Before we get to Boston, the elite American [half-]marathoning circuit kicks off this Sunday in Houston, Texas, where fast times historically abound thanks to pancake flat topography, mild Texas “winters,” and top-tier talent converging from all across the country and world. And while the rest of us were deep in winter hibernation, plenty of the sport's best and brightest spent their holiday season with one weekend in January circled on the calendar.  CITIUS MAG's been cooking up an exciting behind-the-scenes docuseries following Conner Mantz, Clayton Young, and Joe Klecker as they prepare for the Houston Half. [Check out the trailer here, and stay tuned for the first episode, which premieres later today… like, subscribe, etcetera!] Klecker has already gone on record stating that the American record—59:43, set by Ryan Hall back at this same race in 2007—is something he's been training toward in his debut at the distance. But perhaps the most likely American record performance may come from the very athlete who already holds the women's mark: Weini Kelati. At Houston last year—are you sensing a trend here?—Kelati ran 1:06:25 in her debut at the distance, kicking off a banner year highlighted by an eighth-place finish in the Olympic 10,000m. With her confidence buoyed and another full year of training under her belt, Kelati seems poised for a big day.  Chris Chavez chatted with Kelati's coach, Stephen Haas, to check in on what fans might expect come Sunday, and learn a bit more about Kelati's preparation with her Under Armour Mission Run Dark Sky Distance teammates in Flagstaff, Arizona. At every level, Emily has been ABSOLUTELY dominant.  In high school, Emily qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships all four years, a feat that has barely been replicated throughout history.  In college, at Providence College, Emily was a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in the 5000m at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in 2015. She also set a collegiate indoor record for the women's 5000m with a time of15:12.22 at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships.  Emily turned pro in 2015 with New Balance and continued to train under her college coach, Ray Tracey, and has all the way up to the present day.  As a pro, Emily has set multiple American Records, including the American Record in the Marathon, which stands to this day. It was set at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:18:29. Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February.  In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more. I absolutely loved this conversation and the opportunity to pick Emily's brain on so many topics. This one is packed with wisdom! This episode looks at Johnny Cash's “The American Recordings”, a series of 6 albums released on American Records between 1994 and 2010.  By 1994, when he signed to Rick Rubin's American Records, it looked like Cash's career was all but done. However, Rubin had other ideas and, over the next 10 years, worked with Cash to produce some of the most memorable work of his career. Part of this process involved Cash covering songs by some of the greatest artists of the late 20th Century - U2, Nine Inch Nails, Nick Cave, Tom Petty and Leonard Cohen.  He's not performing the songs in his usual country style, but simply as Johnny Cash.  It's a great story, with a fabulous playlist! Jeff's found 5 bands you would not believe exist, including Mac Sabbath, a parody of Black Sabbath with lyrics about fast food, and Shat, a band that is offensive in every possible way, whose lead singer's costumes are draped with dildoes!  Our "Album you must listen to before you die" is “Arrival” by Abba.  Reviewers weren't convinced.  Neither is Jeff.  Have a listen and see what Mick thought. References: Winny Puhh, The Residents, Mac Sabbath, Shat, TISM, Taylor Swift, Tortured Poets Department, Abba, Arrival, American Records, Rick Rubin, Def Jam, Shel Silverstein, “A Boy Named Sue”, “Solitary Man”, The Highwaymen, The Man in Black, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, June Carter Cash, “Bitter Tears”, “Ballad of Ira Hayes”, Bruce Springsteen, “Highway Patrolman”, U2, Zooropa, “The Wanderer”, “Personal Jesus”, “The Mercy Seat”,  “Streets of Laredo”, John Cale   Johnny Cash American Recordings – Full albums Johnny Cash – Our episode playlist Discogs' listing of all 6 covers Interview with Rick Rubin re “Hurt”  Ten Bands you Won't Believe Exist

“Personally, it's always been the mission… We're willing to be patient. But we're also very keen on what the mission is. It's not to stop at championships. It's not to stop at fast times. It's not to stop at American Records. It's not to get content. We are here to completely push the boundary every time. I'm very vocal about that...I've posted what my time goals are for the World Championships. I'm here to run 9.65 and I'm here to run 19.10. The crazy thing is it causes so much controversy. Why should my dream or belief cause controversy with you? It has nothing to do with you. If I don't get it, and if I do get it, how does it change your life? So many people want to have an opinion on it. And so many people want to tell me what I can and can't do. But you know what they can't tell me? What I ran in practice yesterday. And I bet that's the information you need to know if I'm going to actually run it or not.” Two-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Noah Lyles jins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to break down all of the biggest revelations in his new two-part documentary series with NBC Sports. Today on the podcast series "The Road To Hayward" is Irene Riggs and Sophia Kennedy, friends and future teammates at Stanford University this fall! Irene Riggs and the word "history" belong in the same sentence. Over the past year, Irene has made history in her home state of West Virginia and on the National Stage. Irene became the first athlete from West Virginia ever to win a national cross country title, and she did so in remarkable fashion, overcoming cold, windy conditions at NXN to produce the No. 2 all-time mark of 16:40.9 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Oregon. She also ran the second-fastest high school girls' 5K cross country race in history with her 16:02.1 effort at the Nike Southeast Regional. Irene also made her first U.S. National Team by winning the 2023 USATF U20 XC title. This track season, Irene ran 9:45.97 in the 3200m at the Spire Scholastic Showcase Meet, became the Nike Indoor National Champion in the Mile, winning in 4:38.23, and won the Arcadia Invitational 3200m in a meet record time of 9:52.66. Irene is also a fantastic selfless individual off the grass and track. She is the Vice President of the student body at her school, a student council representative at Morgantown, and has spent hours doing community service. Through these accomplishments, Irene became the 2022-2023 Gatordate National Girls Cross-Country Player of The Year. Sophia Kennedy has slowly cemented herself as one of the greatest runners in Indiana state history. Last fall, Sophia placed seventh at the Nike Cross Nationals, a week after taking second at the Champs Sports Midwest Region Championships. Sophia is a two-time qualifier for the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships, placing seventh in 2021. Sophia, the daughter of U.S. distance great Bob Kennedy, was fifth in the two-mile at the 2021 Brooks PR Invitational and eighth in 2022. Running for Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Sophia was second in the 3,200 at the 2022 Indiana state track finals and third in the state in cross country this fall. This indoor season, Sophia placed fourth in the Mile at Nike Indoor Nationals, running 4:45.60. She also ran an outdoor mile in 4:49 and a 3200 in 10:07, where she split 5:08 and 4:59. Others may know Sophia's dad, Bob Kennedy, a two-time Olympian who set American Records and won four NCAA titles while at Indiana University. In today's episode, we go through how they met each other, the decision to go to Stanford, exclusive insights and stories from NXN and NIN, how their outdoor season is going, how they're preparing for Nike Outdoor Nationals, and top things off with some listener questions! The podcast I've been wanting to make happen for months: The Woody Kincaid Special. Woody Kincaid is a passionate competitor who has accomplished many incredible things in his career. The first time I remember hearing Woody's name was on September 10, 2019, when he became the eighth man in American history to break 13 minutes in the 5k by clocking 12:58.10. Since that day on a brisk and rainy evening in Portland, Oregon, Woody has gone on to etch his name further into the history books. As his Instagram boi alludes, he has literally won the U.S. Trials 10k. He also made the U.S. World Championship team last year in the 5k. Woody ran a new American Record time of 12:51.61 in the 5k this past January, signaling to the world that he's not messing around in 2023. In the words of Woody from this conversation, "The job is never done." This conversation with Woody was wide-ranging and full of serious topics, such as the lessons he's learned from being in this sport to more comical subjects like putting too much pepper on a Banh Mi sandwich for Gordon Ramsay. We dive into his upbringing in the sport, the 12:58 race, and the special camp that led into it, winning the U.S. Olympic Trials, dealing with negativity and outside noise, what he thinks he can accomplish before he hangs up the spikes, and more. Woody is a very perspicacious speaker who is incredibly thoughtful about his responses. This trait made this conversation particularly fascinating and impactful. I'm confident you'll walk away from this conversation a better version of yourself and a bigger fan of Woody Kincaid. This week we will discuss Dysautonomia once again.  Our guest this week is Ella Eastin, a first-year medical student at Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate education at Stanford and was a member and captain of the Varsity Swim team, where she earned 12 National Championship titles and set 4 American Records. Following her graduation in 2019 with a B.S. in Human Biology, she competed professionally as a member of Team USA. However, her Olympic aspirations were cut short due to a COVID-19 infection which led to her developing Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Dysautonomia, resulting in her retirement from competitive swimming. To raise awareness for individuals affected by chronic illness and disability, she founded Dysunderstood, a community platform for patients to share their experiences. As a future healthcare provider, her goal is to bring attention to these debilitating conditions and provide unwavering care for patients facing lifelong health challenges.

Yared Nuguse. A name you've heard time and time again over the past few months as he's cemented his name into the history books. It all started in Boston, where Yared ran a new American Record in the 3k, clocking 7:28.24. He followed up that performance by running yet another American Record (and the second fastest time ever) with a 3:47.38 at the Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile. Lastly, Yared flew to Europe, where he won a 1500m against a world-class field. Needless to say, Yared is on fire, and I had to get him back on the podcast. Yared runs for the OAC (On Athletic's Club), is a graduate of The University of Notre Dame, where he won NCAA Championships and set an NCAA Record, and was an Olympian for the US in 2020. This conversation was insightful, impactful, hilarious, and a ton of fun. Yared documents his last seasons at Notre Dame and how he overcame setbacks and failure, signing with OAC, training with "heavy hitters," breaking two American Records this season, future goals for the rest of the year, sneaking his pet tortoise Tyro across the country, and who has the best dog on OAC (sorry, Gus.) Needless to say, through listening, you'll be inspired, motivated, and have many laughs along the way. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." In the early eighties Dick Beardsley was one of world's most famous athletes. He is an American distance runner best known for his first-place tie in the 1981 London Marathon and his close finish with Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon— frequently referred to as The Duel in the Sun, compellingly told in the book by John Brant--where he ran 2:08:53 breaking the Boston course and American Records. After retiring from competition, he suffered a near fatal farming accident, requiring a five-month post-surgical recovery. From 1992-1995, he sustained three major car and cycling accidents, requiring over twenty surgeries. After each of his operations, pain medications were prescribed—to which he became severely addicted. It was a privilege to spend a moment with this inspirational speaker, fishing guide, iconic athlete, and champion of addiction recovery. I caught up with this native Minnesota outdoorsman away from his “floating office,” aboard his 19-foot fishing boat with his Dick Beardsley Fishing Guide Service.  He and his wife Jill are co-owners of the Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast.  Dick is a motivational speaker sharing his experiences of redemption, perseverance, and hope; he has spoken at fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, conferences, sporting events, prisons, and drug treatment centers.I hope you enjoy Dick's boundless enthusiasm, gratitude, and approach to Staying the Course, the title of his page turning book with co-author Maureen Anderson—a master class in overcoming life's adversities. After last year and being at the Olympic Trials and finishing eighth, that was the moment. These girls were jumping. It's not like you weren't out there competing. This is something you can do. That American record can happen. All you need is your speed back. You're at a great facility. You can't deny your jumps coach. You can't deny your training group. You're learning from this amazing training group. Your coaches believe in you. Your family believes in you. There's no reason to not have set in stone to myself: You're the future American record holder. That's my goal. That's what I want to do.” Please give her a warm welcome as Jasmine Todd is joining the CITIUS MAG team to help bolster our coverage of the sprints and jumps in 2022. Jasmine is a world championship silver medalist from 2015 in the 4x100m relay. She also competed in the long jump at the 2019 world championships in Doha. Last year, she finished eighth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the women's long jump. She trains in California and has her sights set on making this year's world championship team in Eugene, Oregon. However, the road there isn't all that glamorous. In this episode, she also peels back the curtain of why she recently went public with a GoFundMe looking for assistance in funding her housing before she makes it Hayward. On the page, she says: “I know I can break the American Record in long jump. I know I can make this World Championship Team and I know I can Medal. I just need Proper resources again.” It's very candid and maybe you can consider supporting her on her journey whether it's as a backer or as a general fan. She'll have CITIUS MAG behind her in 2022. The Fightin' Side of Me". The Glorious Revolution occurred about three and a half years after James II ascended to the English throne. People had been concerned about how James might change the government, but not enough to do anything significant for several years. Why did it work out that way, how common is such a period (i.e. between a change and its resolution) and what might it tell us about our current political situation? ================ The Diary of John Evelyn includes some up-to-the-minute reactions to the events of 1688 (e.g. “10th June, 1688. A YOUNG PRINCE born, which will cause disputes.”) http://www.gutenberg.org/files/42081/42081-h/42081-h.htm There's also a bit in the diary about meeting with an 11-year-old prodigy. Asked if the recent revolution was comparable to anything he had heard of, he gives the example of Constantine the Great and Maxentius - a Roman emperor with a 6 year reign ending in 312.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxentius The diary also has the specific intended mention of  the bishops in England who thought the events  of the Revolution were what was foretold in the Revelation of St. John - see 26 April 1689 for details. Here's the paper that pointed me to John Evelyn and his observations at the time. https://www.jstor.org/stable/4091697 Revelation 13:5 King James Version (KJV) 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. "The History of England from the Accession of James II" came up in one of my searches. No guarantee of anything except that it may be of use  to anyone wanting another view of that period. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2439/2439-h/2439-h.htm 'The King explicitly avowed to the ministers of those continental powers with which he had lately intended to ally himself, that all his views had undergone a change, and that England was still to be, as she had been under his grandfather, his father, and his brother, of no account in Europe. "I am in no condition," he said to the Spanish Ambassador, "to trouble myself about what passes abroad. It is my resolution to let foreign affairs take their course, to establish my authority at home, and to do something for my religion.”' One of my older tweets on why this next month (July 2020) might be interesting: https://twitter.com/generationalize/status/1097257156712136706 Included for timeline, although I don't agree with the conclusion, since James II did not appear to be motivated by increased religious freedom. https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/07/glorious-revolution-conservatives-should-not-celebrate-religious-tyranny/  After recording, found that James II's queen was  Mary of Modena, which is probably rarely mentioned in narratives of the Revolution because having two different Marys in the story is ... confusing.  The outro is the end of Johnny Cash's The Man Comes Around, the title track from his fourth and final American Records recording. It's quoting from the 6th chapter of Revelation, which seems appropriate given all the rest. Yes, there's a very obvious edit about 10 minutes in, where I had to insert the word "three" to describe how many centuries since the Glorious Revolution. We regret the error. Jim Jones in conversation talking about his life in music with David Eastaugh Thee Hypnotics are an English psychedelic garage rock band, formed in 1985 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. The band are currently composed of frontman James "Jim" Jones, guitarist Ray Hanson, drummer Phil Smith and bassist Jeremy Cottingham. The band split in 1999, before announcing their reformation in January 2018. The band recorded three studio and one live album for record labels including Sub Pop, Beggars Banquet/Situation Two, RCA Records, American Records. They were part of the early alternative rock and psychedelic rock London scene, and made an impact on the underground and alternative music scenes in the UK, Europe and the United States. Co-founders Jones and Hanson were originally joined by drummer Mark Thompson and bassist Adam Sharam. Personnel changes ensued with others including drummer Chris Dennis (1987–88), bassist Will Pepper (1988–93 and 1994–95), Canadian drummer Phil Smith (1989–99) and bassist Jeremy Cottingham (1997–1999). They released their first 7" single "Love In a Different Vein" in 1987 on Vinyl Solution. Thee Hypnotics subsequently signed to Situation Two a subsidiary of the independent record label, Beggars Banquet. The band cemented this union by scoring an independent chart hit with the 12" single "Justice In Freedom" and the follow up "Soul Trader".[1] Their live album, Live'r Than God (1989), elevated the band out of the UK club scene,[1] and they toured supporting both Gaye Bykers on Acid and Crazyhead, as well as on their own UK tour. In September 1989, Melody Maker noted that "Thee Hypnotics care only for their own generic past and frenetic present. The future doesn't even get a look in... Forget regression, this is reincarnation! Past, present and future!"[3] Thee Hypnotics were asked to do a radio session for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel on 28 March 1989, and they recorded "Nine Times", "Love in a Different Vein", "Soul Trader" and "Let's Get Naked", and were previewed on MTV. Thee Hypnotics began to attract attention in the United States, in particular Seattle where its own alternative rock scene was taking off. Sub Pop made Thee Hypnotics their first UK signing. Sub Pop's release of Live'r Than God! became the band's US debut, and encompassed not only a Powerhaus concert recording but also their singles to date. Thee Hypnotics shared pages with Mudhoney, Screaming Trees and Nirvana in the Seattle publication, Backlash. Seattle became a second home for the band and, after Mark Thomson was replaced by the Canadian drummer Phil Smith, the band made its US tour debut. The Damned took the band out as their support act. The Lords of the New Church approached Thee Hypnotics lead singer, Jim Jones, to front the Lords but he declined. Subsequently, Stiv Batorswore a T-shirt with a 'singer wanted' advert and then sacked his band onstage.[6] In 1989, Ray Hanson and Jim Jones joined Stiv Bators onstage at The Opera On The Green, Shepherd's Bush, London, as temporary Dead Boys, after Cheetah Chrome failed to secure a work visa.

Sometimes, things are better the second time around. Such was the case in the circumstances that led up to the making of this episode. Multi-platinum, award-winning producer/engineer Toby Wright has worked on so many amazing landmark rock and metal albums that a cursory glance of his discography is staggering. For Chris & Aaron, Toby literally helped build the soundtrack of their lives. So, it was no surprise that upon learning about his move to Nashville in 2011 that he was added to the Decibel Geek interview wish list. We're very proud this week to present to you our in-depth and engaging conversation with Toby Wright that touches on many notable albums from throughout his career. What you are hearing today is take 2. The reason for this is explained the  opening of the show. After everything we went through to bring this episode to you, we think you'll agree that Toby Wright is truly a great sport when it comes to being interviewed. Jar of Flies, the acoustic-based 1994 EP from Alice in Chains, was a pivotal release for the "Grunge" era as it proved that there was more to this new genre from the Pacific Northwest than overdriven, sludgy guitars and doom & gloom vocals. Toby Wright's involvement in this album, as well as its creation, was a very organic thing. In this discussion you will hear Toby's memories of how all parties involved went from zero preparation to writing, producing, and mixing a full EP in just 10 days. Jar of Flies has since gone on to sell over 4 million copies and remains one of the most relevant releases of the early 1990's. While not all of our listeners prefer the mid to late 1990's genre loosely known as nu-metal, there's no denying its impact on the ever-shifting tides of what's popular in the musical world. Toby Wright was right in the middle of this, love-it-or-hate-it, groundbreaking new style with his work with bands like Sevendust (Home, 1999) and Korn on their massively successful 1998 release Follow the Leader. Wright remembers being aware of what he wanted to do with Korn's sound right away. "Personally, I thought that the sound was a little sloppy. I was looking to make it bigger and fatter." Raising Korn's production level with a thicker, deeper sound, Wright's work paid huge dividends and Follow the Leader caused Korn to explode in popularity as it has gone on to sell over 14 millions copies. Some projects that Toby Wright was involved in have had some controversy from fan circles over the years and in this long-form discussion, you will get his take on some long-running rumors and speculation. In 2005, Ozzy Osbourne's camp released the Prince of Darkness box set. This package was intended to be all-encompassing of Osbourne's career and included studio tracks, live tracks, b-sides, demos, duets, and cover songs. Toby Wright was brought in to produce the new material for the box set. In this discussion, Wright remembers back on Ozzy's displeasure over the speed at which the basic tracks were prepared and the encounter with Sharon Osbourne that led to his dismissal from the project. Slayer's 1994 Divine Intervention album is discussed in this interview with Wright reflecting on Tom Araya's thought process in the lyrical composition as well as the painstaking process of mixing the album numerous times to make Slayer and American Records owner Rick Rubin happy.  One longstanding question among Metallica fans is in regards to the bass sound, or absence thereof, on the ...And Justice for All album in 1988. Rumors have abounded over the years that then-new bass player Jason Newsted was enduring a rough hazing by guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich as the reason for the burying of Newsted's bass tracks. Toby sets the record straight on this rumor and also looks back on the grueling hours spent as an engineer on this album perfecting Ulrich's drum parts; "We actually walked out of the studio with about 45 seconds worth of recorded music per day. 6 months to do drums, my friend." We finish things off with a heavy discussion of two KISS albums that Wright was involved in; the polarizing Crazy Nights (as an engineer) and Carnival of Sous (as producer).  Crazy Nights, released in 1987, seemed to be the apex of Paul Stanley and co. chasing trends. Featuring pop-friendly hooks and over-the-top guitar acrobatics from lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, Crazy Nights was a bold attempt to take KISS back to the forefront of the musical mainstream. With slick production, catchy songwriting, and top-notch production courtesy of Wright's engineering and Ron Nevison's production; the album had all of the ingredients needed to be a hit. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be as KISS had a hard time shaking their previous reputation as an old arena act and longtime fans of the band were turned off by the slick sound of the album. In this interview, Wright recalls his time working on the album, his history with Ron Nevison (over 25 albums together) and fondly remembers his brief time working with the late Eric Carr; "He was just an amazing dude. I remember laughing quite hard in the studio a few times." Finishing off the interview is an in-depth discussion of the 1997-released (but 1995-recorded) Carnival of Souls album. This album will always be somewhat of an anomaly in the KISS canon due to the circumstances in which it was made. Recorded as the follow-up to the critically successful Revenge album from 1992, Carnival of Souls featured KISS going a much darker route. In this conversation, Toby Wright shares his memories of making this album, its material, his take on the fans' opinions of it as well as Paul Stanley's not-so-kind words on it. Wright was also present in the studio the day that the final offer for KISS to reunite came through and shares his memory of Gene Simmons breaking the news to Bruce Kulick and drummer Eric Singer and their reactions.  Before we go, we get a quick take on Toby Wright's attitudes and opinions about the music industry today, what he thinks of the do-it-yourself state of recording, what he looks for in a band, and details about current and future projects. Keep up with Toby at www.tobywrightmusic.com There's so many more questions that we have for Toby Wright and hope to have in on for a second interview in the future as we really enjoying speaking with him.
