Ep 245: Why Coaching Clients Get Stuck (And How to Fix It Immediately)

The Coaching Hub Podcast

Why do coaching clients so often hit a wall with "I don't know", and how can you as a coach deal with it skillfully - without panicking or falling into quick-fix patterns? In this episode of The Coaching Hub Podcast, I explore what's really happening when clients get stuck and offer practical strategies to turn these moments into breakthroughs.I break down the variety of reasons clients get stuck: nervous system activation, not feeling safe, not ready to share, a simple need for space, or even neurodiversity factors like alexithymia, which make describing emotions difficult. You'll learn why piling on more questions rarely helps, and how offering space, naming patterns, and getting curious (rather than attached to an outcome) can help clients access their own insights. If you want to empower your clients (and yourself) to move forward from uncertainty, this episode will help you reframe those moments and support change more effectively. What's inside:Why "I don't know" from clients shouldn't be seen as a red flag but as a starting point for deeper explorationGiving clients space and allowing silence can lead to meaningful self-reflection and breakthroughs “I don't know" may signal discomfort rather than a lack of desire to engageCoaches should remain curious, notice patterns, and view "I don't know" as valuable data, not a problem to fixSelf-awareness is crucial; coaches' reactions to uncertainty can impact the coaching relationship and client safetyEmbracing and exploring "I don't know" can foster growth, new insights, and a better understanding of client needs.Key Topics Covered:00:00 Intro and what to do when your clients say "I don't know"00:29 Common tendency to over-question when clients seem stuck01:02 Interpreting "I don't know" as a sign of deeper client needs or emotions01:52 The power of allowing space and silence after "I don't know"03:00 Viewing "I don't know" as valuable data or insight03:40 The importance of curiosity over repetition in questioning04:02 Working with clients who struggle to identify or articulate emotions (alexithymia)05:28 Recognising overwhelm, freeze states, and nervous system activation in clients06:36 Revising the belief that coaches must always have answers, and discussing knowledge gaps07:39 The coach's self-awareness and regulation when confronted with client uncertaintyAbout Ruth Kudzi:Ruth is the founder of Optimus Coaching Academy and a well-respected and successful coach, speaker and author who has worked across sectors including leadership, career and more recently business and mindset. If you're a coach or expert, you probably think your biggest problem is client attraction. It's not. You have a trust problem. And you're leaking trust in three specific places in your funnel every single day. In this episode, I name all three, and show you exactly how to fix each one — including the second piece that almost everybody overlooks, which is the thing that makes people show up to your calls already trusting you. I break down why talking to everybody in your ads is the kiss of death under Facebook's new Andromeda system, what an authority masterclass actually needs to do (hint: it's not teaching), and why the industry-standard 15-20% close rate is a symptom of pitching instead of diagnosing. I also walk through the five specific belief shifts your masterclass needs to engineer before anyone ever books a call with you. If your cost per booked call keeps climbing and nothing you try seems to fix it, this episode will show you exactly where the breakdown is happening. "Being trustworthy isn't enough. You also have to sell and market in a way that builds trust at every step."

AI is everywhere. Anyone can ask ChatGPT a health question and get an answer in two seconds. So why would a health coach bother writing a blog post? Because a blog that's built to convert clients is a completely different thing from the content your audience is already drowning in, and Jana Osofsky has spent years figuring out exactly how to build one. Jana joins Michelle to talk about the capsule blog: a library of 12 to 20 intentionally chosen posts built around what your potential clients need to hear before they're ready to say yes to your offer. They get into why most coaches are writing the wrong things entirely, how to use AI without having your blog sound like everyone else's, and why "you're not a blogger, you're a coach with a blog" might be the most important reframe for any growing health coaches. Jana and Michelle are also teaching a free live training on June 18th on exactly how to build your capsule blog and use it to sign clients on repeat. Ep 90 How to Get More Coaching Clients Through Referrals (Without Feeling Salesy)

The Coaching Edge: A Business Building Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2026 49:35

Here's something most coaches know but don't act on: referrals are the single best source of clients. People who come to you through a referral already trust you. They've heard about you from someone they respect. The sale is half made before you even get on the call. And yet — most coaches leave referrals entirely to chance. They hope their happy clients will spread the word. They assume if someone loved working with them, they'll naturally tell others. But hope isn't a strategy. This episode kicks off a five-part series called "The Conversations That Build Coaching Businesses." Over the next five weeks, we're going beyond the discovery call and into the conversations most coaches avoid, fumble through, or never think to have. We're starting with the referral conversation — how to ask for referrals in a way that feels natural, not awkward or desperate, and actually works. I'm sharing stories from my own business, including a CEO client who came back three years later with a referral, the family doctors who became consistent referral partners early in my career, and how I've built cross-referral relationships with coaches in adjacent niches. Plus, I'm giving you specific language you can use — with past clients, current clients, peers, and professional contacts — so you never have to wonder what to say again. In this episode, I cover: Why referrals are your highest-converting source of clients (and why most coaches leave them to chance) The fears and beliefs that keep coaches from asking for referrals Who to ask and when — past clients, current clients, peers, and professional contacts How to build referral relationships with other professionals by asking "What's the gap, and how can I help you fill it?" The power of cross-referrals: finding coaches in adjacent niches who serve the same avatar client Specific language for asking for referrals in different contexts How to make it easy for people to refer you (so they actually do) When formal affiliate or referral programs make sense How to follow up and build a referral culture in your business What to do when someone doesn't refer anyone (and why it's not personal) Coming up in this series: Episode 91: The Networking Conversation Episode 92: The "Not Right Now" Conversation Episode 93: The Price Conversation Episode 94: The Difficult Client Conversation Resources & Links: How to Get New Clients Now FREE Masterclass Business Building support for coaches The Confident Coaching Skills Intensive — now available self-guided Get It Done: Private Coaching with Wendy

Send us Fan MailIn this week's episode 353 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I'm sharing some of the biggest insights that emerged after analyzing 12 different coaching sessions with clients struggling with boundaries, self-care, guilt, resentment, and emotional overwhelm. What became clear is that most people do not actually need more information about boundaries. Many already know what healthy boundaries are intellectually. The deeper struggle is what happens internally when boundaries become emotionally real.I also share an important recovery resource called Survivors of Incest Anonymous (SIA) and why it's so important that more people know this fellowship exists. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include:Why the real issue is often not boundary-setting, but staying connected to yourself during emotional discomfortHow people override their own needs, limits, and truth the moment guilt, anxiety, or tension appearThe difference between discomfort and actual dangerWhy over-giving and people-pleasing are often attempts to create emotional safetyWhat internal safety really means and why it's one of the deepest forms of self-careThis episode explores how many people are not reacting to actual events, but to anticipated guilt, rejection, disappointment, or conflict. And how learning to tolerate emotional discomfort without abandoning yourself changes everything.Because real self-care is not about perfection, productivity, or keeping everyone happy. It's about learning how to stay emotionally anchored in yourself when discomfort appears instead of automatically overriding your own feelings, needs, and limits.Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on living a more whole life and to hear even more about the points outlined above.Thank you for listening! For many coaches just starting out, the single biggest drain on monthly revenue is the absence of one simple document. Robin learned this the hard way, losing close to £24,000 in his first year of coaching before finally fixing it. In this episode, Robin shares the exact mistake that cost him £2,000 a month, how a simple client agreement transformed his retention and cash flow, and why getting clients to sign a contract is about far more than legal protection. In a world flooded with AI-generated content and endless posting, this episode reveals why most online coaches are stuck chasing clients instead of attracting them and breaks down a proven system for turning your message into a client-generating machine . Drawing from years of experience scaling coaching businesses, Jason introduces the "in-demand system," a three-step approach focused on powerful messaging, a strategic content ecosystem, and conversion-driven campaigns that create pre-sold buyers. Instead of relying on volume, algorithms, or vanity metrics, the episode shows how mastering communication, belief-shifting content, and live conversion events can build predictable, sustainable revenue in today's AI-driven market.   "If you're trying to chase the algorithm stuff and you're switching strategies based on that, you're never really able to build something that's foundational. And so when you build your business on quicksand, you're going to always sink. You might be stable for a minute, but it's gonna sink."   Inside This Episode: Strong messaging is the foundation of growth, and saying the right words to the right people drives conversions more than posting volume.  The "in-demand system" works through three steps: refine your message, build a content ecosystem, and run campaigns that convert.  The modern buyer needs multiple touchpoints and long-form engagement, often consuming hours of content before making a purchase.  Shifting core beliefs through content is essential to move prospects from interest to action and create pre-sold clients.  Live masterclasses and structured campaigns are the most effective way to accelerate trust, shorten the sales cycle, and generate consistent revenue.   Connect with Jason Meland: Email: jason@goliveonlinemastermind.com Website: https://www.growmyvisibility.com/ Instagram: @coachjasonmeland Facebook: Jason Meland - In Demand Coach LinkedIn: Jason Meland

If you've hired a coach, taken a program, and learned all the things, but you still don't have coaching clients, this video is the honest conversation you need to hear. It's probably not the program. It's probably not your niche. It's the gap between what you know and what you're actually doing. If you're new to my channel, my name is Debbie Shadid. I'm a Business Growth and Life Coach and the founder of the Business Building Boutique. For over two decades, I've helped women learn how to become coaches, get clients, grow their businesses, and create meaningful income doing work they love.In this episode, I'm calling you out with love. Most coaches who say they're stuck aren't actually stuck on strategy, they're stuck on action. We'll talk about what real marketing looks like in your first year, why you should be spending more time marketing than coaching, and how to break the patterns that are keeping your business from getting off the ground. In this video, we'll walk through:Why most new coaches are doing the wrong work and calling it "building a business"How much time you should actually spend marketing vs. coaching as a beginnerThe hidden traps that keep you stuck (still figuring out your niche, redoing your website, consuming endless content)What real action looks like, five conversations a week, posting even when no one engages, asking for referralsHow to handle the mindset blocks: fear of judgment, imposter syndrome, comparison, and the "I'm not ready yet" trapWhat to do when you bought a program you're not happy with (and how to get your money's worth anyway)The one marketing action to commit to this week to start compounding your resultsHere's the truth: the world needs what you have to offer, but they can only find you if you show up. When you stop watching and start doing, your business stops being an idea and starts becoming real income, real clients, and real impact. This is your wake-up call to do the work.Ready for the kick in the pants that gets you actually moving? Save your seat at my free live workshop. What do you do when a client's financial struggles are tied to addiction? In this episode, Cody brings a real question from a listener about coaching a client who had been making strong financial progress—only to suddenly fall backwards due to substance addiction. What follows is a deeper conversation about how to respond when the issue goes beyond money. Maria shares insight from her background in substance abuse counseling, unpacking how addiction impacts both income and spending, and why progress can quickly reverse when underlying behaviors aren't addressed. They also talk through one of the most important things for coaches to understand: where your role begins—and where it should stop. From the stages of change to the importance of accountability, this episode helps you support your client without stepping outside your lane. If you've ever had a client where the challenge felt bigger than money, this conversation will give you a clearer framework for how to move forward.

Send us Fan MailA cartoon brain doesn't sound like a serious business strategy, yet it brought me $44,600 in coaching clients i 2026 alone and it started with nothing more glamorous than me scrolling on the sofa. I'm breaking down how I took a viral AI trend, found the white space in my niche, and turned a playful “edutainment” format into a repeatable content series that built real authority, real community, and real sales. We get tactical about what made the carousel work: the pattern interrupt that stops the scroll, the first-person “brain voice” that creates emotional intimacy and curiosity, and why one sentence per slide beats big paragraphs for a cold audience. I also share the behind-the-scenes process of making AI-generated visuals fit a cohesive brand aesthetic using ChatGPT for brainstorming and prompt refinement, plus the mindset piece most creators miss: speed to posting beats perfection, and discomfort is often the doorway to the next level of visibility. Then we connect virality to conversion. Going viral isn't the finish line, it's the top of your funnel. I walk you through the exact conversion touch points that turn wide-net content into qualified leads: a clear caption, a pinned comment, simple credibility markers, and a DM trigger word that moves the right people into a call and into your offer. If you're a coach, creator, or service provider trying to build a sustainable audience and a client-getting content system, you'll leave with a blueprint you can adapt to your own voice and niche. Come find me on Instagram @minniecourtneycoach and DM me the word “brain” so I can point you to your next step.Work With MinnieI'm Minnie Courtney. Check out all the episodes in this series at prosperouscoach.com/niche.There's something I hear nearly all new coaches say … they say “there's a real need for that niche” or “that audience really needs help with this”. If I'm their business coach I encourage them to think differently.Shift from tracking needs to tracking wants. In the world of attraction, wants are more compelling than needs with few exceptions. So instead of thinking about a person's or a group's needs, think instead about their wants – the desire that compels them to action. All people have needs. And as newly trained coaches we have a heightened sense of this. But not all people are seekers — people who do invest in their own personal or professional growth. Seekers are people with urgent WANTS. They want something and they are willing to pay well for help to achieve it.Coaches are seekers. But that's just an example to help you realize what a seeker is about. I don't recommend new coaches target other coaches as clients. It's a much over marketed to audience. You want an audience that helps you stand out in the crowd of coaches and other people trying to attract attention.Rhonda Hess helps new coaches leverage their zone of genius into a profitable coaching niche and launch with confidence. For VIP step-by-step support apply  for Rhonda's VIP Coaching Business Breakthrough Program here and she'll be in touch to invite you a discovery call.Or if you're stuck on your coaching niche, grab a Nail Your Niche Strategy Session with Rhonda here.

Launch your podcast or get full podcast management services here: https://rachelafeldman.com/the-healthy-hustle-podcast-agency/ Why Your First 3 Clients Change Everything So I want you to understand — your first three clients are not just about making money. They are about momentum. They give you proof, confidence, and the shift from feeling like you're trying to be a coach… to actually becoming one. "Once you get those first three, everything starts to shift… you stop feeling like you're trying to be a coach and start actively becoming one." You Don't Need a Big Audience One of the biggest myths I see new coaches believing is that they need thousands of followers before they can sign clients. You don't. You don't need a perfect website, branding, or a huge audience. What you do need is: • A clear problem you solve • A simple way to talk about it • The courage to invite people "You don't need 10K followers… what you need is a clear problem you help people solve… and the courage to actually invite people." Your Clients Come from Connection, Not Perfection I see so many coaches stuck in preparation mode. Tweaking graphics. Rewriting bios. Taking another course. All while avoiding the one thing that actually gets clients — connection. Your first clients don't come from perfection. They come from conversations. "Your first clients come from connection, not perfection." Stop Trying to Help Everyone If your message is vague, people won't feel seen. Instead, focus on: • One type of person • One clear problem You want someone to hear your message and immediately think: "That's me." "When we try to help everyone, your message gets weak and vague… pick one type of person and one main problem." Keep Your Offer Simple You don't need a complicated program to start. Your first offer can be: • A 4-week coaching package • A 6-week jumpstart • A single intensive • A beta offer The goal is not perfection. The goal is experience, results, and momentum. "The goal is not to create your forever offer… it's to create an offer that helps someone get a result." Your First Clients Are Already Around You Most people overcomplicate this part. Your first clients are likely: • Friends • Family • Followers • People already watching you These are the easiest people to start with because trust already exists. "It's most likely the people who know you… these are the easiest people to start with." You Have to Tell People You're Open This is where many coaches drop the ball. They post content — but never actually say: "I'm taking clients." You need to be clear. You need to invite. You need to lead. "People cannot hire you if they don't know you exist." Conversations Close Clients Content builds awareness. But conversations build trust and close clients. This looks like: • Responding to comments • Messaging people back • Asking questions • Inviting people to calls "Content can open the door, but conversations close the gap." Don't Ignore Offline Opportunities Not everything happens online. Some of your fastest wins can come from: • Local events • Workshops • Networking • Conversations in real life Sometimes the quickest way to sign a client is to stop hiding behind your phone. You Have to Ask At some point, you need to make an offer. Not pushy. Not salesy. Just clear. Examples: • "I'm opening 3 spots…" • "I'm looking for women who want support with…" • "Send me the word START…" "Your first three clients are not going to come from hoping people figure it out." Your First Clients Are Data Your first clients help you learn: • What people actually need • How they talk about their problems • What objections come up • How to refine your offer They are not meant to be perfect. They are part of the process. "They're feedback, data, market research, and proof of concept." Final Thoughts If you've been waiting to feel ready… Waiting for more followers… Waiting for everything to be perfect… You don't need to wait. You need to start. Your first three clients are already within reach — through the conversations you haven't started yet. "Messy action will build your business faster than perfection ever will."

Why do some entrepreneurs constantly chase clients while others attract buyers who are already sold? In this episode, the speaker reveals the one skill that drives business success across industries: the ability to create demand. Success isn't about talent, experience, or posting more content—it's about messaging that shifts beliefs and makes people feel deeply understood. When you can articulate your audience's problem better than they can, your offer becomes the obvious solution and clients start coming to you.   "Attention comes from giving people answers. Demand comes from naming the question they didn't even know they were asking. And demand is created by one mechanism and one mechanism only, that is belief."   What You'll Learn: Demand creation is the real business skill: Success isn't driven by tactics, sales skills, or content volume—it's driven by messaging that makes people want what you offer before the sales conversation. Attention is not the same as demand: Attention can come from ads or viral content, but demand is when people move from "That's interesting" to "I need this." Sales happen when beliefs shift: People don't buy products—they buy new beliefs about their problem, the urgency to change, and why your solution is the right one. Too much teaching can hurt sales: Purely educational content often creates learners instead of buyers, keeping audiences consuming free information instead of investing. Clear problem articulation creates authority: When you describe your audience's problem better than they can, they assume you understand the solution and trust you to help.   Connect with Jason Meland: Email: jason@goliveonlinemastermind.com Website: https://www.growmyvisibility.com/ Instagram: @coachjasonmeland Facebook: Jason Meland - In Demand Coach LinkedIn: Jason Meland

Years ago, a very quiet young woman walked into one of my very first workshops at a local yoga studio. She wasn't searching for a health coach. In fact, she had never even heard of one. But she was in the room, and I was in the room, and that one hour changed the entire direction of her life. This story (and many others from my own private practice) is why I believe workshops are the fastest way to get health coaching clients, and why I think they matter more today than they ever have. Inside this episode: Why workshops work better than social media or a website for getting clients fast The difference between workshops for your existing audience vs. a brand new one How to get booked at a yoga studio, gym, corporate office, or virtual space even when you have zero connections Why you don't need a certification, a slide deck, or even a finished website to start The seven-step framework inside The Right Room that walks you through exactly how to find and pitch the right venues If you've been struggling to find clients, this might finally be the thing that changes your business… Grab The Right Room at a special listeners-only rate: https://HealthCoachPower.com/Room Connect with me: Facebook group: https://HealthCoachPowerCommunity.com/ Website: https://HealthCoachPower.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/HealthCoachPowerCommunity/
