At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Roberta Groner was ready. She has just had completed the best running of her life, including a marathon PR and first American at the World Championships. Gone were the days of running conservatively while hoping for a negative split. In Atlanta Roberta planned on running at the front with her peers - the other top women in the field. Roberta was eager and anxious to shoot her shot. Then she stepped off the course at mile 17. It took a year and a half for Roberta to shrug off the heaviness of that day. All the expectations. All the effort. All of the sacrifices. And for what... her first DNF? In 2022, Roberta turned it all around when she joined the Central Park Track club as an athlete and coach. From that day forward she started to recapture the spontaneous joy that can come from training, racing, and communing with running friends. Over the next two years she not only embraced the love she had for the sport, she also raced with abandon. Roberta set four American masters records (8k, 10k, 10 mile, and half-marathon) and showed herself, and everyone paying attention, that she was far from done. Roberta arrived in Orlando for the 2024 Trials with redemption on her mind and in her heart. That drive was counterbalanced with joy, love, and a calm confidence. She left Orlando with a 24th place finish and the freedom that comes when a journey of redemption ends in success. Roberta Groner is a 2:29 marathoner, full-time nurse, and mother of three teenage boys. And if that wasn't already enough to juggle, she recently became the road coach of my club team, Central Park Track Club. Roberta is a fiery competitor who runs with heart and pure grit. The tougher the conditions, the better she performs. On 9/27 in the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, where real-feel temps were 105, she finished 6th overall, and was TOP American! Only 34 days later, Roberta came back and scorched a 2:30:12 in the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon, where she was 13th overall, and 4th American. The big themes: -Staying curious—pushing her limits to find the fastest version of herself -Being fearless—taking risks, accepting the chance to rep the USA at World's in Doha despite knowing she would also be running NYC 34 days later -Community—giving back, sharing her journey to inspire her boys & others -Bringing awareness to autism and Soles4Souls -Tapping into the big energy from her running community -Paying it forward—coaching -Imposter syndrome, her favorite races, milestone moments, and personal growth along the journey. On her decision to race World's and NYC 34 days apart: "Being invited to a World's team and putting on your country's colors, who gets to do that? I wanted my boys to see that anything is possible if you work hard, be consistent, and don't give up. Sometimes we have to make a decision on something and I chose it without questioning it. Being fearless and taking a risk and having an opportunity and doing it. Sometimes you just have to say yes, and look what happened." Roberta Groner may have set out on her running journey to inspire her boys, but has accumulated an army of fans and is so easy to root for! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! We are SUPER EXCITED to have our first guest on the show- Lindsey Hein! You have definitely heard of her podcast, “I’ll Have Another With Lindsey Hein”; we loved her recent interview with Courtney Dawalter.  Lindsey says she likes conversations- and she is not kidding! As soon as we started chatting our conversation went ALL OVER the place, from the joy of 4 boys to skincare and back around to the original reason we wanted to talk to her in the first place- body shaming. Big thanks to Karen Schleuter for drawing our attention to that post, you made this all happen! We hope you enjoy this casual, fun, sprawling conversation with Lindsey Hein and hope you can join us in NYC next month for her live podcast session at New York Road Runner Headquarters the Friday before the marathon.   SHOW NOTES It was a PLEASURE and a privilege to speak with Lindsey Hein on the Running Life podcast this week! Lindsey is the host of the “I’ll Have Another” podcast AND, more recently, of the Illuminate podcast. She has interviewed, oh, a few people you may have heard of before (most recently Courtney Dauwalter, winner of the 2019 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France). Lindsey is a longtime runner, a mom of four boys under age 7, and a running coach. She and Coach MK and Coach Sarah had a LOT to talk about, and it began with a story that Lindsey told her audience on social media this past summer. After a tough workout at the track on a hot day (2x800, 1600, 2x800), she said good morning to an older man walking the outer lane, and he responded by telling her that she was getting a belly and recommending that she try doing some crunches. Lindsey, just over a year out from having her fourth baby and feeling QUITE GOOD THANK YOU VERY MUCH about her body, says “I laughed a big hearty laugh and said I have 4 kids, the youngest of which isn’t even one and I told him I am proud of my belly.⁣”    Lindsey’s response was to hand him her phone and ask him to take her photo, and she went home, got her 4 kids breakfasted and bandaided and ready to go to the pool, and then she posted that photo on Facebook.   Many people were horrified at the story that went along with it. The idea that someone had commented on her body like that, recommended she lose 20-25 pounds...it was infuriating. And, frankly, destabilizing. Someone as fit as Lindsey Hein is getting heckled at the track? What hope is there for the rest of us?   This was the moment that connected us with Lindsey for the first time (and thank you Karen Schlueter for making that happen!) and this is where the conversation really begins.   Coach MK and Coach Sarah have talked about body image through a number of different cultural artifacts over the past several months: Beyonce’s 22 Days video, the return of The Biggest Loser, the cultural response to Brittany Runs A Marathon. We were really inspired by Lindsey’s perspective on this moment and what she found in herself when confronted with the judgment of a total stranger, and we LOVED talking with her about her relationship to running and her body, as well as her podcast, her audience, and her image.   We also talked skin care and self care and apologizing less and running out of fucks to give - aging is amazing, y’all. And, finally, we all squeal with excitement about Lindsey and MK both getting ready to run the NYC marathon together - it will be Lindsey’s first New York, and both MK and Sarah take a second to wax poetic about their favorite parts of the course.   And speaking of marathons, don’t miss the moment early on when Lindsey mentions (offhandedly) that she did no speedwork when she was training for Boston this year.    If you are going to be in New York City for marathon weekend, do NOT miss Lindsey’s live episode of I’ll Have Another with Roberta Groner, Sara Hall and Kellyn Taylor!!   (totally non-affiliate) Skincare Links from Coach MK: I purchased this face wash, used it twice and it did make my skin glow, but it also broke me out. I've always had acne-prone skin so I wrote it off as not being able to have nice things. I mean, I run every day and wear sunscreen; more is not worth the effort if I'm just gonna head outside again, right? Recovering from surgery with no tv, I searched for JVN on Youtube, and got this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJAZkC9d43c Then this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zBkWRjc4RY THEN THIS VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys1r-14fP1Q and I was like OH MY GOD a double cleanse whaaaaat? and I went to my bathroom and started reading labels then was like, "I NEED A WATER-BASED CLEANSER!" and ended up on www.klog.com and bought this cleanser and this toner and this toner (because I couldn't decide, figured I'd try and return the other one) and they were like WOW so I kept both....within a week I had zero acne. The oil-based face wash is magic if you use it the way it was intended- by following it with a water-based cleanser. How I went from a double cleanse to a whole morning AND NIGHTTIME routine that consists of completely different products will be the subject of a future podcast!!!!!

"I’m not one to usually show too much emotion crossing a finish line, but that last 100 to 200 meters, I thought about my children, my family, and all the hard work I did to put into this race that I had a lot of people doubt or question. It was just this moment of, 'This is why I do what I do.'" Roberta Groner just returned from Qatar, where she was one of three women representing the United States at the marathon world championships. But Roberta isn't a full-time professional athlete: She's a full-time nurse, a 41-year-old single mom of three, and a 2:29 marathoner. (She's one of only three U.S. women over 40 to have broken 2:30 in the marathon.) Roberta's story is pretty remarkable and wildly impressive. On this episode, she recounts her race in Doha — it was 90 degrees and 73 percent humidity, and the race started at midnight — where she finished sixth overall and was the first American finisher. She talks about why she chose to go to world championships when she was very aware of the grueling conditions that awaited her, and she talks about how she's gotten faster and stronger over the years. Roberta isn't slowing down on the roads or in life: She'll race the TCS New York City Marathon in just a few weeks, and then she'll compete at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta in February 2020. The Two Fit Crazies were so moved by the performance of American distance runner, friend and past guest of the show, Roberta Groner at the 2019 IAAF World Championships Women’s Marathon that they got together for a Pop-Up podcast to praise her in all her greatness. Very few people can keep up with Roberta Groner. This past April, she ran 2:29:06 at the NN Marathon Rotterdam, and in September, she’ll be one of three women on the United States marathon team at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha. Roberta will also be among the elite field at the TCS New York City Marathon on November 3, 2019, and in February of 2020, she’ll toe the line at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, GA.-Most of us will never know what it’s like to train and compete at such a high level. This episode is a glimpse into the mindset of an athlete who continues to prove that when talent meets drive there are no limits.-Roberta Groner ran track in high school and college, but her heart wasn’t in it. After graduating, she put running aside, only to return to it more than a decade later as a way to find solace in a busy life. Talent doesn’t go away, and it very quickly became apparent that Roberta is an exceptionally talented runner. Something was different this time around, though, and it wasn’t her training pace. Instead, she found the passion, love, and appreciation for the sport that had been missing in college, and those qualities are fueling her on a journey that is captivating the running community. Her performances exemplify the perfect alchemy of preparedness, focus, determination, confidence, gratitude, curiosity, flexibility, and…chill. This episode is about seizing opportunity, experiencing the joy of running, and feeling gratitude for the journey.

Two Fit Crazies & A Microphone Podcast Episode 96 – Roberta Groner – World Class Runner – Full Time Nurse – Mother of 3 In Episode 96 the Fit Crazies have the honor of rapping with the ridiculously fast and remarkably humble Super Mom, Roberta Groner, age 41, of Randolph, NJ. Literally, just 2 hours off the plane home, Roberta gives us the low down on her phenomenal, news making 2:29:06, 5th place performance against a world class field at the Rotterdam Marathon. To put it simply, Roberta has a story for the ages. After competitive high school and, albeit shortened, collegiate careers, running went away. Roberta spent the next decade building her career in nursing and starting a family. But a flame was rekindled after joining some office cohorts and running the Pittsburg Half Marathon just 10 years ago. This led to a marathon in Chicago and an impressive 3-hour 12-minute (3:12) debut. But she was just getting started, a Sub 3 hour run in her second marathon was followed by races in the 2:40’s and then a true burst onto the scene with her 2:37 victory at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in 2016. Just Flying!!!! All of this, along with a 2:30:38, 3rd place finish at the California International Marathon in 2017 has stamped Roberta’s place among the nation’s and world’s elites. In fact, we’d bet that if the 41-year-old, full time nurse, divorced mother of three had rubbed a lamp and was granted running wishes, Roberta probably would have sold herself short in what she wished for. What’s it like to run a 2:29 and an IAAF/Olympic Standard? At 41 years of age, while still working full time and a divorced mother of three, how does she fit it all in? What are the differences in training blocks as she continues to grow as a runner? What is it like working with a new coach in Steve Magness? Do her boys know how cool their mom is? What are her nutrition and recovery routines like? What is her advice for and/or secret to success? And most importantly; What’s Next???? Whatever your role in athletics or fitness or life, Roberta’s story is not to be missed! Get Your Inspiration Here, In Episode 96! Let’s Roll!
