chants of “RONALDO! RONALDO!” were swirling around the 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium. Ronaldo entered as a substitute in the 72nd. Friday Quarterfinals Croatia vs. Brazil, 10:00 a.m. Netherlands vs. Argentina, 2:00 p.m. FIFA – The next World Cup will jump to 48 teams. Is bigger better? The next World Cup will be the biggest ever after world soccer body FIFA took the leap from a 32-team field to 48 teams in 2026. It means more of soccer’s so-called “little teams” that didn’t make it to Qatar will be given a chance-of-a-lifetime when the World Cup goes to the United States, Canada and Mexico. Great news for everyone who was entertained by Saudi Arabia’s stirring underdog upset of Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Morocco knocking out Spain. More surprises surely await in four years. Only it’s not clear for some that bigger is better at the World Cup. FIFA – Moroccans celebrate historic World Cup win against Spain Exuberant Moroccans have poured into the streets of their capital and in cities across Europe to celebrate their national soccer team’s historic win against Spain at the World Cup. Morocco defeated Spain in a penalty shootout in Qatar, making the Atlas Lions the only team from outside Europe or South America to make it to the last eight. The capital, Rabat, was bursting with joy while Morocco fans also celebrated in the streets in France and Spain. FIFA – Ronaldo a solitary figure after being benched at World Cup Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t start Portugal’s game against Switzerland in the round of 16 of the World Cup. The move came a day after his coach expressed frustration about Ronaldo’s attitude in the last match. Gonçalo Ramos started in Ronaldo’s place at Lusail Stadium. Ronaldo showed obvious displeasure at being removed from the game against South Korea on Friday. That led to Ramos getting the start. The 21-year-old made his international debut three weeks ago, then scored a hat trick in his first career start for Portugal, which came in the World Cup as Ronaldo’s replacement. Portugal beat Switzerland 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I was just 16 when you took my virginity on your office floor. Do you remember that?" Those are the words from Bobbi Gephart, who confronted her abuser in front of his congregation after he gave a "confession" of an "affair" some 20 years ago. John Lowe II lied on stage, telling his church that he had an "affair," leaving out an important detail--it was no affair at all. Instead, he raped a 16 year old girl and abused her for years. This is a case-in-point that survivors of abuse have more power than their abusers give them credit for. Lowe was completely blindsided, not expecting his victim to take the stage after his "confession." PLEASE PRESS SUBSCRIBE! A pastor in Indiana attempted to tell his congregation about adultery he'd committed 20 years ago, but his congregation turned on him when the woman called him out -- revealing she was 16 at the time. New Life Christian Church pastor John Lowe announced his resignation Sunday after confessing to cheating on his wife with one other person many years ago. The congregation applauded and forgave Lowe, then a woman and her husband approached the altar. While Lowe had sex with this woman on the church office floor, she claimed she was just 16 at the time. Indiana's consent age is 16. While the congregation watched, the woman continued, telling Pastor Lowe that the affair went on for nine years. The audience began shouting at Lowe after the woman and her husband left the stage, and he eventually confessed, saying the woman was only 16 when he had an affair with her. According to a local report, the county prosecutor has opened an investigation. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts!
