His down-to-earth upbringing in Sioux Center, Iowa provided a foundation for Randy's 40-year career in healthcare and personal life. For the last 13 years of his career, Randy led the largest healthcare system and the biggest employer in Northwest Ohio. Working diligently with business and civic leaders, he was instrumental in revitalizing Toledo's downtown area. He received numerous accolades for his professional achievements including the prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service. 

The healthcare sector is a major contributor to the climate crisis, with studies showing the industry accounts for about 8.5% of total U.S. carbon emissions. Efforts to address climate change fall into the ESG framework, which stands for environment, social and governance.  Over the last several months, Randy Oostra, CEO of ProMedica, a health and well-being company based in Toldeo, Ohio, has participated in the Healthcare Insider podcast to call for a new care delivery model.  In this episode, Oostra shares why addressing climate change is a critical component to creating a new healthcare delivery model, explaining the business case for healthcare leaders as well as the impacts extreme weather events are having on vulnerable communities. Created Equal is leading a demonstration along with other pro-life activists in Toledo to ask two local hospitals, ProMedica and St. Luke's, to keep their word and stay out of the grisly business of abortion. Ohio state law requires ambulatory surgical centers, like Capital Care network’s Toledo abortion facility, to have a transfer agreement with a local hospital. To date, Toledo’s ProMedica Hospital had chosen not to provide Capital Care the transfer agreement. Randy Oostra, President and CEO of ProMedica, previously said, "Toledo ProMedica Hospital does not have transfer agreements with abortion clinics. However, with or without a transfer agreement, we will perform any necessary treatment of women, or any patient, in need of emergent care." However, following the Supreme Court decision last week, ProMedica spokesman Tedra White stated, "At this point, ProMedica has not changed its position; obviously we’re considering it. We feel like this Ohio Supreme Court decision warrants a review of the issue, but we have not changed our position." Rocco speaks of the “mass awakening” among consumers and chefs regarding healthier food and lifestyles, and how food providers have had to be responsive to these needs. “Most people want to make a good choice,” he says. “It’s up to us to provide them with an endless amount of good choices.” Randy feels that our nation’s health care model is fundamentally wrong and that we need to take a decades-long view when we consider how to fix it. “We have been tweaking a model that doesn’t work. …If we could go back and change [how Medicare and Medicaid were structured in the 1960s], we would shift the balance toward primary care and mental health services… The fact that we don’t provide a base level of coverage to every American doesn’t make any sense.” He believes we need to start now to change the system into what we want it to be in 20 years.
