Richard Lynn was a scientist who infamously tried to estimate the average IQ of every country. Typical of his results is this paper, which ranged from 60 (Malawi) to 108 (Singapore). Lynn's national IQ estimates (source) People obviously objected to this, and Lynn spent his life embroiled in controversy, with activists constantly trying to get him canceled/fired and his papers retracted/condemned. His opponents pointed out both his personal racist opinions/activities and his somewhat opportunistic methodology. Nobody does high-quality IQ tests on the entire population of Malawi; to get his numbers, Lynn would often find some IQ-ish test given to some unrepresentative sample of some group related to Malawians and try his best to extrapolate from there. How well this worked remains hotly debated; the latest volley is Aporia's Are Richard Lynn's National IQ Estimates Flawed? (they say no). On this edition of Parallax Views, geneticist Adam Rutherford joins us to discuss his new, timely book Control: The Dark History and Troubling Present of Eugenics. British philosopher John Gray, author of Stray Dogs, praised Control saying, "[Rutherford's] scientific demolition of the eugenic project is brilliantly illuminating and compelling. His book will be indispensable for anyone who wants to assess the wild claims and counter-claims surrounding new genetic technologies." Believe it or not, the idea, or pseudoscientific mindset as Rutherford refers to it, of eugenics did not die with WWII and the atrocities of the Nazi Third Reich. In fact, elements of it still linger in the culture today. This is why Rutherford wrote Control, a book that attempts to explore the history of eugenics, the opposition to it, and the scientific problems with it from the perspective of an accomplished geneticist. In this conversation we discuss not only the history of eugenics, but also the opposition to it from Christian like G.K. Chesterton, eugenics and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, tackling modern eugenicist thinkers like Richard Lynn who offer an intellectual, pseudo-academic sheen to eugenics and the ways in which Rutherford believes we should pushback on their claims, and a even a brief discursion into Adam's work with filmmaker Alex Garland on the Natalie Portman-starring sci-fi movie Annihilation. In this episode we have as our guest Professor Richard Lynn Kremer. He is an emeritus professor of History of Dartmouth College, specialising in the history of science, medicine and technology. He is also the Curator of the Collection of Scientific Instruments at Dartmouth. Our conversation addresses one of Professor Kremer’s main research topics, mathematical astronomy, from Ptolemy to the early modern period. Currently he is part of the ALFA project at the Observatory of Paris and focuses on tables and computations in the medieval and early modern periods. Richard Lynn Bare was arrested for the 1984 murder of Sherry Lyall Hart. In July of 1985, Bare escaped from a NC jail. He has never been located.
