Lilia Vega: "About ten years ago, I was inducted into a secret society in my family. The ones who know, and the ones who protect. We are the guardians of the family. The bodies we put between them and Him.He is a dark presence in our family, the man I call grandfather. He sits on the fringes of family gatherings, braying in that low, distinctive voice of his. He's a charming man, but whenever he makes a joke, no one looks at him as they laugh. No one calls him “father.”Is a secret really a secret if everyone knows?"This piece was produced by Chelsea Kigano, Emily Shaw, Lilia Vega, and Lily Sloane, as part of The 24-Hour Radio Race from KCRW's Independent Producer Project in 2019.

Jude Brewer's award-winning "Buzzy." Jude Brewer is a Portland-based writer, audio producer, actor, and host of Storybound. His piece “Buzzy” finished first in KCRW's 2021 Radio Race. In lieu of voicemails, letters, or other tangible keepsakes, the sound of a skateboard remains Brewer's only tie to his late childhood best friend and neighbor, Buzzy. Beyond the piece's beautifully crafted audio design and editing, Brewer wields sound as a character unto itself, taking the listener inside its ability to trigger — and sustain — memories of halcyon days spent perfecting kickflips after school and revelling in the unwritten possibilities and potential of youth. "Buzzy" was produced by Jude Brewer. Can you produce an entire creative project in just 24 hours, from start to finish? This week, Katy attempted just that. She and her good friend and fellow radio producer Casey Martin decided to participate in the KCRW 24-hour Radio Race 2021. The challenge: produce an entire radio piece from scratch in no more than 24 hours. With the somewhat lack-luster theme of "Won't You Be My Neighbor?", these two audio professionals get to work, taking a radio project from zero to completely produced and in the can. After Monday's episode on ideas, hear Katy and Casey go through the brainstorming process in real time, thinking up an idea and curating it to fit the theme. Find the finished project, The Thirty Year Secret, here. Mission Statement :The Por Vida/For Life Media Youth Collective provides a brave space for storytellers, journalists, filmmakers and broadcasters to share stories. We create content centered on restorative and transformative justice practices in order for our communities to continue healing and growing together. Description of Project:The Por Vida/For Life Media Youth Collective and Families Listening to You (F.L.Y.) present a new series every Monday night at 6pm on KQBH 101.5 FM and streaming on the worldwide web at www.lpfm.la. The purpose of our hotline is to break the informational and emotional barriers that state and system officials create between incarcerated and detained individuals, their communities and the public. This project brings light to the dangerous conditions of confinement during COVID-19 from the voices and perspectives of those detained. With the consent of incarcerated individuals who call the hotline, we record and transcribe their personal testimonies and insight regarding the injustices of two overlapping pandemics: COVID-19, and the mass incarceration of Black and brown Angelinos.

We learn a lot by doing hard things that push us outside of our comfort zones. I realized this when knee pain which was probably an old injury snuck up on me during my first 100 mile ultra marathon. I haven't had knee pain like this since my last 50K. I also had no signs of pain during my training for this race. I learned some valuable lessons about myself, about pain, and about the feeling of failure. I learned what a DNF feels like. DNF stands for Did Not Finish. You can get into the mind of an aspiring ultra runner by listening here. Great insights and the outcome. What's next? Another 100 Miler? HELL YEAH!!!! once the knee is figured out, training begins for the next event. www.lifestylelocker.com/fail2success www.NYCLC.com

Former Dallas Police Officer aka Slave Catcher Amber Guyger is now a convicted murderer and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. While most have been distracted by public spectacles of forgiveness by Botham Jean's little brother in a moment of emotionality and grief, there are some serious issues connected to this case and its apparent to me that the Dallas PD has a history of harboring racists and violent slave catchers and are still enabling them. What happens when a producer is given just a theme and a ridiculously short time-frame? It's a Radio Race! And the results were amazing.
