Miagen, the leader in financial modelling technology solutions, has announced the launch of a solution that will help Europe's football clubs to comply with financial sustainability rules. With football clubs across Europe facing mounting financial scrutiny and risking crippling sanctions, the solution, SportsGen will help clubs to navigate their finances, protect their long-term survival and save up to €3M on wages per season. Financial sustainability rules have shaken up the world of football recently, after a number of clubs were docked points and even rendered bankrupt for falling foul of them. The rules, which mostly apply to European and English football leagues, were introduced to ensure football clubs operate within their financial means, promoting long-term financial stability and preventing reckless spending. SportsGen is a financial planning & analysis (FP&A) platform built for mid-tier and elite football clubs. Miagen estimates that that insights enabled by its software can help clubs to increase match-day revenues by up to 10%. The platform enables clubs to see missed revenue opportunities - including those relating to attendance, pricing and scheduling - so they can implement new strategies to optimise ticket sales. SportsGen's real-time financial insights are enabled by integrating live data from ticketing, sponsorships, broadcasting and merchandising. It allows clubs to model different league finishing positions, assess financial implications, and stay within spending limits to avoid harsh penalties like point deductions and relegation. With smart forecasting for wages, transfers and operational costs, SportsGen helps clubs to make informed decisions during transfer windows and remain competitive while staying compliant with financial regulations. Additionally, Miagen is already planning updates that will integrate AI-driven player valuation and scouting insights. The new solution comes on the back of Miagen's dominance in financial modelling for the world's aircraft leasing market. The Dublin-based company's financial modelling platform, LeaseGen, is now used for one in five of the global leased aircraft fleet. Brian Byrne, COO, Miagen, said: "Football is no longer just about success on the pitch; it's about sustainability off it. Clubs are making high-risk financial decisions on transfer spending, wage structures and operational costs, but often without the right tools. The stakes have never been higher, as financial miscalculations can mean relegation, massive revenue losses and even club extinction. "Football clubs are more than just businesses; many have been at the heart of communities for more than a century. They bring people together and are playing a major role in funding and supporting women's sport. Through better financial planning with SportsGen, they can make even greater progress on this work and ultimately, ensure they thrive in today's uncompromising football economy." The Greatest Football Merger That Never Was?In this week's episode of *By Far The Greatest Team*, hosts Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney dive deep into one of football's most controversial what-ifs—the proposed merger between Oxford United and Reading FC in 1983, masterminded by the notorious media mogul Robert Maxwell. Maxwell's audacious plan to unite the two rival clubs under the name *Thames Valley Royals* sparked outrage among fans, who saw the proposal as an attack on their footballing heritage. The episode uncovers the passionate SOS campaigns launched by both sets of supporters, fighting tooth and nail to preserve their club's identity. But why did this merger, which seemed almost certain, eventually fall apart? Graham and Jamie unravel the story of how the deal was derailed by disastrous decisions from Reading's directors and the detective work of local hero Roger Smee. The discussion also broadens out to examine other attempts at merging football clubs, highlighting the tribal and emotional bonds that make such mergers so challenging. Tune in to explore the legacy of the Thames Valley Royals —a cautionary tale that serves as a powerful reminder of the deep-seated resistance to blending footballing identities. Fan data and shifts in media consumption suggest that the major football clubs and leagues should be bypassing traditional broadcasters and seeking to directly monetise their supporters via digital channels. Talking Points: How to measure the lifetime value of fans? – (3:40) How can clubs overcome the challenge with the lack of live rights? – (12:00) What are the barriers holding the industry back from direct to consumer? – (21:38) What role does sponsorship play within direct to consumer? – (25:04) Which is more valuable to sponsors, a club's brand or a club's fans? – (37:36)
The Celtic manager referred to a reporter as a 'good girl' when he walked away from a post match interview yesterday. Why don't PR and comms profesionals get involved when things like this occur? Can't they see the potential for reputational damage? Easier all round of course if men improve their attitudes but it should't take national newspaper headlines the following day and an outcry from women's groups for the BUSINESS to realise this shouldn't have happened. Stop deifying football managers and other powerful people in your organisation. Treat them like the liabilities they often are, especially in these moments of high emotion. Risk assess every media engagement.
The Agents Angle - The World's Premier Football (Soccer) Agent Show
The aspect of Player Care has evolved rapidly in football in recent times, and should be recognised as an important factor for any conscientious football agent, club and player. Yet, what role do agents have in the provision of player care, and do agents really appreciate and understand the value of player care and the role of player liaison professionals within clubs? 'The Agents Angle' welcomes @Hugo Scheckter as this episode's guest; a vastly experienced player care professional with many English Premier League clubs and now a trainer of many of those working in Player Care as well as an advisor to many elite clubs on their player care provisions. 'The Agents Angle' also takes a look at reports of an 'out of court' settlement between an agent and club, in a long-running dispute over the transfer of Emiliano Sala from FC Nantes to Cardiff City FC which sadly ended in tragedy. Could more robust player care provisions have helped possibly avert the disputes, but more importantly the tragic outcome? The aspect of multiple agents being involved in a single transfer also brings 'under the spotlight' the topic of 'mandates'. What are they, how can they be used, how are they structured and what are the implications and considerations for football agents, clubs, and footballers in using mandates around the world? The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
Probably no other English club below the professional leagues has gathered more media attention than Dulwich Hamlet, located South of the river in London and around in that neighborhood since 1893. Any quick search on the club will turn up grand phrases like “a different vision for football” or “the small club with the big vision.” And that vision - inclusive, humanitarian, egalitarian - draws around 3000 spectators (critics would say 3000 hipsters) who often wouldn't feel comfortable at other soccer grounds to the Hamlet's South London home for most games. But despite such record numbers for the lower leagues, the club just got relegated. It also is planning a new stadium, after briefly being thrown out of the old one by developers. And it is both shaped by and wrestling with its identity in a gentrifying neighborhood. Tim Scott, chairman of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters trust, shares about the vibe around the club, the ups and downs and growing pains of the atmosphere at home games, and the work of a supporter's trust.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODEDulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust (also on twitter)Dulwich Hamlet FC (also on twitter); Club Shop2018 piece in the Guardian re. the stadium conflictRecent piece in the local newspaper re. current stadium plans with statement from DHFC"First all-trans masc side makes football history" - hosted by DHFCFootball Ground Guide on Champion HillPlease leave a quick voicemail with any feedback, corrections, suggestions - or just greetings - HERE. A self-proclaimed 'Dallas Boy' and original "Texas Longhorn" (not the University, football guys) Youth Soccer Club" player who spent the majority of his adolescence and teenage years on the Europe Continent playing soccer, and winning games and trophies, Butch stayed over and played in England in the 1970s - virtually unheard of at the time. Luckily for us, he had the foresight to also pursue his coaching badges before returning to TCU to finish his Master's Degree. A prolific clinician, coach, tactician and published author, Butch has touched the game on every single level of US Soccer. From U8 summer campers to MLS, to the Scottish FA and FIFA, Butch is respected and listened to on both sides of the Atlantic in both the women's and men's game, top to bottom. Butch is a "Football Guy", through and through. Lauffer has several foreign and domestic coaching licenses, including an English Football Association's preparatory coaching license (1982), the United States Soccer Federation “A” license (1987) and the Irish Football Association Grade 1 coaching license (1989). Most recently, he earned a United European Football Association “A” license from the Wales Football Association in 1998 and a UEFA pro license through the Scottish Football Association in 2001. During the 1994 World Cup, he became a member of the USSF National coaching staff and assisted FIFA with the technical reports for all World Cup contests at the Dallas venue and taught coaching courses on developing coaching skills for the “A,” “B,” and “C” levels. Butch is about to enter his 33rd season as head men's soccer coach perennial NCAA power West Texas A&M University, a program that he not only founded, but also coached the Women's side for the first decade of its existence. This year he will eclipse his 600th win as a Collegiate Head Coach. He has been a mainstay of youth soccer at every level in Texas and across the USA and for the NSCAA for the majority of his life. He has garnered most all Regional, Conference & National awards and pushed dozens of his collegiate players to Football Clubs both overseas and here at the top levels of US professional soccer. #podcast #soccer #futbol #3oldgoalies #leadership #ussoccer #WestTexas #WestTexasAM #unitedsoccercoaches #beautifulgame #USMNT #Wosoc #wins #winning #NSCAA #500winsplus #ncaa #ncaatournament recorded 3.12.23 Included in this episode: Lauffer Interview, Boa's Trip around the Globe, and an outside the box topic: Top 5 Favorite songs of all time. On this special interview episode, I spoke to Philip O'Rourke about his upcoming book "Forgotten Football Clubs: Fifty Teams Across the World, Gone but Never Forgotten." We discussed why some clubs go out of business, what happens to the fans of a forgotten team and some of the strangest stories of forgotten clubs. We also touch on how a fan feels when their clubs ceases to exist, and the conflicting emotions of having to find another team to support. It's a really interesting interview and I really encourage people to check out the book, which is out now the beginning of February 2023. Learn more about your ad choices. The new Rugby Reloaded talks to Stewart McGill and Vince Raison about their fascinating new book, 'The Roaring Red Front: The World's Top Left-Wing Football Clubs' (Pitch Publishing). They travelled around the world visiting soccer clubs which have a reputation for left-wing politics, sampling the match-day atmosphere, and exploring the histories of a diverse range of clubs, from Dulwich Hamlet to Detroit City, Boca Juniors In Argentina to St Pauli in Germany. It's a rich and passionate story that tells us a lot about the place - and the future - of football in the modern world.
