By Davy Crockett From 1875 to 1879, at least 130 six-day races were held, mostly in America and Great Britain. In 1879, the foot races became the #1 spectator sport in America. During that single year, at least 88 six-day races were held worldwide, with about 900 starters and witnessed by nearly one million spectators. Women played a significant role in these early six-day races, a century before they could take part in marathons. From 1875 to 1879, at least 30 six-day women's races were held, involving 150 women starters who ran as far as 393 miles in six days. These daring women athletes caused a significant rift across the Victorian-era society. An editorial in the New York Times stated, “Today it is the walking match, soon the women's vote will come.” It isn't surprising that once the women competed, that New York City considered passing an ordinance banning “all public exhibitions of female pedestrianism.” Many people thought these races, even limited to men, were a plague on society, especially because of all the wagering that took place and suspected corruption involved. In Louisiana, it was written, “Can't someone up there give these lunatics some kind of creditable employment in which they can exercise their pedal extremities to their hearts' content?” From London, England, “One of these days, when one of these poor fellows, dazzled with the distant prospect of gold, drops down dead on the track, science will be satisfied, sport appeased, and public indignation aroused. Pedestrians will go on doing the ‘best time on record' until they drop down dead.” Get my new book on Amazon After a huge race in New York City, The Third Asley Belt race, that affected attendance at churches that week, a minister wrote, “New York has been shamefully disgraced. This commercial emporium is in dishonor in the sight of God and in the eyes of the civilized world.” These early pedestrians at first had a goal to surpass 500 miles in six days. They then kept pushing the six-day world record further until George Littlewood reached 623 miles in 1888. That record stood for nearly a century and was considered a running record that would never be broken. But it eventually was broken by one man. Today, the six-day world record is held by Yiannis Kouros, of Greece, who covered an astonishing distance of 635 miles on a track in New York City in 1984. Later, in 2005, he covered 643. Running vs. Walking In 1878, the British established a six-day world championship series of races called “The Astley Belt.” After the 3rd Astley Belt Race in early 1879, won by Charles Rowell of Great Britain, Daniel O'Leary, the former six-day champion of the world, spent a lot of time pondering how the British seemed to being exceeding the Americans in the six-day sport. He became convinced that no strict walker could ever again win a highly competitive six-day race against runners. The best strict heel-toe walkers could exceed 500 miles, but not much further. He believed the runners being developed in Britain could go much further than 500 miles, and it was time for Americans to learn how to run more during these “go-as-you-please” six-day races. The six-day races held during April 1879 During April 1879, at least 13 six-day races were held, including five during the same week. Two significant races were held that month, the American Championship Belt at Gilmore's Garden, New York City, and the 2nd English Astley Belt held at the Agricultural Hall in London. Plans for the American Championship Belt The six-day American Championship Belt race was billed as a contest to produce the best man to be sponsored to compete in the 4th Astley Belt race to be scheduled in June 1879, in England. For this qualifying race, $1,000 and a championship belt would be awarded to the winner. The race was open only to residents of America and would be under the direction of the New York Athletic Club. Belts, not belt-buckles,

By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch Many women participated in six-day races during the 1800s. With the great publicity of the Astley Belt Six-Day races, and the popularity of the new go-as-you-please format inviting running, the six-day race exploded into a craze in America and Great Britain. Of the 850 total starters in 85 six-day races in 1879, more than 120 starters were women. The details of the 17 women's races held that year were fascinating, full of surprising drama, and needs to be remembered in this history, especially given the strong discriminating feelings toward women athletics in that era and for the century that followed. Visit https://www.patreon.com/ultrarunninghistory Women's International Six-Day Gilmore's Garden After the Third Astley Belt Race was concluded in New York City's Gilmore's Garden (Madison Square Garden) on March 15, 1879, (see episode 109), it was quickly announced that a “Grand Ladies' International Six-Day Race” would also be held at Gilmore's Garden in less than two weeks. It would be the first “go-as-you-please” (running-allowed) six-days race for women. Yes, women would start running to the shock of the Victorian Age public. Because of scheduling conflicts in the building, the race would need to span across a Sunday. At first, they were told they would be allowed to run on Sunday. However, the police chief later decided that they would have to take a 24-hour rest on Sunday during the race. For the first time, a women's ultrarunning race would include spectacular prizes for the winner. The first-place prize would be $1,000 ($28,750 value today) in cash along with a belt similar to the Astley belt, called the “Walton Belt” made by Tiffany valued at $250. The manager of the race was Francis Theodore “Plunger” Walton (1837-1911), a racehorse man and manager of the St. James Hotel in New York City.  A hefty entrant's fee of $200 was required to ensure that only the most serious women pedestrians would participate. All women who reached 325 miles, would get their fee back. Many women athletes expressed interest, including a number of amateur pedestrians trying to break into the sport. The same track for the Third Astley Belt race would be used. Army tents were provided for each competitor and three medical attendants would take care of them during the race. The Start On the evening of March 27, 1879, as a promenade concert was being held, many women accompanied by friends. carried bundles, bedding, trunks, and other possessions to the row of white tents in Gilmore's Garden. At 11 p.m., the eighteen women starters listened to race rules that included a new rule against dogging the runner's heels ahead, a rule that wouldn't be enforced very well. The ladies were arranged in four rows and started with the word “go,” accompanied by music from the band and the cheers of about 1,000 people. Exilda La Chapelle, of Canada, was the early favorite, but few bets were made. The news press was generally unfavorable about having women participating in such an event. They wrote, “The pitiful spectacle of 18 women starting on a six days' walk for money prizes was witnessed by about 1,000 spectators.” New York City's foremost pedestrian promoter, William B. Curtis, (1837-1900), founder of the New York Athletic Club, refused to have anything to do with the race other than collecting the money to guarantee the promised prize package of $1,750. It was reported, “As soon as the eighteen were well under way, the fun began. The crowd seemed to regard the affair much in the same farcical light as they would a burlesque entertainment at a theatre. They were a strange lot. Tall and short, heavy and slim, young and middle-aged,

Not to say that there weren't highlights in that time, namely breaking the US 100m National Freestyle record in 2019 and in 2021 breaking the 25-29 yrs FINA Masters WR in the 50m free.Ryan's stories around all these events are just pretty terrific.  I love the fact he is a huge fan of masters swimming and he sees himself doing more masters meets when he retires from professional swimming.  Not yet though! he has plenty more goals to reach leading into Paris 2024. Ryan is certainly a swimmer to watch and a joy to have on the podcast.  You will love this chat.Follow Ryan on Instagram:@heldiloxConnect with Torpedo Swimtalk:https://torpedoswimtalk.comLeave us a review.  We love to get your feedback!

Today's guest is multiple masters World Title Holder - the lovely Kristin Gary.We chatted about Kristin's journey to masters swimming, from keen junior to NCAA competitor for Duke University. Her hiatus after College away from the pool, only heightened her love of swimming when she found the masters swimming world. It is always interesting to hear different masters swimmers approaches to training and competing, and Kristin was no exception. We spoke about swimming for the New York Athletic Club (and previously the Red Tide Masters) and the work they do in supporting elite athletes towards their Olympic dreams and the training she does at the club.  We also chatted about Kristin's work in co-founding the not-for-profit Trident Swim Foundation, which supports school aged children with academic and swimming support on their road to College. As with many masters swimmers we speak with, it is evident that our love for swimming has flowed into other areas of our lives and this is definitely Kristin's journey. She got her start as a competitive figure skater in New Jersey and then went on to have a successful high school career in California before committing to Princeton. She ended up being a four-time Ivy League champion in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, an All-American and a member of a fifth-place finishing team at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. She accepted a job in New York City in graduation and never skipped a beat in her running. The transition to the roads was seamless until a nagging hamstring injury finally caught up to her and detached from her leg during a 50K world championship race. She shares the road to recovery that nearly led her to quit the sport and how she managed to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with a comeback at the 2018 California International Marathon. Never give up. Trust the process. ▶ Follow Sarah on Instagram: www.instagram.com/sarahccummings/ Support for this episode comes from FICS NYC (206 West 23rd Street, 3rd Floor) a fitness recovery and wellness studio. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow - somewhere else. You know what, I made my bed, so I’ll lie in it. I moved here. Like the point, counterpoint in the movie Airplane! said, they bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let’em crash. Well, let me shiver. This isn’t the weather report for New Brighton, Minnesota - but it’s close - welcome to Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the wrestling scores and more from around the world.  Minnesota Beer of the Night: In preparation for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, when I’m having a beer while putting this show together in the evening, I will enlighten you with that particular information. Tonight, it’s from probably my favorite or second-favorite Minnesota brewery, Fair State Brewing Cooperative. This one’s called Spirit Foul, a super rare collaboration with Modern Times Brewing out of San Diego, which is Spanish for a whale … you know. It’s a hazy IPA, which I’m starting to come around to. I’m not going to tell you about the flavor profile or something snooty like that. I like to try various beers, and I like to drink various beers. This is one I’ve gotten my hands on each of the last three years. It’s hard to find and sells out quickly. I will NOT be featuring Bud heavy, ever, on this show. Sorry Willie. Oh, if you’re on Untappd, find me there at jasonbryant12.  Dual Meets:  In the Chancellor’s Cup Dual, UW-Eau Claire won the first seven matches and cruised past UW-Oshkosh 25-9 in Eau Claire. The Blugolds were solid, picking up four major decisions en route to the win. We’re not sure where UW-Eau Claire’s Chancellor is going to put said cup, but my recommendation is to fill it up with Spotted Cow and drink from it as a chalice.  In the Keystone State, Division II Shippensburg topped Division III Elizabethtown 25-13 in E-Town on Wednesday. Wins by Austin Klucker and Dan Berberick at 197 and 285 enabled the Raiders to pull away for the win. Also in PA, Wilkes defeated Alvernia in that school’s first dual meet in school history 28-12.  In Ohio, Heidelberg - wait for it - defeated Wilmington 54-3. Still waiting. Yes, it’s my goal to teach everyone in this country the great wrestling mascots and nicknames we have. The Student Princes of Heidelberg. They used to be coached by current Army West Point assistant Ned Shuck.  Thomas More, which recently reclassified to the NAIA, defeated the second-year program at Ohio Wesleyan 27-19. Shay Horton, Avery Jones and Tyler Kassinger picked up falls for the Saints. No Elisabeth Shue references from The Saint today. Ok, just that one. Another NAIA over NCAA win came in Bristol, on the Tennessee side as Cumberland University beat King University 27-19. Cumberland fell behind 10-0 early before taking the lead for good after Dylan Quinn’s 17-10 win over Elijah Davis at 165. Heavyweight Patrick DePiazza sealed the win for the Phoenix. Yes, their named after a mythical firebird … or a city in Arizona.  Benedictine of Kansas beat Northwest Tech, also of Kansas 25-19 in a dual that won’t count for Benedictine. Why? NAIA rules stipulate that only competition against four-year varsity programs count for duals and individual records. Hey, I don’t make the rules. Oddly, if you’re an NCAA school, those matches do count. It counts for Northwest Tech, by the way. In a match that did count in the NAIA, Providence - the one in Montana - was impressive in winning all nine contested matches against Southern Oregon 35-6. In Arkansas, Division III University of the Ozarks beat Arkansas Baptist of the NJCAA 51-4. We close with the men’s and women’s doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point as the Pointers swept both matches over visiting Lakeland. UW-Stevens Point won the women’s dual 24-19, while the men’s dual wasn’t as close, with the Pointers sweeping all 10 matches over the Muskies in a 49-0 drubbing.  GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 63 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. Notables on the Docket for November 14: Illinois will head to St. Louis to take on No. 13 Missouri at Francis Howell High School. In Division II, CSU-Pueblo hosts what’s being dubbed a scrimmage against Otero Junior College, Colorado School of Mines will host Northeastern Junior College and Chadron State heads to the Western Slope to face Western Colorado, which you might remember as Western State.  In Division III, MacMurray hosts a quad, while Pitt-Bradford hosts Mercyhurst North East of the NJCAA. In a Chicagoland matchup, the Maroons of the University of Chicago travel to Elmhurst to face Steve Marianetti’s Bluejays. Chicago was actually a charter member of the Big Ten in 1896.  All Georgia matchup in the NAIA where Truett McConnell faces Brewton-Parker, Central Baptist is at Oklahoma Wesleyan, Providence heads to Eastern Oregon, while out in California, Fresno City faces Bakersfield and Skyline is at Modesto in the California Community Colleges.  FROM THE DWN: USA Wrestling and the United States Olympic and Paralymic Committee announced on Wednesday amendments to the 2020 Olympic Trials qualification process. The procedures initially made the highest American placewinner at the Dave Schultz Memorial a qualifier for the Trials. Well, due to scheduling issues, there is no Schultz this year, so the Last Chance Qualifier now has the top two wrestlers in each weight and style qualifying with a true second place match instituted, if needed.  TheMat.com also previews the Women’s World Cup, as Team USA features World Champions Adeline Gray, Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Jacarra Winchester.  United World Wrestling also provides an advance of the event, featuring World and Olympic champion Risako Kawai, written by an American journalist in Tokyo, Ken Marantz for UWW.  The saga of Anthony Echemendia, the Cuban-born Arizona high school star and his commitment has come to a close. Wrestling’s resident online antagonist Willie Saylor of MatScouts has a position on it via Rokfin, which this story is free. There you go Smalls. Oh, he’s going to be a Buckeye.  Sam Herring, the 13-year-old who’s one half of the Home Mat Advantage Podcast, previews the Bill Farrell at 57kg. Yes, I’m including content from a 13-year-old, because he deserves it.  The kid’s taking Latin. It might be a dead language, but how many of us actually know any more than a few words of Spanish? Come on. And yelling “rouge passive” doesn’t count, Rob Prebish. CoSIDA Recognition Week was November 6-12. CoSIDA is the membership organization for media relations professionals in college sports, and as the acronym says, the College Sports Information Directors of America. One of those awesome SIDs who makes our jobs easier is Michigan’s Leah Howard. She pens a piece on Michigan Hall of Famer John Fisher, which you can read at MGoBlue.com. Delaware Valley University announced world bronze medalist Leigh Jaynes as the program’s new full-time women’s wrestling coach. The school was set to launch a program this season, but a number of hurdles prevented that from happening - none of which seem to be public knowledge. Previous coach Caitlyn Baker left her position before the program got rolling.  The Pennsylvania RTC previews its athletes who are set to compete at the Bill Farrell International this weekend at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. Flowrestling’s David Bray gets in on the Farrell chatter, previewing the six women’s weights.  It’s National Signing Day across the country. Flowrestling has a Division I signing day to follow all week as the early signing period has commenced.  InterMat features Beat the Streets Chicago wrestler Kaila Del Toro, the first All-American from BTS Chicago.  Bo Nickal’s plans after 2020 are clear - he’s going the MMA route. Bo went on the Luke Thomas Show he plans on bringing an American Top Team gym to State College and train out of there instead of relocating.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette highlights the powerhouse program at Pitt-Johnstown and head coach Pat Pecora. The Mountain Cats are loaded with talent from Western Pennsylvania and coach Pecora is 15 victories shy of tying the all-time coaching dual meet record, set by the late Dale Thomas.  More stuff from The Daily Pennsylvanian! This time a feature on Penn head coach Roger Reina. Good stuff from Philly this week.  On The Network Virginia Tech head coach Tony Robie talks about the big signees that came the Hokies way on the Episode 90 of Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling. Robie will also recap the Mat on the Mound dual against Northwestern and look forward to this Sunday’s tilt against Ohio State. I would have posted the #PackM

Leland Carson is a 77-year-old retired tax attorney who founded the club for men who like ordinary things. The idea came to him in a New York Athletic Club bar. He and a group of men were looking at the club’s monthly magazine. The pages were filled with boxing, judo, skiing, sailing, and other exciting adventures. Carson and his friends didn’t do any of those things. They confessed to being rather dull. So, they decided to start a club-within-a-club, and a new movement was born. The Dull Men’s Club now has hundreds of members worldwide. Some collect airsickness bags. Others collect bricks. Some spend their days photographing mailboxes. And others just roam around sitting on benches. Leland splits his time between his home in Nebraska, England, and Washington, DC. "You have this insane community in New York where if I wake up on a Saturday morning, there are a number of people I can text and be like, 'Hey, do you want to meet for 6, 10 or 15 miles real quick?' New York is condensed in a way where you know people are going to Central Park, Prospect Park, the West Side High Way or doing some sort of bridge run situation. I think that aspect of it has been very crucial to me. I sincerely don't know if I would still be as invested in running and racing if I didn't have that accessibility to training partners." Caitlin Phillips is a two-time U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier and has run 2:37.48. She lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan as an art producer executive director and has been running in the city since 2007. In this episode, we delve into her diverse insight into the New York City from her time competing for the New York Athletic Club and Black Roses NYC. This episode was especially fun to record because despite her success on the roads, there is not much information on the web when you ask yourself, 'Who is Caitlin Phillips?' Her first marathon was a DNF so what brought her back to the distance and how has she "unlocked" it to the point where she now dreams of running the A-standard for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials? Caitlin shares her background from running high school cross country in Ohio, competing for Kentucky and winning an SEC championship and ultimately then landing in New York. You'll also learn about her races at the grueling 2018 Boston Marathon, a fast Berlin Marathon, what goes into a 100-mile week in New York, how and why she became a runner, and what keeps her running. It’s truly a sight to behold, that’s right, it’s time to ski the K12, dude with Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s college scores and more with me, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. No, I didn’t learn English by watching the Wide World of Sports. At the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Delaware, second-ranked Ohio State trounced Princeton 39-0 on the eve of the Beast of the East. Key match there was at 149 pounds where Ke-Shawn Hayes knocked off All-American Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton 2-0 at 149 on the strength of an escape and riding time. The Buckeyes had six bonus point victories. Prior to the bout, we had a women’s freestyle dual where Campbellsville topped the University of the Cumberlands 35-11. Why? Well, following Presbyterian’s lead, the folks in Delaware are showing their local administrators men’s and women’s wrestling. Could we see the Fightin’ Blue Hens with wrestling once again? Whatever it is, they have no idea what the street value of this mountain is. Out in Lincoln, sixth-ranked NC State won basically every toss up and came into the Devanney Center and spanked No. 12 Nebraska 29-3. It started with Hayden Hidlay’s 6-3 win over Tyler Berger at 157 pounds and continued on with close but solid wins from Daniel Bullard at 174, Pete Renda at 184, Tommy Cox at 125 and Beau Donahue ripping victory away from Collin Purinton 11-10 at 149. Donahue trailed 7-1 at one point. He scored three third-period takedowns to basically sum up how the day went for both teams. Donahue also said he didn’t like all the extra fat from fried bacon, so he boiled it. Out west, Northwestern has quietly improved to 6-0 after wins against Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield. Against the Runners, the Wildcats won seven out of 10 bouts including bonus victories from Sebastian Rivera, Ryan Deakin, Johnny Sebastian, Mitch Sliga and Conan Jennings. By the way, I know two Conan’s who wrestled -- they were both heavyweights. I guess their parents knew something waaaay ahead of time. It’s got raisins in it, you like raisins. The Wildcats beat Cal Poly 30-8 in the nightcap. Would you mind if I asked out Beth? Utah Valley picked up a Big 12 win over North Dakota State, stopping the Bison 26-13 in Orem. Notable wins registered from the Wolverines Demetrius Romero at 165, Dustin Dennison and heavyweight and Taylor Lamont at 125 pounds. Romero, a transfer from Boise State after that school ducked and covered after dropping wrestling last season, topped nationally ranked Andrew Fogarty 5-3 in sudden victory. Both teams were receiving votes in this past week’s NWCA Division I Coaches Poll and both teams WANT THEIR TWO DOLLARS! Chris Lyons and Tyler Ortmann’s victories at 197 and 285 gave Cornell College a 23-15 come-from-behind win over Augustana -- the one in Illinois -- on Friday. The win is the Rams’ first since head coach Mike Duroe was revealed to be fighting brain cancer. Check out his gofundme page. We’re with you coach Duroe. Nationally ranked Matt Noble, Raymond Jazikoff and Blaise Benderoth picked up bonus victories in the final “home” dual of the season for NYU as the Bobcats topped the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 32-16. We say home because the match was held at the New York Athletic Club, which is just three miles from NYU’s Manhattan campus. MSOE, that’s the Milwaukee School of Engineering won its first dual of the year, winning six bouts in the middle to top Concordia -- the one in Wisconsin -- 27-23. Coach Matt Zwaschka’s Raiders were also added by two forfeits. Missouri Valley 3-0 including 27-15 win over Williams Baptist at the WBC Eagle Duals hosted by Williams Baptist. The Vikings topped Brewton-Parker 41-3 and Bacone 51-3. WBC’s Demetrius Thomas and Jaitlan Pitts each went 3-0 with 3 falls for Williams Baptist. Also in the NAIA, Life beat Reinhardt 29-16 and Menlo beat Embry-Riddle 23-20. Out in Rocklin, California, Emmanuel College went 3-0 at the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions, beating Grays Harbor 40-5, Southern Oregon 40-7 and Eastern Oregon 45-4. Individual tournament comes on Saturday. That’s all from the base of Mount Brodie where the once proud champion, Lane Meyer, is now a study in mopishness.   JOIN THE TEAM And if you're a fan of the extensive and broad-based reach of the shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, become a TEAM MEMBER today. About our Guest… Michael Badalucco, a Brooklyn native, got his start in the entertainment industry at a very young age, going to work with his father Giuseppe, a Sicilian-born immigrant, who worked as a carpenter on movie sets. His first speaking role was in the feature film Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese, which led to additional roles in movies such as Broadway Danny Rose, directed by Woody Allen. Throughout the 1990's, Badalucco appeared in a series of memorable supporting roles in such acclaimed films as Miller's Crossing, Sleepless in Seattle, Jungle Fever, The Professional, and Mac. His performance in the romantic comedy One Fine Day, prompted star Michelle Pfeiffer to recommend Badalucco to her husband, David E. Kelley, for a role in his ABC television series The Practice. Not only did Badalucco get the part, but his performance as Jimmy Berluti would ultimately serve as his breakout role. In 1999 he received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Next, on the big screen, he portrayed serial killer David Berkowitz in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam. He then stepped into the shoes of notorious gangster George "Baby Face" Nelson for the throwback Coen Brothers comedy, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and appeared in their subsequent film, The Man Who Wasn't There. Michael is privileged to support Italian-American causes through his work with the National Italian American Foundation and Arba Sicula, an organization which preserves, studies, and promotes the language and culture of Sicily. He is also a proud member of the New York Athletic Club, Tiro A Segno of New York, and The Italian American Marching Club of New Orleans, where he has served as Grand Marshal of its annual parade in honor of St. Joseph.
