In this episode of The Invisible Gift, Andrew talks with the multi-award winning inventor, and artist, Jim Rokos. Andrew and Jim have a fascinating conversation. Jim talks about his experiences in school, his first invention, how dyslexia has informed and defined his work, and they speak on the merits and strengths of neurodiversities in society at large. The boys also enjoy a ‘dyslexic' bottle of wine.  Special thanks to Ruth Ward for permitting use of her photography.    Top Quotes “It's a dyslexic thing to think around problems and find solutions.” - Jim Rokos “Having failed so much through school, there's a willingness to fail and take risks." - Jim Rokos “I think all neuro- diversities are advantageous. Within a community, it's useful to have people who think in different ways.” - Jim Rokos “The brain architecture of a dyslexic is more tangled. Which is how they can come up with more unusual ideas.” - Jim Rokos About The Guest Jim Rokos is a multi-award winning artist and inventor based in London. Jim learned he had dyslexia at age 9, and has since spread the message of neurodiverse positivity through his art. Originally training as a model maker, Jim worked on a number of major television and film projects such as The Muppets Treasure Island, Tomb Raider, Band of Brothers and others. His patented cat-food bowl won BBC's Tomorrow's World's Best Inventions pilot in 2001. Rokos won the prestigious 2012 Reddot Design award for the 13° 60° 104° Wine Decanter and the Enterprise Europe Network Award 2014 for the Gauge vase. In 2016, Jim curated the first ever Dyslexic Design exhibition in London. The show challenged perceptions of dyslexia by accentuating the positive effects of unique perspectives in art and design. The show was a silver winner in London's design awards. “There’s times before my mom and I are about to go onstage to play together, and maybe we just argued right before going on. But there’s something about that moment... where I give her a kiss on the cheek and say, ‘Hey, this started with you and me. Let’s go out there and do this.’” -Madisen Ward My guests this week are Madisen and Ruth Ward, who together are known as the mother-and-son folk band Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. They’ve appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, NPR’s Tiny Desk Series, and recently released a brand new album called Started With A Family (if you haven’t heard their music yet, I highly suggest you take a listen).  For this episode, Madisen, Ruth and I tackled a question from Paige Elson from Stockton, California. Paige asked, “What are the benefits and setbacks of working creatively with family?” I’ve always been curious to know how family fits into creativity. Where does creativity come from? Do you get it from your parent’s genes or from the upbringing they provided? Madisen and Ruth brought such an interesting perspective to this question. We talked about how Ruth’s career transformed after she became a mom, how writing and performing music is different when collaborating with family members, what role music played in the Ward household, and we topped it all off with a question about a crab’s perspective. If you have a question about the creative process, that you think would spawn a good conversation on this show, ask me on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter tagged #creativeprocessing, or by emailing creativeprocessing@hitrecord.org. New episodes are coming out every Tuesday through October 22, 2019. ------ ABOUT THE GUESTS: Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear consists of Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward. They are a modern soulful/folk music duo from Independence, Mo. The band's debut album Skeleton Crew, produced by Jim Abbiss, known for his award-winning work with Arctic Monkeys and Adele, captures Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear in their most natural setting. The two tracked most of the tracks live, sitting across from one another in the recording studio. They didn't use a click track. With help from a handful of session musicians, the two Wards captured the sound they'd been making since those coffeeshop days.  ------  SELECTED LINKS FOR EPISODE: Connect with Madisen and Ruth: -Twitter: @MadisenWardMB -Instagram: @MadisenWardMB -Facebook: Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear -YouTube Channel (One For the Record Series) -MadisenWardandtheMamaBear.com Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear Music Mentioned: -Started With A Family (2019) -Skeleton Crew (2015) -"Dead Daffodils" -"Undertaker and Juniper" MadisenMusic Music Mentioned: -“Skip and the Turtle” -“Weep for the King” -“Big Bad Wolfblood” Other Music Mentioned: -Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards by Tom Waits -“Old Man” by Neil Young -“Clown’s Lament”by @Metaphorest on HITRECORD -Pink Moon by Nick Drake People Mentioned: -Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Actor and Ruth’s Brother) -Tom Waits (Singer-Songwriter) -Tracy Chapman (Singer-Songwriter) -Mark Knopfler (Singer-Songwriter) -Bob Dylan (Singer-Songwriter) -The Osmonds (Family Music Group) -Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Composer) -The White Stripes (Musical Group) -Wu-Tang Clan (Hip Hop Group) TV Shows Mentioned: -The Wire (2002-2008) -MacGyver (1985-1992)

Madisen and Ruth Ward of “Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear” started long before the child of the mother-son duo was born. During her career as a solo artist, Ruth Ward began inviting her son Madisen on stage to join her live performances in coffee shops in the Kansas City Metro. The band has gone on to play with greats like B.B. King and Old Crow Medicine Show and gained national attention for their hits like “Silent Movies” and “Yellow Taxi.” Their second album, “The Radio Winners,” shows the depth and talent of the band and their unique take on folk music.

Leonard Nimoy's Influence on DS9. The passing of Leonard Nimoy marks a shift in Star Trek universe. Perhaps no character from the franchise is better known that Spock. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing take a moment to remember Nimoy, how his interpretation of Spock informed the writing and performances of characters in orbit of Bajor all those years later, and even imagine some scenarios in which Leonard could have made a cameo on Deep Space Nine in a way that would have felt completely natural.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. The Dominion Invasion, Part 2 of 7: A Time to Stand. Deep Space Nine is often seen as that series about the war. But, in fact, the Dominion War didn't really begin until the end of the fifth season. Squadrons of insect-like Dominion ships pouring out of the wormhole was the harbinger of the greatness and danger to come, and to a unique approach to Star Trek storytelling. The sixth season of DS9 was to begin not only with an unprecedented six-episode arc, but also with the scattering of our heroes and the loss of the space station whose very name is in the title of the show. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing continue their series that takes you through the Season Six opener. This time around we tackle the actual season premier, “A Time to Stand,” the uneasy alliance aboard the station, Sisko's unexpected career turn as a master strategist, the ever-adaptable nature of Odo, the new path for a grown-up Jake, and the incredible display of arrogance delivered by one Skrain Dukat, Esq.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. The Final Chapter, Part 9 of 9: What You Leave Behind. Wrapping up a series as complex as Deep Space Nine cannot be done with a traditional finale. To tackle a task so large, the writers needed a grand canvas upon which to paint the final strokes; but even eight episodes left so much still undone. The ninth and final installment—a double-thick bookend to the series opener "Emissary"—had a lot to live up to. Not only were there countless character threads and story arcs to conclude, but, when it came to final episodes, DS9 was still living in the shadow of "All Good Things…" Could the incredible writing team behind DS9 really pull it off? In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing conclude our series of shows that take you through the entire nine-part, ten-hour Deep Space Nine finale with the very last piece of the story, "What You Leave Behind." Odo on Terok Nor. Long before he was chief of security for Captain Sisko, Odo served in the same position under Gul Dukat during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. It was a time when Odo was just beginning his life amongst solids, and as a result his sense of right and wrong were not well developed. He changed a lot in the years that followed, and that change was shared and contrasted with the audience thanks to unusual circumstances that led to Odo reliving key events from seven years prior in “Things Past.” In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss the Odo-specific elements of this story as they delve into Odo's Cardassian background, the line between order and justice, his role in the executions of the Bajorans Ishan, Jillur, and Timor, and how his take on those events changed over time.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. The Other O'Briens: Miles and Kira. When an actress becomes pregnant during the run of a television show, the writers often have trouble figuring out how to deal with it. You can try to hide it with camera work and props, as they did with Roxann Dawson, or you can send the character on a trip somewhere. There are many options, but finding one that truly fits with the show can be difficult. Luckily, science fiction opens up some unique doors, so when Nana Visitor became pregnant during DS9 the writers found away to write the pregnancy into the series by tying it to an existing storyline involving the O'Briens. In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing take a look at the effect this unique storyline has on the three characters involved—Kira, Miles, and Keiko, the flirtation often cited by fans, the difficult situation Kira and Miles find themselves in, and why Keiko seems determined to be an unwitting matchmaker.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. Worf with Earl Grey. Over the course of seven seasons, Worf became a fan favorite on The Next Generation. With Michael Dorn now free from the week-to-week requirements of life aboard the Enterprise-D, he was available to lend a hand on that old Cardassian space station—which those in power felt was just want the young spinoff needed. The idea was praised by some, rejected by many. While it may have initially been viewed as a gimmick, hindsight shows us that not only was the decision to bring Worf to DS9 a good one, the station turned out to be just the environment the character needed to thrive. In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing are joined by the crew from our TNG show Earl Grey—Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx—for the second half of our two-part crossover look at Worf. The TNG gang give us their perspective on seeing one of their own make DS9 home, how Worf meshed with the station's crew, his relationship with Jadzia and Ezri, where he ended up at the end of his two-series arc, and more.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Guests Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. The Orb: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast

The Final Chapter, Part 8 of 9: The Dogs of War. Through the first seven parts of DS9's final arc, the writers set up an unwieldy number of threads. Some were concluded along the way, but many remained. As a result, a bridge was needed between the bulk of the story and the events of the finale. That bridge came in the form of "The Dogs of War," an episode that spread out the pieces of the puzzle, locked some of them in place, and clarified where the remaining ones would go. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our series of shows that will take you through the entire nine-part, ten-hour Deep Space Nine finale with the penultimate episode "The Dogs of War." We discuss the replacement of the Defiant, Odo's reaction to learning of his betrayal by the Federation, the endgame of the Bashir-Ezri dance, why Grand Nagus Rom makes a lot more sense than most people think, and why Bonnie Tyler is ultimately responsible for the defeat of the Dominion.   Hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Christopher Jones   Associate Producers Norman C. In the Cards Commentary. Just before it all hit the fan, station Deep Space 9 played host to an auction that gave birth to a wild chase for a rare baseball card. It's a unique story within Star Trek that flips the usual format on its head by relegating the serious elements to the B-story whilst focusing primarily on what many might consider the frivilous—a vintage mint-condition 1951 Willie Mays rookie baseball card. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing bring you a commentary for "In the Cards" as they explore the dynamic between Jake and Nog, the rare glimpse of respect for Sisko shown by Kai Winn, the critical sixth-season story elements that are being set up in the background, and speculate on just what happens when you climb inside Dr. Elias Giger's cellular regeneration and entertainment chamber.   Send us your feedback!
