We are a stagnant society because we are not allowed to make decisions for ourselves, even if we were capable of the independent thought required to make those decisions. “[W]hat are the odds—and how can we expect—that we will have raised a generation of Americans with the strength and wisdom to care properly for themselves, their families, and their country?” writes Mike Stenhouse of the Rhode Island Center for Freedom & Prosperity....Article Link

For this week's episode of Rhody Radio, we're bringing you a presentation by Michael Fine, M.D., who joined the Cranston Public Library on January 11, 2022, to read from his newest book, Rhode Island Stories. This collection of short stories provides marvelous insight into some very unique personalities and situations in our home state. You can purchase Rhode Island Stories at Dr. Fine's website - michaelfinemd.com - or request it from your local Ocean State Library. Thanks for listening! Please rate and review Rhody Radio wherever you get podcasts, and if you enjoyed this episode we'd be honored if you would share it with a friend. Theme music for this episode is Inner City Smiling by John Bartmann. Rhody Radio is proud to be a resident partner of the Rhode Island Center for the Book and is brought to you by library staff and community members all around the Ocean State. Michael Fine, M.D. has been an advocate for communities, healthcare reform, and the care of under-served populations worldwide for 40 years. His career as a community organizer and family physician has led him to some of the poorest places in the United States, as well as dangerous, war-ravaged communities in developing countries. His experiences across the globe have enabled him to craft numerous short stories, novels and healthcare policy books about how we can change the world by empowering, caring for, and educating one another. “Literature and imagination can build a better world. Imagination can help us see one another and envision what we can do together when we stop fighting and start dreaming,” says Fine. “I don't think I know anything that other people haven't known for years. I just think of myself as a man who is too stubborn to accept the world as it is, and too pigheaded to accept no for an answer when someone asks if there is a better way." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rhodyradio/message

Tochi Onyebuchi joined the Providence Community Library as part of their PCL Reads series on Wednesday, February 10th to discuss Riot Baby, a companion read for the 2021 Reading Across Rhode Island program. Co-hosted virtually by Amy VanderWeele at South Providence Library and Rhode Island Center for the Book, the conversation was moderated by Jonathan Pitts-Wiley, the Artistic Director of Mixed Magic Theatre (MMT) in Pawtucket. To watch a recording of the interview, visit the Providence Community Library Youtube Page. Find Riot Baby at your local library, as an ebook through RI's eZone, or contact Amy Vanderweele at the South Providence Library for multiple copies for a book club. The music in this episode is Soft Inspiration by Scott Holmes. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of Beasts Made of Night, its sequel Crown of Thunder, War Girls, and his adult fiction debut “Riot Baby,” published by Tor.com in January 2020. He has graduated from Yale University, New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia Law School, and L'institut d'études politiques with a Masters degree in Global Business Law. His short fiction has appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction, Omenana, BLACK ENOUGH: STORIES OF BEING YOUNG & BLACK IN AMERICA, and elsewhere. His non-fiction has appeared in Uncanny Magazine, Nowhere Magazine, Tor.com and the Harvard Journal of African-American Public Policy. He is the winner of the Ilube Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novel by an African and has appeared in Locus Magazine's Recommended Reading list. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Connecticut, Tochi is a consummate New Englander, preferring the way the tree leaves turn the color of fire on I-84 to mosquitoes and being able to boil eggs on pavement. He has worked in criminal justice, the tech industry, and immigration law, and prays every day for a new album from System of a Down. ABOUT THE BOOK Rooted in foundational loss and the hope that can live in anger, “Riot Baby” is both a global dystopian narrative and intimate family story with quietly devastating things to say about love, fury, and the black American experience. Ella and Kev are brother and sister, both gifted with extraordinary power. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by structural racism and brutality. Their futures might alter the world. When Kev is incarcerated for the crime of being a young black man in America, Ella―through visits both mundane and supernatural―tries to show him the way to a revolution that could burn it all down. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rhodyradio/message

He's won 12 tournaments and at one time ranked 42nd on the PGA tour. He has donated millions in charity to needy children in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. Now for our feature story: Housing advocates want state leaders in Rhode Island to enact a ban on residential evictions following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the federal moratorium. “The governor and the General Assembly have the authority to protect the public's health with a moratorium,” said Jennifer L. Wood, executive director of the Rhode Island Center for Justice, which has been helping struggling tenants in securing federal rent assistance. The office of Gov. Dan McKee expressed disappointment with the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday. Alana O'Hare, a spokesperson for the governor said: “As we explore all available options to keep Rhode Islanders in their homes, we urge those at risk of eviction to apply for assistance through RentReliefRI,” For more about the coronavirus pandemic and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Art was athletic in his younger years, playing basketball and practicing judo. He was a lifeguard at Misquamicut Beach in the '50s, and helped rescue people during Hurricane Carol in '54. He was a keen bowler, both in-person and on the Wii, putting away many perfect games. He tried his hand at golf -most famously his shot off the tee on the 5th hole at Pond View -which somehow flew backwards and broke a window in a home behind the tee. Art was quite the pool-shark, giving folks at the Senior Center a run for their money. Art was a family man-always making sure everyone was taken care of, and was always available for sage advice and kind words. His family loved him fiercely and will miss him always. He leaves his wife of 64 years, son, daughter and grand-daughter. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Art's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield!

Without a doubt, it is now clear Senator Lindsey Graham is executing the familiar chaff and countermeasure approach to cover-up the former administration surveillance abuses. Here are four specific reasons that clarity is assured. For generations, American politicians have promised reducing—or even eliminating—poverty as one of their goals. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson went so far as to declare an “unconditional war” on poverty. Lenette Azzi-Lessing warns, however, that the rhetoric of fighting poverty has become a war on the poor with devastating consequences for America’s most vulnerable children. Azzi-Lessing is Clinical Professor of Social Work at Boston University and author of “Behind from the Start: How America’s War on the Poor is Harming Our Most Vulnerable Children.” She founded the nationally recognized Rhode Island Center for Children At-Risk, now named Children’s Friend, in 1989 to address the social service and behavioral health needs of highly vulnerable young children and their families. Azzi-Lessing is a member of the Child Welfare League of America’s National Joint Commission, she has co-chaired the League’s Committee on Prevention, Protection, and Family Preservation, and has been an expert witness in federal court on behalf of children abused and neglected in the child protective system. In 2017, Azzi-Lessing was named a Fulbright Specialist focused on higher education and training in nations across the globe. She also helped develop Graduate Certificate Programs in Early Childhood Development and Family Support in South Africa with colleagues from the University of Fort Hare, East London, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

Ep 518 | Original Air Date May 27, 2019 In April 2014, officials in Flint, Michigan, switched the source of the city’s water from the Detroit water supply to the Flint, River. It was a cost-saving move, but it touched the lives of citizens across that city. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha helped blow the story open. With science and determination, she proved the decision was poisoning the children of Flint. An associate professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University, Dr. Mona is also the founder and director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative, a model program to mitigate the impact of the Flint water crisis so that all Flint children grow up healthy and strong. She is also the author of What the Eyes Don’t See, a memoir of her role in exposing the Flint water crisis, which was the Rhode Island Center for the Book’s selection for Read Across Rhode Island, it’s annual state-wide read.
