Warum wurde Texas nach dem Bürgerkrieg zum vielleicht wildesten Pflaster des gesamten Westens? Warum häuften sich dort Schießereien, Gesetzlosigkeit und politische Gewalt gerade in den Jahren nach 1865 so extrem? Die Antwort liegt in einer Zeit, welche die USA zum Teil noch bis heute prägt: der Reconstruction. Als der Bürgerkrieg 1865 endete, war Texas zwar wieder Teil der Vereinigten Staaten, aber von Stabilität konnte keine Rede sein. Die Sklaverei war abgeschafft, doch damit war die Frage längst nicht geklärt, wie ehemalige konföderierte Staaten wieder in die Union eingegliedert werden sollten - und was die neu gewonnene Freiheit für Millionen ehemaliger Sklaven tatsächlich bedeutete. In Texas trafen militärische Besatzung, politische Machtkämpfe in Washington, alte Sezessionisten, neue republikanische Amtsträger, rassistische Gewalt, wirtschaftliche Krisen und ein weitgehend zusammengebrochenes Rechtssystem aufeinander. Das Ergebnis war ein Staat im Ausnahmezustand: ganze Landstriche blieben ohne Sheriffs oder sonstige Gesetzeshüter, Richter wurden aus dem Amt entfernt, eine State Police wurde aufgebaut, verhasst und wieder demontiert, während Ku-Klux-Klan und andere Terrorgruppen im Hintergrund mitmischten. Gleichzeitig legten Rinderboom, Eisenbahnausbau und Homestead-Politik den Grundstein für den Aufstieg von Texas - und für viele jener Zustände, die wir heute mit dem Wilden Westen verbinden. Stephen's sermon continues with a long section on Moses, which both disproves the foolish charge that he is blaspheming Moses, and shows that Stephen has a true and accurate grasp on Moses as an example of faith and a type of Christ.In this section Stephen first speaks of all a time of promise, as God proves his faithfulness, prospering his people in Egypt. Then he identifies a deliverer from God, considering the three periods of forty years into which Moses' life can be divided. Then he zeroes in on Moses as a man to consider—a rejected redeemer, a typical prophet, and an oracular preacher.In all this, Stephen is pointing us toward Christ. To know Moses would be to trust Jesus; to trust Jesus is to know God for our salvation.

What does it mean when we call God our Redeemer? Seeing Boaz in action in Ruth 4 gives us a small glimpse of what Jesus has done for us, and the joy he takes in our rescue.
