Balance doesn't always look perfectly straight and I notice with balance, you're trying to pull back to the center, at least when I do it. Knowing what the center is and being able to come back to that regularly is very important. And more seva, "śuśrūṣoḥ śraddadhānasya vāsudeva-kathā-ruciḥ syān mahat-sevayā viprāḥ puṇya-tīrtha-niṣevaṇāt"; it's a way in which when we do seva, we get a deeper desire to hear and chant and when we hear and chant, we get a deeper desire, they're complimentary. So it's nice to notice it and be aware of how we're feeling, and make sure that we're feeling okay. It's important to take care of ourselves. Senior Yoga Teacher, Vani Shukla returns to introduce us to the "Principles and Benefits of Yoga Practice" - a journey towards self-awareness, inner peace and balance. Vani commenced with the very basics: correcting the "strine" pronunciation of Yoga "Yow - (as in "row"-a-boat" - Gar" to "Yo-ga" - with a shortened "o" and "u" as a very basic first step towards showing some credibility in our understanding of Yoga. "Yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root - "Yuj" meaning to unite or join "individual consciousness" with "universal consciousness". Vani then introduced us briefly to the "8 Limbs of Yoga" known as Ashtanga Yoga. As with the limbs of the human body, the 8 Limbs of the Ashtanga - must also grow together: Limb 1 - Yama; Limb 2 - Niyama; Limb 3 - Asana (Physical postures); Limb 4 - Pranayama (Breathing practices); Limb 5 - Pratyahar (Control of senses); (Limbs 6 & 7 - Dhana and Dhyana (Meditation practices); Limb 8 - Samadhi (The "Balanced state of Being"). Under Vani's expert guidance, we then - very briefly - put the Ashtanga into practice in what little time remained.

After two back-to-back Kālī pūjās and a few all nighters, we plunge into a discussion of Mā Kālī's non-dual aspect, to commemorate the Shyama Kali Puja of 2023. My idea was to explore the role of the ferocious iconography around Mā, a few verses of the Candi indicated Her non-dual nature as Pure Consciousness and some similar iconography and motifs from other world spiritual traditions to present the idea that Mā is more than a Goddess in a pantheon but rather the Principle of Creative Power par excellence, the energy of Consciousness inseparable from Consciousness Herself, that is worshipped all over the world beyond the cultural confines of India. She alone exists as the sole reality. But alas, at many points in this lecture, stunned by the sheer magnitude of Mā Kālī's formless nature (and perhaps also a little fried from the back-to-back pujas), I lapse into silence and resort to the third hymn of the Candi to make some preliminary passes at the topic. Then, when I recover from my little episode, we explore the first idea: the mortuary imagery to make a point about Tantrik sādhanās aimed at attaining Mā's non-dual darshan! This episode is dedicated to clarification of a podcast between Joe Rogan and Max Lugavere, two popular influencers that have a large audience. They discussed Alzheimer's disease and brain health in general and some of the information that was shared was not accurate, which can be really harmful. This is by no means an attack on Rogan or Lugavere. After listening to the conversation, we think Lugavere may not be quite familiar with the data regarding brain health, and it would be important to set the record straight and share the evidence with people and let them decide what's best for them. Having seen thousands of patients with dementia, whether it's Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobe dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and others, we feel it's our responsibility to share evidence based data as opposed to feel-good, self confirming anecdotes. The Sanskrit word Sādhana has a number of meanings but is most often used as “the means by which we can achieve the goal of life.” It speaks to the spiritual process of cultivating a “spiritual life” and the importance of developing a regular practice. After looking at the more ancient practice of Sādhana outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga-sutra I summarized what a personal practice could look like considering the following essential components. · Immersion in that which is transcendental (the regular meditation upon spiritual sound) · Hearing from spiritual authority · Making your life a life of spiritual service · The cultivation of “theistic conduct” - Practice gratitude, patience/tolerance, humility, kindness Start with following a guided meditation daily. There are links below to some learning and guided meditations you can use to build a daily practice or Sādhana. Some of the quotes I used: When impurities are destroyed by practicing the eight limbs of yoga, enlightenment dawns, culminating in full knowledge of the self/atma. Yoga Sūtra 2.28 Control of the senses (yama), observance of rules (niyama), bodily postures (asana), regulation of the breath (pranayama), the withdrawal of the mind from sense objects (pratyahara), focusing the mind on a chosen object (dharana), meditation (dhyana), and complete absorption in trance (samadhi) are the eight limbs of yoga. Yoga Sūtra 2.29 Non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, celibacy and freedom from possessiveness make up the yamas. Yoga Sūtra 2.30 These laws are universal and must be practiced without consideration of time, place, birth or circumstances. Together they constitute the "great vow" of life. Yoga Sūtra 2.31 The niyamas (observances) are internal and external purity, contentment, acceptance of austerity, the recitation of sacred mantras and study of Vedic texts, and complete devotion and surrender to God. Yoga Sūtra 2.32 The highest state of spiritual devotion/realization is attained by slow degrees by the method of constant endeavor for self-realization with the help of scriptural evidence, theistic conduct and perseverance in practice. - Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.59 Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform -- do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me. – Bhagavad-gītā 9.27 Playlist of guided meditations: https://soundcloud.com/acharyadas/sets/meditations-for-wellbeing A very simple yet powerful guided meditation: https://soundcloud.com/acharyadas/guided-meditation-for-inner-peace-wellbeing A guided meditation incorporating breath and mantra: https://soundcloud.com/acharyadas/breath-and-gauranga-mantra Learning to do Japa: https://acharyadas.com/3-mantra-meditation-japa/ A wonderful daily guided meditation track incorporating breath, mantra, japa, then a kirtan: https://soundcloud.com/acharyadas/mymeditation A suite of videos teaching different mantra meditation practices: https://acharyadas.com/series/mantra-meditation-discover-and-try/
According to a recent article from MedpageToday: “A healthy lifestyle was tied to a longer life but the extra years did not mean more time living with Alzheimer's dementia.According to the article, “An estimated 6.5 million adults in the U.S. have dementia. The national cost of caring for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias is an estimated $321 billion in 2022, according to the Alzheimer's Association. In addition, family members and friends contribute $271 billion more in unpaid care.”So, what can we do??In this episode, we discuss a recent study by researchers from the Rush University Medical Center (below) and changes we can make spanning diet, cognitive activity, physical exercise, smoking, and alcohol patterns to age well.Dhana, K. et al. In a time when humanity struggles to avert a climate crisis, there's a glimmer of hope for the fashion industry to be able to contribute to saving the environment. With the help of the right people and technology, being both environmentally friendly and fashionable at the same time can be achieved. In our last episode for the Earth Month celebration, we bring back this fantastic conversation with Shamini Dhana from October 2020. Yeshe Tsogyal, the leading female presence of Tibet, appears in two distinct genres of literature, autobiographical and ritual practice texts (sādhana). In this talk, Anne Carolyn Klein/Rigzin Drolma drew on recent practice texts related writings to conclude that this sādhana is at core a conversation about one's own relation to a divine feminine, which gradually reveals a wholistic divine, a non-binary writ large, that is nonetheless fully feminine in image and metaphor.
