Top American distance pro runner Molly Huddle tells the story around her 2023 NYC Marathon, her first time racing this distance since having her first child, Josephine, in April 2022. WRS featured Huddle in March of this year, 2023, to tell the story of her postpartum return to racing and how it all went down at the 2023 NYC Half Marathon. Immediately after that, Huddle was diagnosed with a serious injury. In this episode, Huddle catches us up on her injury recovery, why she decided to run the NYC Marathon on November 5, as well as how the marathon unfolded, and her plans going forward. Huddle also shares what she's been doing for the running community outside of racing, including raising money for &mother in conjunction with running NYC and helping to further the conversation around being a career athlete and becoming a mom. Molly Huddle is already a legend in the running world, and her racing story continues to develop. She's a two-time Olympian, multi-time national champion, and former American record holder in the 5000m and 10,000m. In addition, she is a strong voice in the women's running space, as a writer, podcaster, and activist: she's published many articles, co-wrote the book How She Did It: Stories, Advice, and Secrets to Success from Fifty Legendary Distance Runners, and is the co-host of the women's sports podcast Keeping Track. Huddle has been very deliberate about sharing her pregnancy and postpartum journey as a professional runner as a way of moving the sport forward and advocating for more support of professional running moms and moms to be. Add to all that, Huddle shares fascinating details about running and racing at the professional level of the sport. Her insights are really cool. Just a few hours after the conclusion of the elite races, Des and Kara jumped on the mics to recap all of the action at the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday. To call this episode "pure fire" would be a gross understatement AND STILL perhaps the best possible teaser words for it. They spend the most time on the women's race, one that Kara calls "the best race of the year," breaking down the cat-and-mouse games that extended well into the race. This includes their perspectives on the strategies of Kellyn Taylor and Molly Huddle to take the lead at various points, knowing full well that Obiri and Gidey were going to stay patient until a final, blazing-fast push to the finish. As a bonus, you get some early predictions for the women's marathon in Paris. Then, they cover the men's race too, but not before hearing about Des's death-defying trip to the marathon start line in Staten Island, where she and counterpart-on-the-lead-motos Galen Rupp, were the very last to cross the bridge before it closed. Des was in rare form on this episode - fresh off the marathon broadcast, still jet-lagged from Japan, hopped-up on champagne, beer, and coffee, and oh so ready to stoke any available fire. Kara just can't seem to contain her... or walk away. You have to stay all the way to the end for the biggest conflagration (and genuinely not a bad sponsorship idea for the US Marathon Trials). Enjoy!

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with Olympian and one of America's top distance runners ever Molly Huddle. Molly is also a new mom to daughter Jojo and passionate advocate of women's sports. Having competed consistently at the elite level for over 20 years, Molly's career is one of longevity and sustained success: we begin this episode talking all about longevity in sports, debunking myths about aging and postpartum performance. Molly and I talk about nutrition and injury prevention strategies for sustained success, and Molly shares some of the nutrition lessons she's learned along the way. We discuss the topics of “race weight” and body standards in sports, reminding listeners that your “ideal body” is the result of optimal fueling, training, and recovery: performance is not determined by how you look. We talk about “How She Did It”, the incredible book Molly wrote with fellow professional runner Sara Slattery, guest on Female Athlete Podcast episode 107: Strategies for Sustained Success + Peak Performance from a National Champion. Molly speaks to the power of role models demonstrating longevity in professional athletics, and we highly recommend you check out the book yourself! In this episode, Molly shares how it all went down at the New York City Marathon, her second elite-level race since having her daughter in April 2022. Molly was also a spokesperson for the event, with a focus on her as a new mom, as well as a 3-time back to back to back champion at this race, 2015-2017. Molly has been very deliberate about sharing her pregnancy and post-partum journey as a professional runner as a way of moving the sport forward and advocating for more support of professional running moms and moms to be. This episode covers not only Molly's racing life leading up to and in the race, but also her larger role in the event, sharing her experience navigating professional running and motherhood. As she's said, when you're a professional runner, "your body is your business," so planning to have a baby is something you give a lot of thought to. Sara Slattery joins the show and we talk about her running/coaching journey along with some of her fondest running memories, her book that she co-authored with Molly Huddle named 'How She Did It', and how she feels about the state of American women's distance running!
Sara Slattery won national and international titles in cross country and indoor track while in high school and college, before going on to become a top-ranked professional runner. She applied what she learned as a student athlete to her career as a college coach, including how to navigate RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport), which she had suffered from herself. She and Molly Huddle have co-authored a book, “How She Did It: Stories, Advice, and Secrets to Success from Fifty Legendary Distance Runners.” They wrote it, she says, “because it was a book we would have loved to have when we were a high school athlete.” If you suffer from RED-S, or think that you may, we've created a free resource of over 50 videos that will be available on YouTube on February 6th. Experts in sports nutrition and performance answer questions submitted by real people, covering everything you may have wondered about Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. "I never think that in a race. I never think, 'I've got this.' For better or for worse, I don't ever feel like something's done until it's done." She's done it again! Earlier this month, Emily Sisson broke her own American record in the half marathon, running 1:06:52 at the Houston Half Marathon. She became the first U.S. woman to run under 67 minutes in the half marathon on a record-eligible course, and Emily now owns four out of six of the fastest half marathon times run by an American woman. (She is also the American record holder in the marathon!) In this conversation, Emily talks about the mental side of staying so strong during training and on race day. She shares how she avoids the comparison trap, and how she stays focused on what she can do vs. what her competition is capable of. Plus, what it was like racing alongside longtime training partner Molly Huddle, the secret to that finishing kick, and what the finish line media frenzy is really like. SPONSOR: New Balance. “It's hard to not compare yourself but so much has changed. It's not to say that you can't get back there – trying to take a different route may get you somewhere better. I'm focusing a lot more on the marathon going forward too. Before, I had bounced back and forth from the track to the road. I think that will maybe help us maybe maximize myself there. That's probably the one event I probably have a PR left in. Reinventing myself a little bit by focusing on that.” This is Molly Huddle's is her first time back on the CITIUS MAG Podcast since being guest No. 6 way back in March 2017. She recently made her postpartum return to high-level competitive racing and just finished an impressive fifth place at the Houston Half Marathon in 1:10:01 – almost nine months after welcoming her daughter. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with former professional runner and NCAA D1 head coach, author and mom of two, Sara Slattery. This is a wide ranging conversation about cultivating lifelong athletes and the importance of optimizing health for performance at all ages. We discuss youth sports specialization and collegiate athletics, sharing tips for athletes and parents on how to create healthy habits and environments, as well as the importance of avoiding pitfalls like underfueling and RED-S. Sara and I talk about her own running career, from a successful junior athlete to NCAA champion, succeeding as a professional athlete and her postpartum comeback, and the challenges she faced along the way. We discuss the incredible book Sara wrote with fellow professional runner Molly Huddle, “How She Did It”, and hear how we can all learn and benefit from the experiences of successful female athletes and experts. This week's guest is 2-time Olympian, many-time national champion, and 10,000m American record holder Molly Huddle. In addition to being a top-tier professional runner for Saucony, in recent years Molly has become a podcaster, writer, and leading advocate for women's sports, as well as becoming a mom earlier this year with the birth of her daughter. We had a fantastic conversation about the journey back to racing from childbirth, Molly's changing relationship with running and plans for her professional future, and her perspective on the relationship between track and field and social media. Molly is a wealth of wisdom when it comes to training, racing, and growing the sport, and we appreciated the chance to pick her brain about everything from her training partner Emily Sisson's American record performance in the marathon, to her tips for the upcoming NYC marathon, to her feelings on racing for fast times versus chasing the win. Molly is planning on running the BAA Half Marathon this month and the Houston Half in January as she returns to fitness and prepares for the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials Apologies in advance for some sub-par audio quality during the episode – we had some equipment challenges on our end, but we didn't want to deprive the listeners of this awesome conversation. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us and all the other CITIUS MAG shows wherever you get your podcasts. On returning to running from childbirth: “My plan was to race into shape because I actually thought it would be less pressure than to wait and not know where I'd be in relation to my old performances. I'd rather just show where I'm at as I'm progressing, and I love racing.” “After giving birth, your body globally is not able to careen back into shape like I used to [following injury]. Your body's doing something else at the same time and it's slower; it's different.” On her plans through 2024: “I look at this as a fun time in my career. You can take risks and do what you want with races. Whatever I enjoy the most, that's what I'm going to put my focus on. I do think I can still PR in the marathon and there's motivation there to do something I haven't done before.” On working with coach Ray Treacy: “When someone knows you so well as an athlete, there isn't a coach who can do it better. If you can be with a coach long enough for them to always know what's best for you as an athlete, that's really special.” On marathon race strategy: “The governor is always how you're feeling on the inside, and until you hit that limit, you can race within that range. Women's elite fields can be thinner and you can find yourself between packs a lot. It feels less like a race and more like a really long, hard workout.”
This week, we discussed our takes on this quarter's Book of the Quarter, How She Did It by Molly Huddle and Sara Slattery. It was interesting and important, and we believe that there's something for everyone in it. We also talked about Michelle's recent trip to West Virginia and Erik's final prep for the Delirium 24 next weekend, as well as the Backyard Ultra World Championship, Tim Tollefson's new video about body image, and Danielle Friedman's recent piece in the New York Times. Finally, we announce our next BOTQ!

On this special bonus episode of More Than Running, I chat with 5x World Championship qualifier Molly Huddle about everything she is excited about for Eugene 22. We primarily cover women's distance events with a heavy bias toward the hometown, our team, Team USA! Molly competed in the World Championships in 2011 Daegu 5k, 2013 Moscow 5k, 2015 Beijing 10k, 2017 London 10k, and 2019 Doha 10k. Molly's decade of dominance was briefly paused due to the birth of her first child Josephine this past April. Molly in her words is a "track nerd" and has been enjoying this season off the track by being a fan and providing insider knowledge on social media. In addition to new motherhood, Molly also launched a book this year How She Did It with Sara Slattery about 50 inspirational women in running, many of who are competing at the World Championships. Molly is also the host of the Keeping Track podcast and is an advocate for all things parity and equality in women's sports. I am already calling myself out about the goof of missing the women's steeplechase smh. However, we are in good hands with Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs, and Courtney Wayment. Molly and I needed another hour to record! Molly and Sara are both themselves accomplished competitive runners and their book takes a look into some of the careers of female runners who paved the way! During the interview, these women emphasize that it is possible to train in healthy ways throughout the lifespan of a female athlete, though each period of life may bring up different challenges. They describe how using stories from other successful athletes engaging in healthy practices can encourage a healthy relationship with running and is especially important for young girls beginning running to have positive role models and example behaviors. Some of the other issues they bring up include negotiating running and fueling appropriately as a female runner going through puberty and important factors to consider when running during and after pregnancy. These women explain how a running career is best viewed as an investment process and taking the time to build up training in healthy ways while supporting overall health leads to the most success and best health outcomes. You will hear how they have negotiated different points in their running careers, Sara's experience as a collegiate coach for both male and female runners at Grand Canyon University, negotiating recovery from injuries, and more. They discuss some of the most rewarding aspects of running including the friendships and comradery they have both experienced with each other and in the running community. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet. Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology. If you're ready to take control of your health and optimize your training, get 25% off any of their blood tests with code STRENGTHRUNNING at InsideTracker. Thank you Therabody! If you want sound recovery, a big part of that is circulation. One of the reasons why massage feels so good after a hard effort is because of circulation: it brings fresh, oxygenated blood to your legs. The RecoveryAir by Therabody does that without needing someone to give you a massage. Plus, you can do it on the couch while you watch Netflix. What I love about the RecoveryAir Jetboots is that the pressure travels from your feet up to your heart and this graduated approach is more effective. The compression goes beyond your normal blood pressure while also monitoring it to prevent over-constriction. My personal preference is to use the boots the day after a hard day so I'm not giving my legs more than they can handle. Sit back, relax and recover. It includes advice from experts, plus stories, interviews, and profiles from 50 legendary women in the sport (many of whom you know, love, and have heard right here on the Ali on the Run Show). Plus, they talk about their friendship, Sara talks about being the head men's and women's cross-country coach at Grand Canyon University (she coaches one of Sara and Ryan Hall's daughters!), and Molly offers a pregnancy update (she's due at the end of April!). Today I speak to a running legend, a legend who's still running at the top level of the sport - Molly Huddle. I've been a fan and follower of Molly's forever. I've been so impressed by how she has evolved her career so she can continue to do what she loves and improve while most athletes fade away from injury or the simple aggregation of so many miles over so many years. Molly is a 2-time Olympian. She ran the 5,000 in 2012 and the 10,000 in 2016. She's going for the 2020 Olympics (in 2021!) and currently training for the 10k. She has or has held 6 American records. She's been running competitively for around 20 years! Not only is a she a badass pro runner who created her own formula for success, she is using her platform to advocate for social causes she believes in. Not every athlete has the courage to do this! One of her keys to success is her ability to nurture strong relationships. I'm happy to share that today's episode is sponsored by one of her sponsors: Gatorade Endurance!
