“We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K. Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. So in this episode, we'll hear about his approach to injury recovery, his plans for that debut, all with the guidance of his coach Dathan Ritzenhein and the support of his training partner and Olympic medalist, Hellen Obiri. He also shares why he's hoping for one more team on the track. Many thanks to New York Road Runners for allowing us to host this conversation in front of an audience at the Citizens Bank stage at the TCS New York City Marathon Expo. We are posting this early because we know you need some fun and feisty content for your weekend long runs. This one is all about Chicago, and Kara promises that it could be a rampage discussing the new world record set by Ruth Chepngetich. Is it or is it not? You be the judge, but we can promise the discussion will be different than you think. This episode represents precisely why Des and Kara started this podcast in the first place. Nobody asked them, and nobody talks about these topics the way they do. Also, HUGE shout-outs to Brooks athletes CJ Albertson and Susanna Sullivan for finishing as 1st Americans. They both made the live podcast in Chicago, and then crushed it 36 hours later. Coincidence? We think not! Come for the hot takes on Chicago and stay through the Olipop Top 5 at the end! Wow, there were a lot of emotions and opinions coming out of last week's episode, and we appreciated them all, mostly. Some of the internet haters get a little too excited, but we know that comes with the territory. Well, today... we get to take a deep breath and enjoy this new episode. No controversies to be seen in this one *wink wink*. Des and Kara start with extended life update. Des updates us on her prep for NYC, and Kara shares her painful experience get PRP in her hip. They talk baseball (go Tigers and Padres!), upcoming travels, Netflix's The Perfect Couple, and Kara's upcoming induction into the Croatian American Sports Hall of Fame. Then, they turn to the Camille Herron and Wikipedia controversy that somewhat-surprisingly involved Des's 50K record. You hear Des's side of the story and takes from both Des and Kara on the sadness of it all. They also answer the question "should Lululemon have dropped her sponsorship?" Plus, Kara shares some crazy stories that might inspire someone to be a little nicer on the internet. Finally, the episode ends with some notes on the Chicago Marathon fields and reactions to Athlos, the new track meet just for women, before a brain-fog-ending top 5 brought to you by Ketone-IQ. Of course, we couldn't do the show without our amazing sponsors. Supporting them is a way to support the podcast: Thank you to today's top 5 sponsor - Ketone-IQ. This episode features a reluctant guest to talk about the recent changes to the Boston qualifying standards announced by the BAA last week. Yes, Kara dragged me (your editor who is also a running coach) kicking and screaming into this one! We start with some life updates from Kara and Des. Kara shares that she and Adam recently celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary in Estes Park with a nothing but "Netflix and chill." TMI perhaps? We aren't sure she knows the full meaning of that vernacular, but you do get some Netflix recommendations from her! Des shares her experience running a a workout at the DC Half, hosted by Pacers Running, where she may or may not have annoyed her fellow racers. They also talk about the opening of the magical box from Brooks Running and what was revealed inside. You must listen to get the full intel there. Then, the podcast takes a sad turn discussing the tragic murder of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei. Violence against women has no place in this world, and we encourage you to research and support organizations that are on the ground doing something about it. Check out the Nala Track Club and Tirop's Angels to do just that. Finally, Chris and Kara nearly come to blows talking at the BQ standards and process, while Des mostly stays out of the fray adding helpful suggestions here and there. You may want to cancel us both after this discussion. We are certain there will be strong opinions on both sides so let us know what you think. We are at least united in our desire for Boston to continue to be a special place to aspire to race. We finish with a Super 5 turned Super 6 with our top 6 things from the week including the massive support of the Nobody Asked Us merch. This episode is a sneaky one. It seems like everything is business as usual… and then suddenly… BOOM… fireworks! Don't worry though, everyone still has all their fingers. Listen carefully though because there are fun revelations sprinkled throughout. At the start, Kara gives us a Colt and house update, where she reveals the one item that she is likely to hoard. Des answers with her tendency to hoard books and… NEW MERCH! Nobody asked me, but I think you may want to hoard it as well. They then dig into a host of current event updates including the Mondo v Karsten match race, the Zurich Diamond League + Olympic 1500m rematch, the controversy over Brussels, and the Paralympics. Plus, Kara shares some gossip about the new Grand Slam of Track and gives a “hot take” about how elite marathoners might have to start choosing their fall races differently. We also welcome TCS back to the podcast as a sponsor as we build up to the TCS NYC Marathon. Thank you to TCS for everything they do for the podcast, for the sport, and especially with their high-tech marathon apps! Finally, we finish with an Olipop Top 5 which is quite the Rush. This week we're joined by Jay Scott, co-executive director of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit he and his wife started in 2005 with a mission to change the lives of children with cancer. Their daughter, Alex Scott, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a terminal form of childhood cancer, just before her first birthday. When she was four, she set up a lemonade stand to raise money to help doctors find a cure for childhood cancer. In 2004, when Alex passed away at the age of eight, her stand and the inspiration from it had raised more than $1,000,000 toward finding a cure. Jay talks to us about what keeps him motivated to run marathons and raise money as part of Team Lemon. She is a sub-3 hour marathoner and her first marathon was the TCS NYC Marathon in 2014 where she unexpectedly qualified for Boston. On today's episode of The CLS Experience we have a very special and emotional treat. I pull back the curtain on what it takes and feels like to run 26.2 miles and how to overcome our opponent, the negative self talk and the physical pain in real time. We set a new personal best at the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon, but it wasn't without a ton of challenges and hitting the wall at an earlier than expected mile 9. We also talk about how to cultivate big meaningful relationships and the art of networking. Just a vulnerable and fun short mini episode with some real life stuff and how to level up your network for 2024. Lean in. Chris and Christian sit down to recap the absolutely incredible experience of the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon! Chris crushed the course without incident this year and Christian actually PR'd with plantar fasciitis! The 2023 NYC Marathon was a day...beautiful weather and beautiful people. Over a million spectators spreading love to 50,000 runners. The human spirit was on full display. Join us for the recap! But most importantly, don't forget to always get out there and run as you are baby!
Just a few hours after the conclusion of the elite races, Des and Kara jumped on the mics to recap all of the action at the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday. To call this episode "pure fire" would be a gross understatement AND STILL perhaps the best possible teaser words for it. They spend the most time on the women's race, one that Kara calls "the best race of the year," breaking down the cat-and-mouse games that extended well into the race. This includes their perspectives on the strategies of Kellyn Taylor and Molly Huddle to take the lead at various points, knowing full well that Obiri and Gidey were going to stay patient until a final, blazing-fast push to the finish. As a bonus, you get some early predictions for the women's marathon in Paris. Then, they cover the men's race too, but not before hearing about Des's death-defying trip to the marathon start line in Staten Island, where she and counterpart-on-the-lead-motos Galen Rupp, were the very last to cross the bridge before it closed. Des was in rare form on this episode - fresh off the marathon broadcast, still jet-lagged from Japan, hopped-up on champagne, beer, and coffee, and oh so ready to stoke any available fire. Kara just can't seem to contain her... or walk away. You have to stay all the way to the end for the biggest conflagration (and genuinely not a bad sponsorship idea for the US Marathon Trials). Enjoy!
In today's episode, the final finisher of the 2023 TCS Marathon, Francine Silver, shares advice on how to keep going when you want to quit. Francine Silver, 50, of Rahway, NJ, took more than 12 hours to finish the 26.2-mile course. Her husband, Michael, joined her unexpectedly before they got lost at Mile 11...What an adventure! We caught up with her on a bench across from Tavern on the Green at the West 67th Street entrance to Central Park. What a fun interview! In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Rob Simmelkjaer, the CEO of the New York Road Runners, who of course are organizers of this coming weekend's TCS New York City Marathon. It's arguably the biggest, most globally recognized marathon in the world, and hence a hugely important event on the running calendar every year. Rob tells us how to pronounce his last name--it's much easier than it looks--and explains what it has been like to take the helm at NY Road Runners. He has held the top position only since last January, so this is his first Marathon overseeing the entire event. Rob has had a long, wide-ranging careeer in other sports at ESPN and NBC, and explains what made him want to consider his new position in running. He also discusses frankly an area where he thinks those in the running world could do a better job: Telling stories and creating interest in the sport's fastest runners and biggest heroes. After speaking with Rob, who is 51, Amby notes that he was impressed with Rob's recent Staten Island Half Marathon finish in 1:39. That indicates he's in as good shape as he was a decade ago when he finished the TCS NYC Marathon in 3:28. George was struck by what Rob said was his favorite part of the new job: Waiting at the finish to greet back of the pack runners and congratulate them on a job well done.

If you tune in to last weeks episode.. you know this last weekend I completed the TCS NYC Marathon. I'm familiar with the distance. I know the discomfort that's coming, yet every single race I am pushed to a next level version of myself. People always say ‘the person who toes the start line isn't the same person who crosses the finish line' and even if you aren't a runner I know this episode is going to be relatable for YOU. Because the ‘race' that we try to incorporate in to our day to day human lives has so many parallels. You are in a hurry to get ‘there'When things get uncomfortable you pull back When life feels hard you put your struggles on a pedestal saying "I'm just so unlucky" or "there is no way anybody else feels this way"This episode is equal parts an ‘I love you AND' type of episode but also me pulling back the curtains on some of my biggest growth moments that happened in the TCS NYC Marathon!Join my text list **Connect with me on IG **Slate **

In this episode, and to honor mental health awareness month, I share the top five strategies I've employed to keep myself mentally tough before running my first Marathon, the 2015 TCS NYC Marathon.I explain how each of these five ways has grown with me as a person and as a runner. Five ways to build mental toughness: Visualize your most significant goal and create a roadmap of the steps needed to get you there. Create mantras for yourself to write down, post on your wall, and say aloud during your runs!Distract yourself by focusing on one thing at a time—every run.Clear your mind, whether that's through meditation or journaling! Whatever works for you!Get yourself excited to finish your run! Whether that's a giant piece of cheesecake waiting for you afterward, or a fun dinner with friends, write these things down the night before your runs so you do them and stay consistent.I discuss how having a growth mindset is an essential first step for being able to master your mental toughness and strategy while hitting the road running during a training run or a race! All the small things you do daily and consistently make the more important goal possible. To change your mindset, you need to make yourself a priority and work on developing methods that will help you to change your attitude. My suggestion? Start with your larger goal, and then work backward. Hopefully, the strategies discussed in today's episode will give you some inspiration to motivate yourself to change the way you think about running and your ability to do it. YOU CAN! Friendly Reminders:Focus on the present and what you have right now. Surround yourself with AMAZING energy and people. Identify opportunities to grow.Practice gratitude daily. Learning the hard way made me mentally disciplined in a different way. Because of this experience, I can help you figure out a mental strategy to nail your A race and be on your A-game!If you enjoyed this episode and want to hear more about mindset and mental toughness for runners, please share your thoughts in the comments under the show notes.
"400 meters to go". "200 meters to go". La Finish Line più famosa del mondo aspetta migliaia di finisher nel cuore della città più bella del mondo. Steve Jobs diceva “The journey is the reward” (“Il viaggio è la ricompensa”).
