For those of you who've been around a while, you'll know that before I focused solely on branding I used to run a stationery shop alongside my full-time job, selling at markets on weekends so I know just how hard running a product-based business can be. I'm really excited to share today's episode with retail expert, author of Tame Your Tiger and Resilient Retail founder Catherine Erdly who joined me to talk all things retail. We explore the hurdles that can consume product-based businesses if not addressed effectively. Even if you don't run a product-based business, there's plenty of thought-provoking advice in this episode that I found really helpful and hope you do too. If you're a business owner keen to take charge of your profit this is a great episode to get stuck into. Jess Harrold is joined by deputy editor Tim Burke and reporter Akanksha Soni for the latest weekly round-up. Burke shares insights on the retail sector from this week's EG Interview with former Intu chair and current P-Three consultant, John Strachan – and offers a pair of contrasting stories that illustrate the state of the office market. Soni discusses the housing plans of London mayoral hopeful Samuel Kasumu, and Henley Investment Management's first mixed logistics and residential scheme. Celebrations are in order! May is not only the month of my birthday but it also marks the third anniversary of The Resilient Retail Club. When I started the business back in 2020, I never set out to create a membership, but instead planned to offer courses, starting with my ‘Grow Your Sales' course back when I used to operate as ‘Future Retail'. But with the challenges presented by COVID and the subsequent lockdowns, I pivoted from offering courses to creating a community where people could come get the support they needed - and, as they say, the rest is history. It's been an absolute joy and privilege to work with so many small businesses and such wonderful people since starting my business, so in today's podcast, I want to share my top ten highlights from the last three years of running the Resilient Retail Club. I'll be talking about the strength of our community, sharing our weekly and quarterly wins and the reward of running a business that does good. We'll also talk about the importance of celebrating each other, the delights of meeting in person and how the club helped shape my new book: ‘Tame Your Tiger'. My first book, “Tame Your Tiger: How to stop your product business eating you alive“ was finally released this week and I couldn't be more excited to share it with you! To really celebrate this momentous occasion, I've decided to spend this episode of The Resilient Retail Game Plan sharing an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look into the book, where I'll discuss my writing process, who the book's for and why I wrote it, as well as the key learnings and takeaways small businesses can hope to find within its pages. But today's podcast comes with one major twist in the form of today's guest - in that today's guest is me! That's right, it's a Resilient Retail role reversal, where I'm being interviewed by none other than fellow author (‘Hype Yourself') and PR expert, Lucy Werner. Throughout our discussion of the development and evolution of the book, we touch on numerous topics such as the lessons that small businesses can learn from big-budget corporate strategy, and the ever-present tension between the creative impetus that leads many people to start their own businesses and the need to be on top of your numbers. We also cover my favourite tip from the book and most importantly deconstruct the three problem areas that constitute an untamed tiger. Episode 346: Ann Anderson Transforms from Corporate Executive to Resilient Retail Specialist Episode Notes In 2019, Ann Anderson's aspirations changed. She left her 31-year corporate career with TIME, Inc. to launch Retail Partner Solutions, Inc. We discuss how she went from an employee mindset to acquiring an entrepreneurial mindset and the resiliency it took to land on her feet as the retail industry remarkably changed forever in 2020. Ann Anderson, MBA, has three decades worth of retail expertise. Her enthusiasm for getting client products into big retail stores like Target, Costco, and Walmart is make-it-or-break-it for clients. Ann does whatever it takes to move herself and her clients forward. She strategically works the odds of success in her client's favor. Ann has this relatable quality that is part of resiliency. Relating skillfully to others and our world makes us feel safe and connected and helps us bounce back from failures and heartbreak. In Ann's younger years, you will hear the strategy behind her three strengths in relating. According to Rick Hanson, Ph.D., resilient individuals have three strengths they exercise when relating: courage, aspiration, and generosity. I re-listened to this 2021 conversation with Ann. The anxiety I felt quickly dissolved as I relaxed into the conversation and connected with Ann's upbringing. It is comforting to hear how her Italian Mother and German Father raised her and Ann's two brothers. Ann says, “I come from a family of strength.” She and her husband, Howard Anderson, have passed the baton of strength to the next generation by raising two resilient adult children. Ann has been a client of mine since 2019. Every time we have a conversation, I witness greatness in the making. Being a quick and enthusiastic sponge absorbing as much learning as her mind can take in fuels her entrepreneurial leadership. Hear other parts of our inspiring conversation: The most significant shift Ann needed to make in going from a corporate mindset to an entrepreneurial mindset. Being raised by an Italian Mother and German Father. The impact of moving from Michigan to Iowa. Ann's derailed experience with an injury as a gymnast in high school and the courage it took to reshape her aspirations. Ann's two brothers, who liked to play tricks on her, prepared her for speaking up in corporate settings. Early on, when there was a noticeable gender disparity, Ann's courageous voice helped get a girls' sports team started. The gems Ann learned being a senior executive at TIME, Inc. Pitching over 30 products and what she learned starting a business in a pandemic. Her life mentors, including her gymnastics coach and me. Her passion for bridging the gap between buyers and brands. Note how Ann cleverly packaged her retail expertise and got busy connecting with entrepreneurs in the food, beverage, kitchen, and other miscellaneous industries. Getting products in big-box retailers like Target, Walmart, Costco, and others is a hurry-up and wait-for kind of game. As a results-driven executive and retail strategist, Ann continually understands each retailer's processes and timelines. Being skilled at building relationships is a must, and Ann is exceptional at it. DOWNLOAD P.S. Fast forward about one minute to jump into the current information. I also mention the book I am still writing. The title is not yet solidified, but it is about mentoring and how you can be resilient as you evolve with your business. As the days of summer sun start to shorten and we start to pack up our parasols and barbecues, it's time, of course, to turn our thoughts to Christmas. The festive season is of colossal importance to almost every business's sales calendar, but with a seemingly endless torrent of global uncertainties, economic unbalance and rising costs across the board, it's become increasingly difficult to forecast sales, plan ahead and make the best of one of the most lucrative times of the year. So, in today's podcast, I want to give you my top three predictions for Christmas 2022, so you can prepare your business for (almost) every eventuality and end the year on a high. We'll start by looking at matching sales plans to spending patterns, setting expectations and experimenting with price points. We'll also look into how the state of the economy is shifting buying habits and how you can best support your customers in spreading their costs. We'll also revisit our old friend, the value triangle, and discuss why this is not the year to be coy about your pricing.

"I see an enhanced buying opportunity with a 25% pullback on the Home Depot (HD) stock. I think that home improvement may be more resilient than other retailers with a looming recession. After almost exactly two years since it started and with over 53,000 downloads at the time of recording, I'm incredibly pleased to say that we've reached episode 100 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan. It's been my pleasure and privilege to have had so many amazing guests join me on the podcast, and I'm deeply grateful for the time and expertise they've all shared, but this wouldn't happen without you, the listeners, and I can't thank you enough for tuning in, getting in touch and coming on this Resilient Retail journey with me. In today's episode, to celebrate the stories and tips you've found most valuable, we revisit the top five guest episodes as charted by you, the listener. We'll start with Lucy Werner and the concept of personal branding, cover the importance of having a laugh and the value of your own small business community with smallbizmemez and Khaleelah Jones helps illuminate the rather tricky topics of SEO and digital marketing ecosystems. My ex-apprentice Charis Varley will then give us the lowdown on the power of TikTok and we'll wrap up with Charlotte Pierce as we discuss the impact of taking an analogue approach in a digital world. Thank you again to all my guests and listeners - here's to 100 more Resilient Retail success stories - see you next time!
Whether it's via 1-2-1 calls or strategy meetings, through my mentoring sessions or community chat, or in-person and at live events, as you'd expect, I speak to many, many product business owners on a daily basis. And when you literally ‘talk shop' day-to-day, as I do, you begin to not only start seeing patterns in the way that businesses operate and the ways in which the industry works, but you also gain important insights into the personal experiences of founders - and the main thing I'm hearing at the moment is that things feel tough. So, in episode 95 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I want to give you a bit of a pep talk. I in no way want to diminish or underestimate the effect that inflation, the war in Ukraine, the cost of living and energy costs are having on everyone's lives (business owner or not). What I do want to do is help you focus on the things that are within your control and help you to feel more sure-footed in a time of great instability. In this podcast, we'll discuss the risks inherent in blaming poor sales on external factors, and the importance of asking more of yourself. We'll also talk about revitalising your products and why securing a supplementary income could be the best thing for your business.

Writing a book has been on my to-do list for quite a while now, and nothing lights a fire under your feet and gets a project moving than telling people you're working on something - so here I am, sharing an excerpt from the unedited first draft of my yet to be released book! My goal has been to make a practical book that covers three main objectives: To allow readers to self-diagnose their businesses and to help highlight the challenges that are unique to product businesses To help readers understand and measure the key numbers within their businesses and identify what areas need attention And to help readers to use all this information to plan for the future accordingly I find it's often the case that people start their own businesses to escape the corporate world and embrace their inner creativity - the last thing you want is for your own personal endeavours and passion projects to be leaving you stressed and out-of-pocket - my hope is that my book will be able to give readers the tools to make a success of their product businesses and for them to feel good whilst doing it! Please do jump on to the Resilient Retail social media channels and let me know what you think! As I say, this is the first un-edited draft, so it'd be great to hear all your thoughts!
Whether this is your first festive sales season or you're a Christmas retail veteran there'll always be challenges to overcome and surprises you didn't anticipate. Everyone's business is different and operates with its own set of rules and idiosyncrasies, which means even with the best direction from dependable sources it can feel like much of the advice available is a bit abstract when comes to trying to apply it to your own business. So, for today's episode, I've enlisted the help and perspectives of three of my Resilient Retail club members to try and give you some real-life examples of how to prepare yourself and manage your business this Christmas. I am delighted to introduce Rani of ‘Plant A Bloomer' - who offers gifts and cards to plant and craft, Annabelle of ‘Copper and Holly', who runs a Brecon-based Autumn and Christmas pop-up shop and Emily, the owner of Cotswolds gift boutique ‘Wild At Heart'. From organising online sales fulfilment to staffing physical stores, the experiences of these wonderful business owners hopefully go some way to speaking to some of the challenges you might experience this season. In this episode, we discuss working with fulfilment centres and managing third-party relationships, the time it takes for trends to filter through to different communities, the importance of organising training, purchasing early for the big day and much, much more! Retail is supposed to consist of humans helping one another to find products that improve our lives. During the pandemic, that was challenged. One of the companies helping to bridge the gap was HERO, which strives to bring together the best of the retail world and the digital world. HERO has helped companies like Nike and Liberty London to keep retail associates employed by breaking down traditional retail silos. Founder and repeat Resilient Retail guest Adam Levene describes how HERO brings the warmth of the human touch to digital, and incorporates the ease of digital technology into physical spaces. In essence, they’ve helped to push the creative boundaries of retail in order to meet customers exactly where they are. There's been a massive sea change in recent years when it comes to consumers and the relationships that they have, and maintain, with the people, companies and even industries that they buy from. We've seen this in the advent of conscious consumerism and through the more recent drive to support small businesses in the wake of COVID-19. Part of this shift in consumer mindset can be attributed to the access and visibility created by social media - never before have we, as customers, had such unbridled access to and power over our favourite brands. Showing people behind the scenes, sharing the processes that get your products to market and letting your customers voices be heard has never been more important when attempting to develop long-lasting, personal relationships with the buying public. But cultivating an earnest brand that speaks to its audience in an organic way is no mean feat. That's where today's Resilient Retail guest, Manmeet Sokhi, comes in. Since starting White Rain Designs around 6 years ago, Manmeet has steadily grown her personalised ceramics business. From originally working at a ‘Paint-Your-Own' studio, through working weekends to getting her own kiln, the last year and a half has seen her small product business really take off! In today's episode, we discuss her foray into the world of Instagram, the value of organic engagement and how taking the opportunity to co-create with your community of customers can open up possibilities you might never have considered; as well as the importance of taking the time to create impactful content and setting social media boundaries. Check out Manmeet's beautiful ceramics at https://whiteraindesigns.com/ and you can follow and connect with Manmeet at: https://www.facebook.com/WhiteRainDesigns/ https://www.instagram.com/whiteraindesigns/

Welcome back to the final episode of my three-part analysis of the 2021 Resilient Retail Product Business Survey. In the previous two episodes, we've had a look at the numbers that the 300 plus respondents submitted, in an effort to find some realistic benchmarks to work against, and we also reviewed how those business owners used marketing to help build their brands and increase their sales. In episode 36 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan I'll be counting down the top 11 results for each of the two questions I asked at the very end of the survey. The first was: “What was the one thing that made the difference?” And the second was: “What was your biggest learning?” We'll discuss the value of strong product photography and branding, the synergy between sales channels and your customers, and cultivating a community around your brand through recommendations and social media. We'll also look at the importance of being persistent, consistent and flexible across all aspects of your business, how relationships with PR and influencers can sometimes be a bit of a double-edged sword, and how one of the biggest barriers to your success could be you! Today's guest Kristen is the host of Resilient Retail, a podcast she runs with her role with Shopify Retail team, helping retailers that have been affected by the pandemic. She is also known as the mayor of DTC Twitter.
Welcome back to my analysis of the 2021 Resilient Retail Product Business Survey. Last weeks episode was all about the numbers, and hopefully, you were able to draw inspiration from some of my key takeaways and use the statistics I shared to help you benchmark whereabouts your business currently stands and what you can do to help it grow. In today's episode, we take a look at one of the most important elements of running a small product business - marketing! Marketing is a subject that I've discovered can cause a lot of stress to small business owners - many founders report being concerned over how to best approach showcasing and sharing their goods with potential customers, and with so many different avenues of outreach and audience engagement it can be tough working out where to begin. So in Episode 35 of the Resilient Retail Game Plan, I'll be looking at where people are selling their products, how much they're spending on getting them in front of people and how this all affects turnover. We'll look at the power of social media and discuss which platforms see the most success; the correlation between time invested and sales made; and whether businesses are effectively leveraging email marketing and paid advertising. Get your copy of the report at www.resilientretailclub.com/survey
I'm excited to announce that this episode marks the start of my deep-dive into the long-awaited results of my recent product business survey. There's a number of reasons I wanted to run a survey, partly to see whether certain patterns had changed since my 2019 study, but namely, it's because there aren't many benchmarks out there that convey the true reality of running a product business. It's easy to get disheartened, or misled, by a lot of the messaging aimed at small businesses, so it's with the information kindly provided to me by over 300 respondents that I hope to give you some useful statistics and a clearer picture of the world in which you work. We'll look at everything from conversion rates to what selling channels are most popular, as well as the mix of roles and products that make up people's businesses. I also review the importance of taking into account the age of a business in relation to things like turnover and how paying yourself is possible if you just commit to it! She also talks about how she navigated rising to the occasion when the stakes got high: Kristen was told just days into her new job at Shopify that she'd be taking over the podcast hosting duties from Harley Finklestein, the company's president. And then she learned that he'd be her first interview guest for the show. Talk about pressure! A key component to Kristen's, and by extension the show's, success is how much thought went into developing the show's premise. Also critical is that Kristen has a deep understanding of the retail world and she is actively involved in the community she serves. In other words, she knows who her audience is and the type of information they will benefit from, and then she goes and gets it. Resilient Retail launched in October of 2020 and is a twice-weekly interview show that focuses on the world of retail, with a particular focus on serving small business owners trying to figure out the online space. Resilient Retail also has a YouTube channel and a robust five-year growth plan that extends far beyond the podcast. Please join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks with Kristen about all that she has learned and how she's applying that to create just the right kind of interview show that will serve her growing audience.INTRODUCING GROWABLE SHOWS, a new on-demand course about show development from Jay:https://jayacunzo.com/growable-showsJOIN THE NEWSLETTER: Subscribe to “Playing Favorites,” Jay Acunzo's weekly email, and get 1 new concept or technique every Friday morning to help you create your audience's favorite things: marketingshowrunners.com/subscribe/. The summit featured 10 sessions across 2 days presented by an amazing range of industry experts with backgrounds and experience as diverse as email marketing, PR, wholesaling, and social media. So, with the festive season not far off, it is in Episode 11 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan that I want to run through and expand on what I consider to be 9 key takeaways and common themes from these sessions, to help get your creative product business ready for Christmas 2020. We'll take a look at the importance of how you show up for your business, online and off, by sharing the ever-growing story about you and your products with your customers. We'll discuss how to get prepared, for not only the festive period but pre and post-Xmas, and we'll also talk about strategizing, doubling-down on your business plans and further identifying your ideal clients to help build loyalty at a time when your business is at it's most visible - and that's just for starters! 2020 has been a rough year but people are determined, more than ever, to have a good Christmas, so tune in for some great advice, from the best professionals in their fields, that you can use to help increase your sales this season.
