THE COACH ED EYESTONE SPECIAL Today on the podcast is Ed Eyestone, not only one of the best distance coaches in the history of collegiate and professional running, but also a well-rounded person who loves theater and reading and has evolved a ton through his years of miles. Ed is a BYU athlete and coaching legend. Even though he was cut from his high school baseball team, he won a state XC championship at Bonneville High.  Ed holds PRs of 13:32 in the 5k, 27:41 in the 10k (then a 10k record!), and a speedy 2:10:59 in the marathon. Ed has a plethora of accolades as an individual, which include being an 8-time member of the U.S Cross Country National Team; a 5-time US Road Runner of the Year as a Professional Runner. Ed is one of four men to claim the collegiate triple crown: winning the Cross Country, 5k and 10k titles. Ed Attended BYU as a student and received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Minor in Spanish. He then went on to acquire a Master's Degree in exercise Science. Ed went on to have a decorated running career after he graduated; he competed in the Olympic Marathon in 1988 in Seoul, Korea (29th place, 2:19:09), and then in the Olympic Marathon 1992 in Barcelona, Spain (13th place, 2:15:23). Ed is a very multifaceted individual. He served as a writer for Runner's World and a TV Commentator on ESPN after he stopped running competitively at 39. (He was a Reebok-sponsored runner for a few years. Ed also has a passion for theater and reading. As a coach, Ed returned to BYU in 2000 as an Assistant Coach and then took over as Head Track Coach in 2013. Prior tocoming back, he coached at Weber State University. There is a laundry list of accolades to list as far as his BYU coaching career goes.  To name a few: he was named "Coach of the Year" for NCAA D1 for Cross Country twice (2019, 2024); he is a BYU Hall of Fame inductee; he was named head coach of Team USA at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships; and won cross country NCAA Division 1 titles in 2019 and most recently in December of 2024. There are many more achievements, but suffice it to say he has had success wherever he has gone as a coach. In terms of Olympic athletes, Coach Eyestone has overseen James Corrigan and Kenneth Rooks in the steeplechase, as well as Conner Mantz and Clayton Young during the 2024 Paris Olympics marathon.  He has also coached Jared Ward and Casey Clinger. In today's conversation we go in depth into Coach Eyestone's career,  Tap into the Coach Eyestone Special.   If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.  If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!  S H O W N O T E S -Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run  -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ -My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en

Ed Eyestone has been close to the center of USA distance running for nearly 4 decades, and never more than now. He's coach to American Olympic marathoners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, and also the guiding hand behind undergraduate steeplechaser James Corrigan's improbable--no, impossible--road to Paris. Eyestone himself ran in two Olympic Marathons with a best finish of 13th in the Barcelona 1992 Games. In 2016, he coached Jared Ward to his 6th place marathon finish in the Rio Olympics. And he does all this while holding down a fulltime cross-country and track coaching job at Brigham Young University, his alma mater and that of Ward, Young, and Mantz.I In this deep and revealing interview, Eyestone talks about: # how to have 6 daughters # how much faster than 2:10:59 (his personal best from 1990), he could run today with super shoes, super drinks, super cooling methods, etc. # how Corrigan improved this year from 8:52 to 8:13 # where he was, and how he reacted to the U.S. Marathon Trials last Feb. when Mantz and Young placed first and second # how the twosome is training right now, with a month to go before the Olympic Marathon # his philosophy of marathon training # why C(squared) = E(squared) is an excellent way to look at your training/racing development. # and much more.

In this podcast, Amby and George talk with Jared Ward, who explains the reasons behind the success of so many great marathon runners from Brigham Young University. Ward is a 2:09:25 marathon runner himself, and sixth place finisher in the 2016 Rio Olympic Marathon. Ward was at the finish line of the recent U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials to congratulate his friends and training partners, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, on their 1-2 finish in the Trials.  Ward had just received a treatment of PRP for an ailing hamstring injury that kept him from running the Trials. But he couldn't have been happier or more effusive about his two training partners. "They'll never let you down," he said.  He also described how Coach Ed Eyestone's steady hand has produced a growing number of top runners at BYU and after graduation. In a world of increasing specialization and digitization, Eyestone refuses to get lost in the weeds. He tells his runners: "Get as fit as you can, and everything else will take care of itself." Ward explains why he's not bitter about finishing behind runners wearing super shoes in the Rio Olympics, when he didn't even know that super shoes existed. (Neither did anyone else except for a handful of Nike runners.) He also discusses the BYU approach to caffeine for endurance performance, the benefits of training at 5000 feet and taking one day off per week, and how much carbohydrate marathon runners can consume during their 26.2 mile efforts. Before speaking with Ward, George and Amby briefly discussed recent news, including: Sensational running at the Millrose Games and other indoor meets, a new U.S. high school record in the 2-mile, and the deaths of Kenyan running legends Kelvin Kiptum and Henry Rono. You can learn more about Jared Ward by following his Instagram posts. “After Berlin, I came home thinking I have a chance to make this team. I'm a stats guy, I'm a realist, it's not this astronomically high chance — but I have a chance again… I have some of the best training partners in the nation and I have the pieces I think that I need now. So it's a fun opportunity.” My guest for today's episode is 2016 U.S. Olympian Jared Ward, who just ran 2:11:44 at the Berlin Marathon. It's been a while since Jared joined us on the show but he's back to recap that race and how he somehow ended up in a tight battle with Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa, who ended up breaking the women's world record in 2:11:53. He also shares some of his thoughts on training partners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young's big performances in Chicago. Plus, Ward gives us an update regarding some discussion about the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.  Last week, several of the top U.S. marathoners met with USATF CEO Max Siegel and other members of USATF's team to discuss the noon start time for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando. A letter was sent to the national office on Sept. 15 and was signed by 84 athletes. Jared was among the athletes spearheading the conversation to voice concern over the midday heat in Orlando. For himself, he enjoys watching MMA, running marathons, and getting outside to hike.Jared has spent a lot of time in the eCommerce world, serving numerous different roles. "Fail" Forward Friday is back and we are brining you stories from two amazing people - Jared Ward and Maddie Alm. First up is Jared Ward. Jared is an Olympian, USATF running circuit champion, NCAA All-American, and one of the best and most consistent American runners of this generation. But don't let all of that fool you. Jared's story of "failure" will resonated with runners of any ability. In the second part of the show we hear from Maddie Alm. Maddie is a pro runner who trains with Team Boss and she is having a wonderful 2021. She made the final of the women's 5k at the Olympic Trials, ran a 15:19 in the 5k at the Track Meet in May, and finished 14th in a stacked field at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in September. Like Jared, Maddie recalls moments in her college experience that set her on the path to get to where she is today. *Yes, you read that correctly - the "Fail" in quotes.* For so many of us there have been times in our lives when we thought we had failed, or worse, that we were failures. Those moments can leave of questioning everything that came before and whether or not we should continue down our chosen path. Then, if we persist we may realize that with time those setbacks can be a gift. Rather than holding us down those "failures" prove to be a catalyst for growth. Not merely to a level which we have already reached, but one that exceeds everything that came before. In this episode of Kicksology, host Brian Metzler is joined by Olympic marathoner and Saucony pro Jared Ward, and Dr. Iain Hunter, a biomechanics and exercise science professor at Brigham Young University. They talk all about the rise of super shoes — marathon racers with curvy carbon fiber plates embedded in the midsole that have been proven to reduce metabolic cost by 4 to 6 percent — and the implications to the sport and the runner. Questions they discuss include: Do we run differently in those shoes? How have those shoes changed competitive running? How have those shoes changed how runners race and train? What other benefits do those shoes offer? Metzler is the author of the book, "Kicksology: The Hype, Science, Culture and Cool of Running Shoes" and a long-time runner who has competed in races on the track, roads and trails from 50 meters to 100 miles. In each episode of Kicksology, Metzler engages shoe designers, entrepreneurs, shoe company executives, retailers, athletes and physical therapists to talk about the evolution of running shoes, new shoe launches, breakthrough technologies, the biomechanics of running and everything else running-shoe related.

Running is a tough thing to do. All throughout my sports journey I have ALWAYS hated running. People always asked me how I could play basketball or box (both sports require an immense amount of running) and I just never knew why I enjoyed them, maybe because the "running was different."  I have such a respect for those who actually ENJOY running! Jared Ward is one of them! He began running at a very young age and it carried him through Middle School, High School and even College where he ran at BYU.  He did research and presented his Thesis for his Masters on Marathon Pacing. He even took his running to the next level. Want to know how professional long distance running works? How do these guys get paid? How do they train? How do they qualify for the olympics? How did he take 6th in the Olympics in Rio? (You don't want to miss his story)  All of these questions are answered today with Jared breaking it down for us. This is such an educational episode! So pay attention as we break it all down for you today on the show.  Few things to remember:  Audible Free Trial: audibletrial.com/thegametimeguru  One Funnel Away Challenge: http://bit.ly/ShaneOFA Download the Podcoin App NOW to get paid to listen to my show!
