James Cameron-Wilson found #1, the horror spoof Scary Movie shouty and exhausting, emerging despairing for humanity. The brief trailer, however, is quite funny. #13 Savage House feels like a Jacobean tragedy but is an original, supposedly a satire on our own times. Starring Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy, it's supposedly a black comedy but the tone left James depressed. It is well made, with excellent production values, but while grotesque, it is not funny. However, he does recommend Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix. Starring Sally Fields, who is on excellent form in her 80th year, it is a funny, touching movie set in an aquarium, with Alfred Molina voicing a wise octopus. Set in a timeless backwater full of eccentrics it has real heart and is frequently very funny. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

You can find Meredith Doench at www.meredithdoench.com or on IG at @meredithdoench   If you've listened to our show for a while, you may be aware that we've interviewed several Ohio authors. Katrina Kittle, Erin Flanagan, Christina Consolino, and Sharon Short (who has also published under the name Jess Montgomery) have all been guests and all are part of a writing group called the Cute City Bitches.    But there was one writer in that group whom we hadn't yet interviewed, but now we have. We're delighted she joined us to talk about her latest book titled Never Say Die, a novel about a detective named Rory Scott who has to contend with her own mother-daughter issues when someone in the community for the second time in six years, kidnaps a young girl and murders a teenager. Meredith talks to us about her love of crime novels and how writing and marketing novels with LGBTQ characters has changed since she began publishing.    Our book rec segment of the show this week focuses on books with unusual narrators. 1962's State Fair marked the third screen adapatation of the novel by Phil Stong.  As in 1945, this one was a musical but a big, colorful, expansive musical that Hollywood was so good at in the 1960's.  Starring heartthrobs Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret, it's the story of the Frake family and their ambitions to win big at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.  Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote new music for the film, one of the few musicals written expressly for the big screen, and several plot elements were added or changed to make this version more contemporary.  Tom Ewell, Alice Faye (coming out of retirement) and Pamela Tiffin round out the Frake family. Dan and Vicky discuss the film as well as some recently seen movies like Obsession, Apex, Tuner, Is God Is, and Remarkably Bright Creatures.    Our socials:  hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast X: @HotDate726

On this weeks second helpings, MJ and Jackie are talkin' 'bout the film of the year "The Sheep Detectives" and how it might have brought a tear to James' eye (shhh, don't tell anyone), a new trailer for the Jimmy Stewart film staring KJ Apa and it sure is something, plus MJ's graduating from grad school! Clay Aiken has new music and it does NOT change anything for MJ (or so they say) and speaking of watching someone sleep, Jackie went to watch "Obsession". MJ successfully convinced Gideon to watch "Widows Bay", Jackie reports that "Remarkably Bright Creatures" was beautifully done, and Jessica Simpson spoke out to clear the air and throw her mom directly under the plane wheels when it came to her being in first class sans kids. Paul Hollywood got pulled over racin' to get his cat to the vet, and MJ watched the documentary "The Crash" on Netflix, Jackie also watched "The Devil's Wears Prada" and she says it's a PRADAuct of its time, plus even more on this week's Second Helpings! Wells turned 42, threw his back out from a sneeze, and found his “first foray in the nether regions.” Meanwhile, Brandi just got back from Vegas where she DJ'd the ACMs pre-show, played every commercial break, never ate, barely saw her friends, and somehow still looked incredible. This week we're talking ACM highlights (Ella Langley swept 7 awards, Avery Anna broke brains, and Kacey Musgraves' new single has already moved in rent-free), a long list of favorite things (below), the Benson Boone mullet-mustache epidemic that needs to stop immediately, and Brandi and Matt's ongoing battle over who wins what in their Nashville renovation. And if that's not enough to reel you in... How about a riveting discussion about death row meals, annoying Vegas travel or which LA Mexican restaurant Wells should get his margarita fishbowl at? Best known for his unforgettable turn as Jackie Chiles, the fast-talking, high-powered attorney Kramer turns to in Seinfeld, actor Phil Morris joins us for a thoughtful, funny, and full-circle conversation about legacy, identity, and the unexpected paths that lead to a life in show business!Phil shares how his portrayal of the character, famously inspired by Johnnie Cochran, took on a life of its own, leading to national commercial campaigns and even a memorable Honda spot directed by the Coen Brothers. He recalls his Seinfeld audition, in Jerry's office with Johnnie Cochran's  rhythms and intonations fresh in his mind since they shared the same barbershop! But as Jackie Chiles' spotlight brightened, the line between inspiration and frustration blurred, culminating in an unexpected cease and desist letter from Johnnie Cochran himself and an awkward barbershop encounter in which Johnnie had to concede that Phil is very funny! Our conversation also explores Phil's remarkable Hollywood lineage. As the son of Greg Morris, star of the original Mission: Impossible, Phil reflects on how his father's network TV starring role suddenly transformed their family's life, and handed them all the weight of being a uniquely high profile example of black representation on television at the time. He shares how a single appearance by his father on The Dick Van Dyke Show helped pave the way for what would eventually become The Cosby Show, and how his own path into acting began almost by accident while working on set as a production assistant.Phil went on to work alongside his father in the Mission: Impossible reboot, and today continues to bring depth to his roles across mediums, from live action to voice work. A devoted comic book fan with an extensive collection, he discusses how his love of superheroes informs performances like his portrayal of Silas Stone in Doom Patrol.Phil also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the unique process of voice acting, whether collaborating in a room full of actors or performing solo, “opposite” himself, plus the emotional impact of meeting fans at conventions who credit his work with making a real difference in their lives. Then we get into an IMDB Roulette that delves deep into some roles while requiring discretion in discussing others! In current recommendations --Weezy: Movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures in theaters and streaming on NetflixLisa: Netflix documentary series, Should I Marry A Murderer?Path Points of Interest:Phil Morris IMDBPhil Morris on WikipediaPhil Morris on InstagramPhil Morris on FacebookPhil Morris on CameoRemarkably Bright CreaturesShould I Marry A Murderer?
