In today's episode of iGaming Daily, SBC's Managing Editor, Jessica Welman, is joined by Motti Colman, VP of Revenue at Optimove, the podcast's main sponsor, for an analysis of player behaviour in the sweepstakes versus real money online casino sectors. With a focus on practical outcomes over legal definitions, the duo explores how each gaming model attracts and retains players, using exclusive Optimove data and a detailed case study that spans global iGaming markets.Motti highlights how Optimove's advanced benchmarking and predictive modelling shed light on key differences in player value, onboarding success, and behavioural trends. Listeners will learn how the regulated online casino market sets the gold standard, while the sweepstakes model, despite its clever “scratch card” style redemption mechanics, faces significant hurdles in conversion rates due to complex onboarding and player skepticism. A critical takeaway? The importance of Day One. As the hosts reveal, player actions in the first 24 hours are often the most predictive of long-term engagement and lifetime value. While sweepstakes players may start slow, Optimove's research shows that by Day 28, they can match or even exceed online casino players in loyalty and activity, provided CRM strategies focus on guiding players through an intensive 'incubation' period. In this episode of iGaming Daily, brought to you by Optimove, hosts Ted Menmuir and Ted Orme-Claye, dissect the decision by GambleAware's board of trustees to wind down operations, signaling a complete closure by March 2026. As a long-standing pillar in the UK's gambling harm prevention ecosystem, GambleAware's exit marks a transformative shift in how gambling treatment and education will be handled moving forward. With the charity stepping away from roles in strategic planning, fundraising, and commissioning, the episode examines how this development reshapes the landscape of gambling harm mitigation in the UK, especially in the context of the upcoming statutory levy and NHS-led treatment models. The discussion provides crucial insights into GambleAware's historical role as the UK's leading commissioner of gambling harm funding, primarily supported by voluntary one per cent contributions from major operators like Flutter, Entain, William Hill, bet365, and GAN. The hosts explore the possible reasons behind the trustees' decision to fully exit, rather than accept a diminished position under the NHS's control. They also assess how this move may reflect broader political and institutional goals, particularly the NHS's long-standing ambition to establish a fully independent public health response, free from industry ties.Looking to the future, the episode raises pressing concerns about the NHS's readiness to assume full responsibility for gambling treatment, research, and support services. With mounting structural pressures, ongoing resource constraints, and a lack of clear leadership communication, questions loom over how this transition will unfold. In this episode of iGaming Daily's Road to Lisbon series, host Charlie Horner sits down with Christopher Coyne, Co-Founder and CEO of 888Africa, for a discussion about the continent's iGaming landscape. Drawing from his global experience in the European and Australian iGaming sectors, Christopher highlights how Africa's unique challenges, such as outdated mobile devices, limited bandwidth, and a multitude of languages, create both obstacles and extraordinary opportunities. He points out that Africa's rapidly growing population and increasing government openness to regulated gaming as a source of tax revenue are driving a new era of professional iGaming expansion. The conversation moves deeper into 888Africa's strategic roadmap, shedding light on how the company chooses its markets and builds its footprint. Out of the 54 African nations, roughly 30 have regulated iGaming sectors, but entering each requires careful analysis. Christopher outlines a clear checklist: political stability, population size (preferably over 20 million), economic strength, and growing mobile penetration. Licensing frameworks and market competition are also major considerations. To illustrate the continent's varied regulatory and market environments, the episode contrasts two specific countries: Kenya and Malawi. Kenya, once a promising iGaming hub, is now riddled with regulatory reversals, including sudden tax hikes and a sweeping ban on advertising and CRM tools, measures that have created friction between operators and policymakers. Meanwhile, Malawi is emerging as an exciting new frontier, attracting serious attention due to its open regulatory stance and competitive yet fertile landscape. Christopher is optimistic that Malawi's approach, if mirrored across the region, could compress 10 to 15 years of market maturity into just a few. Host: Charlie HornerGuest: Christopher CoyneProducer: Anaya McDonaldEditor: James Ross

In this episode of iGaming Daily, brought to you by Optimove, Jessica Welman and Charlie Horner, delve into the legal battle surrounding the National US Gambling Support Hotline, 1-800-GAMBLER. At stake is the continued operation of a lifeline for countless Americans struggling with gambling addiction. Managed by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), the hotline plays a critical national role by connecting individuals to localised support. However, a contract dispute with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ), which owns the number, has triggered a lawsuit. NCPG argues the agreement included an auto-renewal clause, while CCGNJ appears unwilling to renew. With millions invested in promoting the hotline and its irreplaceable role in national problem gambling prevention, industry leaders are urging swift resolution.California's gaming landscape is also heating up, with legal friction erupting across Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), sweepstakes, and prediction markets. A recent opinion from the California Attorney General states that most DFS formats, including peer-to-peer and house-based games, likely violate state law. This development could affect even traditional fantasy leagues and has triggered pushback from major operators. FanDuel seems inclined toward negotiation, potentially aiming to strengthen tribal partnerships, while DraftKings, PrizePicks, and Underdog are pushing back aggressively. We also cover breaking updates on California's sweepstakes legislation and a groundbreaking federal lawsuit involving prediction markets. New amendments clarify that the sweepstakes bill targets suppliers, including affiliates, rather than end users. Meanwhile, three tribal nations have filed a federal lawsuit against Kalahi and Robinhood, arguing that prediction markets constitute Class 3 gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). On this episode of iGaming Daily, Managing Editor, Jessica Welman, and Professional Gambler and Founder of Unabated.com, Jack Andrews, break down a major shift in gambling tax law that's sending shockwaves through the betting world. Buried within the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the controversial change overhauls how gambling winnings and losses are reported, eliminating the long-standing ability to deduct losses dollar-for-dollar against winnings. This episode dives deep into what the change means for recreational bettors, high-volume players, and industry stakeholders navigating the financial consequences. At the heart of the issue is a new cap limiting gambling loss deductions to just 90% of winnings. This means that even players who walk away with a net loss could owe taxes on up to 10% of their gross wins. Jack Andrews lays out the math: if you win £100,000 but lose £105,000, you'd still owe taxes on £5,000. The implications are especially dire for high-net-worth bettors and VIPs who represent the lifeblood of casino revenue. With fears that the IRS could now more aggressively target these players, the hosts explore how this tax tweak could inadvertently push bettors toward offshore markets and unregulated platforms, threatening the stability of the legal gaming ecosystem.Jessica and Jack also scrutinise the mixed responses from key industry players. While the American Gaming Association initially applauded the legislation, it quickly reversed course after internal backlash. Meanwhile, the Sports Betting Alliance has stayed notably quiet. The episode uncovers growing speculation around how such a sweeping change made it into the bill unnoticed, even by members of the Senate Finance Committee. Ep 541: Peru's Match-Fixing Crackdown and Brazil's Betting Battle

In this episode of iGaming Daily, brought to you by Optimove, host Damian Martinez sits down with Ricardo Assis, Editor of SBC Noticias Brazil and Lucia Gando, Editor of SBC Noticias, as the three zero in on Brazil's recent regulatory overhaul, where the government has increased the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) tax rate from 12% to 18%. This controversial measure, championed by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, aims to plug the country's fiscal gap but has ignited industry-wide resistance and political backlash from lawmakers determined to curb unsustainable public spending. The episode also shines a spotlight on the growing tension between Brazil's legal and illegal betting markets. With six major gaming associations warning that higher taxes may drive operators underground, the stakes are high. A revealing study shows that up to 51% of the Brazilian market remains unregulated, with 73% of players expected to gamble on illegal sites in 2025—costing the government billions in lost revenue. This paradox—where efforts to regulate and tax the industry may inadvertently fuel black-market growth—is central to the podcast's timely and critical analysis.Expanding beyond Brazil, the conversation covers regulatory milestones in Peru and Paraguay that are shaping the future of LatAm sports betting. Peru's move to criminalize match-fixing and ease tax burdens on operators signals progress toward a fairer, safer market, while Paraguay's push to dismantle its state monopoly promises new licensing opportunities and increased tax revenue. Ep 539: From Gray List to Green Light - Gibraltar and UAE's iGaming Credibility

In today's episode of iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, Ted Orme-Claye, Viktor Kayed, and Ted Menmuir break down the recent removal of Gibraltar and the UAE from the EU's Anti-Money Laundering (AML) watch list. Viktor, who originally broke the story for SBC News, details why this delisting marks a crucial turning point for these markets. Gibraltar, long regarded as a premier hub for European gaming operators and B2B technology providers, has worked swiftly to address shortcomings flagged by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)—strengthening its AML controls, asset seizure processes, and gambling oversight to restore its market reputation and access to EU business channels. The discussion then shifts to the United Arab Emirates, a fast-emerging player in the global iGaming scene. The UAE's removal from the AML list follows its creation of the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), a step towards a legalised and regulated gaming environment in the region. With Wynn Resorts' Ras Al Khaimah project on the horizon, the UAE is positioning itself not just as a potential destination for high-end land-based gaming but also as a future hub for game development, technology platforms, and iGaming investment—serving as a bridge to key Asian markets. However, the three caution against overestimating its immediate impact on broader online gambling in Asia, pointing to the unique complexities of neighboring countries such as China, India, and Japan. This episode highlights why these regulatory shifts are a game-changer for investors, gaming operators, and tech innovators alike. The removal from the EU and FATF “gray lists” reduces financial risk, removes regulatory barriers, and sends a strong signal of market credibility—opening doors for partnerships, funding, and new ventures in both Gibraltar and the UAE. Bonus: The ‘New Tax Dawn' for iGaming - What Operators Must Know After SBC Summit 2025

With tax burdens now exceeding 50% in key regions like France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK, operators are feeling the squeeze more than ever. Germany's severe taxation and game restrictions have pushed channelisation to the black market beyond 55%, prompting many to write off the country as a viable market altogether. Alongside the tax pressure, operators must now contend with fragmented advertising bans and tightening regulations across Europe, making 2025 a year of strategic cost-saving, operational pivoting, and regulatory navigation.Despite these challenges, the future holds promise. Optimism surrounds Finland's upcoming regulated market launch in 2027, with stakeholders preparing early to avoid the missteps seen in markets like the Netherlands. Italy shows renewed energy too, albeit now catering mostly to top-tier operators due to its £7 million licensing cost. The rise of AI remains another pivotal opportunity—and risk—with summit discussions exploring its potential to transform customer service, content creation, and competitive dynamics across the industry.

However, this law has sparked legal scrutiny across the EU, with opponents arguing it contradicts European Single Market rules and raises significant competition law concerns under Article 56 of the EU Treaty.Host Charlie Horner is joined by iGaming Experts Editor Joe Streeter and SBC's Media Director Martyn Elliott, reporting live from SBC Summit Malta. Together, they delve into why Bill 55 could face escalation to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) following Austrian legal challenges — and what this means for operators contributing over 11% to Malta's GDP. Shifting focus to the UK market, the trio unpacks the implications of proposed gambling tax hikes, including potential increases to 21% or even 41% as suggested by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In this episode, discover why experts warn that aggressive tax changes could unintentionally fuel black market gambling, erode KYC safeguards, and put players at risk. 535: Shot in the Foot - Why Brazil's Proposed Tax Hike Will Boost Illegal Betting

In this latest episode of iGaming Daily, brought to you by Optimove, hosted by Fernando Noodt, the team, including Ricardo Assis and Ana Maria Menezes from SBC Noticias Brasil, delves into the turbulent Brazilian iGaming market. The discussion centres on a major tax increase proposed for the sector. On June 8th, the government decided to advance a provisional measure to increase the betting tax rate from 12% to 18% on the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of all licensed betting companies. This proposal, expected to be presented to President Lula, is an alternative to a previously unpopular tax increase on financial operations (IOF). While viewed as popular in Congress and with the public, for betting operators, this represents an immense tax increase, potentially raising the overall tax burden to around 36% when other existing taxes are included. The proposed tax hike has prompted strong reactions from the industry and political entities. ANJEL, the Association of Gaming and Lotteries in Brazil, has criticised the move as a "shot in the foot," warning of licensed companies leaving Brazil, lower tax revenues, and a boost to the illegal betting market, which already constitutes about 60% of all bets in the country. They suggest focusing on cracking down on illegal operators could yield nearly triple the expected tax revenue. Operators themselves express serious concerns, fearing competitive disadvantages for domestic companies, leading to mergers, acquisitions, or even closures, with some believing that half of the operators cannot handle this raise. The Parliamentary Front of the Free Market, comprising 173 deputies and 27 senators, has also opposed the measure, fearing it could lead to the "death of the legal sector" and negatively impact Brazilian sports, as many football clubs are sponsored by betting operators.
